In Twilight's Embrace Covers Armia

Polish death metal band In Twilight’s Embrace has paid homage to the visionary punk band Armia, releasing a video for a cover of the track “Opowiesc Zimowa” (“Winter’s Tale”). This interpretation of the song will also be included on upcoming EP "Trembling."

Cyprian Lakomy (vocals) comments: “'Legenda', the second album of Armia is in my opinion not only the most unique landmark of Polish music, but also one of those records which stick to you for a lifetime. Right from the moment I heard it as a teenager, I was totally blown away by the utter darkness these songs channeled and the unconquered spirit they possessed.

"The whole opus has this grim, dark and cold feeling which perfectly corresponds with the Polish reality of the early 90s with its fear and trembling. At the same time, there is a deep yearning for the worlds far beyond this place. In this respect, I find the band's founders Tomasz Budzynski and Robert Brylewski a perfect songwriting duo with the gift of creating new realms through sound.

"'Opowiesc Zimowa' is perhaps one of their strongest songs – full of horror and weird kind of beauty at the same time. Covering it has been on my mind for years and I couldn't be happier that we have finally done this. This is our homage not only to Armia, but to Polish music in general and the otherworldly power it was able to conjure back in the day.” More...

OpEd

Metal Must Evolve

My biggest issue with metal in the 2010s is that in contrast to the past three decades, there's just a lack of creativity. Newer metalcore is being increasingly influenced by nu-metal and post-hardcore as the new musicians who are in their 20s and 30s are now playing music that's entirely an amalgam of what they grew up with as teens rather than creating anything new.

Blackgaze was novel for the first few years but now feels like the light beer version of black metal at this point that doesn't have the same edge that metal is supposed to have. I'm not sure if I want black metal to have a kinder, gentler, dare I say, “cuddlier” face when compared to the antisocial behavior that defined the second wave. When I hear a band like Alcest or Deafheaven, I don't feel like these are maniacs with serious mental issues precisely because it sounds way too calculated and professional for my aging ears.

Djent is nice but often feels too monotonous to really do justice to how technical it is. For, “progressive metal” the songwriting lacks the same level of unexpected changes in direction that make progressive rock acts like Rush and Yes so appealing. Yeah, Djent is heavy but it's also often predicable when unconventional songwriting is half of what separates metal and makes it so special and unique. Blackened sludge on the othe rhand is only going to appeal to people who want extremely raw production... who will never be great enough in number to establish a trend rather than a fad. More...

Bibeau Releases New Video

Texas-based group Bibeau recently shot a clip for new single "Mark This," which is due to drop May 3rd. Today the music video comes online and can be seen below.

The single was produced by Luke Garrigus at Blackroom Studios outside of Austin, Texas and will be followed by additional recording later this year for a full release.

For the video, Bibeau recruited producer/directer Justin Mosley at Dark Letter Entertainment. Justin previously wrote, produced, and directed new film "The Devil's Deal," which was recently released internationally through Lionsgate.

Bibeau vocalist / songwriter Drew Theiring comments: "We wanted to shoot the video with a heavy emphasis on our performance. At the same time, everyone in the band knew we needed to balance the five plus minute song with a narrative that reflected a potential post apocalyptic vision of the future. We also wanted a video that incorporates some of the elements from our artwork, band logo and live show written into the video treatment's storyline."

“We were also hoping to convey the look, feel and flow of some of the classic, timeless rock and metal videos from the height of MTV's popularity," added Robin Bibeau (guitarist). "At the end of the day, we were all confident that Justin Mosley was our guy to help us pay homage to the classic video era.”

Celestial Ruin Streaming "Firestorm"

Combining a heavenly destruction of heavy riffs with beautiful melodies, Vancouver, BC's symphonic metal band Celestial Ruin creates catchy, singable, and epic tunes that draw on lyrical themes of fantasy and horror.

New EP "Pandora" is set for release on May 20th and today another single comes online - ch eck out "Firestorm" below. Vocalist Larissa Dawn comments on the track:

"‘Firestorm' is one of my favourite songs on the album! I still get goosebumps when I hear the ending. The song is about being trapped in a destructive relationship/life. Feeling caged and being continuously wounded yet still finding a reason to stay. Think of how it would feel to be in a cage. No sunlight, no fresh air and knowing that no matter what you did you could never be free again. That feeling of captivity and acceptance, that everyday you would die over and over again. But if you listen close to the lyrics, you will realize that the only thing holding this person in that cage…..is themselves.” More...
