Craig Locicero Comments On Chris Cornell's Passing
Last night news broke that Chris Cornell (Soundgarden, Audioslave) had passed away, with news arriving this morning that the cause of death was an apparent suicide. Musicians from across the genre spectrum have expressed their condolences or extreme surprise, with Forbidden's Craig Locicero issuing this lengthy statement:
"When Alice told me that Chris Cornell was found dead, it was around midnight last night. After looking around I saw it was evidently true. Shocking and somehow not shocking, but most certainly dauntingly sad for millions of us and especially his loved ones and bandmates. When I awoke this morning it still didn't seem real, but as I opened up Instagram, every post was a Cornell picture with heartfelt words attached to them. It hit me hard in that moment. It's hitting me right now.
"In 1989 Forbidden went to the Foundations Forum in L.A. to do the schmooze thing with hundreds of other metal bands. Hair metal, thrash metal, prog metal, heavy metal...metal metal. It was like what the NAMM show has turned into these days, but worse. Or better... I dunno...
Everybody got a gift bag the first day. I didn't even sift through mine until I got home. At that time I went back to living at my parents house in Fremont for a short stay. I opened up my gift bag and found a bunch of unmemorable crap and one cassette that looked interesting to me. Didn't fit in the cheese bag. That cassette was 'Loud Than Love' by Soundgarden.
"I remember putting it on and immediately feeling transformed into a different world. One far less ridged and more free than what music was turning into commercially, even in my thrash metal genre. A world that wasn't laid into perfect lines, but was splashed in colors and emotion. Less processed, more raw emotion and power. More...

"Blackhearts" Documentary Free For Iranian Viewers
The producers of the award-winning documentary "Blackhearts" have had a goal to release the film in Iran since early in development, and as news of the documentary started to spread online, Iranian main character Sina began receiving messages from aspiring young metalheads finding inspiration in his story, themselves wishing to play the music they love without fear of consequences.
Preparing for the DVD release, all kinds of approaches for distribution or screening possibilities in Iran were pursued, but no traditional solutions were found. Now a geoblocked minisite has been created where all Iranians can watch the full documentary for free, and the production company Gammaglimt has reached out to spread the link below the radar of the Iranian regime. If you're in Iran and want to view the film, send a message at Facebook here.
Sina comments: "I have received many inquiries from young musicians in Iran, both via email and through social media, who have read about me in connection with Blackhearts. In Iran, it is impossible to play black metal. It is impossible to release your music legally and concerts is also something you can forget. Through my story, they can see that it is possible!"
The story of Sina's oppression at the hands of the Iranian government questions the role of authority in dictating what defines art; on the other end lies Kaiadas, a government oppressor who is a member of Greece's neo-fascist political party The Golden Dawn by day and black metal musician by night. In the middle, we have Hector, a devoted Satanist and frontman for the Colombian black metal band Luciferian. All three of them exemplifying the global reach and cultural heritage of Norwegian black metal. Also featured in the film are Norwegian black metallers Keep Of Kalessin, Nocturno Culto from Darkthrone, Destructhor from Myrkskog/Zyklon/ex-Morbid Angel and Tjalve from Den Saakaldte/ex-1349. St. Elmo's Fire Recording First Album In 25 Years
After several delays and lineup changes, California based metal band St. Elmo's Fire has started recording the fifth studio album "Across the Nations," the first album since 1992. The new album features twelve tracks, one of which was originally written for the "Desperate Years" album in '92 but was never recorded.
The band issued its first four albums via Germany's Pure Steel/Karthago Records ("St. Elmo's Fire," "Warning From the Sky," "Powerdrive" and "Desperate Years") as limited edition numbered collectors CDs. The success of those reissues led to the band's new recording.
Guitarist, songwriter and founding member Jeff Jones started writing the new material for "Across the Nations" during the reissue process. "It was a real chore trying to write new songs while getting the original masters, liner notes, lyric sheets and everything else together for the reissues.”
Lineup changes also made getting the new album off the ground difficult. Jones decided to quit Bay Area thrash band Trauma because of time and creative constraints. Original St. Elmo's Fire drummer Kris Gustofson was replaced by Freakshow drummer Tom Frost. Bassist Chris Stringari of Ikki Crane and Cemetary was added as well. Vocalist Kevin Brady completes the new lineup.
Jones also added: ”This album was partially crowd funded. We thought that giving our fans a chance to help us make this record would be a win-win kind of thing. The support was overwhelming." The new album is scheduled for a 2017 release. More information is expected soon.

Leprous Introduces New Album "Malina"
Norwegian progressive act Leprous is pleased to announce the much-anticipated new fifth studio album "Malina," which is set to release on the August 25th via InsideOut Music. The album is the follow-up to the acclaimed record "The Congregation." To coincide with the album's release, the band will embark on an extensive European tour with special guests, Iceland's Agent Fresco, plus Australia's AlithiA and fellow Norwegian act Astrosaur.
Following a hugely successful EU tour as support to label-mates Devin Townsend Project, the band started the recording of the follow-up to 2015's "The Congregation." Front-man and keyboard player Einar Solberg comments: "This album is the perfect example of how you can start with a vision and end up with a result that has nothing to do with the original idea. The writing of the album started out with the idea to perfect the sound and working method we began with on 'The Congregation'. While the writing process was actually pretty similar (30 sketches, elimination process etc etc) we gradually started noticing stuff with the sound and the songwriting on the previous album that we wanted to sound different. Gradually we realized what needed to be done. This album needs to sound more alive, more organic and more dynamic." More...
