Chelsea Grin's "My Damnation" Charts At #64

Chelsea Grin's new album, "My Damnation," debuted onto the Billboard Top Album Charts this week at #64 with over 6,700 total sales in the first week. This marks the highest sales and chart position for both the band and the band's label, Artery Recordings. The album also landed on a number of other charts #6 on the Hard Music Chart, #16 on the Rock Chart, #8 on the Independent Chart and #127 on the Top Albums Digital Chart. The band kicked off the All Stars Tour Summer Tour last week with Emmure, Alesana, Iwrestledabearonce, and more (tour dates below). Chelsea Grin's highly anticipated new album, "My Damnation" (Artery Recordings / Razor & Tie), is available now in stores nationwide, on iTunes and at Merchnow. Produced by Zeuss (The Acacia Strain, Hatebreed, The Red Chord), the 10 track album has a conceptual bend to it, based loosely on being condemned to hell and finding your way out to salvation.

Aesop Dekker Guest DJs On WFMU This Tuesday

Tuesday August 2nd from 1-2 PM New York time, AESOP DEKKER, drummer for AGALLOCH, WORM OUROBOROS and the recently split LUDICRA, will be guest DJing on Diane Farris' program on WFMU.

Aside from hosting a killer set of music, he will be making a statement about the demise of crucial black metallers, LUDICRA, who announced their split only days ago. Listeners can ask him questions on the live online playlist during the program.

WFMU can be heard at this location streaming and archived, and broadcasts in the NYC area on 91.1 FM.

Sunday Old School: Testament

Today sees Sunday Old School reach it's 100th article. You might say reaching this milestone is a true testament to how high heavy metal fans regard the old school. Or you might say that the previous sentence was just a bad pun to lead into this week's band. Either way, this week Sunday Old School will be looking at Testament, one of the most popular bands to emerge from the Bay Area thrash metal scene.

Testament was originally founded under the name Legacy in 1983 by guitarist Eric Peterson, along with his cousin Derrick Ramirez. The band took a significant step when Ramirez was replaced by guitarist Alex Skolnick and singer Steve "Zetro" Souza. The band were late comers of sorts to the Bay Area thrash scene, with such other bands as Metallica, Slayer and Exodus pre-dating them, which perhaps might have been a key factor in Souza deciding to leave the band to join Exodus after they fired singer Paul Baloff. Despite his resignation, Souza suggested that the band attempt to recruit Chuck Billy to replace him behind the microphone, a move which proved highly successful.

After finding out that the name The Legacy was already trademarked by a jazz band, the group changed their name to Testament on Stormtroopers Of Death frontman Billy Milano's suggestion. They remained close to their Legacy moniker though, and after signing with Megaforce Records, used the title "The Legacy" as the name of their debut album. The record was a success, earning the band favourable comparisons to Metallica and containing several songs that remain in the band's setlist to this day, including "Over The Wall" and "First Strike Is Deadly." Testament supported the album by supporting Anthrax on their "Among The Living" tour, which helped to make a household name out of Anthrax and thus garnered Testament much attention. Thrash fans remained enamoured with the band when they released their second album, "The New Order," which followed in the same vein as "The Legacy" both lyrically and musically. Joshua Craig Announces Guitar Clinic

The Alien Blakk frontman Joshua Craig has an upcoming guitar clinic at Berklee College Of Music in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday, September 27th, 2011.

The clinic will involve Joshua playing 5 songs from The Alien Blakk's offerings, including "Bekoming" (reviewed here), with special insight into the guitarist/writer/producers technique.

Following the guitar clinic will be a question and answer with the artist. More information on the guitar clinic with the location and time are available at this location.

Italy's Draugr has checked in with the following brief announcement about recording a follow-up to "De Ferro Italico," which will be released through Blue Blood Records:

"Album under recording! A new album with 7 tracks will be recorded and released on Blue Blood Records! The recording start pretty soon."

Matt Harvey Dissects Exhumed

From any number of different standpoints, be they social, financial, mental, or even physical, being in a metal band has never been an easy path to take. Sure, there are far more difficult circumstances a person can find themselves in than enduring 14 hour drives between shows and living off $5 food buyouts every day, but these and many other factors can add up over time, and what they usually add up to is a classic case of burnout.

That was the situation Exhumed's Matt Harvey found himself in six years ago when he decided to lay the goregrind band he founded in his mid-teens to rest. For a decade and a half he had put the full weight of the band almost solely on his shoulders, and in 2005 he was done—burnt to a crisp and bound for the blissful, perpetual waking coma that is otherwise known as the real world.

But this sojourn into the realm of slack-jawed, doe-eyed suburban middling, with musical projects existing only in the periphery, was to be only a temporary one for Harvey. Having stepped away from Exhumed for a few years and tasted what life was like without it, the passion for the demands of being part of the underground elite network of road tramping metal warriors he thought had been forever lost was allowed to return naturally over time. Now, Exhumed is back with a literal and figurative vengeance, and recently released an album that, despite Exhumed's long hiatus, lacks nothing of the psycho-carnivorous edge the band held in its forceps-like grip back in the day. In fact, many critics have hailed “All Guts, No Glory,” as Exhumed's finest hour, past or present. Period.
