Belphegor and Origin at Reggies Rock Club
I always liked Belphegor since the first time I saw them live. So having them appear on a really solid tour package with Origin and Abigail Williams was a show which I absolutely had to see. It was my first time seeing them since I caught them with Keep of Kallessin back in 2011 as I spent 2013-2015 outside of the metal scene, first asphyxiating in absolute misery before returning to school to earn a degree.
The majority of the bands playing were black metal and while I could have worn a shirt for Immortal, Melechesh or Primordial, I chose to wear my Converge shirt. Nothing sticks it to the Wicker Park-dwelling beards and flannel crowd more than proudly wearing the shirt of the band responsible for the 2000s metalcore boom to a black metal show. I proudly felt like Homer Simpson wearing a Rastafarian hat at Lollapalooza.
Opeth Streaming "Will O The Wisp"
Today Opeth releases another track from upcoming album "Sorceress," due out on September 30th via the band’s own Nuclear Blast imprint label, Moderbolaget Records. Check out new song "Will O The Wisp" in the YouTube player below.
If you missed 'em, a series of in-studio clips has also come online. The latest one from guitarist Fredrik Akesson can be found here.
”The new album 'Sorceress' is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says front man Mikael Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. 'Sorceress' is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!?"

Sunday Old School: Sevendust
As you may have noticed by recent Sunday Old School columns focusing on the likes of Coal Chamber and Spineshank, nu metal, or rather bands lumped into that category, are now being covered in this feature. It was a strange time, as following grunge's almost complete removal of metal from mainstream popularity, save for the likes of Pantera, Sepultura and Fear Factory, it was another brand of metal that removed it. The problem was, many metal fans hated what they saw as the bastardising of their genre. There were however, several bands which earned respect for their clear talent and songwriting abilities, including today's featured group, Sevendust.
Sevendust were formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1994 by bassist Vince Hornsby and drummer Morgan Rose, who christened their new project, Snake Nation prior to being joined by guitarist John Connolly. After recording a demo, which they felt was let down by a poor vocal performance, they began a search for a new singer, one which would lead them to Lajon Witherspoon, with the lineup being completed six months later when Clint Lowery joined as a second guitarist, at which point the band renamed themselves, Rumblefish, before changing it to Crawlspace and then finally settling on the moniker Sevendust after a band named Crawlspac sent them a letter demanding $2,500.
