One of the most infamous thrash bands is Sodom if you didn't already know. And they've just unleashed fresh hell in the form of "In War and Pieces" released on January 13th in the US. Sodom will be heading out for the 70,000 Tons of Metal Cruise this weekend, then embarking on a European tour before rocking some festivals. I caught up with frontman Tom Angelripper to discuss the new album, a future US tour, and what he thinks about Tom Warrior's dislike of his new music. More...
Emmure is set to release the new album "Speaker of the Dead" on February 15th, 2011 through Victory Records. A sample of the new single "Demons With Ryu," which is off the upcoming album, can be heard at this location. You can also check out a trailer from the album below.
Arizona's Hemoptysis has checked in with the following announcement about a last minute show on Thursday the 20th:
"Last minute show! Hemoptysis plays this Thursday, the 20th at UB's in Mesa with Lustmord, Shadows Entwined (On Tour), Exiled (Hellion Records), and more! Only $8! No preticket sales for this one so just show up! All ages! Best Guinness pitchers in town and they are cheap!"
The band's full-length debut record, "Misanthropic Slaughter," will be released on Tuesday, March 8th, 2011.
An editorial piece has now been posted online through Metalunderground dealing with Christian musicians playing black metal, which is a style infamous for its use of Satanic and anti-Christian lyrics. The editorial is a follow up to our Unearthing the Metal Underground column that looked at three "unblack" metal bands.
To get a better perspective on the subject, I talked with members from both Christian unblack bands and bands that take an anti-religious stance. The responses I received from each band are also being posted online so readers can hear both sides of the argument and make up their own minds on the issue.
The next musician we'll hear from is solo artist Fire from Polish unblack metal band Elgibbor. You can also check out our previously posted interviews with unblack metal act Winter's Dawn, as well as Frames, Throne of Malediction, and Dehumanation on the anti-religious side. More...
After delving into an Unearthing the Metal Underground column on the controversial subject of Christian "unblack" metal, which uses the black metal style to espouse Christian values, we have also posted an editorial dealing with what role religion can play in the genre. While investigating the subject and checking out a series of bands taking either position on the issue, I sent out a questionnaire to both pro- and anti-Christian musicians. As a teaser for the editorial, each band's complete answers have been posted online so you can hear what both sides of the subject have to say.
We've already heard thoughts from both Frames and Throne of Malediction on the anti-Christian side, and Winter's Dawn on the pro-Christian side. The next musician to speak with me on the subject of Christianity in black metal was Matthew Kelly of U.S. based act Dehumanation. You can also check out the band's music at this location. More...
Metalunderground has posted an editorial on the role of religion in black metal, taking a further look at the subject after our recent Unearthing the Metal Underground column on Christan "unblack" metal. While examining a series of unblack metal bands for the upcoming article, I corresponded with musicians from both sides of the religious divide to get their input on whether the style of black metal can be separated from its anti-religious themes. As a teaser for the editorial, we'll be posting the full answers to the questionnaire I sent to each band.
New York hardcore legends Agnostic Front has posted the first in a series of videos online, documenting the making of their forthcoming new album, "My Life, My Way." You can check it out below. The album will be released in Europe on March 4th and on March 22nd in North America and will be their first studio release since 2007's, "Warriors."
Speaking on the new album, frontman Roger Miret stated: "After all is said and done we are amazed on how great our new record turned out! It’s by far our catchiest record to date and it’s going to make everyone want to sing along for sure. Freddy killed it on the production end, just capturing that hardcore vibe that only he can get out of Agnostic Front. The boys all put nothing but passion into the songs, and Erik Rutan just dialed it all in to make Agnostic Front sound as natural and as organic as ever. This one will definitely be a classic once it’s heard worldwide!" More...
Seven Thorns has posted a new music video online for the song "Liberty," which can be viewed in the clip below. The band also commented on the video: "First song on our new album 'Return to the Past.' The video features Mik (our composer) as stand in for our vocalist Erik who was ill on the day of the video shooting. The last part of the guitar solo is played by Olaf Lenk (At Vance), but since he couldn't come to the video shoot, you don't see a guitar solo."
Vreid is set to release the new album "V" through Indie Recordings on February 7th. The band has now posted a new music video online for the song "The Sound of the River," which can be viewed below. Vreid bass player and song writer Hváll commented on the video:
"The song was an obvious choice for us from the album. It’s a song that represents the album very well. It is based on the classic Vreid sound, but also is a good illustrator of the new doors we have opened with the album."

Osmose Productions has issued the following announcement about releasing a new album from Norway's Allfader:
"Allfader's second full-length album has been in the making for three years, and Black Blood Flux is without a doubt these Norwegian's strongest work to date. The band has matured as songwriters and musicians, and combined once again with the powerful production of Jacob Hansen this makes for an epic album which will please old fans, and grab unsuspecting listeners by the balls.
"Allfader's sound remains instantly recognizable, but with Black Blood Flux the band's traditional heavy metal influences are stronger than ever. In all its heaviness, the album sounds very organic and is completely stripped of synthesizers and clean vocals. The result is a rawer, more aggressive and focused sonic expression.
"Allfader has also secured a guest appearance from Tony Tunheim (Enslavement of Beauty) on the songs 'Draconian Command' and 'Torn From Flesh', where he contributes two stunning guitar solos.
"The amazing artwork of Black Blood Flux was created by Chilean artist Mauricio J. González, who also designed Allfader's new logo."

Toadstool Enterprises has issued the following announcement about a new upcoming album from U.S. black metal act Hæresiarchs of Dis:
"Cernunnos announced today the completion of material for the next planned Hæresiarchs of Dis release following 'In Obsecration of the Seven Darks' in April. The CD is a conceptual album with a working title of: 'Fragment 131: verses: 1-6 from the Third Sermon of the Codex Satyr’s Cross.'
"Track listing is currently set as a series of six verses. Cernnunos stated that the album is a conceptual piece and more ambitious in concept. Consisting of a series of interlinking tracks using a transcribed piece of linear text, the work will tell (or 'foretell') of a possible future event triggered by the folly of humanity described as a place called Satyr's Cross. Part speculative fiction, philosophy, religious dogma, and enlightenment of the soul through desecration of the human spirit, Cernnunos suggests late 2011 for release."
Swallow the Sun has issued the following recap of the band's "New Moon" tour dates:
"So, friends around the planet, it's time to summarize the New Moon tours of 2009 - 2010 and pick up the pieces of our gloomy and broken bones from countless stages, backstages, buses, hotels, bars, planes and police stations, giving huge thanks to all of you for making the New Moon tours the most successful tours so far for us! Thank you for coming to the shows, buying merchandise, believing in us and supporting the music!
"Once again we toured more than ever before, and this time we brought the Finnish winter to 24 different countries, playing 146 shows in total after the album release. During the New Moon touring period we completed 3 European tours, 2 North American tours, played many summer festivals and also had the pleasure to play in Israel and Romania for the first time. In 2010 we also made an endorsement deal with D'Addario strings, Planet Waves cables and Evans drum skins, and we are more than happy to be part of the D'Addario family from now on.
"So this year, 2011, we are going to keep things a bit more quiet and start preparing for the next Swallow the Sun album, which will be released at the end of this year or in the beginning of 2012... yeah, if the world doesn't end! Ten new songs are already in the works, but we are not going to rush with recording, album release or new tours because our bodies, hair and especially livers just can't handle it yet, folks!!
"We might do a few selected shows and festivals this year if it fits in with our plans, but otherwise this year is going to be a dark road of solitude towards new depths of gloom, beauty and despair – the 6th chapter of Swallow the Sun. Long, dark winter wishes to everybody."

"It's been a while since we've chimed in, we know. But regarding Weedeater, silence is sometimes a good thing, this being one of those times. First off, and as many of you might already know, we are very happy to announce that Jason...The Dragon is fully completed and in production now to be released March 15th via Southern Lord on CD, and sometime in April on vinyl. Trendkill Recordings has issued the following announcement about inking a deal with Archspire:
"Trendkill Recordings is proud to announce the signing of Vancouver tech death metal outfit Archspire. Focusing on a fast, energetic and musically technical live show, Archspire boasts extended range guitars, and fretless bass. Their insanely precise and creative riffing, complete with supersonic shotgun vocals and velocious gravity blasting is already getting them compared to the likes of Origin, Decrepit Birth, Spawn Of Possession or fellow Canadians Beneath The Massacre.
"Archspire recorded their new album 'All Shall Align' between May and December 2010 at The Hive studios. Working with seasoned producer Stuart McKillop, the result is a fast, complex, and intricate example of what Archspire has to offer. Disjointed melodies and speeds that rival the band's influences, this taste of what Archspireis able to accomplish has already started a buzz in the worldwide metal community."
"All Shall Align" will be out on Trendkill Recordings in digital format on April 7th, 2011 followed by a limited digipack CD edition on April 14th in Europe and April 21st in North America.

After a month of prepping, Mortiis is ready to hit the road later this week for a full European tour with Combichrist. "The new material rocks hard,” enthused Mortiis, namesake of the ever-evolving band. “The old has been upgraded to the point where it stands well next to the new material.”
The new material will be drawn from the band’s latest release, “Perfectly Defect,” which was released last fall as a free digital download. Mortiis will also showcase songs from the upcoming release, “The Great Deceiver.”
“Right now I’m equally curious, nervous, and excited about how our fans, old and new, will take to this,” he added. “We’ve spent a lot of energy in the last few weeks improving the quality of our live sound and I think it will be very obvious. I think it will translate to the actual performance of the band itself, as well.”
Mortiis also posted a teaser trailer online for the band's upcoming 2011 tour dates, which can be viewed below.
Zonaria hs announced that bass player Markus Åkebo has left the Swedish death/black metal band. Guitarist Emil Nyström comments about the departure:

We wish him all the best for his future ventures. The departure will not affect our upcoming plans and tours. We've got a good friend of ours stepping in on our upcoming European tour with Nile, Meleches, Dew-Scented and Darkrise."

"Since then we've been taking a break for Christmas and rocking out with some friends and fam over the new year and now I've dragged my ass to Finland to party with my girl Niki from the BBQBarbies, Jussi from the 69eyes and also hooked up with the Nuclear Blast team over here - I sense many a late night! Its gonna be wild!

The big names in metal get a lot of press and are famous for a reason, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a treasure trove of high quality metal bands hiding out in the underground. Each week with the Unearthing the Underground column we take a look at unknown bands in a specific genre or location that deserve to be heard by a wider audience.
Metal is unique in the musical world for the many different varieties to be found within it’s overall borders. “Experimental” or “Avant-Garde” metal bands are those groups that head outside the standard boundaries of the stylistic breakdowns, combining different sounds or even making up entirely new ones. Whether it’s extremely discordant vocals, a meshing of non-metal music with heavy atmosphere, or even random bouts of circus music, experimental metal typically has something that prevents the mainstream from recognizing it. These bands usually manage to get a small, but devoted, cult following that enjoys the odd juxtapositions and flagrant disregard for what’s socially acceptable in music.
In the last Unearthing the Experimental Underground we looked at the Czech Republic’s Oblomov, Poland’s Furia, and Italy’s Viscera///. This time around we’ll dig into U.S. based act Hallowed Butchery, as well as Virus and Source of Tide from Norway.
Maine based multi-instrumentalist Ryan Fairfield is the mastermind behind solo act Hallowed Butchery, which was previously known as Hallowed Butchery of the Son. Metalunderground conducted an interview with Ryan, in which he discussed the name change and the project’s upcoming work.
Hallowed Butchery frequently uses the stylistic elements of doom, with long, lingering guitar tones and slow moving music. There’s also a good deal of black metal to be heard in the music, along with some truly odd sounds that often defy easy description. One of the project's more experimental works is the fourteen minute epic “Coffin Life,” which was included on a recent split with New York’s Batillus. The song chronicles the life, demise, and surprising afterlife of a man who commits suicide, going through several distinct changes in style. A clip from the epic song can be heard at the band’s MySpace page.
The video below also contains the track “The Kennebec” from the band’s debut EP “Funeral Rites for the Living.” More...
