Today Opeth releases another track from upcoming album "Sorceress," due out on September 30th via the band’s own Nuclear Blast imprint label, Moderbolaget Records. Check out new song "Will O The Wisp" in the YouTube player below.
If you missed 'em, a series of in-studio clips has also come online. The latest one from guitarist Fredrik Akesson can be found here.
”The new album 'Sorceress' is our 12th studio album since our beginnings in 1990,” says front man Mikael Åkerfeldt. “I find it difficult to understand that we’ve been going on for 26 years, let alone that we’ve made 12 records now, all of which I am very proud of. 'Sorceress' is no exception. I love this album, as does the whole band. I wrote the music during 5-6 months and we spent only 12 days recording it at Rockfield studios in Wales. I find that once again we’ve taken a step forward. Or sideways, Or backwards. Somewhere!?"
The full track listing for "Sorceress" is as follows:
1. Persephone
2. Sorceress (song streaming here)
3. The Wilde Flowers
4. Will O The Wisp
5. Chrysalis
6. Sorceress 2
7. The Seventh Sojourn
8. Strange Brew
9. A Fleeting Glance
10. Era
11. Persephone (Slight Return)

The snare sounds like it was tuned loose (maybe a half turn above wrinkled) maybe slightly tighter on the bottom head for decent snare response. The snare strand tension is probably just tight enough to maintain contact.
I'm guessing the batter head is an Evans Power Center. Other possible choices: Evans Hydraulic, EC2, or Onyx since Axe is endorsed by Evans and has stated a preference for the Power Center. However, there are pics of him with Remo Black dots during the Hertiage recordings, so all bets are off. I think his snare is a 14" x 6", if he stuck with one snare for the whole album.
The sound is similar to the snare sound on Sorceress, just with a softer touch.
I have limited experience with the recording side of things, so maybe someone else (Coldiem usually has some good input) can chime in on mics/eq/effects.

Oooooooo. I like this much more than the track "Sorceress." If the rest of the album is like this then this album will likely shape up to out perform their last two. PC had some great moments and was a good album (not great), but I think Opeth will continue to grow with their new sound and start producing epic prog albums.
