Pit Stories: Three Day Ear Ringing
Happy Tuesday my fellow heavy music lovers!
Today we've got a Pit Story that many of our regulars can relate to: getting older but still wanting to throw down at the front of the pit. What used to involve a couple of shots to rally and then going to work at 6 AM now involves days of recovery.
This week's Pit Story comes courtesy of guitarist and vocalist Tyson Wiebe of Lethbridge noise rock / punk duo Cope, who recalls the tale like this:
As I get older I somehow forget that my body/ears are not built for the pit anymore. The punishment I shrugged off as a teen and drank away in my early twenties now lingers well past what should be normal. I know better, yet I can still be found where the bodies are tightest and the music is loudest.
The most recent one came from a trip to Missoula to see my personal guitar hero Dean Ween. People always seem to write off Ween as a joke band, but they’ve always been dead serious to me. Mickey Melchiondo (aka Dean Ween, aka Deaner, aka Mickey Moist, etc.) is a shredder and I couldn’t wait to watch him and maybe steal some of his essence, so when we pulled into town for the show there was no doubt where we were going to stand: front stage, stage left. Where he has stood for the past 33 years as the other half of Ween.
We held our ground in that spot through the Meat Puppets (who still shred) and waited and waited. When the band came out and the first notes from his guitar rang out we realized we had made a huge, huge mistake. I have heard loud before, but this was deafening. His Fender Super-Sonic stack was cranked and pointing right at us. Plus, we were jammed up right by a monitor that was flipped to face the crowd for some reason. We knew we had to do something, so we started pushing the monitor further right. Security instantly came back and pushed it to its original position.
Then a cat-and-mouse game started.
When they would look away, we’d inch it further right, hoping they wouldn’t notice. They would notice eventually and push it back. We’d wait and move it over by inches again. We left the show with our ears ringing for three days afterward.
Worth it.

Watch A Truly Cringe Worthy Festival Set
Get ready to cringe watching a hilarious train wreck of a festival opener as Azazel kicks off the Steelfest Open Air... to less than inspiring results.
In the clip below, filmed by Youtuber kirrneh, the band's guitarist starts in a seated position, the vocalist literally drinks the entire set, and for awhile the group sort of just mills around on stage talking to each other in the middle of a song.
Steelfest took place in Hyvinkää, Finland on May 19th, 2017. The video uploader hilariously notes: "Azazel opened the festival. Apparently the artists had also opened their bottles before that."

EyeHateGod Kicking Off Spring Tour
New Orleans' favorite amplification dealers from EyeHateGod will return to the stage next week on a near-two week run of live dates.
Slated to commence on May 25th in Hattiesburg, Mississippi and crumble eleven cities through June 4th, the band's latest trek serves as fron tman Mike IX Williams' first official tour since his liver transplant this past December. The band will be performing as a four piece for this run with guitarist Brian Patton sitting these dates out in preparation for the birth of his second child.
Comments Williams: "The realities of life, society, and inhumanity rear their ugly heads once again as do New Orleans' own EyeHateGod. True underground outcast preachers of the End Time message and dealers of back alley filth and feedback, EyeHateGod returns to the road to dig a proverbial grave for the power-hungry enemies of the people." Bruce Corbitt Admitted To Hospital
After undergoing heart surgery back in 2015, there have been more health issues lately for Bruce Corbitt (Warbeast / Rigor Mortis).
Bruce has been posting a series of updates from the emergency room via Facebook since late last night, and has now issued the following update about the apparent cause of his bleeding issue:
"Worst news possible. I have an esophageal tumor. In most cases, esophageal cancer is a treatable disease, but it is rarely curable.
"The overall 5-year survival rate in patients amenable to definitive treatment ranges from 5% to 30%. The occasional patient with very early disease has a better chance of survival.
"They're about to test if already cancerous. I'm going to be here for a long time. Devastated! I'm doomed and my time is short. Love y'all!" More...

Execration Returns With New Album
On July 14th, Norwegian death metal crew Execration will release new album, "Return To The Void," via Metal Blade Records. Today, the band has launched the title track as the first single/video - check it out below.
"Coming off of two double 12" vinyl albums, the first clear goal for writing 'Return To The Void' was to deliver the same kind of dynamic and shifting song-writing in a more condensed to-the-point package," comments Execration.
The band goes on to say, "As with the previous two albums, we wanted to capture the feel of a live performance, so all the basic tracks (drums, guitars, bass) were recorded live in our rehearsal studio in Oslo over the course of a weekend. Vocals, synths, and various effects where recorded the following weeks with assistance from Andreas Tylden (One Tail, One Head / Altaar). The album was then mixed and mastered by Tom Kvalsvoll of Kvalsonic Labs."
Thematically, the album takes off into outer space, the world of dreams, and philosophic musings on time and space. The album's seven songs and two instrumental tracks are permeated with the mysteries of the universe, both in lyrical content and concept, and in the music itself. This theme is further brought to life by the magnificent art of Zbigniew M. Bielak that adorns the front cover. More...
