Pit Stories: Fan Devotion

This week's Pit Story comes courtesy of a Canadian metal band that's been flying under the radar for far too long.

Ottowa outfit Chariots Of The Gods shares a tale about a devoted fan who got more than a little knocked around in the pit at a release show, but decided to stick it out anyway.

The band recalls the story like this:

This particular pit story happened at the release show for our first record "Tides of War." The show was packed and the venue pretty near maximum capacity (350 to 400). During one of our songs, I can't remember which, a big circle pit starting forming and things got pretty wild in there. One of our fan/friends, who wears glasses, got knocked over in the pit and his glasses broke.

As he put his hands down to try and get back up he cut his palm open on the broken lenses. People got him up, he then went to the bathroom to clean up and patch it up as best he could, then came back out and stayed for the rest of the show; only after did he leave for the hospital to get sowed up. Pretty dedicated metal head right there in my opinion.

This isn't the first time we've heard stories of crazy fan devotion - what's the worst injury you've seen a metal head sustain and still hang out to finish the rest of the set?

Chariots Of The Gods also just released new album "Ages Unsung" last month, which can be heard in full via the YouTube playlist below. More...

Kuolemanlaakso Releases New Video

A music video for "My Last Words" taken from new Kuolemanlaakso album "M. Laakso - Vol. 1: The Gothic Tapes" is out now (check out our review here). Laakso himself comments:

"'My Last Words' is one of the most honest and personal songs that I've ever written. It's basically a pre-written message to my children; what I'd like to tell them them, when my time comes. Perhaps it will bring comfort in the time of grief someday. As long as there are dreams and memories, death is not the end.

"Nature and the symbolism of the biological cycle have always been key issues in the aesthetics of both Kuolemanlaakso and my solo album. This clip is almost meditative in its character. It's basically what someone might see with closed eyes while listening to the song."

The video was created by Jukka Uitto, Pete Voutilainen, and Nadi Hammouda. It was shot in Helsinki and Kuopio, amidst Laakso's childhood scenery. More...

Interview

Combichrist Discusses "This is Where Death Begins"

Combichrist started in Norway in the early ‘90s by Andy LaPlegua. He was enraptured by the ambiance found in industrial music. While techno bars are a common site in Europe now, LaPlegua’s hometown was unaccustomed to the hard beat at this time. Being such a small town, the musicians were part of a close-knit scene where he lent his time to various projects and genres. Metal was his main love and if it weren’t for a legendary black metal player, LaPlegua would have never known the dark sonic passageways of industrial music. This new discovery led to him trying something different, which alienated the metal scene but brought in new faces.

While LaPlegua disenchanted his metal scene when he formed Combichrist, now many of his early followers of Combichrist dispute his new-found direction. “This is Where Death Begins,” the group’s eighth studio full-length, shows the group stepping away from the synth-based electronica of their earlier period and donning a more metallic shell. This new-found direction has led to the most success of the band’s career. “This is Where Death Begins” is on pace to be his all-time best selling album. This was done without feeling trapped by the approval of his fans. The band recently played in front of a massive crowd at Knotfest and has been on tour with Cavalera Conspiracy. With a six-man live group, including two drummers and two guitarists, Combichrist puts on an energetic show few can duplicate.

On the off days of the Cavalera tour, Combichrist heads to smaller cities to headline their own shows. These concerts give their fans much meatier performances, including a set list culled from throughout their career plus many current favorites. Before they took the stage in Austin, Texas, Andy LaPlegua spoke with me about their new album and tour. More...

To The Wind Streams New Album

Seattle’s hardcore/metal band To The Wind will release new album "The Brighter View" on Friday, and in anticipation just debuted a stream of the entire record for fans today.

The new album is due out on October 7th from Pure Noise Records and can be pre-ordered here. To The Wind's Tanner Murphy comments:

"Much like our prior releases, we don't really filter anything in this record. I try to be 100% genuine in my lyrics regardless of the topic, and that hasn't changed. Don't let the album title deceive you. We're not putting this out to say that our views on life have gotten 'brighter,' or that this is our most positive record. It's just about TRYING to find a positive light in life even when it can seem impossible sometimes.

"I feel like we took a similar route as our previous records while writing this album, but we are all a little bit older now. I think our writing has naturally matured the longer this band has been around. With each release we try to progress and try new things. But, we always try to keep our core sound and be real to those listening. I think this is our most complete album instrumentally, vocally, and lyrically."

New album "The Brighter View" was produced by Comeback Kid vocalist/guitarist Andrew Neufeld and To The Wind kicks off a tour in support of the new record on Friday with labelmates Vanna. More...

Oni Releases "Barn Burner" Lyric Clip

Technical progressive metal band Oni has announced the release of debut scorcher "Ironshore," due out Black Friday, November 25th via Blacklight Media/Metal Blade Records.

After turning heads with first single "Eternal Recurrence," the band is following with new track "Barn Burner," which you can hear below. "Barn Burner" is presented in lyric video form, directed by Wovenwar/ex-As I Lay Dying guitarist Nick Hipa.

Bassist Chase Bryant discusses the inspiration behind the track: "Our front-man, Jake Oni, and I originally discussed including a 'get in the pit and die' track on the album, and 'Barn Burner' is that track. Musically, we went for something fast, heavy, and based around dream-like, mysterious tones. The track is inspired by a dream I had about parallel universes - I could see them all lined up like ripples in the water. A girl walked between the ripples and changed her surroundings at will. After having that vivid dream and working on conceptualizing it with Jake, the lyrics for 'Barn Burner' just poured themselves onto the page."

1. Barn Burner
2. Eternal Recurrence
3. The Only Cure (featuring Randy Blythe of Lamb of God)
4. The Science
5. Spawn and Feed
6. Chasing Ecstasy

Anciients Streaming Full New Album

Vancouver's Anciients is now streaming all of forthcoming album "Voice of the Void" in the YouTube playlist available below. Regarding the album, guitarist/vocalist Kenneth Cook comments:

"This record includes some of our heaviest music, and darkest themes to date. We traveled a bit further from some of the classic rock elements that were throughout our previous record , and focused a bit more on the metal aspects of our sound this time around. I can speak for all of us when I say this record is something we are very stoked on, and we couldn't be happier with how the final product turned out. I think we have upped the ante in a lot of ways when compared to Heart of Oak. The overall sound quality and recording of 'Voice of the Void' turned out amazing ! I think this record compliments our previous work quite well. We can't wait to hit the road and share this new material with our fans in a live setting."

Guitarist Chris Dyck continues: "'Voice of the Void' for me, is the logical progression musically and lyrically from Heart of Oak. It goes further in each direction we explored on the debut; heavy parts are heavier, fast parts are faster and so forth. In terms of theme/lyrics. this record is far more cynical and less hopeful than the debut. It metaphorically addresses some life choices/paths etc and what we see happening in the world. Its a darker and more pissed off album. I feel like we have hit our stride and I'm stoked as hell to get on the road and play these songs live!" More...

Shark Infested Daughters Announces New Tour

Calgary, AB metalcore six piece Shark Infested Daughters just announce the band will be performing dates in British Columbia and Alberta as part of a tour in support of forthcoming album "These Tides, Our Tombs," due out on November 11th.

The tour will kick off in Vancouver, BC on November 3rd and end in Grande Prairie, AB on November 13th with select dates supported by Nanaimo, BC's The Body Politic and Edmonton, AB's Corvus The Crow (dates listed below).

"These Tides, Our Tombs" features 10 assaulting tracks plus a bonus acoustic version of previous single "Tidebringer." After an entire year of demos and writing, Shark Infested Daughters worked with producer Rob Kukla (Arbitrator) to establish the album tracks and had mixing plus mastering done by Sacha Laskow (Every Hour Kills).

The band comments on the release: "'These Tides, Our Tombs' is a project that has been in the works for the last two years. Our entire goal was to create an album that challenged all of us musically plus would break down the genre walls placed upon us by our previous releases. On a lyrical standpoint, the album is an emotional roller coaster touching on subjects such as loss, suicide and depression. 'These Tides' symbolizes the negativity that surrounds us; 'Our Tombs' symbolizes how we choose to deal with them. It's either sink or swim. We hope the fans will feel the same raw emotion we put into writing this record. More...
