In This Moment Album Certified Gold

In This Moment's 2012 album "Blood" was officially RIAA certified gold, as having moved 500,000 units specifically in the United States, as of May 10th, 2017. This accomplishment also marks Century Media Records' first gold record in company history.

Chris Howorth (guitars) states: "Maria and I are grateful beyond words for this wonderful achievement and it's an incredible feeling to know so many people appreciate the music on this album. Right before we went in to create the 'Blood' album two of our original band members and our manager quit on us (they didn't believe) and it left us with a do or die situation.

"We chose to let go of all fear and make the album we've always wanted. Huge thanks to Robert Kampf and Don Robertson at Century Media, Kevin Churko for never doubting us, Bill McGathy for stepping in at the perfect time, our band members for bringing it to life onstage and our fans for supporting us thru everything! We couldn't have done this without you! Much love!"

Don Robertson (Century Media President) further adds: "When Chris and Maria played us the first two demos for the album, I knew it was going to be the special and ground breaking record that they were determined to make. We are very proud to have the company's first certified gold record to be from our friends in In This Moment. Congrats to them for persevering and bringing the vision to life!" More...

Yeghikian Inks Deal With Urban Yeti

Los Angeles band Yeghikian has just signed a worldwide deal with Urban Yeti Records. Front man Alexy Yeghikian commented on the signing:

"It feels great to find a home for our music that really believes in us. We are not trying to fit into a specific mold when it comes to any kind of sub-genre classification of metal. This band is about having a good time and giving an energetic performance."

Urban Yeti founder Mike Gevorgian had this to say: "This was a deal that just made sense to me from the beginning. I can ramble on about how talented they are and say the same stuff you normally hear when a label announces a new signing. It's not always easy working with talented people, egos and outside influence can get in the way.

"I've known Alexy since we were both in high school. We have had a bond before the band came into play so there's a level of trust that already exists between us. When I met the rest of his band and saw them perform I could tell this was a deal that needed to be made. I couldn't be happier to have Yeghikian as a part of the family." More...

Old Iron Signs With Good To Die

Good to Die Records is excited to announce newest signing: Seattle doomsayers Old Iron. The label will release Old Iron's second full-length album, "Lupus Metallorum," on August 18th, and the group will respond by playing as many shows as possible at home and throughout the U.S including Northwest Terror Fest.

Engineered and produced by Matt Bayles (Mastodon, ISIS, The Sword) at Red Room Studios in Seattle WA, "Lupus Metallorum" captures the full weight of a band whose megalithic sound had previously best been experienced live and in the flesh. Good To Die Records comments:

"The tritone — also known as 'the Devil’s interval' — is a pairing of notes that are three whole steps apart. It’s simply an interval between two frequencies, but for whatever reason, the human brain translates that pairing as sounding evil. Western composers avoided the note combination for centuries. The church frowned upon its use. It’s strange that two notes could elicit such negative reactions. But this is part of the magic of music — that certain combinations of frequencies trigger specific human emotions. More...

Crypt Rot Posts "Pit Of Morbidity"

Ohio-based death cult Crypt Rot just released a new video for "Pit Of Morbidity," which hails from the band's freshly exhumed "Embryonic Devils" debut.

Formed in 2016 by a crew of scene veterans including several current/former members of Homewrecker, Crypt Rot enlisted Bill Korecky at the Mars Compound for the recording of "Embryonic Devils."

Lead vocalist / guitarist Ryan Sposito commetns: "The video was filmed in Ashtabula, Ohio, the indoor scenes filmed above the Harbor Perk Coffeehouse, and the outdoor scenes were filmed at bassist Aaron Schwarz's property. Director Jim Roberts went to school with me and since graduation he has released many B Horror movies. It felt like the perfect opportunity to collaborate.

"My friend Miles Ackroyd went to George A. Romero's school for makeup and special effects. Fortunately, I knew a lot of friends who could help make the video; the total budget was $600. I wrote the song lyrically after my brother passed away from brain cancer. So essentially, the plot is me as 'Father Flesh' guiding the younger version of myself through the horrors to come as a metaphorical way to express my extreme suffering in loss." More...

Tengger Cavalry Posts "Cursed"

Global Music Award-winning nomadic folk metal group Tengger Cavalry has already released two new singles from upcoming album, "Die On My Ride," which is due out June 2nd via M-Theory Audio.

Those previous tracks, entitled "Die On My Ride" and "Ashley," portray two very different sides of the band, both musically and conceptually.

Today, Tengger Cavalry is introducing a third track into the mix. "Cursed" is a more introspective look at breaking down personal barriers risen by oneself and others. Check it out below.

"'Cursed' is about breaking barriers," says frontman Nature G. "Society has always put up different mental and physical barriers barring individuals just trying to achieve their dreams. You are too short, you are minority, you are a female not a man, you are from somewhere else, you don't look good enough.

"All these disadvantages that we think we are born with, are like a curse to us. We are cursed for believing these barriers, aren't we? No, we are not. We need to break this barrier of belief. We need to strike it and claim who we are supposed to be. Cursed, or rise above the curse." More...

The Cold Stares Posts "Head Bent"

"Head Bent" is the forthcoming new full-length album from Nashville duo The Cold Stares. Set for release June 16th via Small Stone Recordings, the eleven-track "Head Bent" was produced and mixed by the band with Greg Pearce and mastered by Chris Goosman.

In advance of its release, today the record's title track comes online and can be heard below. Notes frontman Chris Tapp, "I was listening to a bit of Queen and always loved 'Tie Your Mother Down,' so I started writing with that in mind. The music just sounds like bikes to me. I've always had hot rods and bikes and wanted to do a tribute song to all the good people in those communities.

"A big part of my cancer recovery was getting my mind right, and just riding; there's nothing like the focus and peace it brings. The bike and gear head community is so much about family and respect, and just love for the machine. 'Head Bent' is that feeling of 80mph wind twisting your neck down the highway." More...

Byzantine Releases New Video

On July 28th, Byzantine will release new album, "The Cicada Tree," via Metal Blade Records. For a first preview, a new video for the single "New Ways to Bear Witness" (featuring a cameo by Skeletonwitch's Dustin Boltjes, as well as ex-Byzantine drummer Matt Wolfe) has been launched online.

Directed and edited by Holly Siders, the filming of "New Ways to Bear Witness" resulted in Chris "OJ" Ojeda (vocals, rhythm guitar) suffering a concussion. OJ comments about the experience:

"So, we came up with an idea of having our old drummer do a cameo appearance in the music video. Matt Wolfe left the band right before we signed with Metal Blade and had occupied the drum seat for the last 12 years. We felt it was a perfect opportunity to let fans know that we still love Matt and he's still welcome and important to our band. What's the best way to have an ousted band member make a cameo? To hit me with a vehicle, of course!

"We set up the scene and did about 5 or 6 takes of Wolfe hitting me with the vehicle and me rolling off the vehicle. I didn't know until we wrapped shooting the next day that something was wrong and had a very hard time driving home. I contacted an ER doctor friend of mine who told me I needed to come see him ASAP. After a CT Scan and an EKG, he let me know I had a standard sports type concussion from repeatedly hitting my head during the video shoot. I got 3 days off work and a cool story out of it! Rock!" Der Weg Einer Freiheit Posts New Song

"We are extremely stoked to finally be able to present the first new track taken from our upcoming album 'Finisterre'. In comparison to the quite complex and progressive instrumental 'Skepsis Part I', the now premiered 'Skepsis Part II' is a more straight forward composition, in which epic melodies are aggressively building up until the doomy grand finale.

"Ultimately, we consider both parts of 'Skepsis' to be connected and forming one extensive musical piece. This lyric video also provides an impression and closer look at the extensive album artwork, which was created by our friend Max Löffler once again. Enjoy!"

Origin Posts Studio Video

In anticipation of upcoming new album "Unparalleled Universe," iconic U.S. death metal crew Origin recorded a series of in-studio videos. The first video, featuring guitarist and founding member Paul Ryan, is now available for viewing below.

"Unparalleled Universe" will be released on June 30th via Agonia Records (Europe / ROW) and Nuclear Blast Records (North America). Earlier the band revealed the first single, "Accident And Error," in the form of a 360 degree lyric video available here.

"It feels like an Origin album, but it’s unparalleled to what you might expect if you haven’t heard us for 10 or 15 years" says Ryan. "To me, it’s a true reflection of ourselves. I compare it to an action movie. Our earlier material is filled with action from beginning to end. Now, the idea is to add a little more depth and dynamics. You could say there are some twists in the plot musically."

The album was recorded and mixed at Chapman Studios in February 2017 alongside longtime collaborator and engineer Robert Rebeck. Origin emerged with ten new songs including a cover of Brujeria's "Revolución" that were mastered in March 2017 by Colin Marston at Menegroth - The Thousand Caves and wrapped in a cover prepared by Filip Ivanovic. Hadal Reveals A "Painful Shadow" Video Clip

Italian death/doom metal band Hadal is proud to announce the release of the new official video for the title track of the latest album "Painful Shadow," which is available now via Sliptrick Records.

In the bands own words; “We tried to recreate the essence of the album, using no colors but only black and white, as a reminder of the acoustic guitars opposed to the distorted ones and of the clean vocals opposed to the growls. A lonely soldier is facing an unfair war, surrounded by the distressing presence of a silent shadow that hangs over him. Particular attention has been paid to the photography and the film making technique. We didn’t want to use special effects or any computer graphics. Our intention was to keep it as real and as cruel as reality is.”

Textures Announces Break Up And Farewell Dates

Another sad day in the history of heavy music: Dutch polyrhythmic metallers Textures has called it quits. The band's full statement reads:

"Ladies and gentlemen, there is no easy way to say this, so here it is: Textures comes to an end.

"Personal motives have led to this decision and it has not been made in haste. These personal reasons made it harder to be the productive band Textures always has been in the past and which this band needs to be. Without this dedication Textures would merely be a shell of what it used to be.

"Break-ups are never easy and always bring difficulties. Unfortunately we have to announce that our anticipated 6th album ‘Genotype’ will not be released and so there will be no double album. At least not for the coming years...

"The breakup of Textures doesn't mean that there is any hardship within the band. We still have a strong connection with current and former members and this decision won't lead to any tensions whatsoever. Furthermore the individual band members will continue to make music and pursue new musical endeavours. Keep your eyes and ears open...

"Thanks to all the friends, fellow musicians and other colleagues we have had the pleasure to meet along the way. And of course special thanks to all the fans who have supported us throughout the years. It is your dedication, appreciation and continued presence at our shows all over the world that made this journey one to remember for a lifetime.

"We hope to see you all very soon on our farewell tour.

Shining’s Portland Show Cancelled

The Tonic Lounge (Portland, Oregon) has cancelled today’s (May 17th) Shining show, due to vocalist Niklas Kvarforth's alleged behavior at a bar and show a few nights prior.

States the Tonic Lounge:

"Tonic Lounge has decided to cancel the Shining show that was scheduled for this Wednesday, May 17th. All tickets will be refunded.

"We regret having not researched this band more before approving their show. After booking them, it was brought to our attention that Shining’s singer has done and said many things that could be considered offensive, dangerous, or destructive. While we were learning about and considering these issues, the list continued to grow, including a recent report that the he may have been involved in the drugging of someone’s drink.

"This morning we received a call from a trusted friend in Boise Idaho, detailing the events that took place while Shining were there on Sunday. We were told that the singer of Shining went to the local punk bar Mulligans before their concert, and was groping women and threatening to stab employees, and had to be removed. More...

Read The Full First Chapter Of "Light Dawning"

Update: the second chapter has also come online and can be read over here.

Following previous sci-fi novella “Empty” from 2016, Ty Arthur (Metalunderground.com's very own xFiruath) returns with new full-length horror novel “Light Dawning."

Pivoting away from the emptiness of space, the book dives headlong into the waters of fantasy, but with a seriously grimdark twist.

This next foray into the bleaker corners of human existence is officially slated for release on Friday, May 26th, 2017. Kindle digital pre-orders are now online here, with physical editions available here.

Once known as the City on the Hill and revered far and wide for its independence and boundless opportunity, Cestia has become home only to the damned. Surviving under the brutal occupation of a southern empire for three long years, the oppressed populace has lost hope of liberation, turning instead towards an increasingly desperate rebellion willing to commit any atrocity for a chance at freedom.

As total war approaches, four lost souls trapped behind Cestia's walls are on a collision course with fate, destined to either save the city or see it utterly destroyed while calling on forces beyond mankind's comprehension. For good or ill, the light of a new day is about to dawn.

Today we're introducing you to one of those main characters: Myrr, a man on the run since coming across something beyond his comprehension that is desperately sought by the Knights of the Black Gauntlet. Check out an exclusive sneak peak of the full opening chapter of "Light Dawning" below.

"Light Dawning" was inspired by heavy metal of all stripes, from avant-garde black metal to occult rock, with the Myrr segments of the book in particular drawing on tracks from the Code album "Mut" and Shining release "IX - IX - Everyone, Everything, Everywhere, Ends." If you'd like to read the chapter as it was written and intended to be experienced, a playlist of songs fueling the writing sessions can be heard below that match the themes and tone of the book's opening section.
