Pit Stories: Tanked By A Smile

The ranks of our Tuesday Pit Stories ever grows longer, with another foray into the dank depths of metal shows arriving today.

This week we've got vocalist / bassist Joshua Cayer from doom metal trio Longhouse, sharing his memory of the band's first show, which didn't quite go off as expected.

Our musician readers can probably identify with Cayer's nervousness, which featured one song tanked by nothing less than the smile from a pretty lady in a sea of sweaty, beer drinking dudes:

I don't think we have played enough to have any extravagant tales from the pit, but I can share a story about our very first show. I want to firstly fess up by stating that I get extremely nervous before each and every show. Not puke-nervous, but definitely queasy and tense-nervous.

So, we decided to start our set with one of our more complex songs, "Earth from Water." For us, "more complex" isn't saying a lot, but because I was so tense my fingers didn't want to work the way they're supposed to, so a simple root-fifth-seventh arpeggio felt like I was trying to play an Animals As Leaders tune! Now, let's add in poor stage lighting, and a drummer who was likely equally as nervous and kicked in at an extra 20-30 bpm's higher than we should've been. I'll say that I'm glad not too many people were there to see it. Luckily we managed to settle in to the next song, and had the growing crowd headbanging along with us by the end.

There was also another stand-out moment from that show: during one of our favourites, "Gehenna Gate," my eye caught glimpse of an exceptionally pretty lady in the crowd. She kind of really stood out in a room full of bearded, beer-slogging dudes. Now, don't tell my wife this, but just as I was about to deliver another line of hellish doom screams I saw her smile, and it actually caused me to forget the lyric, and almost stop playing my bass! It's a good thing that you can't typically understand what the heck U'm saying anyways, and I managed to recover. All in all, our first was a pretty fun show and we were pretty happy with getting that under our belt.

Below you can check out the track "No Name, No Marker" from Longhouse's sophomore album, "II: Vanishing," which was released via Bandcamp on April 14th, 2017. You can follow the latest on this Ottawa-based doom outfit via Facebook here. More...

In a new documentary, directed by Matthew Mixon and titled “Yesterday Was Everything,” the band members takes viewers on an intimate journey of reconciliation as they find healing in the present by confronting the demons of the past. The documentary will be available on June 30th at iTunes, Google Play and Amazon.

Tribulation Announces Lineup Change, New Album

With the release of “The Children Of The Night” in April 2015 (reviewed here), Sweden’s Tribulation has made a massive impact on the worldwide metal scene. After excessive touring in North America and Europe, the group took a well-deserved break not only to recover from the intense album campaign, but also to focus on what lies ahead: a change of drummer and a new album.

Tribulation published the following statement about the departure of drummer Jakob Ljungberg, who had been with the group since the album “The Formulas Of Death:"

“As the summer in the year of their lord 2017 draws near and the world in the north is again fully starting to wake from its slumber we, on the other hand, are forced to face an inevitable end in the departure of our drummer Jakob Ljungberg who has decided to leave the band. We have spent the last five years together through pain to heaven, in chaos to bliss!

"It’s been such a strange, wonderful, tiring and inspiring time and we would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for making this time the most important in the history of the band. We surely couldn’t have done it without you. We were like brothers even before the time of Tribulation and we certainly will be in the time after! Make sure to check out Jakob’s unique and most excellent band Second Sun where he sings and plays guitar!”

Jakob Ljungberg also commented as follows: “It is with a heavy heart that I leave Tribulation. These last years have been among the best in my life, but they wore me out and now I have to continue life on different paths. Thanks to everyone involved - you made this journey spectacular, thanks to everyone that came up and said hi - it meant the world to me, thanks to everyone who believed in me - you made me believe in myself. Jonathan, Adam and Johannes: I love you. 'The end of nights we tried to die - this is the end.'” More...

Apothesary Premieres New Lyric Video

Apothesary is gearing up to drop sophomore effort "Accept Loss Forever" via rising metal force M-Theory Audio on July 7th.

Ahead of that impending summer release date, today the band has teamed up with us to exclusively premiere a new lyric video for "Tempest (Even Tide)." The clip was created by Tsunami Films and features a guest guitar solo by Bill Hudson (U.D.O., I Am Morbid, Trans-Siberian Orchestra) - check it out below!

Guitarist Clayton Cagle comments on the new video:

"Musically, parts of 'Tempest' date as far back as 2010. Some of those riffs (albeit modified) are actually some of the earliest material I had ever written - which is special to me to reflect on. It was also a chance for Greg and I to write and arrange together; bouncing ideas off of each other in a music composing program. He and I always seem to sync up when we talk about our goals and opinions. And I have always, ALWAYS wanted a giant triplet breakdown with an ominous, tremolo-picked lead.

"Lyrically, this was the last song written for the record. At the time... I was experiencing some things that I didn't know how to handle. There were a lot of emotions that I couldn't make sense of. And because of the way the previous year of my life had unraveled, I was already in a dangerous place.

"I remember sitting in my bed one night, alone, with the substance that I was convinced was the only thing helping me (the same substance later convinced me that I was about to die, but that's another story). I was miserable to the point that I hadn't written anything in weeks but I knew I needed to do something to release that pressure. So I forced myself to pick up my notebook and just started writing down thoughts. The arranged version of that desperate night became 'Tempest.'" More...
