We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week, Mark Chapman, lead singer/lead guitarist for the So Cal thrash metal band Attackhead, shares a story of playing for the U.S. Marines:
A few months ago we were performing at a So Cal Marine base and it was very clear that the Marines were heavy metal deprived. While we were setting up, the Marines were drinking and playing pool. As soon as we started our set, a massive pit formed. Let me tell you, when you combine metal, booze and aggressive Marines, the pit is insane. The problem is, the pit was on a tile floor which quickly became slippery with spilled beer. About half way through our set a Marine came flying out of the pit and hit my mic stand while I was singing. The mic hit me in the mouth and I got an instant fat lip. The mic and stand then fell over and stopped working. I had to move over to a back-up mic to finish the song until the mic was replaced.
The Marine was helped up by his brothers and rejoined the pit like nothing had happened. We thoroughly enjoy all of our performances, but the ones for the military are always wild and crazy.
You can see more of Attackhead at attackhead.com and pick up their latest CD, “Voices in the Dark – Second Attack,” which was released on January 25, 2011. The band also recently posted a video for their song “Make Me Suffer.”
Be sure to check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.
Supergroup T.R.A.M, which features members of Animals As Leaders, Suicidal Tendencies and The Mars Volta, has announced its signing with Sumerian Records. The band's debut outing "Lingua Franca" will be released through the label in May. Multi-instrumentalist Adrian Terrazas of The Mars Volta commented on T.R.A.M. by saying:
"Tosin Abasi and I were originally introduced by a mutual friend, Raanen Bozzio, last summer. This meeting also served as my first introduction to Animals As Leaders and Javier Reyes. Since then, Abasi, Reyes and I have developed a great relationship.
"We got together almost every day to try out ideas and after a month we had already formulated a majority of the record. At this point we contacted Eric Moore, an incredible drummer and the most joyful person to be around, and soon everything we had envisioned rhythmically came together on our fist meeting/recording session (at the Farias productions studios) on what is now T.R.A.M.
"I never know how people will respond to our music, I just never know! My goal is to try to instill a strong feeling or energy in people and I feel that collectively we achieved this goal tenfold with this new project. We all have a great enthusiasm and desire to perform this material live and see this band further develop. We look forward to hearing what you all think of it."

New York hardcore legends Agnostic Front are less than three weeks away from releasing their latest album "My Life, My Way" in North America. Frontman Roger Miret recently took some time to reflect on the upcoming release and outlined each song track by track. Today will be the first installment of this series as Roger speaks about the first four songs on the album. Roger's thoughts on the tracks can be read below.
1. City Streets - This song is about growing up in the streets of NYC back in the day. It tells the story of how hard times as a kid made me a better person today. Learning from my mistakes and changing the negative times into a positive. Giving back to my mentor, the streets of New York City!
2. More Than A Memory - A song written in the memory of Mike's mom. How she influenced him to always follow his heart no matter what. She will never be forgotten!
3. Us Against The World - Talks about fighting against oppression, and against the people that stand in our way to live the way we wanna live. Stand up for your rights!
4. My Life My Way - Speaks about how I always did things on my own terms. Learning the hard way and always staying true to myself and this movement I adore staying genuine to what I believed in. So I will do it my way!

Militia has issued the following announcement about re-issuing a vinyl EP and working on an upcoming album:
"Twenty-five years ago, Militia released a 3-song 12" vinyl EP called 'The Sybling.' The first pressing was only 100 copies. As a result, 'The Sybling' became one of the rarest metal records, selling for between $1100 - $3000 on internet auctions over the past 10 years.
"Fast-forward to 2011, and Militia has risen again, thanks to the legacy of 'The Sybling.' One of the most often-asked questions has been 'Will The Sybling ever be re-released in vinyl?' We are proud to announce that the answer, finally, is YES!
"Militia has partnered with Metaleros & High Roller Records to release 'The Second Coming$', a limited-edition 12" vinyl release consisting of 1000 copies, 750 in black & 250 in silver vinyl. It will feature a 4-page, full color insert, full color back and A4 poster. Both 'The Sybling' EP and the 'Regiments of Death' demo will appear on this release, along with the band’s 1986 demo entitled 'No Submission' and other early recordings.
"Metaleros/High Roller will be unveiling 'The Second Coming' on April 29-30 at the Keep It True Festival in Germany. The album will also be available directly from the band, with the date for pre-orders to be announced in a few days. This will likely be the final release of 1980's era Militia recordings!
"After overcoming obstacle after obstacle throughout 2010, Militia is now making very significant progress in the recording of the new album 'A Call To Arms.' We fully expect to have the album completed this spring and released this summer! This full-length album will contain the first new Militia songs composed by our original line-up since 1985. We can't wait to unleash this album to the metal world! Thanks to all of you for your patience and support!"

Svartsot has issued the following announcement about canceling the band's previously scheduled Hamburg show and update about recording new material:
"With great regret, we have to inform that the show at Kaiserkeller in Hamburg on Thursday March 10th has been canceled. The reasons for this are bad ticket pre-sales combined with the decision of one of the support acts to drop out, leaving us with no backline.
"Instead, we will be concentrating on the recording of the new album, which is currently taking place at LSD Studios in Lübeck under the careful guidance of Lasse Lammert."
The band also recently issued a statement about the themes of the new album, which can be read at this location.

It will also feature a 'Frequencer Version by Stig E. Antonsen of our album-song Oblivion.'"
Sorrowful Angels will also be supporting Paradise Lost at an upcoming Greek show. Details are available here.
Swedish melodic death metal act Scar Symmetry has just posted a new song by the name of "Illuminoid Dream Sequence" to the band's official Facebook profile at this location.
Commented drummer Henrik Ohlsson: "Illuminoid Dream Sequence displays an encounter with the unseen and insane ethereal forces that guide the members of the Illuminati. These forces use humans as portals into our world and all they want is to dominate and control everything at any cost. The music for the song is very special since it goes from pretty progressive yet mellow parts into pure insanity and then back again!"
The band's new album "The Unseen Empire" (which marks the bands second album with singers Robban Karlsson and Lars Palmqvist) will be out April 15th, 2011 via Nuclear Blast.
Polish death metal act Decapitated continue working at Radio Gdansk Studio in Poland recording the band's Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s "Organic Hallucinosis." Bassist Filip "Heinrich" Halucha has checked in from the studio with the following update:
"The sound we've worked out for the bass recording is huge, nasty, and crushing. Thanks to this, we've come up with a couple of arrangements where the bass comes out of the background and plays the major part. I must admit that, with his old school approach, Arek ‘Malta’ Malczewski has fit well in the concept of this album. His choice of instrument levels was superb - it all sounds mighty yet there's no mutual interference. The bass recording took us three days plus an extra day for sound search.
"After much deliberation and testing different solutions, we chose a configuration of two amps: a tube Ampeg SVT Classic and a transistor B4R, one of which had huge distortion. I should add that we did not use any line signals and all the signals come from microphones, which recently has been a rarity as far as bass recording goes in metal music. Taking into account the ‘no compromise’ approach of Vogg and Malta, it has been undoubtedly the hardest and the most advanced session I have ever participated in.
"Tracking lasted from the beginning of a song to its end; ‘copying and pasting’ any parts was out of the question. Due to this, the session was much more demanding and time-consuming, but the final effect is the music sounding more lively and natural. Everything has been recorded using instruments only; it's awesome without all of these digital fireworks - advanced editions, plastic drums, pasted riffs, etc. It reeks of the old metal spirit. There 's proper metal groove and speed but also a specific vibe which adds up to what this type of music is all about."
Decapitated’s fifth studio album is being produced by Wacek Kieltyka and sound engineered by Arkadiusz "Malta" Malczewski. Drums were recorded with Daniel Bergstrand, who is also handling mixing duties. The band will be self-releasing the new album in Poland.
Swiss metallers Samael have posted a track by track breakdown of the band's upcoming album "Lux Mundi." You can check out the commentary from the band below.
"Luxferre" Opening track of the album to set the tone musically and lyrically... it was originally called “More Light!” a reference to “Mehr Licht!” which is believed to be the last words pronounced by German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on his dying bed.
"Let My People Be!" Walking the fine line between anarchy and society while prophesying a new era . Middle tempo track with a haunting chorus.
"Of War" Musically heavy as heavy can be. This is the second time S A M A E L wrote a complete song on the subject of war. "Valkyries'New Ride" (Solar Soul) was more or less directly inspired by the ongoing war in Iraq while "Of War" treats the topic in a general sense.
"Antigod" was the first single released on 19th November 2010. It shows the new album’s direction and gives a taste of what's about to come. Lyrically the song is a firm stand against any kind of religion.
"For A Thousand Years" Heavy middle tempo track which questions our view on immortality. This is actually the full orchestration of the song "Ten Thousand Years" which appears on the "Antigod" single.
“The Shadow Of The Sword” The Quran says “the gates of Paradise are under the shadows of the swords”… This is yet another song against religion and more particularly against monotheist religions, an up-tempo aggressive track with some reminiscence of "Rain" (Passage) as Waldemar (Sorychta) noticed.
"In The Deep" One of the most experimental song on the album, tribal rhythms with a very distinctive guitar riff. It is a trip in the depths of the S A M A E L ‘s soul.
"Mother Night" Probably the heaviest ballad ever written… After the power ballads, the progressive ones, the time is right for some ultra heaviness in that genre…
“Pagan Trance” Part of the song existed for a long time but we’ve never found a way to complete it until today. It’s a ¾ song just as “Antigod” but it is more open and somehow more mellow. The lyrics are about connections between eternal feminine and nature.More...

"The upcoming album by One Without will not be released by German Lifeforce Records as the debut album 'Thoughts of a Secluded Mind' was. One Without is currently talking to labels and looking at options for the release. More news about the album will be posted later."

Amalgama has posted live footage online of the band performing "Spirits of the Dead," which can be viewed after the jump. The band also commented on recent live shows:
"Hopefully you had a chance to catch a bit of our on-air performance back in February as we made our triumphant return to 91.5fm WRPI's Wednesday Night Live program. The third time was definitely the charm as we descended back down underground into the performance studio and set up all our gear. There were quite a few surprises for the evenings show: we broke out 'Dogs of War,' 'Slave New World,' and a little number by a band Thin Lizzy called 'Jailbreak' to close the evening out right.
"There was something so rewarding about all of us striking that first chord all together before Justin's snare snapped us into the song for the first time. We have quite a bit of footage from the show that evening that we can't wait to share with you all. A huge thank you has to go out to Kathryn and Kiki for their hosting duties and their patience with all four of us as we wandered around the station poking and prodding the equipment (and the staff). All the guys and girls who run the studio down there really have a great thing going with their station and we're planning on coming back again as soon as we can. Another huge thank you goes out to Doug for his mastery of the board during our set and his constant professionalism. The mix sounded great and when we get our greedy little hands on it we can share it with the world. More...

Having parted with Metal Blade Records in early 2009, the band is still in search of a record deal.
Let’s be honest: Instrument workshops or clinics are usually either self-indulgent, all about show, or strictly educational. You’ve got your Michael Angelo Batio types who think a four-necked guitar is just the coolest thing and can’t wait to start noodling for the crowd. You’ve got your Tim Yeung (Vital Remains, Divine Heresy) types that like to show off ridiculous dexterity and muscle control to the max. You’ve even got your Melissa Cross types, which are mostly educational.
That’s not saying they’re not amazing at what they do, but rarely do you see a musician who checks their ego at the door, talks about their career instead of their techniques, plays more obscure songs, and doesn’t try to instruct everyone in the audience. The drummer from Grammy-nominated American heavy metal titans Lamb of God, Chris Adler, did just that. More...
Legendary Swedish death metal vocalist Tomas "Goatspell" Lindberg (AT THE GATES, GROTESQUE, DISFEAR) has contributed a foreword to the upcoming 744-page hardcover book "METALION: The Slayer Mag Diaries," by Jon Kristiansen. Lindberg's connection to Norway's Slayer Mag dates to the 1980s, when he and Kristiansen were part of a core group of Swedish and Norwegian headbangers during the wild early years of the Scandinavian extreme metal scene.
"Metalion and his Slayer Mag are responsible for me (and a lot of other Swedes) getting into the death metal underground," begins Lindberg. "I clearly remember how proud I was when Grotesque got a mention in the classic mag-this meant more to me than anything else at the time!"
Part anthology, part memoir, and years in the making, "METALION" includes over 600 reproduction pages from every issue of Slayer mag, spanning from the early 1980s through 2010. In addition, author Jon Kristiansen recounts his life's story, from alienated outsider to central figure in Norwegian black metal to world-weary metal survivor. The book also features over 100 rare photographs, including two color sections and a portrait gallery of photographs taken by Kristiansen himself.
"The greatest heavy metal story ever told" will be available June 6, 2011, wherever books are sold, and is available for preorder now with two bonus limited patches from Bazillion Points Books, "America's smallest but heaviest book publisher."
