Every week in Unearthing the Metal Underground, we take a look at three quality bands that haven't gotten as much exposure yet as they should. This week we'll dig into three rocking outfits all hailing from Croatia.
Croatia isn't typically the first band one thinks of when looking for new bands, but metal is famous for being an international phenomena with amazing groups coming from the least well known places. We'll start off our look at Croatian extreme metal acts with two bands heavily influenced by black metal and one that heads into much more groovy territory.
J.W. Pozoj is an act that mixes the old school black metal vibe with a series of avant-garde and artsy song arrangements. From the abrasive and harsh vocals to the atmospheric clean segments, there's a little of something for everyone from this fantastic act that should be more well known among black metal fans.
The group has a trilogy of linked albums going through the cycle of “Birth,” “Escape,” and “Return.” You can check out Metalunderground.com's review of "Escape of Pojoz" at this location or read our interview with the band members discussing their music here.
To get a taste of what J.W. Pozoj has to offer, check out the band's MySpace page or listen to the songs “I Am The Forest," “Careless Are Your Souls," and “Hisperia” in the clips below.

The album is scheduled to be released on May 23rd through Militia Guard Music, UDR and EMI and features the following track listing:

Los Angeles black metal collective Lightning Swords of Death, who were slated to kick off a month-long U.S. tour supporting death metal legends Master last week, were forced to head back home when the headliners were prevented from entering the country.
Commented vocalist Autarch of the unfortunate tour cancellation: "Know this: Lightning Swords of Death was thoroughly prepared for this tour only to be thwarted by circumstances beyond our control. I assure you all, we shall return with a vengeance in the near future.
"Already the black teet of kaos have begun to drip strange opportunity upon the ashes of this Master disaster. I shall reveal more details as they materialize."

5. Fins Of Cxaxukluth
Sweden's Malfeitor has issued the following announcement about reuniting to work on new material:
"17 years of waiting is finally over! Malfeitor are finally working on new material for release during 2011! Check out the new track 'Scenes From A Slaughterhouse!' After Malfeitor split in 1994, Moberg and Parkkila recently started Blood Mortized as an old school Swedish death metal band, to recapture a small shade of Tomas Skogsberg's famous sunlight-sound. In 2010, Moberg decided to leave the band and focus on the resuscitation of Malfeitor!
"What we now will hear, is a more intense, faster and brutal Malfeitor, which influences mainly come from big acts as Immolation and Deicide, but the music retains the Swedish influences, it is possible to discern a lot OSSDM in the material.
"Malfeitor is currently looking for labels who are interested in releasing the new material, otherwise the material will be released without a label! Keep an eye out on Myspace and Facebook for updates!"
You can check out the new song "Scenes from a Slaughterhouse" at this location.
Female fronted act Lyriel will be re-releasing the album "Paranoid Circus" with two bonus tracks on April 1st, 2011. The band has now posted a music video online for the album's title track, which can be viewed below.

Oregon’s atmospheric blackened drone project Echtra will release a second full-length offering through China based Temple Of Torturous Records on March 31st, 2011. The band commented on the album:
"Entitled 'Paragate,' the record is an essay of origins; a psycho-physiological journey into the Otherworld. This aural chronicle of the soul’s flight from corporeality issues from the Land before spiraling down into the heart of Earth, in the process loosening the stranglehold of dislocation modern humans labor under. Echoes of the Hunter stalking the prey of meaning ring out in the caverns of Spirit while arcane dances commence by the fireside; the chthonic depths offer their healing flame to our essence. After plumbing the lengths of these tunnels he is risen to the Heavens, taking flight in order to fully embody the liberty written in our blood. Above and Below make love in the flesh of the Seeker, engorged with breath and bearing the weight of the sweetest fruit.
"Obliterating genre conventions in favor of the creation of an immersive soundworld, Echtra’s Paragate integrates the distortion and vigor of black metal sonics with the resolve and earthiness of acoustic songcraft. Arpeggios swirl in etheric spirals, augmenting and negating each other in a dance of intimateness, rhythms altering and disappearing altogether as they herald of the stations of the Seeker’s peregrination.
"Chronicled in the long ago of MMVI, performed Yule MMVII, and now issued on CD from the dark of Winter MMXI by Echtra and Temple Of Torturous, as dictated by the Spirits and for the benefit of all beings. This rite of transits facilitates rest, a trust in the truth of Life."
The cover artwork for the album can be found at this location.
Black metal act Stielas Storhett will be releasing a new album titled "Expulse" in May through Code666 Records. Front man Damien stated about the album:
"For so long I've been awaiting the second Stielas Storhett LP record to be complete. Finally the most part of work is left behind, all of the tracks are played and sung and the last word is for sound engineer. Much time has passed since the first Stielas Storhett release so you should NOT expect 'Vandrer-2.'
"However all of those who enjoyed the first album, those who got the true core of Stielas Storhett art not formally but by heart, won't be disappointed. 'Expulse' is a breakout through style boundaries musically letting create a needed wave of melancholy, affliction and hate in that way, and the poetry is echoed by that atmosphere."
The album's track listing is as follows:
1. Dying Delirium
2. Buried by Storm and Eternal Darkness
3. All Paths Lead to Oblivion
5. Two Lifeless Months
7. Angel Of Death
Sleep Serapis Sleep has issued the following announcement about parting with Static Age Records:
"There are three big, scary pieces of information that we want to share with everyone today:
1. We are no longer affiliated with Static Age Records
2. Rich Yocum is leaving (and being replaced by Joe Balsewicz)
3. The release of our new record is being postponed
"Likely Asked Questions, Answered: What happened with Static Age? Disagreements. As a point of professional courtesy we have little else to say on the subject. Truthfully, we are all excited to be independent again. This band means everything to us; we take our instruments and songs very seriously. If we find we are working with someone with whom we disagree in matters of ethical and professional integrity, you can expect that relationship to fade and fast. We do hope to find a label to call home, one that shares our outlook on music.
"Why is Rich leaving? Rich is hanging up his 'DIY Touring' hat. Yes, it is a huge bummer, but we will all survive. We still kick it with him and love him to death. He'll probably turn up in another project soon, so be on the lookout for that. His replacement, Joe Balsewicz, is show-ready and we will have no show delays or cancellations moving forward. His first show will be The $4 Show at the Miramar, March 26th. (Pssst, Joe is single, so get at him ladies... and dudes.) More...
Margin of Error has completed the recording of a music video for the song "Your Life in Playback." Front man Travis Meyers commented in the video:
"This video is extremely accurate to how I wanted this song and the entire record portrayed because I wrote the script, and I am the killer. It really doesn’t get anymore true to itself than that."
Travis has chosen long time friend and director Steve Shilson to help bring his vision to life, commenting “Steve was such an easy choice for me. Being friends for so long and him being very talented and familiar with my material I knew that he could understand where my head was creatively. Together this video will be a perfect catastrophe.”
Margin of Error’s new record, “What You Are About to Witness” is a concept record based on the thought process of a serial killer. The music video will be released in April and photos from the video shoot can be found here.
Vocalist Helena of Imperia has posted a video clip online to discuss the band's forthcoming album "Secret Passion." You can check out the clip below.

Portugal's Heavenwood has issued the following statement about the band releasing its new album:
"The 4th new album from Heavenwood 'Abyss Masterpiece' is out now by Listenable Records! Today is the day once it's March 14th! We would like everyone to buy this records instead of just downloading it, this is a message to the Heavenwood fans mostly because we noticed, even before the released date, that 'Abyss Masterpiece' is having thousands and thousand of illegal downloads. Perhaps you're thinking 'oohh just another download bla bla preaching stuff.'
"No my dear friend this is the point: Heavenwood doesn't live from music but the persons who release the albums, invest in the production, artwork, distribution, and promotion does do, so as usual in any business, if you have a company than you must have at least the return from the investment you have done and that's the support you're doing to the band you enjoy and for the label (in this case our international label french Listenable Records) exist and support future albums from Heavenwood with decent sound, decent artwork, decent promotion and most important of all decent distribution for you all to have the opportunity of buying our new record at your local music store even if you're from Europe, North or South America, Asia or even from Emirates.
"Listenable Records is one of the few metal record companies that's working for years with passion, honesty and releasing new talents to the world such as Gojira, Textures, Hacride just to mention some of the new metal bands that nowadays you enjoy because of Listenable Records A&R Laurent Merle and his hard working staff!
"We do understand that you download it if you want to listen first, we understand if you don't know Heavenwood then you will want to listen to it first and then decide but if you're really a fans from our art don't forget to buy the original and keep it on your collection, we do this for you guys! A strong Portuguese musical and friendly hug."

Excalion has checked in with the following update about recording new material:
"Small status report after a very intensive recording weekend. We hit rehearsal space yesterday with Tero and Jappe to record demos for 7 new songs. We tried a new approach by putting bass tracks to the tape simultaneously as we recorded drums. We finally said goodbye to our old .zip discs and used a digital recorder. Hurray!
"Was a blast. The songs are really tight and was nice to try out my new drumkit in the demo sessions. Had again some technical problems with the mics. Some of them always brake, don't know why? Of course was a bit of getting used to with the new recorder as well. Luckily Jappe is always eager to get familiar with those.
"Yesterday we spend some 6 hours or a bit more to put up the equipment, to try the sounds and recorded 5 of the songs. The songs all have still working titles which are getting weirder every year (the working titles I mean). Of these 5 songs, most we're bit faster songs including again some really nice and fresh elements for Excalion. More...
Today Is The Day is in the process of finishing up a ninth studio album, “Pain Is A Warning,” the band's first since 2007’s “Axis Of Eden.” With another record comes a whole new line-up. In addition to the ever-present Steve Austin, the new members include Wetnurse bassist Ryan Jones and drummer Curran Reynolds. While the band’s line-up has been shaky since the early days, the music has been far from inconsistent.
Their weird noise rock/metal has captivated a loyal following since debut album “Supernova.” This new album promises to do the same, though with a different approach than previous records. I had the chance to speak to Reynolds a few days ago about this approach, as well as a status update on Wetnurse and why this line-up may be here to stay for the long run. More...
