We post metal news every day, throughout the day, covering thousands of metal bands including underground and unsigned bands. You are currently browsing the news archive, but you can also find news by band.
40 news articles posted on this day.
One of our Unearthing the Metal Underground columns last month covered three Christian leaning unblack metal bands, which is a touchy subject for many black metal purists who see the genre as exclusively the domain of the anti-Christian side. Wanting to look deeper into this divisive issue, I contacted bands with strong feelings in either direction and asked them a series of questions about the role religion can play in black metal. Those answers were incorporated into this editorial looking into unblack metal.
Finland's Renascent was featured in the original "Unearthing" column, and was easily the most impressive and musically aggressive band of the three groups examined. Vocalist / guitarist Eero Tertsunen of Renascent was the final musician to take part in the series of interviews, giving his thoughts on the ideology behind black metal. Eero's complete answers can be found after the jump.
If you are interested in hearing what the musicians on both sides of the debate had to say, you can find the answers from U.K. act Nierty here, which had a fairly neutral stance. The interviews with the more overtly anti-Christian black metal responses came from Ophidian Forest, Plaag, Dehumanation, Frames, and Throne of Malediction. The answers from the other pro-Christian black metal musicians came from Frost Like Ashes, Diamoth, Elgibbor, and Winter's Dawn. More...
Following a West Coast tour this past December, Pacific Northwest metal band Agalloch will be embarking on an East Coast run in support of the group's new album “Marrow Of The Spirit." Profound Lore Records recording artist Worm Ouroboros (also featuring Agalloch and Ludicra drummer Aesop Dekker) will serve as direct support on the tour.
Agalloch guitarist Don Anderson commented: "After seven years we are pleased to announce that we are returning to the East Coast for a series of performances with our good friends and fellow Profound Lore recording artists Worm Ouroboros. We’ll also be playing dates in both select areas of the South and Canada. The last time we played on the East Coast was in February of 2004 with The Gathering and Novembers Doom. Christan "unblack" metal act Frost Like Ashes was recently covered in our Unearthing the Metal Underground column, which took a brief look at the band's lyrical themes. As a companion to that article, an editorial is now online delving deeper into the controversial subject of Christianity in black metal. To get better perspective on the issue, I sent out a questionnaire to both black and unblack metal bands asking for their thoughts on the subject.
The answers provided by guitarist Sebat Frost from Frost Like Ashes can be found after the jump. The band's music can be heard through the Unearthing the Metal Underground column, or through the Frost Like Ashes MySpace page.
Anyone interested in reading the other interviews in the series can check out the answers from Ophidian Forest, Plaag, Dehumanation, Frames, and Throne of Malediction on the anti-Christian side, Diamoth, Elgibbor, and Winter's Dawn on the pro-Christian side, and Nierty on more neutral ground. Behemoth frontman Nergal, who has been receiving treatment for leukemia for more than six months, has left the hematology division of Uniwersyteckie Centrum Kliniczne (UCK) in Gdansk on Monday, January 17th. His release comes four weeks after he underwent a bone marrow transplant procedure. He commented:
"Hey! What's up! At last – one could say. After almost half a year of treatment in various hospitals, several cycles of chemotherapy, irradiation and a bone marrow transplant, I have been finally released home in a pretty fuckin' good condition. I'm feeling ok, taking the intensity of treatment under consideration. That was not an easy period of my life, but, as I envisioned, I left the hospital victorious. I never considered any other options, but anyway, there were rough moments too… At this point I must express my thanks to the people who made all of those downs fairly bearable. My parents – thank you. You deserve a monument for all your love and patience. Dorotka, thank you for your heroic attitude, love and support. I can't forget Doda's fans, who made a gigantic effort for me and other ill people. You rule! Absolutely fantastic Behemoth fans from all over the world were organizing various events to make people aware of what leukemia is. To all of you out there - my deepest respect! Thank you – the real heroes - Prof. Hellmann, Dr. Piekarska, Dr. Knopinska, Doc. Giebel, Prof. Holowiecki and all the nurses of the hematology division of the Medical Academy in Gdansk and the Oncology Clinic in Gliwice for all the professionalism and great hearts. My band mates for all the friendship and never-ending support. All my friends for sticking to me throughout the whole period of my illness. The list is too long to mention you all, but remember, you have special place in my heart."
Nergal will now go through a recovery, which will last for several months. During this time he will stay in his flat in one of the Gdansk's districts.
"Although the whole treatment went really good, as well as the bone marrow transplant and the post-transplant period, the next several months is the time when I must really take care of myself. Of course I will have plenty of time to recover, think about the strategy and my return to the stage – which approaches imminently (laughs). First of all however I must rebuild my physical condition… apart from that, I hunger for playing, I haven't been playing the guitar for a half of year now! Really much to catch up, but also a huge motivation and a desire to work again at the same time. This year will be a really important one for me and the band!"

Nervecell has issued the following announcement about the release of a new album:
"It is with great pleasure to announce that we have set 'PSYCHOGENOCIDE' as the title of our long-awaited new album, due for release late March 2011 in Europe through Lifeforce Records and Spellbind Records for the Middle East. The artwork has been a concept, which we have been working on for quite a while within the band and we are extremely proud of how it has turned out, perfectly matching the aggression and musical direction of the new album.
"PSYCHOGENOCIDE is scheduled to be mixed and mastered at Hertz Studios (Behemoth, Decapitated, Vader) in Warsaw, Poland by the Wieslawscy Bros. This will mark the follow-up to our first full-length 'Preaching Venom' which was released on October 26th 2009 on Lifeforce Records. The artwork was designed by Killustrations (Aborted, Severe Torture, Zyklon) and can be viewed here."
Mercenary has issued the following announcement about revealing the cover artwork for the band's new album:
"We're very proud to be able to present our new cover for our upcoming album 'Metamorphosis', as well as a brand new Mercenary-logo! There's of course a lot of obvious (and indeed slightly cheesy) self-referential symbolism regarding the rebirth of the band in the cover artwork. But apart from that we felt that the motive of a phoenix was a really fitting expression of many of René's lyrical themes on the album, as they deal with personal and existential crisis, overcoming personal obstacles and how we can sometimes redefine ourselves in the proces of taking responsibility for altering the conditions of our very lives. This idea of personal freedom can be a very frightening thought for some, but it's actually a message of hope and optimism - we can always take control of our lives and free ourselves of inner or outer constraints, or at least take pride in the struggle to do so.
"(Okay, dropping all the intellectual pretense, we just liked the artwork because it was freaking bird on fire - how cool is that!?) On a serious note, though, we also felt that a simple, raw and iconic visual theme would support the musical direction of the new album. We feel that the songs are our strongest ever, they're no-bullshit, focused and straight to the point, and our good friend Don G really nailed these concepts with his artwork.
"Finally, we have also been searching for a new logo for many years (also before the recent changes in line-up) but we never felt that we found a good enough alternative until now. With the direction of the new line-up and the new album, we not only felt that we had as good an occasion as any, but we also really liked the idea of a less polished, more raw logo which could reflect the changes in musical expression.
"Hope y'all dig it. The cover artwork is created by Don G (be.net/goerlitz), while the logo is created by BastiBasti @ Blacksome Full Service Agency." More...

Update: the editorial dealing with Christian unblack metal is now online here.
Metalunderground recently took a dive into black metal bands with pro-Christian themes in the Unearthing the Metal Underground column. Our upcoming companion editorial on Christianity in black metal is almost here, but in the mean time we've still got a few interviews to share from the musicians we polled on the subject on "unblack" metal.
Our next interview can be found after the jump and comes from guitarist Zaragil of Ophidian Forest, who hails from Croatia.
The earlier interviews on the anti-Christian side of the debate came from Plaag, Dehumanation, Frames, and Throne of Malediction. You can check out the answers from the pro-Christian musicians from Diamoth, Elgibbor, and Winter's Dawn. The band Nierty took a more neutral approach, defending the right of Christian musicians to make black metal, even while not agreeing with Christian beliefs. More...
Psycroptic drummer Dave Haley has posted the following update online:
"Well, 2010 was a pretty busy year for Psycroptic. We released our first-ever DVD in early 2010 and toured Australia with Decapitated to promote the release. We played China and Inner Mongolia; we were the first Western band to play the city of HoHot in Inner Mongolia; crazy stuff! We toured Europe with our close friends Cephalic Carnage and rounded out the year with a U.S. tour with Nile.
"In between all of this we were hard at work writing our new album, which we're happy to say is fully written. It's as yet untitled, but we are throwing a few names around. We start tracking the drums on February 14th at Red Planet Studios, and once completed we will be moving to Joe's [Psycroptic guitarist] studio to complete all the rest of the recording. We'll be taking our time on this one, as we have felt a little rushed in the past... The material is great so we want to ensure the recording matches. We'll post studio progress reports to keep everyone updated.
"Look out for the new album later this year!!"

Sweden dark metal act Katatonia has issued the following update about 20th anniversary shows in Europe:
"20 years of Katatonia going strong calls for a celebration and we'll be doing just that by throwing five very special anniversary gigs in Europe this coming May presented as the 'Last Fair Day Gone Night - An Evening With Katatonia' tour 2011.
"We've decided to play the entire 'Last Fair Deal Gone Down' album front to back as that's the one album that got us true worldwide recognition for the first time, but 2011 is also the album's 10th anniversary so re-visiting this album seems more fitting than any other record we've done. A second set will follow that will see us play a mix of tracks from the rest of our catalogue. We'll be doing some fan favorites classics but also look into a couple of obscure B-sides and such that we've never or hardly played live before. Together you should get over two hours of live music on this last fair day gone night. Besides the standard tickets, which will go on sale this Wednesday, January 19th, we've decided to reserve 70 tickets per show for VIPs who will be up for some real nice treats.
"If you're one of those VIPs, you will receive a Katatonia tour messenger bag upon arrival filled with exclusive items such as a t-shirt exclusive to that particular show, an exclusive VIP laminate, a + 20-page tour programme (that we're all busy writing as I'm typing this), a limited-edition vinyl of our latest album 'Night is The New Day' and a bunch more cool Katatonia merch items.
"But that's not all; all VIP's will have a dedicated meet-and-greet with the whole band so we can shake hands, have your picture taken and hang out for a chat! After that you can watch us soundcheck for about an hour where you'll hear some songs from the set list and watch us prepare the show. Then it's dinner time so you can go out and grab a bite while you'll be confident to learn that your VIP laminate will allow you back inside the venue a bit earlier than anyone else, so you'll have a smooth and free picking to where you like to position yourself.
"The London, U.K. show will be filmed for a DVD. Last but not least; right now we're very busy talking to all our equipment endorsers for them to make some goods available that we'll combine into one 'grand prize'! All VIP's will automatically enter into a draw for one lucky guy or girl to win this ultimate prize, which we'll reveal the details about in the next coming weeks. See it as a nice extra bonus already and you can't get disappointed….
"Head over to the tour dates for more detailed information. VIP tickets are on sale as of now and standard tickets will go up on sale this Wednesday.
"If you chose to get a VIP ticket, you should be prepared to be at the venue around 2 p.m. on show day. Exact times will vary per show but you'll be notified in advance of all confirmed details. We hope you're just as much excited about this special celebration as we are! See you at the show and let's have a toast for the last fair day gone night!"
