We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week Swedish classic heavy metal band Astral Doors sends in a story about how keyboardist Jocke Roberg got his nickname:
This story takes place about 4 years ago in Southern Germany. We were the support act to the fantasy metal heroes Blind Guardian. I can't remember what town we played in, but that's not really important.
Some headline acts treat their support bands like crap and don't allow the technicians to do a proper job. How many gigs haven't you attended where the sound during the support band's actual show has been terrible? In this case however I must pay my tribute to Blind Guardian and their crew: they gave us everything they had, every night. For two months we were treated like kings and the technicians and the rest of the crew did an amazing job for us; night after night. We filmed all 37 gigs, so it's documented:) Thank you Guardians!
Ok, at the gig this particular night, our keyboard player, Jocke Roberg, had a really bad stomach. He was running in and out of the WC before the gig...doing his thing. The show started and everything went really well the first couple of songs. During song four or five, he felt it was time again. He started to sweat and the panic was close. When it was time for one of our most popular songs, “Evil is Forever”, where we use a recorded organ-hymn-kind-of-intro, which he normally plays along to; he took his chance: he ran behind stage, found a bucket and did the big one. We wondered where the hell he went and we were quite prepared to play the rest of the gig without keyboard. However: just as the recorded intro was finished, Mr. Roberg was back on stage. He completed the gig and everything went great. Ever since that day we call him Jocke Bucket!
Astral Doors' "Best of" collection, "Testament of Rock - The Best of Astral Doors" (reviewed here), will be released in North American on January 25th. You can hear the new single, "Victory," on the band's MySpace player.
Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

Album artwork was designed by Austrian artist Joachim Luetke.
Update: the editorial on Christian black metal is now available for viewing at this location.
The release of our editorial on Christian themes in black metal (which is a companion to this Unearthing the Metal Underground column on "unblack" metal bands) is drawing near, but in the mean time we'll be hearing from the bands themselves. While researching the bands in the scene, I sent out interview questions to musicians taking either a pro-Christian or an anti-Christian stance on the subject.
Below you can find the answers provided from guitarist Skaven from Nierty, who takes a middle of the road approach, defending Christian musicians who choose to play black metal, while he himself has not taste for religion. You can also check out Nierty's music at the band's official MySpace profile.
Our previous interviews on the anti-Christian side came from Plaag, Dehumanation, Frames, and Throne of Malediction. You can also read the answers from the pro-Christian musicians from Diamoth, Elgibbor, and Winter's Dawn. More...
3 Inches of Blood is gearing up for a tour as direct support for Eluveitie, but before that gets started the band will be making a quick pit stop into Shostroud Productions in Vancouver to record new cuts with Sho Murray (City of Fire) and Byron Stroud (Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory). One of the songs will be played live on the upcoming tour and will be making its way online soon. The band comments:
"It's a great time for us to be touring North America again. We haven't slugged it out in the US since Mayhem fest in summer 2010 and we're always happy to play to our loyal Canadian brethren. Everyone in the 3IOB camp have been eagerly anticipating this tour. We've never toured with a band like Eluveitie before. Their fan base is probably more similar to ours than most other bands we've toured with in the past. The Holy Grail guys are always fun to hang out with and we're curious to check out System Divide. "The Morrigan," the first single and opening track from Darkest Era's Metal Blade debut album, "The Last Caress Of Light," is now available for streaming through InvisibleOranges.com at this location.
Darkest Era's Ade Mulgrew notes why the song was chosen to be the first song released from the album: "The Morrigan is the opening track to the album. It's an energetic song that grabs you by the scruff of the neck from the first crashing chord and is full of powerful drumming, Thin Lizzy-esque guitar harmonies and an infectious, epic fist in the air chorus! It sets the tone well for the rest of the album."
"The Last Caress of Light" has been set for release on February 11th/14th, 2011 in Europe and February 15th in North America.
Before the Dawn has uploaded a second trailer for the band's upcoming album "Deathstar Rising," which can be viewed below. The new album is set to be released on February 25th, 2011 through Nuclear Blast Records.
Aborted has issued the following announcement about working on new material for an upcoming album:
"Everything has been going great so far with the preproduction of the upcoming album. We have about 13 skeletons of songs thus far. Drums are up next Mr Mike Heller (Malignancy, System Divide) will be engineering and assisting the drum pre-productions. Have to say we are all thrilled with the material and everyone has been chipping in, once we get a clear idea of the drums, vocals are next and we can start fine tuning and shaping the songs up to their final versions. Curious to see which tracks will make the final cut for the album. Needless to say this will probably be the most ruthless record the band has written period. We are going to tempos we have never been to before, some riffs are more tech than what we ever did, and everything still sounds catchy and crushing. Eran, Jb and Ken did a great job so far so now we just need to sit back and work out the kinks.
"Other good news is you will be seeing us this summer on some of the festivals, cannot say which yet but keep your eyes open for some announcements in the near future. If you live in Belgium/france/Holland/Denmark, check out the shows we have booked in april/may, might be in your area.
"Those of you who want to see our ugly mugs before that can go check out Sven touring the US with System Divide this February with Eluveitie and 3 inches of blood or Sorceron and Ken on tour with Abigail Williams this march with Rotting Christ and Melechesh. More updates coming on everything soon, keep your eyes open and spread the word!"
Former Emperor guitarist and solo artist Ihsahn has been nominated for a Norwegian grammy (Spellemannsprisen) for his latest album "After." Ihsahn also recently announced he has begun writing new material for an upcoming fourth solo album.
Additional details on the awards ceremony can be found at this location. Other metal albums nominated for the award are Enslaved - "Axioma ethica odini," Shining - "Blackjazz," and Solefald - "Norrøn livskunst."
Norway's Leprous has issued the following update about recording a new full-length album and follow up to 2009's "Tall Poppy Syndrome:"
"The recording of our new album is now in progress! Tobias did an unbelievably good job with recording all the drums in only two days. The first eight (out of ten) tracks he managed to do in only one day. We will of course post a blog entry about the drum recording, which took place in Juke Joint studio in Notodden. Next up is the guitars!"
You can also check out sample Leprous tracks available for streaming via the band's MySpace page.
Swede's Faster Katt has issued the following update about the recording of a new album:
"Heydiho! Reporting from the magical shores of the Mekong river, accompanied by an icecold BeerLao, I'm childishly happy and proud to announce the release of four sparkling fresh tunes, including a cover on Manowar's old jawbreaker 'Each dawn I die.' Actually, another one of the songs is also a 'cover', though only a lyrical one, a free translation of an old Swedish classic. See if you can figure it out, if not, ask your grandfather.
"This time, we've really worked together as a band and, in our humble opinion, improved especially on the vocal arrangements, which were put on tape in yours truly's wardrobe (see pictures here). Patric's new oversized vintage-style Gretch drumkit, as always recorded by Chrille in Studio Evil Grill, didn't hurt the sound either.
"Once again, Mattias has done an awesome mixingjob and Jonas whipped together some funky new artwork, and so we ceased the opportunity to pimp up the myspace layout, making two flies pregnant in one blow. Well, hell, enough blabbering, we hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did producing it! All the best!"
Illdisposed has announced that the band's new album "There Is Light (But It's Not For Me)," is set for release in Europe on March 25th through Massacre Records. The band has now also updated its tour schedule with the following European dates:

Descend has checked in with the following update about finishing the recording for the band's new album:
"Hey there. It's been a while since... but it's called winter break for a reason, huh? I think we've pretty much fulfilled our part of the deal now. Recorded the album and fixed the booklet and sent everything to the Supernova.
"I hope that next time I write, I will give you guys a sneak peak from the booklet and even better - a release date! But no promises though. We're soon there! Well, friends, watch out for manatees and I'll come back to you as soon as possible!"
Heavy metal act Manowar has issued the following statement about the band playing different sets for the upcoming live shows scheduled in Cleveland:

"Although we will play Battle Hymns from beginning to end on both nights, the set lists WILL be different. See you there!"
Powerwolf has checked in with the following brief update about beginning the drum recording for an upcoming new release:
"Matthew Greywolf back in the studio. We started tracking drums today, and it sounds way beyond our expectations. Even Attila paid a visit to sanctify this place, which should be a good omen for the work to be done during the next couple of days. Now getting high on holy water."
Powerwolf also recently confirmed an appearance at the Rockharz Open Air festival in Harz, Germany.
Montana based "mountain metal" band Throne of Malediction has posted a pre-master version of the song "The Only One" online, which is off the band's upcoming re-recorded version of the "Ceremonial Blood" album. You can check out "The Only One" at this location.

Los Angeles, California based heavy metal group White Wizzard has announced that they have entered the studio to record their brand new album, which is expected to be released this summer through Earache Records. Founding member Jon Leon said about the recording:
"Jon from the studio here... Gio kicked ass and laid down five drum tracks yesterday. The band expects to finish drums today and start bass tomorrow. In case you're interested in the album title, I wrote a song called 'Flying Tigers' as a tribute to the P-40 fighters of World War II. Everyone has seen those planes with the tiger shark painted on the side... It is a bit of a metal tribute to some old heroes... More news soon!!"
Danish power metal band Mercenary has revealed the front cover artwork for their forthcoming new studio album, "Metamorphosis." You can check it out below. Speaking on the album the band issued the following statement:
"We're very proud to be able to present our new cover for our upcoming album, Metamorphosis, as well as a brand new Mercenary logo!
"There's of course a lot of obvious (and indeed slightly cheesy) self-referential symbolism regarding the rebirth of the band in the cover artwork. But apart from that we felt that the motive of a phoenix was a really fitting expression of many of René's lyrical themes on the album, as they deal with personal and existential crisis, overcoming personal obstacles and how we can sometimes redefine ourselves in the proces of taking responsibility for altering the conditions of our very lives. This idea of personal freedom can be a very frightening thought for some, but it's actually a message of hope and optimism - we can always take control of our lives and free ourselves of inner or outer constraints, or at least take pride in the struggle to do so. (Okay, dropping all the intellectual pretense, we just liked the artwork because it was freaking bird on fire - how cool is that!?) More...

Additional details on the upcoming third album will bed announced as they are made available. In the mean time, you can check out Suicide Silence's music via the band's official MySpace profile.
After previously taking a look at "unblack" metal in an Unearthing the Metal Underground column, Metalunderground now has an editorial piece online here, which examines Christian themes in black metal.

Below you can find the answers to a series of interview questions from Somber of the band Plaag, who discusses the differences between "True Norwegian Black Metal" and Christian black metal bands.

Of Mice & Men has checked in from the pre-production recording process for its new album with producer Joey Sturgis (The Devil Wears Prada, Emmure). You can read the update below:
"Over the course of the last week, we’ve been doing demoing/pre-production with Joey Sturgis at The Foundation Studio. Some of you may not be familiar with this process so we’re gonna explain it to you. We basically get all of our ideas ‘out on the table’ (so to speak) and record all of our ideas as demo songs.
"We then break apart each song and put it back together piece by piece to test the strength of the song. We also did a lot of writing while we’ve been here, reformulating ideas as well as coming up with brand new ones to make every song just the way we want it to sound.
"So, reaching the final stages of this process, we’ve ended up with about 12/13 tracks. Starting today, we will track all of these songs (which means record the final draft of the song) and we will then go in and choose which ones we feel will make our album the most powerful and an overall best representation of OM&M "

Young Detroit death metal outfit As They Sleep just dropped its second full length record, "Dynasty," this past November on Solid State Records, and subsequently hit the road on a brief stateside tour to promote the album. Full of the band’s signature melodies and new era death metal heaviness, “Dynasty” is already generating a buzz in the death metal community. The Motor City five piece appears ready to leave the metalcore nuances of the band's debut, "Blacken The Sky," behind and make a strong move toward becoming the next youthful, breakout death metal group in the American scene and beyond. As They Sleep’s vocalist, Aaron Bridgewater, recently spoke to MetalUnderground.com about the band’s new CD, the band's musical style, and plans for the future. More...
Late last month, Metalunderground looked at the genre of music referred to as "unblack" metal, which injects explicitly Christian themes into the black metal style, in an entry of our Unearthing the Metal Underground column. We have now posted a companion article looking at how religion has influenced metal, and how Christianity in particular affects the frequently anti-religious black metal genre. During my time looking into the subject, I contacted a series of bands taking either a pro-Christian or anti-Christian stance to see what the musicians themselves had to say.
Previously we revealed the comments from Dehumanation, Throne of Malediction, and Frames, who took a generally anti-religious stance, as well as Elgibbor and Winter's Dawn on the opposite side. Our next interviewee is Syhirious of the Chile based Christian metal band Diamoth. Anyone interested in hearing Diamoth's music can find songs available for streaming via the band's MySpace profile. Westerville, Ohio deathcore act The Crimson Armada has announced its signing with Artery Recordings, the joint venture between The Artery Foundation and Razor & Tie. The signing comes in time for the band to record its next full length album "Conviction" with producer Brian Hood with a release planned for early summer. The band commented on the signing by saying:
"Artery is a strong name in this industry. We are excited to finally have people behind us who believe in what we stand for and are ready to back us and help us become the band we are meant to be. We are happy to call Artery our home."
Former Bury Your Dead vocalist Myke Terry has posted the following update online:
"After spending over three years with Bury Your Dead, becoming a family, and almost losing our lives together, I would think that we would all have each other's backs better than this. I never thought someone who hadn’t sweat, bled, or cried with us would have the power to dictate the inner workings of our band.
"I'd like to thank everyone that bought a Bury Your Dead CD, came to a show, or played with us for making the past few years of my life so amazing and I look forward to my future as a solo artist.
"I'm sure everyone who has ever chanted 'Bring back Bruso' is now stoked for his return."
The band, on hiatus since last April, recently began work on a new album, with the group's previous frontman, Mat Bruso, assuming lead vocal duties.
As I Lay Dying has announced that the band will headline California Metalfest V, set to take place March 19, 2011 at The Grove in Anaheim, California.
The festival billing is shaping up as follows:
AS I LAY DYING
WINDS OF PLAGUE
BORN OF OSIRIS
AFTER THE BURIAL
AS BLOOD RUNS BLACK
THE HUMAN ABSTRACT
THE GREAT COMMISSION
