Riffs Not Riots Charity Gig In Vancouver, BC

The Riffs Not Riots show was an effort by the Vancouver metal community to showcase local talent while emphasizing that while we love our violent music, we don’t condone violence in our streets. The show was a way of protesting against the riot that devastated Vancouver shortly after the Canucks’ loss against the Boston Bruins in game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.

The MetalUnderground.com-sponsored event took place on July 13th, 2011, at the Fortune Sound Club, strangely located in the heart of Chinatown. Proceeds went to Canucks for Kids Fund, a nonprofit charity run by the Vancouver Canucks NHL organization. The crowd was a mixed group, ranging from hipsters to an old guy in a fishing cap (he had to be at least 60 or 70) who rocked out until closing. Somehow, the anti-riot theme of the show toned down the moshing as most of the audience just stood and soaked up the tunes. More...

Interview

Angela Gossow Dishes On "Khaos Legions" And More

Among the most well known of the heavy metal front women in the scene today, Arch Enemy's Angela Gossow has lent her distinctive growls and screams again to the band's new album "Khaos Legions" (reviewed here).

With "Khaos Legions" now unleashed, Angela took out some time to discuss the new album with Metalunderground.com, delving into the writing and recording process, as well as touching on the lyrical themes. She also opened up about her lack of belief in any gods, stating, "This planet is a wonderful place as it is, we do not need to add fairies and angels to it. Religion is truly about humankind’s vanity." Angela went further into the subject of atheism, making her feelings on the subject clear in no uncertain terms by adding, "I am fine with religion as a purely private choice, just like children are allowed to believe in Santa Claus. Anybody can believe in anything, as long as it does not affect a society so profoundly like it still does to this day. Religion is a powerful tool to govern whole societies with fear, deprive people of their basic human rights and serve as an excuse to wage war and terror. Religion is the true root of all evil."

Below you can find the complete interview, which also includes the Arch Enemy vocalist's explanation of the inspiration behind the new album artwork, and information on the band's upcoming U.S. tour dates. More...

Redemption Announces "This Mortal Coil" Details

Redemption, which features in its ranks guitarist/songwriter Nick van Dyk and Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder, has announced that the band's 5th studio album release and follow-up to "Snowfall On Judgment Day" will be entitled "This Mortal Coil." The new album is to be released October 11th, 2011 in North America and on September 26th, 2011 in Europe and via InsideOut Music.

The band recorded and mixed "This Mortal Coil" with producer Neil Kernon (Queensryche, Nevermore, Kansas, etc.). The album's artwork, available for viewing below, was created by
acclaimed artist and longtime band collaborator Travis Smith.

Redemption's Nick van Dyk checked in commenting on the album as follows:

"I'm extremely pleased to announce that work on 'This Mortal Coil' has been completed.
It was a pleasure to work with Neil Kernon during the production, although I dare say we had more challenges and curve-balls in this process than either of us is accustomed to. Nonetheless we overcame everything in our path, from internet failures to lightning strikes, and since one of the themes of this CD is essentially overcoming adversity, the production process served as a bit of a metaphor for the whole concept!

"The new CD continues our creative effort to combine heaviness with melody -- fusing those disparate elements has always been part of Redemption's sound, along with an element that I have called emotional urgency, which we've maintained here. All in all, it sounds like Redemption -- although importantly I think it's by far our best-sounding record, owing to the work of Neil Kernon and the mastering of Alan Douches."

And Van Dyk adds regarding the artwork:

"We have worked once again with the incredibly talented Travis Smith on our art; we work very well together and he has a proven knack for bringing my concepts to life visually."

Sigh Comments On Upcoming New Album

Japan's Sigh has announced the band new album will be titled "In Somniphobia," and the band has now checked in with the following update about the album:

"In Somniphobia is a sonic nightmare that lasts for more than an hour. The musical direction is pretty much far from that of the last two albums, 'Scenes from Hell' and 'Hangman's Hymn.' It is not easy to describe its direction, but probably one can say that it is something between 'Imaginary Sonicscape,' 'Hail Horror Hail,' and 'Gallows Gallery,' or rather, simply a nightmarish version of 'Imaginary Sonicscape.' Put heavy metal, classical music, jazz, Indian traditional music, Stockhausen, and Xenakis into a cauldron of hell and stir it, you'll get 'In Somniphobia.'

"The first two songs are VERY heavy metal, but from the third track, it begins. Five songs are woven together, which part is named 'Lucid Nightmares.' It is a pure sonic description of nightmares. This is surrealistic, ethnic, druggy, atmospheric and definitely scary! Lots of vintage gems are being used such as Minimoog, Prophet-5, Clavinet D-6, Roland RE-201 Space Echo etc. along with some ethnic instruments like Indian Sarangi, Sitar, Tampura, and Tabla. Kam Lee (ex-Massacre, Bone Gnawer etc.) and Metatron (The Meads of Asphodel) cooperated with the lyrics and the vocals for 'Lucid Nightmares.'

"Listen with Headphones is strictly recommended. Smoke before you try this. Bad trip guaranteed!"

Isolation Streaming Track From Debut Album

Today, CVLT Nation is offering up a stream of "Closing A Circle" from German blackened doom rockers Isolation. "Closing A Circle" is the title track from the band's recently released debut full-length.

Commented guitarist/vocalist Johannes Schmid: "The song is certainly one of the strongest tracks on the album and that's why we chose it as the title track. The song contains nearly all elements that define our music. Lyrically, the song is about those moments in life where mistakes seem to repeat themselves and you feel you cannot to do anything about it."

To witness the gloom and check out the track, point your browser to this location.

Five years after Isolation released the band's first demo, "Striding On The Path Of Nihil," the act has finally released its debut album. Appropriately titled "Closing A Circle," the record, which was mixed and mastered at Studio Die Tonmeisterei (Long Distance Calling, Tephra, Omega Massif, etc.), marks the end of an era for the band.

“Releasing our debut album was an important step to us and we wanted to make sure that we found our very own sound– so we took our time,” explains guitarist/vocalist Johannes Schmid.

According to a statement from the band's publicist, "Musically, Isolation hs been constantly evolving from the angry, chaotic, depressive black metal of Striding On The Path Of Nihil and the doomish second demo, A Prayer For The World To End, towards calmer more atmospheric regions, reaching its peak with the mesmerizing extensive riffing on Bleak.

"Isolation in 2011 can generally be described as atmospheric, melancholic rock/metal with mostly clean singing tempered by occasional outbursts of harsh vocals. While hints of early black metal as exposed on their earlier offerings remain buried within their collective ambiance, it is indeed difficult to give Isolations style a definitive label."

Almah Comments On Returning From Hiatus

Last week Almah played a short "warm-up" tour around the Northeast of Brazil, including two headlining shows at the 13th ForCaos (Fortaleza) and Armazem do Som (Juazeiro do Norte) festivals, and series of supporting events such as singing sessions and workshops. Almah came back to live activities after a one-year break, and Felipe Andreoli (bass) had this to say:

"It was very pleasant to hit the stage with Almah again after one year. Not only because I love the music, but also because we always have a good time together, as friends. It's a very special and privileged relationship. We had a couple of rehearsals just to take the rust off our hands - and throats, for that matter, but it was surprisingly easy to put everything together as far as performance and sound. It honestly didn't seem like we hadn't played together one year ago. It felt more like a little while. What's funny is that we seem to play better together every time, even when we don't play for months!"

The new Almah CD "Motion" will see the light of day via AFM Records this fall, with the release date to be announced soon.

We ask that all serious inquiries send us a video of themselves playing either covering something or playing something original showing us technique and style. We'll then pick the ones we like best and have you come in for a try out. Guitarists must have good equipment (half stacks & etc...), be quick learner, dedicated, self motivated, financially stable, be able to practice up least three times a week and be able to play shows every weekend, good stage presence and aspire to tour full time. You can send your tryout videos to band@thesummoned.com and we'll be in touch."

You can also find samples of The Summoned's music by heading over to the band's official MySpace page.
