Pit Stories: The Weirdness Of Guernsey
It's time for another Pit Story! This week we checked in with U.K. sludgy doom outfit Pensevor to hear about an interesting experience at a live show. Guitarist Pat Hopkins had this to say:
Way back in the early 00’s my old band was doing a very brief Channel Island tour, Jersey on the Friday night, prop plane over to Guernsey for the Saturday and back to Jersey for the Sunday night. I was playing in a dream pop band at the time (hey don't judge me) and we were supporting a couple of post hardcore bands from the UK mainland.
Having never been there before, I found Jersey a bit weird, but the Friday night show was fun. We got the early flight over to Guernsey on the Saturdaymorning and got to a pub near the venue before lunchtime and started playing pool and drinking. Mark (Pensevor vocals) had come over as an unofficial roadie, and to help us party hard.
The gig was in the function room at Guernsey hockey club, we went on first and it went OK. A band from Guernsey played, I think they were called Mechanical Lobster. By now I'd started to realize that Guernsey was like Jersey, only even more weird – a bit difficult to put into words, maybe a bit like Royston Vasey... Even friends who had lived in Jersey for a long time reckoned Guernsey was weird.
Anyway, the headline band went on and rocked out but the kids all suddenly went totally apeshit – it was like they'd all been electrocuted at the same time – I was a bit unprepared for the way they'd so enthusiastically reacted to the guys from the UK, stage diving, full on body slamming and so on.
After the gig, Mark snuck off for a cheeky smoke with the locals and we didn't see him again until the Sunday lunchtime back in Jersey. He had managed to get back to the hotel, fall asleep in a random room and missed the flight we all took back to Jersey. Fortunately the airport staff were cool and let him take a later flight. Lots of other shenanigans that weekend; bed wetting, snare drums on luggage carousels, conversations about smegma, and debates on optimum bath temperature for improved fertility. Ahh, Guernsey!

Pensevor will release new album "Klothod" through Hibernacula Records on May 6th, with pre-orders up at this location. More...

Power Quest Re-Groups With New Lineup
Keyboardist/composer Steve Williams of the U.K. power metal act Power Quest announced that he will resurrect the band after a three year absence with a new lineup. The band is currently working on the sixth album and follow up to the 2011's "Blood Alliance."

Williams had this to say: "I'm genuinely thrilled to be bringing PQ back from the shadows. I've had a lot of ups and downs over the past few years but I cannot wait to unleash the new line up. The atmosphere in the rehearsal room over the past couple of months has been electric and it feels great to be back doing what I love most.”

Gorguts Streams Movement From "Pleiades' Dust"
The critically-acclaimed death metal pioneers from Gorguts are streaming another new segment from their forthcoming EP, "Pleiades' Dust." The movement, titled "Besieged," is streaming below. Regarding the excerpt, Gorguts mastermind Luc Lemay comments:
"With 'Besieged,' the composition that is 'Pleiades' Dust' reaches its last segment. I wanted to have a 'Funeral March' feel to it, since it is a dramatic point in the story, when the Mongol invaders destroy the library and most of the books are thrown in the Tigris river.
"Musically, I wanted to pay tribute to 3 things with the opening doom riff. First, in the progression of the doom riff, throughout the four repeats, I wanted to expose the theme in unison and in counterpoint, among the string instruments, that gets more complex each time. This constitutes an ode to Penderecki's second violin concerto, which introduces a funeral march feel right after the cadenza.
"Second, is the guitar tone represents a big nod to the sound of Sunlight studio / HM2. I am absolutely crazy about this guitar tone, which we find on the first Entombed album and also the Bloodbath records. Those had a massive influence on me, when I was writing 'Considered Dead.'
"Third, is the 'doom riff" guitar work that I originally discovered on the first Paradise Lost album. I was so intrigued by this dark feel in their writing style and that was also a huge influence for the distinct dual guitar riffs on 'Considered Dead.' Therefore this is a tribute to Greg Mackintosh." More...

We kept the concept simple and didn’t really want to overthink it too much. Just the band and our friends having a good time.”
New album "Transmissions" is the follow-up to "What Doesn't Kill Us." Ryan comments: "We wanted to return when we had that fire going again. We demoed over 25 songs for this record in four months. Karma To Burn Announces U.S. Tour
Karma To Burn will hit the road this spring with The Obsessed and The Atomic Bitchwax. The tour starts May 13th in Washington, DC and runs through June 11th in Atlanta, GA, with a complete list of dates available below. Karma To Burn commented on the upcoming tour:
"What better way to follow a full European tour than following The Obsessed and Atomic Bitchwax around America? How about a month off in Sardinia, followed by a year living in the Netherlands. As much as we would like that, we should do the tour, it's only our second full U.S. tour in 5 years, so we're a bit overdue in our own country.
"The stacked lineup and extensive schedule should make up for our absence. The Obsessed... Wino... the demi-god of DOOM... we couldn't pick a better U.S. band to support. But honestly we're most excited about the burritos and burgers. See you on the road." More...

Death Lullaby Posts "Renegade" Video
Set to unleash debut album "Wormz" via Famined Records on April 15th, Montreal, QC's Death Lullaby today releases a video for "Renegade," which is one of eleven bone-crushing tracks from the release.
"Wormz" features guest appearances from Fred Beaulieu (Beheading Of A King), Dan Mongrain (Voivod, Martyr) and Chris Donaldson (Cryptopsy) and the album was produced, mixed and mastered at The Grid.
Drummer Kevin Alexander comments: "'Renegade' represents Death Lullaby's sound entirely, very aggressive, raw and punchy rhythms fused with melody and in some ways, technically challenging. A short and sweet track, but jam-packed with riffs that'll make you count, and think to yourself: what the hell was that? A hint of sing-along chorus on this track, which if you are a fan of....is done more constructively throughout the full album with tracks like 'They Dig/They Devour,' 'Conquer All' & 'Rainmaker.' For definite fans of Veil Of Maya, Born Of Osiris, All Shall Perish, Chimaira and Lamb Of God." More...

"The idea behind despot is that basically your own flesh is a tyrant over your mind. Even though our awareness lies within our minds, it is still governed by the husk of meat that we wear. Every decision we make is made in consideration to the laws of our own flesh, as if it has a despotic rule over our sentience." More...
Aggression Announces Tour Dates / New Bassist
Canadian 80's thrashers Aggression have announced they will be hitting the road this summer for the USA "Demons of West Coast Tour" in support of latest album "Fractured Psyche Demons." The album was released during August 2015 via Galy Records.
Founding member Denis Sasquath Barthe comments: "As the Aggression accelerated journey to hell continues, I couldn't be more excited about our upcoming promotional tour of the USA West Coast hitting cities that have been filled with Aggression fans since day 1. Back in the 80's, we sold most of our demos in the L.A./San Fran market and it will be great to see some of these metal fans out there. Let's thrash the West Coast - old school style!"
In additional news, Aggression is proud to announce a new band member - bassist Martin Meyer (ex-Disciples of Power, Life Against Death) steps in to replace original bass player Yves "Dug" Duguay.
Barthe comments: "The band lives in Vancouver on the West coast. Dug lives in Montreal on the East coast so that was working against us to begin with. We did a tour through Ontario and Quebec with him last spring and I think it was just too much for him. He's been dealing with some health issues for a few years now. We all wish him the best." Allfather Streaming "Mouth Of The Beast"
Allfather is streaming new track "Mouth of the Beast" online (check it out below) courtesy of Echoes & Dust. The track is a five-minute blast of hardcore infused sludge for fans of Corrosion of Conformity, Down and High on Fire.
"Mouth Of The Beast" is taken from the band's new album "Bless the Earth With Fire," which will release via Static Tension Recordings on April 29th, 2016. Pre-orders are up at this location and bassist Andrew Day commented about the new track:
"The song was written as a response to fascism literally landing on our doorstep. Extreme right-wing UK political party UKIP got an MP elected in Rochester off the back of anti-immigrant rhetoric and were quickly followed by far-right thugs from pound-shop Nazis Britain First ‘protesting’ on the high street. Band members were involved in the counter-demonstration against Britain First and the song lyrics came out of frustration at having to confront open racism and racist violence in the town we live in. Musically Mouth of the Beast started as punk/sludge and the doom parts came out of jamming through the song’s end a few times, then just seeing how crazily slow and heavy we could get without it falling apart. It’s what we’d like to think Woodie Guthrie would have done if he’d been into Buzz*oven rather than Jimmy Rodgers." More...
