Interview

Ken Susi of Unearth talks about the Fury Tour

Matt: I'm here with Ken of Unearth. I like a lot of the black metal elements on “Watchers of Rule.” I also noticed the alternative rock elements on “Darkness In the Light,” Swedish death metal stuff on “Oncoming Storm,” jazz on “The March” and a lot of grunge on “Stings of Conscience.” It's been two years since “Watchers of Rule” and you're probably gearing up to record soon so I've just got to ask, what have you been listening to?

Ken: We always try to keep our records different. Our first album had a lot of hardcore mixed with Iron Maiden. “Storm” was kind of a derivative of that and more heavy metal and “Eyes of Fire” was more thrash. So on and so forth. We always try to mix it up. They try to pigeonhole us as metalcore but I think that all of all the bands out of our era or generation we've been the ones that have taken the most chances. We don't put out the same record every time. Right now Buz and I are putting out another record and it's super cool.

Khanus Releasing "Rites Of Fire"

Khanus is gearing up to release "Rites Of Fire" through I, Voidhanger Records this coming May 6th. The label also comments:

"Hailing from Oulu, Finland, Khanus perform shamanic metal of death by exploring the boundaries of matter, spirit, consciousness and the universe. The hypnotic, tribal quality of their riffs, the mystic melodies and the circular structure of the songs cut through the walls of perception like a dagger of enlightenment that tears the grey veil of reality, while chanting-like choirs and soprano vocals – combined with intense growls – accentuate the ritualistic feel and the spiritual vertigo the music provokes.

"Apparently simple and primitive, Khanus' style is totally unique, dense and richly textured, constantly oscillating between the sheer brutality and furiousness of black-tinged death metal and a meditative state of trance that borders on psychedelia.

"Mixed and mastered by Cam Sinclair (Bölzer, Diocletian, Witchrist) and graced by a fascinating cover art drawn by Romanian artist Luciana Nedelea, the 'Rites Of Fire' EP is an act of creative magick, the first statement of a band boldly leaning towards the infinite. It comes as a CD in a gloss laminated 4-panel digipak with 6-page booklet, strictly limited to 300 copies and never to be reprinted in this format."

Regarding the concept behind the video, Zev comments: "Sisyphus, the two-faced king with the blood of war and betrayal on his hands, was sentenced to Tartarus, the prison below hell, for deceiving Zeus.

"In my version of the story, he is trapped in a Panopticon, ruled by Panoptes, the giant with one hundred eyes. His struggle reflects that of modern man, forever pushing the same stone up a hill each day, under the omnipresent eye of the ruling class. This project was not possible without a brilliant cast and the talents of Rebeccah Lak, who built the maze from scratch." More...

Kvelertak Posts "1985" Music Video

Roadrunner Records group Kvelertak has debuted an official music video for “1985,” the first track to be released off new LP "Nattesferd." Directed, written, and edited by longtime collaborator Fredrik S. Hana, the video for “1985” follows the track's narrative of a cold dystopian future.

Hana commented on the video: “In my third collaboration with Kvelertak, I wanted to make a music video where the story and characters took the center stage. The video revolves around a micro-community, a four man cult, where a deep and twisted friendship lies beneath it all. They don’t see themselves as a part of the normal society and decide to honor their differences in a unique fellowship.

"We follow the character’s growing addiction to push limits, and in the end, their incompetence to see any real consequences with their actions. I wanted to get across the fantastic feeling of being a part of something, but also the dangers of not daring to take a stand, to just swim along with the current.” More...

Old Corpse Road Signs Record Deal

Old Corpse Road is now a member of the Cacophonous label family, and the new album "Of Campfires and Evening Mists" is due to hit stores on May 27th. The band had this to say about the signing:

"Old Corpse Road are proud to announce our induction into the resurrected Cacophonous coven. The dedication and support from a legendary label who brought the world bands such as Bal-Sagoth, Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir is incredible.

"For Cacophonous to have faith in our vision and music is a humbling experience. It is a great honour for the Old Corpse Road moniker to sit alongside many of the bands that inspired our journey. We can't think of a better home for our opus 'Of Campfires and Evening Mists' and we hope our partnership with Cacophonous proves to only strengthen the burgeoning UK black metal scene.

"'Of Campfires and Evening Mists' has been a long time project, and is a work of blood, sweat and determination. The band has worked tirelessly to make sure that every aspect of the album, from the artwork to the music, represents our darkened take on British folklore in its purest form. The music flows from fierce black metal through to powerful melodic passages and onto serene yet haunting moments. We have taken time to fully explore the moods and themes of each story, leading to long but enthralling songs. More...

Hatebreed Posts "A.D." Lyric Clip

On Hatebreed's upcoming release "The Concrete Confessional" (due out May 13th through Nuclear Blast), a number of tracks provide a pragmatic look at issues that have become front-and-center in today's New Normal, and the track "A.D." is a case in point.

Reflecting what is today a challenging time, it's a song that fuses together frustration with torrential thrashed-out guitars, double bass drums, and Jamey Jasta's immortal growl.

"'A.D.' was a way that I could voice my frustration about the loss of opportunities available to the average guy," said lyricist/vocalist Jasta. "With the government and big business drowning in corruption and greed, the average person is being squeezed, so achieving the American Dream is becoming less and less real."

Check out the "A.D." lyric video below. "We all need to pay closer attention to what our elected leaders are doing," Jasta added. "Start locally, in your own community, make your representatives accountable." More...
