Cipher Drummer Found Dead

NYDailyNews.com has reported that the body of Cipher drummer Daniel Bobis, who went missing while surfing, was discovered today by search crews. An excerpt from the article follows:

Local fisherman in Indonesia on Thursday discovered the body of a popular Long Island surfer and teacher who vanished after wiping out on a wave on Sunday morning. Search crews in West Lampung, Sumatra, said the fishermen pulled the body of Daniel Bobis from waters about 20 miles from the remote break he was surfing when he went missing.

Bobis, 32, allegedly fell off his surfboard after colliding with another surfer while riding a 10-foot swell. His leash broke, sending his board washing ashore.

The Long Beach High math teacher was on a monthlong trek though Sri Lanka and Indonesia with his wife and a friend.

The trio was due back in the U.S. in mid-August, and friends said Bobis and his wife, Rachel, had planned to start a family.

Cipher also posted the following brief message online: "Thanks to all that send condolences for the loss of our brother. We'll keep you all updated. We're all supporting each other, both current and past members of Cipher. Thanks for the genuine love and care. Danny will remain in all of our hearts."

You can find additional details on the band and listen to music available for streaming by heading over to the official Cipher Facebook page.

Axemaster Reforms With New Vocalist

Ohio based act Axemaster has officially reformed and begun songwriting for the band's next release. Original Axemaster members Joe Sims and Brian Henderson have returned to the band and they have also recruited new vocalist Tony Webster (Archetype, ex-Mo Rage) for the upcoming release.

Founding member and guitar player Joe Sims had this to say:

"I couldn't be happier with how things have turned out and being back as Axemaster. I've been in a few bands over the last 20 years but Axemaster has always been the one I've been known for and is by far my favorite. I'm actually really glad that Inner Terror didn't go under the name Axemaster because the music we did on that CD just wasn't 'axemaster-like' enough, not like the stuff we're doing now. This is without a doubt the best writing I've ever done and with all the talent that Tony and Brian bring to the table I think this CD is gonna be something special!!!!"

Drummer Brian Henderson also stated:

"I feel this is the most intense music Joe has put together and will be the biggest challenge ever for me to record my parts. Also I am looking forward to working with Tony to put a totally different and much needed voice in the mix. This CD will rock!!"

New vocalist Tony Webster added:

"This is a great band with a very long history in the metal scene. I had never really heard of Axemaster until Joe contacted me through the internet and asked if I would be interested in singing with them. After he sent me some of the demos for the new album I checked out the music and really liked it. So I decided to take on another band aside from Archetype and have started writing songs with them. It sounds like old school thrash metal mixed with some doom elements. We have demoed around 15 songs so far and they are turning out awesome! This is going to be the best album the band has ever done musically and working with these guys has been great so far!"

Mayan Announces Plans For Three More Albums

PowerofMetal has conducted an interview with guitarist Frank Schiphorst of new symphonic death metal opera act Mayan, which just released its first album "Quarterpast" (reviewed here).

During the interview Frank revealed that the band, which also features Mark Jansen of Epica and a guest appearance by Jeroen Paul Thesseling of Obscura, has signed with Nuclear Blast for a total of four albums. An excerpt from the interview is available below.

PowerofMetal: What is going to happen when the band gets more popular than the bands some of you are now playing in? Could this give problems in the future?

Frank: We do our best to combine everything. Shouldn't give problems, only added positiveness!

PowerofMetal: Will there be a second and third album in the years to come?

Frank: We've signed with Nuclear Blast for four albums, so you can count on it! We've already written like four or five new songs now. Our music flows out automatically when we get together, it's something natural, we inspire each other big time, and this works really fast.

Evile Streaming Preview Of New Album

British thrashers Evile are due to release their new album "Five Serpent's Teeth" on September 26th, 2011. A 15-minute preview of the album, featuring one-and-a-half minutes of each song , is available to listen to in the player below.

Evile guitarist Ol Drake comments:

"I was delighted to hear iTunes upped their track preview length to 1:30, but everyone doesn't have iTunes. A fan of ours, Austin H, put all the previews into one video on YouTube. I support people 'trying before buying' so I'd love to let people know these previews exist to give you an idea of the album instead of downloading the album in time to come - after all, when people download an album, they more often than not say it's to 'try the album out', so I see this as quite a fair compromise to condone the previews being heard by everyone. I'm not wholly against downloading, I'm more against the disrespect shown to artists by downloading an artist's work, liking it and not rightly paying for it. Bands these days, not just Evile, need their fans' support. Support music!"

Voyager Signs To Sensory Records

Western Australia’s Voyager has signed with the New Jersey-based Sensory Records for the release of the band's upcoming fourth full-length album, "The Meaning of I." A statement about the band's history from Voyager's publicist reads as follows:

"Conceived in 1999 by German-born musician Danny Estrin, Voyager certainly well known throughout the prog metal circuit worldwide, having carved an incredible, diehard cult fanbase since inception. The unit’s previous three albums display their unique and even strange integration of symphonic, electronic and progressive elements crafted into a seamless, incredibly executed, multi-genre style all their own, bridging gaps between metal subgenres and even verging on 80’s pop."

The official street date for "The Meaning of I" is set for October 11th, 2011. The band is also aiming this release to be available to fans in-person at an upcoming performance on September 16th at the annual ProgPower USA in Atlanta, Georgia. Voyager will share co-headline slots of the massive festival with Therion, Ihsahn, Sanctuary, Dream Evil, Labyrinth and more.
