The Dawn Of Ashes has arrived, and its being heralded with new extreme metal opus "Daemonolatry Gnosis!"
This symphonic black / death metal mashup officially arrives June 9th, 2017 via Metropolis Records and features 12 crushing tracks including a Mayhem cover and a guest vocal performance from Cradle of Filth's Lindsay Schoolcraft.
With the follow-up to last year's "Theophany" now on the horizon, I checked in with Kristof Bathory from Dawn Of Ashes to discuss the album and his devotion to the left hand path.
While prepping for the interview I was scrolling through the band's Facebook page and I both cringed and chuckled when I saw this wonderfully, ludicrously offensive meme. I immediately begin understand why the Dawn Of Ashes entry in our Pit Stories column went the way that it did... For those who love their offensive online memes, I also got a good laugh at this Easter post from the band. Memery aside, check out our full interview with Dawn Of Ashes below.

Finnish progressive metal outfit Oddland has issued a newly-filmed video this week, ahead of the band's European tour with label mates Wolverine and Until Rain, which kicks off this Wednesday.
Oddland's new video was filmed and edited by Ville Viitanen for a brand new acoustic version of "Unknown," which initially appeared in a fully heavy/electric version of the band's second album, "Origin," released in September 2016 through Laser's Edge division Sensory Records.
Issues the band on this acoustic version of the song: "We've been fiddling around with acoustics every now and then and really fell in love with the idea of making an acoustic version of a song on Origin. 'Unknown' seemed the most fitting candidate, and luckily, we were able to book the beautiful medieval castle of our hometown Turku to record this performance. It was really the perfect choice with the haunting ambience and enchantingly echoing stone walls." More...

Long-defunct group Thoughts Of Ionesco will release a first new studio recording since 2001 this June via Corpse Flower Records.
Recording a first ever record when two thirds of the band members were still in high school and breaking up when most were barely twenty-one-years old, it's a wonder that this infamous Detroit outfit even lasted the few years it did. Confrontational to audiences, uninterested in record labels, exceedingly dark and heavy, the band played music that was once referred to by Alternative Press magazine as, "the ultimate realization of pain through sound."
Over the years, the guys reappeared on the Detroit music scene with new bands: Hoen in The Holy Fire and Leaving Rouge, Miller in the Holy Fire, and Repa with Paradise. Seventh Rule eventually collected the band's recorded output into the compilation "The Scar Is Our Watermark." Issued in June 2006, the album also included a bonus in-depth documentary DVD that chronicled the band's brief, volatile career with live footage and interviews.
Now, Thoughts Of Ionesco returns with the band's first new recorded material in nearly two decades. Titled "Skar Cymbals," the four-track EP was captured and mixed by Jeremy Mendicino with Dave DeCristo at Signal Kitchen in Burlington, Vermont in March 2017 with additional tracking by Gabe Doman at Pharmhouse Studio in Dearborn, Michigan, and the whole acerbic package then mastered by James Plotkin (OLD, Scorn, Khanate, Khlyst et al). Bassist Dan Briggs comments: "The genesis of the 'Coma Ecliptic' filming was based around capturing the look and feel of the show our lighting director Chris Hill produced for the full album set. It's such an important record for us and our progression as a band and the visual representation captures the moods of our tragic tale so well. It's the perfect way to wrap up the last two years we've been living with this album day in and day out!" More...

Russian blackend death metal troupe Freiheit is gearing up to release a new album titled "Madness. Hatred. Death" via Grimm Distribution.
While the album may not be dropping until May 5th, today we've got an advance listen of an all-consuming banger of a track that roughly translates to "The Corps of Death."
Freiheit is a young metal band hailing from Arkhangelsk, Russia and the name is translated as “Freedom” from German, since the members do not limit themselves in their work, and typical genre rules don't mean much for them either. Freiheit is freedom of self-expression, with no place for pleasing political and religious dogmas.
Just three months ago, Steve Grimmet of Steve Grimmet's Grim Reaper had his leg unexpectedly amputated after being rushed to the hospital following a live show.
Now Steve is back up and walking again thanks to a super metal prosthetic leg. Talk about work ethic and dedication to the fans: the dude was even celebrating Record Store Day last weekend by signing music at Holmes Music Swindon!
He has now released some footage and images of the new prothestic, which can be seen below or by following the official Steve Grimmet's Grim Reaper Facebook profile here.
Prior to the infection that caused the amputation, Grim Reaper last released the "Walking in the Shadows" album back in September of 2016.
The follow-up to 2014 opus "Citadel" (reviewed here) has been brewing for some time in the Ne Obliviscaris camp, and now the band is seeking local Australian fans to appear on the album directly. The group issued this statement about seeking fans to sing along:
"Sooooooo....... there is a section in one of the songs that will feature on the new album that has some 'group vocal' parts written and we thought, what better way to get a crowd together to sing on the record than from our Ne Obluminati family so that some of you get the chance to sing on the album!
WHERE: Melbourne, Australia
DATE: Saturday April 29 (exact time TBC - likely sometime afternoon/evening)
"You don't need to be an amazing singer, the melody is fairly simple, but you do need to be able to sing in tune. You'll be in a group of somewhere between 10-30 people so have no fear if you're not a super confident singer! More details via this location." More...
Progressive death metal band Barren Earth is currently working on the follow-up to 2015 album "On Lonely Towers" (reviewed here). The band just checked in with this update:
"Greetings Earthlings! Check out the clip below, in which the newest member of the BE-family, Antti 'Lil' Wizard' Myllynen, lays down some epic leads!
"At the moment, Sami is in Woodshed Studio putting the final flourish on the album with his magical shreddery. This is becoming our most intense and adventurous record yet, and we are incredibly exited for you all to hear it!" More...
Need some smooth travel across the universe and into another plane of existence this morning? We've got a dimensional-pushing premiere for you to kick the week off with new track "Planes Of Creation" from The Thirteen Sun!
"Planes Of Creation" is taken off "Stardust," the debut album from these Transylvanian progressive metal Argonauts, and is due to be released on May 12th. Pre-orders are online here.
The story of the band begins in 2011 when Radu (vocals and lead guitars) started writing the first songs together with Marius Muntean (keyboards). They both came at that particular time from different areas of musical styles but had a lot of common roots as well and the idea to create music combining elements from different genres to strike a balance.
This later became the essence of the whole project, making music through shared experiences that is set to make one escape the confinements of routine and be able to gaze outside the limits. Because the night skies often brings one to wonder of the limitless possibilities surrounding us, it occurred as a natural outlet to set a starting point of the story that would unfold from that sea of possibilities above.
In 2012 Septimiu Harsan (drums) and Marius Licu (guitars) joined the band and the structure of the songs was then crystallized for what was to become the first material, a self-released EP named "Genesis" in December of 2012. In 2016 The band started recordings a first proper studio album named "Stardust" in Consonance Studio (Timisoara) having Edmond Karban (Negura Bunget/Dordeduh) as producer and also as guest vocals on the album, with the mastering being done by Martin Zeller.
Having an atmospheric touch in its essence and also an experimental side to the entire concept, the band has found an ideal place to expose the light of the "Stardust" album, that place being Aural Music, where experimental and ambient are very familiar words and boundaries are being redefined and explored constantly.
