Cover art is similar 2 all their other albums. Yawn! Looking forward 2 new music though. Hopefully they play Mayhem Fest this summer as rumored. Disturbed Korn Five Finger Death Punch fans would get a true metal lesson from a band that destroys live !

Been listening to a 3-song sampler and I like it a lot - way more than TOTTG so far. Has a crisper more mdm sound whereas the last was a bit too downtuned for my tastes.

I've seen these guys live, good band but come on what's your definition of "destroying live" ? because Five Finger Death Punch has hundred times the energy.

best of the best???? really????
try listening to other viking metal bands before bestowing such a grandiose title on amon amarth. not saying i don't like them, just recommending enslaved, tyr, bathory, borknagar. try them then say whether amon amarth is still best of the best. \m/

^ha! bathory? 'viking metal'??

this entire notion about 'viking metal' is fvckin ridiculous...fvckin norsemen didn't play any fvcking metal...wield metal? wear metal? Yes indeed, but their songs were triumphant or melancholy folk renderings

great band, super cliche new album art (still don't mind lokin at it!), and i'm sure they will deliver at least a decent offering

horns up, Sverige!! \M/

I think it’s anthropomorphism. Surtur “is” the volcanic fire. “He” comes from the “south,” (the underworld, below ground.) He “rules” over volcanic fire from the underworld, can be taken metaphorically, or extend to animism at this point. So, extending on anthropomorphism and animism, indeed, the human beings, and “gods“, destroyed by volcanic heat and fire, are destroyed by Surtur, and it’s a great story. Surtur's wrath is impressive, swinging his sword and leveling the world with hot volcanic ash and lava from the underworld. I can’t wait to hear the album.

On the topic of Viking Metal--

I don't consider bands that are just viking themed to be Viking Metal. Viking Metal must SOUND like Viking Metal. Bands like Bathory and Falkenbach come to mind for that. At least, that's how I see it.

As post 28 correctly pointed out, Amon Amarth are a "viking themed" Melodic Death Metal band. Their genre is Melodic Death Metal.

"The Last Stand of Frej" is the last moments of peace (Frej is peace, peasure, also associtated with associated with weather and farming, human necessities for a comfortable life) before volcanic errution. Volcanic eruption, obviouly throws a wrench into peaceful, comfortable life, destroys crops, lives. Not only that, is pisses people off when they can't get a flight out of the airport. How this fits into the ecomony. Anyway, with peace out of the way, Surtr can rise, and people are thrown into a hell of heat, lava, and ash, life distrupted, no longer comfortable, lives lost. That "normal life" where the comforts are bestowed by Frej (kind of like a "state of Frej" not unlike a "state of volcanic activity"), isn't livable during Surtur's time. That is Surtur's wrath, Surtur's reign. There is a strong theme of surviving in the face of adversity in the song titles, of living or dying in the face of adversity. Can't wait.
