Pit Stories: When Things Go Wrong On Stage

It's Tuesday Pit Story time yet again! This week we shift away from the moshing fans and onto the stage itself.

With so many moving parts and many elements outside the musicians' control, there's always room for something to go wrong during a live show, and dealing with those sudden issues is something every performer needs to learn sooner or later.

For this week's Pit Story, Medevil shares two tales of when things didn't quite go as planned on the stage:

We had a pretty weird set when we played a show at the Railway Club two years back. During the second song of our set, "Mayan Rituals" (now known as "A Sacrifice"), our bass player Eric Wesa's bass string broke and he had to run through the audience and find a bass string. The crowd thought it was awesome, and when Eric came back on stage he arrived just in time to hit the last note of the song. I'm sure he felt like a metal god in that moment.

Also, during this exact show, singer Liam Collingwood collapsed for a few seconds due to dehydration. After the show when we spoke to the people in the crowd, it was pretty funny to hear that they thought it was part of the show. They said he looked like he was just getting really involved in the music and that it was an awesome stage antic.

Medevil unleashed debut full-length album "Conductor Of Storms" last week, with two tracks available for streaming below. For more info on the band, head over to Facebook here. More...

Barishi Streams Full Album

Vermont's gritty progressive metal quartet Barishi is now streaming ambitious new full-length album "Blood from the Lion's Mouth," which can be heard below.

Regarding the album, the band comments: "We're really proud of this album. It was an absolute blast to both write and record. We spent last summer at home in Jamaica, Vermont writing constantly. Our goal was to come up with something that was cohesive as a whole but also had an individuality to each track. Our producer Brian Westbrook really went above and beyond with it's production. He has such clear vision in regards to a song's structure as well as it's sonic potential. It was killer to work with him again."

Barishi's second full-length album, and first for Season of Mist, will be released worldwide on Sept. 16. The album was recorded by Brian Westbrook at PDP Recording in Greenfield, MA during winter 2015-2016, and features cover art by Brian Mercer.

Desertfest Adds Arabrot, Alkderdeel, And Komatsu

The organizers of the Desertfest Belgium festival have checked in with this announcement about adding more bands to this year's lineup:

"You might have thought we had nothing more in store after the three double whammy of Red Fang, Goat, and Graveyard, but Desertfest always has a few tricks left up the sleeve.

"So with this last announcement we fill in the holes in the Desertfest program - which is not to say these bands are filler! With Arabrot and Alkerdeel, we present you with some of the most exciting and original metal to be crafted in Europe. Arabrot has most definitively made their mark on the heavy music scene, and make sure to check Alkerdeel live, as they are one of the most exciting Belgian bands you'll hear.

"Finally, the last name to make the DF Antwerp 2016 bill is the Dutch powerhouse Komatsu. Straight up stoner metal for sure - but if Desertfest is not the place for that, we don't know what is!

"And that's a wrap. Now all you have to do is sit back and relax... no strike that: check if you have your ticket booked, travel arrangements made... and THEN sit back, relax and count the days until DESERTFEST ANTWERP 2016!" More...

British progressive metal forefather SikTh just announced the re-release of acclaimed 2006 sophomore album, "Death of a Dead Day," on the 10th anniversary of its original release, September 30th via Peaceville.

The album's opening track "Bland Street Bloom" was a brutal progressive thrash song with vocalist Mikee W. Goodman penning lyrics inspired by the gentrification of the UK High Street. The song also spawned an animated video (directed by Tim Fox) which was featured regularly on MTV's Headbangers Ball.

Soulburn Releasing New Album

Dutch blackened death / doom group Soulburn just announced the completion of a new, third studio album release, entitled "Earthless Pagan Spirit," and set to drop on November 18th, 2016 via Century Media Records.

Following 2014's "The Suffocating Darkness effort," this new album was recorded in The Netherlands at Harrow Studio as well as Double Noise Studio and then mixed and mastered by Magnus "Devo" Andersson at Endarker Studio Sweden (Marduk, Ofermod, etc.).

Vocalist & bassist and Twan van Geel checked in to say: "Soulburn's 'Earthless Pagan Spirit' marks the band's third full-length album since the 1996 debut album 'Feeding On Angels.' As people often say about a band's third album is that it should show the bands 'true' face. Well, 'Earthless Pagan Spirit' melts the rough elements of the past in perfect balance with the corrosive taste of the new. Showing a band who have set out a delicate blend of old school breathing black metal that strengthens its venom with a poisonous twist of doom and death metal.

"Where its predecessor 'The Suffocating Darkness' already wandered, 'Earthless Pagan Spirit' sets its sails further down the blackest of seas. Lyrically ' Earthless Pagan Spirit' is breathing a Nietzschean storm upon this narrow minded religious plague this world is infested by. A serpent's tongue spreading fear to some, yet a glorified temptation to others. Those who read between the lines may illuminate in its satanic glare and find new meaning in them." More...

Trees Of Eternity Unveils Album Artwork

Trees of Eternity today unveils the magnificent cover art for "Hour of the Nightingale" by Fursy Teyssier (Les Discrets) as pre-orders come online here. The album is due to drop November 11th.

Born out of the partnership of singer / songwriter Aleah Starbridge and guitarist / composer Juha Raivio, Trees of Eternity began as a quiet acoustic collaboration but then sprouted into a full band, with the Norrman brothers (ex-Katatonia, October Tide) on stringed instruments and the ubiquitous Kai Hahto on drums.

Three years of work on the group's debut album were tragically cut short this spring when Aleah passed away during the album's final post-production phase. The work is now finished, and Svart Records is proud to present it to the world to honor the legacy and artistry of Aleah Starbridge.

"The art contains such power and calm beauty, so many hidden messages. It is mystical in the same way that Aleah always was," comments Juha Raivio. "This is a celebration of the music, lyrics and life of Aleah, who so tragically and suddenly crossed the bridge of stars and left this world so young and so early. There really are no words to describe the ultimate weight of the darkness, or the rays of the brightest of light that this album holds within its songs and lyrics. In so many ways this album turned out to be the most important album I've done in my life, and we both loved it from the first note to the last as we wrote it." More...

Guitar player & main songwriter, Thomas Ahlgren, commented on the album: "The new Deranged album, titled 'Struck By A Murderous Siege' is a blend of classical Deranged brutality with a bit of new elements that will fit perfectly both old and new Deranged fans. You can be sure about that! The album, consisting of five fast, grinding and shredding songs and three heavy mid-tempo tunes, will give the listener the most interesting and varied Deranged album so far. Prepare to hear the echoes of serial killers and brutality!" More...

Witchwood To Issue New Album "Handful Of Stars"

One year after the acclaimed debut album "Litanies From The Woods," Italian 70’s hard rockers Witchwood return with a new album "Handful of Stars," to be released by Jolly Roger Records on November 18 2016. A teaser clip for the release can be heard in the player below.

The album will be available as yellow LP limited to 100 copies, LP, CD, and boxset CD with tshirt and sticker (limited to 100). Pre-orders are available here. Two songs are available for streaming at the link.

The band founded by Ricky Dal Pane (ex Buttered Bacon Biscuits, vocals, guitars and main songwriter) will release "Handful Of Stars," featuring 3 unreleased songs, 2 covers - "Flaming Telepath" from Blue Öyster Cult and "Rainbow Demon" from Uriah Heep - a kind of homage and tribute to these two great bands, so important for Witchwood's musical journey, and an unreleased version of the suite "Handful Of Stars," song taken from "Litanies From The Woods" with a new breathless intro, for a total of 45 minutes of music.

“‘Handful Of Stars’ represents an hypothetical band’s cycle as it contains also music based on ideas developed during the recording sessions of ‘Litanies From The Woods’, but left behind because that album was already almost 80 minutes length”, comments Ricky Dal Pane.

"There are 3 unreleased songs and a tribute to two of our favourite bands of all time: ‘Flaming Telepaths’ from Blue Öyster Cult and ‘Rainbow Demon’ from Uriah Heep. We also added an extended version of the song ‘Handful Of Stars’. This is a very well curated album and it’s full of interesting material. It’s not just a filler between two full-length albums as its length is 45 minutes. We are very happy about it and we hope our fans won’t be disappointed." More...

Watch Classic Misfits Lineup Perform "Bullet"

Below you can watch the classic Misfits lineup of singer Glenn Danzig (61), bassist Jerry Only (57) and guitarist Doyle Wolfgang Von Frankenstein (51) perform the track "Bullet", during their first show together since 1983 at the "Denver Riot Fest" past Sunday, September 4th, 2016. They were joined by ex-Slayer drummer Dave Lombardo and Joan Jett guitarist Acey Slade.

Said Danzig at one point during the show addressing the crowd: "About 40 years ago, Jerry and I got onstage in New York and we shocked the whole fucking punk scene who didn’t know what the fuck to make of us. We didn’t look like anybody. We didn’t sound like anybody. We were angry, pissed-off and we dressed all in fucking black and we were always getting into fights and shitloads of fucking trouble every night. That’s pretty much what punk was back then, getting fucked up and fucking people up. At least in New York City, it was."
