Pit Stories: "Don’t Do This To El Guapo"

We've been talking to bands and fans everywhere to get their favorite mosh pit stories. This week The Binary Code guitarist Jesse Zuretti sends in a short-story length submission that he even titled "Don’t Do This To El Guapo."

A wise man by the name of Bas Rutten once said, “He tried to kill me, now I gotta return the favor."

Back in May we did a quick, week-long jog of dates with a gaggle of maniacs called Gloominous Doom. What seemed sure to be a super smooth run of shows turned quickly into a giant rager by the time we hit our first night. The second date had us doing an on-air performance and interview for UMass Lowell‘s Stress Factory Radio Station before our much anticipated basement show with the_Network and Hivesmasher. The show was going down in the concrete slab beneath the house where the Hivesmasher cubs keep all of their honey. This makes only for a dangerous, loud, and uncontrollable night from what we learned very quickly. Brett, our faithful live Bass-Master 3000 (also of East of the Wall/Biclops/Day Without Dawn/Postman Syndrome/Yoko Ono/Rolling Stones/Chumbawamba notoriety) managed to score a nice boo-boo from good old Aaron Heinold of Hivesmasher, incurring the aftermath of a Hivesmasher stunt induced by a severe amount of alcohol consumption. Read with caution, in case you ever plan on going to one of these basement shows with the level of rage emanating from the bands on the bill.

We’re nearing the end of our set, which was nothing more than a pain in the ass for me, as I broke a string nearly every note I played (thanks to Joseph Spiller of System Divide/Aborted & Kevin from the_Network, I was able to switch over to his guitar, and break his strings). The rage in the air is starting to feel real heavy. Not a frustrated rage, but a rage created in cooperation by the bands and the show-goers. The made-for-pain-and-violence setup of the basement made it ever so easy for the rage-aholics to spread their wings of anger, and throw bottles and karate dance in the 10x30 space we rocked in. As we’re moving our crap out of the way for the_Network, we can feel the kids there with like-minded angst toward humanity getting pumped for the misanthropic gaggle of drunken outdoorsmen to start playing their ferocious set. Even without a bassist, these guys managed to make the concrete crumble and shake by the end of their set.

As soon as Hivesmasher pummels their way into their first song, the maniacs comprising the entire audience start raging a level higher. Broken glass covers the floor where Converse sneakers and Sauconys patter to the beat of the grind. A large man dressed in a bright orange windbreaker suit (head to toe, this guy was the sweetest deal of the night) flails his arms and legs, kicking and air chopping, sort of like a graceful asylum patient with a jar of centipedes dumped into his now pried-open straightjacket. Nevertheless, the pot's about to boil, and we're in the eye of the shit-storm.

At a show we play, 9 times out of 10, you can find Brett up front, dead center, head banging in all of his 110lb glory for every single band on the bill. As per usual, there was no deviation from the norm on this particular night - especially since Hivesmasher are long-time amigos of Brett and the East of the Wall crew. This could go both ways: it could be a “bro-down” set, where a band acknowledges the sweetness of bros getting together and being idiots, or Hivesmasher could simply acknowledge Brett’s presence by smashing a microphone into his eye socket.

I'm sitting next to our merch table in the back of the room, watching the kids near the band go ape shit, when all of a sudden Little Man Brett comes trudging over to me, half bent over, holding his hands over his right eye. When he moves his hands away from his eyes, I do the typical “Ooooo, sheeeit that looks bad” in response to the wound. The microphone Aaron decided to use to penetrate Brett’s skull with apparently managed to snag the outer right brow and cheek causing it to bleed quite a bit. Essentially, the mic did not fit into Brett’s skull through his eye socket. Now, Brett might be a tiny guy, but he proved to be anything but a pussy. He simply takes a shirt, holds it up to his face to keep the blood out of his eye, and walks right back up to the front of the “stage” area, head-banging as if nothing happened. And this was only one song in!

Aaron and the Hivesmasher dudes really made us feel like we were a part of some kind of smashing brotherhood by the end of the night. Brett opted out of getting stitches at any point during the tour (and did not get stitches any time after the tour).

The Binary Code's new EP, "Priest," will be out August 10th. They've also announced a release show for August 2nd in New York and have recently posted a new single online. For more The Binary Code music, check out their MySpace page.

Check back every Tuesday for more pit stories.

Kataklysm Posts Album Track-By-Track Breakdown

Maurizio Iacono, vocalist of Canadian extreme metallers Kataklysm, recently provided a track by track break down of the their new album "Heaven’s Venom." The following is Part 1 of the commentary, which encompasses the first three tracks from the album.

A Soulless God: This song was written after a crazy experience in Vancouver where we played a show with Kreator. We realized after walking outside for about a 5 mile radius or so that it was a crack infested, homeless concentration camp. It looked like zombie land. What happened is that for the Olympics they collected all these addicts and put them in this one sector. Our club was in the middle of it and we all freaked out about it. We couldn’t believe that they would let something like this happen in Canada. Anyway, the song deals with putting yourself in the skin of a homeless, addict and wondering where God is to save you. It’s a very thrash oriented song with some cool grooves and aggressive structures.

Determined (Vows of Vengeance): This song has a more tech approach and also visits some older Kataklysm while incorporating our newer elements. One of my faves on the album! Song deals with falling on your face, picking yourself up and moving forward. This one will be a pit favorite!

Vintage Flesh Issues Recording Update

Vintage Flesh has checked in with the following update about recording new material:

"Last Sunday went as well as we hoped for. We were able to get some more fine guitar work out of Terry and that may conclude his contributions as I understand it. We are in the process of converging forces between us and him and it is our hope and desire to have Terry S. as a full fledged member of our unit as a final result. Expect to see him as a certain member to our live line up at the very least.

"This coming Sunday will see Raypissed tearing out his vokills for the first time on this venture with two or three songs and Hex will begin keyboard work. One more guitar solo to be added to our only ten minute plus song and its on to some fine tweaking to be done. Having heard the basis recording of every tune last night for the first time (on tape), I can tell you my drums sound as drunk and stoned as I was! lol! Lose and slop worthy but truly underground and unpolished. Still very compelling in places. All is going as planned! I see the light of the freezing Moon at the end of the tunnel!"

Weedeater Announces "3rd Time's A Charm" Tour

Weedeater has announced several new headlining shows throughout the Midwest and Southeastern U.S. this September. Kicking things off in their home state, the band will devastate the crowd at Raleigh, North Carolina's Hopscotch Festival on September 11th, also with Public Enemy, Tortoise, Kylesa, U.S. Christmas, Harvey Milk and more. Weedeater will be dropping plenty of new material from the upcoming album on these shows, which will lead directly up to the recording of "Jason...the Dragon" with Steve Albini.

Weedaeter has been pushed to the band's limits over the past twelve months. While it's been a year of heavy and successful touring for the band, it was also a year of catastrophic physical injury. Leading off with Dixie Dave Collins' shotgun accident which spawned the brutal "Nine Toe Tour" earlier this year, and continuing shortly after that with drummer Keko tearing his meniscus after returning from said tour and requiring surgery. Both of those accidents prevented the group's two previously scheduled meetings with Albini. The group's latest installment of injury includes guitarist Shep breaking his pinkie finger while on tour in Europe this July alongside Black Cobra and Saviours. Luckily, Shep can still riff with his cast so the European tour and the recording session were spared. More...

Guitarist Anders Blakkheim Nyström had the following to say: "The reason why we picked this design to be the winner is simply because it looks like it was dragged out of a closet that hasn't been opened since 1990! It pays tribute to rest in festering slime after the bloodbath over bloodstock!"

Caliban Comments On Canceled Show

Caliban has issued the following statement about the canceled show at the Sikelian Hell Fest in Alcamo/IT on Saturday, July 24th:

"Due to false organizational estimation the Sikelian Hell Festival in Palermo was barely visited. Although the festival management showed a lot of effort, the fans stayed away and therefore caused a financial disaster!

"We, and also the other bands were not paid enough to cover all the costs. Thus, our management was forced to cancel our performance at the festival. We are very sorry for the handful people that still found their way to the festival grounds. If we get the chance we will make up for that show!"

The Devil Wears Prada To Star In Zombie Comic

"ZOMBIE, The EP Comic," a limited-edition, traditional-sized comic book based on the fictionalized adventures of rising metalcore band The Devil Wears Prada, bundled with the band's upcoming "Zombie EP" (Ferret), will be available at retail exclusively at all Hot Topic stores for $9.99 beginning August 24. The Zombie bundle can also be ordered on the band's website here and here.

The 14-page "ZOMBIE, The EP Comic" was written by JL Bourne who penned "Day by Day Armageddon - A Zombie Novel," considered one of the best zombie novels ever written, and tells the story of five combat soldiers, armed with a hi-tech arsenal, on a perilous, top-secret mission in a harrowing world infected with zombies. "ZOMBIE, The EP Comic," was illustrated by Kevin Mellon, noted for his 2007 book "GEARHEAD," which is currently in development as a major motion picture.

"We thought doing a comic book as a companion to the 'Zombie EP' was a natural and fitting idea," said the band's vocalist/frontman Mike Hranica, whose concept for a zombie-themed disc was rooted in his having read "The Zombie Survival Guide" by Max Books late last year. "We love that "ZOMBIE, The EP Comic," is not a CD-booklet, but a full-sized, stylized, superhero comic book that stands on its own."

The Devil Wears Prada is currently on its "Back to the Roots Tour," playing some of the biggest venues of their career, and multiple nights as some of the smallest. The "Back To The Roots" tour, in partnership with Rockstar Energy Drink, kicked off last month and will go through to the Labor Day weekend. Remaining dates are below: More...
