The world may be falling apart, but French metallers Minushuman aren't going to take it lying down, as they are currently recording the soundtrack to a worldwide rebellion. The as-yet-untitled album, and follow-up to the 2008 release "Watch the World Die," deals with themes of rising up and fighting the establishment and the events currently going on in places like Libya and Egypt.
Minushuman guitarist Thomas Billerey and drummer Gaspard Jeanty-Ruard recently corresponded with me about the impending new album, which is set for a June 20th release. The duo discusses writing the songs and lyrics, getting signed to Season of Mist, and the French metal scene in the interview below. More...

Zushakon has checked in with the following announcement about recruiting a new drummer:
"Zushakon bids a mighty farewell to it's co founder, versatile multi instrumentalist genius - Armaros aka DSV (David Swales). It's been both a pleasure & honor working with Armaros & like the saying goes, all good things must come to an end. I first met Armaros at Tomegatherion, a store owned by Shyaithan Impiety at that time & me with a share in it.
"That was way back in early 2006 while he was still a 16 year old kid & a regular customer of our store. I saw in him a potential of a genius, a greatness. Later he would go on to harness that potential to create excellent music with Grigori, Orthanc, Zushakon & countless others. Zushakon salutes Armaros with much gratitude & respect for all that he has done for the band for the past 5 years.
"While Armaros exits, Zushakon welcomes a new addition to it's ranks. Commandant Belial Hatehammer now joins the Zushakon kult in it's artillery attack. However, we are still actively looking for a new guitarist & bassist to complete the plans for future blitzkrieg. All friends, supporters, well wishers & enemies of the Zushakon horde will be kept updated in the coming months."

Polish technical death metal band Decapitated is currently working at Radio Gdansk Studio in Poland, recording the band's Nuclear Blast debut and follow-up to 2006’s "Organic Hallucinosis."
Guitarist & founding member Wacek "Vogg" Kieltyka checks in once again from the studio:
"Hi Everyone! We are half-way through with guitar tracking. All is going according to the plan and in a few days we are starting with the bass. The guitars sound heavy yet very selective. I must admit we have come up with a very original sound that in my opinion resembles 'black storm clouds.' Heinrich [bassist] is coming to the studio the day after tomorrow and we will crack on with the bass then. Malta is a very demanding engineer and he is controlling the whole situation meticulously. The new material is beginning to take its shape and it is getting more and more interesting. Take it easy folks!"
Decapitated’s fifth studio album is being produced by Wacek Kieltyka and sound engineered by Malta Arkadiusz Malczewski. Drums have been recorded with Daniel Bergstrand, who is also handling mixing duties.
The band's previous studio update is also available to be read at this location.

Agathodaimon has checked in with the following announcement about postponing the band's previously schedule show in Istanbul and update about working on new material:
"Time for some news! First the bad news; sadly the gig which was supposed to take place in Istanbul/Turkey the 5th of March is postponed. It’s not canceled, but will be postponed to October, due to various reasons. We were looking forward to playing there, but the circumstances did not allow a proper organization, so we agreed with the organizer that this gig will be held in October instead. Further news once we have them!
"Besides, we would like to remind that we’ll play a nice, tiny club-gig in our 'Hometown' Mainz at the Caveau-Club, the 17th of March. Also we have another festival confirmed for the summer: We’ll be headlining the 2nd Monster Metal Meeting which takes place in Gronau (near the dutch border). This takes place the 30.07.
"Besides, we’re mainly working on our upcoming album of course- more news shortly."

Forbidden guitarist Steve Smyth has issued the following announcement about releasing his signature 6 and 7 string BC Rich "Bich" guitars:
"After nearly 3 years of effort put in, I am happy to announce that my BC Rich signature series guitars have been released. I chose everything for these guitars, right down to the finish, and I'm very happy to say my wishes have been met! I have been using the Signature 6 series - this absolute monster - with the mighty Forbidden for the last few years, and I honestly have to say it slays every other guitar I have, straight up! Solid, consistent tone across all the dynamics I need; the feel is incredible plus it's really light for having the heavy woods it has.
"The Signature 7 series version of the guitar has been released as well. This has the same woods as the 6, but with 81-7 and 707 pickups, Grover tuners, and a Floyd Rose tremolo as well. I'm loving this thing… it hasn't left my hands since I got it! This guitar will see use with my new metal band Firehead (debut in late 2011), as well as featured heavily on the new album and live performances coming this year from The EssenEss Project. I hope you'll enjoy these guitars as much as I do. Check them out!" More...

Finland's Barren Earth has checked in from the band's North American tour again with a new road report. You can check out the report below.
"…and then it was time for Canada, again. This time we were in the eastern part of Canada; the Province of Ontario and the city of Toronto. The Toronto gig took place at a venue called the Opera House. During this tour I’ve been constantly referred to as Kasper the Friendly Ghost by the drum technician John. I do not mind this. However, in Toronto I made it clear that the ghost references would have to be upgraded. As we were at the Opera House, I was to be referred to as the Phantom of the Opera. To stress this point, I played a bit of good ol’ Andrew Lloyd Webber with high volume on the keyboards in the echoing auditorium.
"Later on, we learned of the grim history of the Opera House. The building had actually functioned as a real Opera house earlier. But a tragic fire with numerous victims had put an end to the activities. Indeed, one could still smell smoke in the corridors. In addition to this, we heard rumours that the house was haunted. But walking down the corridors, I did not meet my phantom colleague. And maybe that was for the best.
"As the conditions in the tour bus are often quite cramped, there is a danger of getting a bit claustrophobic. The perfect cure for claustrophobia presented itself in Toronto on a visit to the CN Tower. The CN Tower looms 553 metres high in the centre of Toronto, and offers great views of the surrounding area. As it was a sunny day, one could really see far. An additional bonus was the glass floor. Walking on a glass floor on an altitude of 342 metres, whilst looking down, truly removed every symptom of claustrophobia. On the other hand, it did introduce a whole range of symptoms of vertigo…
"Midway through the first song in Quebec City, the audience started to applaud for no apparent reason. Upon watching the performance later on video, the reason became clear. Unbeknownst to us at the time, Mikko’s microphone had been muted, and the vocals became audible only in the middle of the song. That, if any, is a perfect reason for applause, and had we realized at the time what had happened, we would’ve probably applauded too.
"It was a very good thing that the three last Canadian shows (Toronto, Quebec City, and Montreal) took place towards the latter part of the tour, since the venues were the biggest, and the audiences the most enthusiastic so far. It was good to have been playing more or less the same set for weeks before entering concert situations of this magnitude. The concert in Montreal in particular, with its 2000-seat auditorium almost full, was most exhilarating. More...
Burial Vault recently parted ways with the band's drummer. The group has now issued the following update about recruiting Immo Groeneveld:
"Hey Burial Vault-Devotees! It's time to announce the new man behind the drums.
"After a long time of searching (our former drummer Daniel was actively involved), we thought that Immo Groeneveld (Diary Of A Fanatic, Tranquillity Lane) would be the right one for us. The rehearsals have been really awesome.
"At this point we want to thank everyone who made an application. The new line-up will make its debut on March 11 at the Pumpe in Kiel. We are really looking forward to introduce the new Burial Vault-incarnation to the audience."
Blood Mortized has issued the following update about recording a new full-length album:
"Time is moving closer for us to record the new full length album 'The Key To A Black Heart!' If you liked the Bestial EP, be prepared for an album that continues in the same direction. The material is more diverse though, displaying a perfect mix of fast songs and heavy as fuck material. Expect unpolished, filthy, dirty, pounding and grinding Swedish Death Fucking Metal De Luxe!
"We will let you in on some of the recordings with photos, videos and blogs. How ever we have no clue why you would want to see a bunch of ugly guys on your computer screen, but what ever tickles you, right!? Haha! Song titles and so forth will be revealed in due time. The new album will once again be recorded and produced by drummer Mattias Borgh's at his 'Underworld Recording.'
"As some of you might have heard we now have a new second guitar player! His name is Gustaf Myrin, he is an old friend of Anders and they used to play together in a band called Pathalog. Since then he has also played in among others Apes IQ. So, like us, please welcome him to the band with a big cheer! So stay tuned and when recording starts we will let you know and invite you for the ride of it's creation!"
You can also check out the teaser trailer for the "Bestial" EP at this location.
Sweden's Graveyard will release the new album "Hisingen Blues" on March 25th in Europe. The album was produced, recorded, and mixed in analog by Don Alsterberg at Don Pierre Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The band offered the following commentary on the recording sessions: “We recorded the album in several different sessions. As much as possible, we tried to do live. All of it is 100% analog… and we'd like to take this opportunity to once and for all kill the argument that recording analog is ‘retro’ or that we've got a ‘retro’ sound. Analog recording is just one technique among many. Just like you build a house using bricks, wood or whatever. Paint a picture using oil, acrylic or Photoshop. Our music sounds best recorded analog; other bands sound best using nothing but computers and a thousand filters. Analog recording brings warmth and an organic feeling to the music, that's what we like.
"To us, ‘retro’ is often something negative, meaning an unimaginative repetition of what has been or just a carbon copy of something old. We play timeless classic hard rock with a lot of blues and psychedelic influences among many others. And regarding analog being retro: Go through the history of rock and pick your best twenty albums. How many of them have been recorded on computers? Don't mistake classic pieces of work for retro."
The album's track listing is as follows:
1. Ain't Fit To Live Here
2. No Good, Mr. Holden
3. Hisingen Blues
4. Uncomfortably Numb
5. Buying Truth (Tack Och Förlåt)
7. Ungrateful Are The Dead
9. The Siren

It's only fitting, in an ironic way, that Immortal finally arrived in Chicago during a winter when my city was buried under two feet of snow. It's one of those coincidences that I'd have a much easier time appreciating if I wasn't trapped in my own home for four days a mere three weeks before the show. Despite taking almost a decade to return to the Windy City, Immortal was still worth the wait.
Unfortunately I missed all but the last two songs of Absu's set since the CTA thought it was a great idea to name two stops Ashland on the Green Line and I'd personally like to meet whoever was responsible for that decision, so that I can challenge that person to a bloody duel to the death suspended over a pit of lava with spiked clubs. I ended up taking the train in the exact opposite direction towards the second Ashland since jumping on the train saying that it was heading to the Ashland stop seemed like a great idea at the time. That whole ordeal managed to take up over an hour of my life since I ended up at the exact opposite end of Chicago that I wanted to be at. Thank you very much CTA. You really know how to create wonderful, memorable experiences. More...

The band, whose brand of snotty, metallic hardcore punk rock has drawn comparisons to Every Time I Die, The Bronx, Discharge and the Stitches, are recording their full-length debut at BuzzBomb Studio in Orange, CA now with Paul Minor (Terror, H2O, Death By Stereo); the band previously self released an EP.
"Since forming in 2007, the band has toured the entire US several times and has countless regional runs under their belt. They will be out later this month on the 'Road to Metal Fest Tour,' along with Lionheart, Legend, The Great Commission and Monsters. The tour will take them to Jamboree Fest in Toledo, OH and end at New England Metal and Hardcore Fest in Worcester, MA. The band will then do dates back to California on their own."
The band also commented on the singing by saying:
"We’re extremely honored to be a part of such a great label and team at Prosthetic Records. We’ve been tracking the new album with Paul Miner at BuzzBomb Studio and we couldn’t be any happier with the chemistry and the form this monster is taking so far. Without all of our friends, fans and family none of this would be possible. See you guys on the road!"
Progressive hard rock act Earthtone9 has posted the following update about working on new material:
"Brothers and sisters, 2010 was something of a landmark year for earthtone9. After nearly a decade of putting the beast in a box we found that it still had a pulse. The shows at Sonisphere and Damnation were utterly mind blowing, (as was the response to the free ‘Best Of’ album). And the pulse got a little bit stronger.
"During the rehearsals for last year’s festivals we started toying with some new ideas. And here we are in the Spring of 2011 and from out of nowhere we have a raft of new material we REALLY want to share with you. Yep, new songs. And they CRUSH. We seriously have a fire burning."
Just For Fun
American metal act Chimaira has posted a cover of the classic rock song "Wild Thing" from The Troggs. According to the band, the song is a tribute to the recent escapades of Hollywood TV actor Charlie Sheen, known for his work on the hit TV show Two and a Half Men. The band commented on the cover by saying:
"All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Having fun with the current Charlie Sheen phenomenon. Don't take this too seriously. Enjoy!...we're going back to work on the new record...winning!"
