Autumns Eyes Gives Album Update
One-band black metal outfit Autumns Eyes is current mixing the new album, "Please Deceive Me," and Dan Mitchell has issued an update about the process:
"As mixing began on the new release 'Please Deceive Me' I wanted to focus on two rules of thumb; breathe dynamics into each song so they each have a life of their own, and create sounds and effects naturally rather than using pre-recorded ones. When trying to add atmosphere to an Autumns Eyes song, I always shoot for the typical “night time crickets” sound or any number of free thunder clap sound effects you can download for free at just about every sound effects website. Its my way of establishing to the listener that this is where the music comes from and draws inspiration. Granted it can be some what cliche, but at least this time around its undergone a more organic process.
"Instead of using pre-recorded samples and sounds, I recorded my own right in the woods of Connecticut where both my studio and I reside. This gave a broader range of creativity and sonic possibilities right off the bat. While recording outside, I was able to capture my own reverb as well. If your not familiar with audio engineering, reverb is basically that “echo” sound you hear on instruments and vocals that give both atmosphere and depth to what you hear. Using Apple Logic Studio 9's Impulse Response Utility I was able to capture any environment I wanted in my own back yard. Basically the process started with a laptop, a pair of speakers, and a microphone. A frequency sweep is played through speakers in the woods where a microphone records the sweep and sends it into the laptop. The program then removes the audio frequency sweep, and captures the reverberation from the environment the sweep was played in. Now the reverb can be saved and later applied to any vocal/instrument/sound during the mixing process.
"It might sound like overboard to some and may even be used sparingly throughout the album, but its those subtle differences that make the end result more unique. One of my favorite albums of all time is 'October Rust' by Type O Negative, and its the small details of that record that give you a sense of atmosphere and emotion. From the bird chirps on the intro to 'Green Man', to the sounds of branches creaking and twisting during the beginning of 'Wolf Moon'. Adding such elements to your record make it more organic and memorable. In our age of digital recording, where especially in metal, it seems like a group of dogs chasing each others tails. There are a ton of bands just mimicking what the other is doing, and trying to cash in on it. Im not trying to break away from the genre with this release, but Im definitely trying to show people that there can be a broader range of sound in metal instead of just blast beats and screaming."

Volbeat Posts In Studio Video With Napalm Death
Danish hard rock act Volbeat have posted a brand new video documenting the recording of their upcoming studio ablum titled "Beyond Hell/Above Heaven." The video features a guest appearance from Napalm Death's Barney Greenway recording guest vocals.

Michigan Deathfest Cancels 20th Anniversary Event
It has been announced via myspace that the 2010 edition of the Michigan Deathfest has been cancelled. The cancellation comes due to conflicts with venue changes, band issues and lack of ticket sales.
Promoter 'Metal Mom' issued the following statement:
"The announcement of Michigan Deathfest officially being cancelled was a very difficult one to make. Due to many conflicts starting with the date change, the announcement of Iron Maiden playing close to the fest on the same date, and many more, the show took many hits prior to the original venue change. The venue and date of the event was changed in the best interest of the bands and fans, but we continued to take hits from bands dropping off the bill for various reasons, band break-ups, line-up changes, etc. etc. The final hit for the festival (which probably had the biggest effect on the cancellation) was the overall lack of presale tickets sold and general lack of interest in the event. If fans were planning on attending the festival, we sure didn’t know about it and we apologize for any inconvenience to anyone that did plan on coming, especially if you lost money in the process of planning your trip. Still having one month till the festival date, we tried to give everyone ample notice of the cancellation. St. Andrew’s Hall is working with us to set up a free admission show to make up for the cancellation of the festival. It will feature many of the festival bands. As soon as a date is confirmed we will announce the show. Hope free works for everyone and once again we’d like to apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you very much for your continued support over the last 20 years! ~Metal Mom"
End Of Green Announces New Single Tracklisting
German dark metallers End of Green have announced details regarding the release of the band's upcoming single "Goodnight Insomnia" which is to be made available on July 30th, 2010 through iTunes. The single features five tracks in total, including three different versions of the song "Goodnight Insomnia."

Comeback Kid Reveals Special Edition Album Details
Canadian hardcore punk act Comeback Kid have announced deluxe edition details regarding the band's upcoming studio album. The album, titled "Symptoms + Cures," is set for release on August 31st, 2010 through Distort/Victory Records and will be made available in a handful of unique versions.
The album will be made available in a regular single disc standard edition, CD/T-Shirt combo, three unique vinyl colours and finally an enhanced CD that allows the listener to remove audio tracks from the album and play along using their own instruments.
Debut Hyperion Album To Feature Megadeth Member
Pittsburgh's newest progressive metal act Hyperion have announced the guest musicians set to appear on the band's debut album "Orchestrating The Myth." Guest musicians set to appear on the album include Glen Drover of Megadeth and Dan Mongrain of Voivod. "Orchestrating The Myth" is planned for a late 2010 or early 2011 release.
Breather Resist Non-Album Tracks for Free Download
Robotic Obscurities has rounded up a bunch of non-album tracks off of singles, splits, and demos from defunct band Breather Resist and made them available for free download. Use one of the following links below:

Maligno Finishes Tracking Album, Skolnick to Guest
Mexican doom metal band Maligno has released a short statement on their MySpace page about their upcoming release, which will be their third full-length album.
"We are officially done with the tracking of Maligno`s third album wich has the working title "TFD." As we mentioned before it is a concept album with a story connected by 9 songs which features collaborations by acclaimed Mexican guitar duo Rodrigo y Gabriela in an instrumental and Testament guitar legend Alex Skolnick in another track.
The album was recorded by MALIGNO at La Nave studios MTY and will be sent to mix to London in the next couple of days and mastering will be done in NY.

Metalcore Invades Baltimore on The Cool Tour
I recently got out to see the Cool Tour in Baltimore for a much-needed break. Featuring eight bands from every corner of the metalcore genre, one might be surprised to hear that this is the new tour by some of the Sounds of the Underground organizers, in it first year of the planned annual outing.
Let’s get one thing out of the way right away: With a name like “The Cool Tour” and a lineup full of metalcore bands, one might expect a bunch of straight/floppy haired teens in girl jeans as the audience. Luckily this was not the case, but it was clear that this tour is marketed to the younger and more trendy crowd. This was not your typical metal crowd, as short hair was the order of the day, but it was not what I expected either. While the name and first impressions might actually be a turn off to older and “true” metalheads, a closer look at the lineup reveals a few good reasons to check it out. I realized that if nothing else, headliners As I Lay Dying would put on a great show, and I also wanted to check out the much-hyped Between The Buried and Me as well as highly underrated Cancer Bats. If you are one who hates all things ‘core, don’t bother, however.
This was my second show at Sonar, and my impression of the venue since the first time was much improved. It seemed more organized and the security and staff were extremely helpful, the latter putting up with bands’ verbal jabs at them looking bored while encouraging the crowd to crowd surf to give them something to do.
While the entire venue was in use, the bands played only the main stage. Fortunately they had the process of switching bands down to a science and there was only a 10 to 15 minute gap between bands’ 30 minute sets for the most part.
Note: with a only passing familiarity with many of the bands, I am not able to name many songs or give set lists for this tour, even for the bands whose CDs I own. But read on for my account of the concert. More...

Korn Guitarist Munky Answers Fan Questions
Korn guitarist Munky took the time to answer some fan questions on a couple short videos. Munky answers questions about his favorite song to play live and what is was like being on the T.V. show South Park. Korn is currently on tour headlining the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival, and recently released their most recent studio album, "Korn III: Remember Who You Are."

Entrapment Streaming Instrumental Preview
Dutch act Entrapment, which describes itself as "zombifying soul-tearing" death metal, has issued the following brief comment about streaming a new instrumental preview track online: "Instrumental preview online! This fucker is a try out for the upcoming recordings. No details yet! Cheers!" You can check out the instrumental track at this location.
Draugnim Comments on Upcoming Album
The Finnish pagan black metal outfit Draugnim has released a short, yet descriptive, statement about their upcoming full length release.
"We are almost done with mixing the second Draugnim album.
The new album, which is produced by Ville Sorvali and Draugnim, contains seven tracks and will be released in October.
It is worth the wait."
This as-yet untitled effort will be a follow up to the band's excellent debut album "Northwind's Ire."
Archspire Issues Mini-Tour Recap
Archspire has checked in with the following recap of the band's recent mini-tour:
"Hey guys! Well, we made it home in one piece from our mini tour which started in Vancouver, and ended in Calgary. We had the time of our lives! Met some great people, checked out some killer bands, and I think it definitely made us a tighter band both musically, and personally. Thanks to everyone that came out to the shows, and for all those that didn't get a chance, keep an eye out for more show dates. In the meantime, check out Nylithia, Skullhammer, Akakor, and Fenrir's Thirst.
"We're playing with some killer bands next weekend at the legendary Rickshaw Theatre. Speaking of wicked shows, Spencer, Oli and myself went to The Funky Winkerbeans in Van, and checked out some sick bands: Kataplexis, Abriosis, Galgamex, and Makaria. Very wicked, Kataplexis is from Calgary, and they definitely sound like they are going places.
"We will hopefully be going into writing mode over the fall/winter, so expect some new material at shows as soon as spring 2011. We definitely want to do a full length with Stu at The Hive, so we need to get started on material ASAP. More...
Ender Cancels Upcoming Tour Dates
New Jersey's Ender has issued the following update about canceling all the band's previously scheduled August tour dates:
"August Tour Canceled! Due to issues beyond our control, The August tour with Dr.Acula, and Armor For The Broken has been canceled. We do not have exact reasoning as to why, but it is what it is. We are very sorry if you were planning on coming to see us at one of these shows. We now have the majority of August of (Unfortunately) but will be back out on the road soon!"

Napalm Death To Appear In Skins
British grindcore legends Napalm Death has announced that they are to appear in the forthcoming fifth series of British teen drama Skins, which is expected to hit screens sometime next year. The filming of a live Napalm Death performance will take place this Wednesday (July 28th) in Bristol. Although no details have been revealed about the episode, the band stated that the storyline is something that they feel fits well with their latest studio album, "Time Waits For No Slave."

Sunday Old School: Hellhammer
Very few bands are able to amass a cult following having never released a proper album. Fewer still can be credited with being a key influence in not one, but two genres. No ordinary metal band could achieve such praise, but then Hellhammer were not an ordinary band. The band formed under the name Hammerhead in the Swiss capital of Zurich by guitarist and vocalist Tom G. Fischer (aka Tom Warrior) and bassist Urs Sprenger (aka Steve Warrior,) along with drummer Pete Stratton and took influence from many British bands such as Black Sabbath, Venom, Angel Witch and Raven. Before long, Stratton had left the band, to be replaced by drummer Jörg Neubart (a.k.a. "Bruce Day") and the group changed their name to Hellhammer. This lineup of the band recorded two demos, "Death Fiend" and "Triumph Of Death," but only released the latter initially, sending it to record labels and magazines, finding little to no positive feedback at first.
After the recording of the first two demos, bassist Urs Sprenger left the group to be replaced by former Schizo bass player Martin Eric Ain. Ain and Fischer began working together to break away from the confines that they felt Hellhammer imposed on them, taking the band in a more radical direction and recording one more demo entitled, "Satanic Rites," before their first commercial release, the "Apocalyptic Raids" EP. The release was not very successful initially, but ultimately proved to be a huge influence on many metal bands, especially in the black and death metal genres. The band decided to call it a day three months after this release, with Fischer and Ain resurfacing in Celtic Frost, another hugely influential band.
Although Hellhammer was widely slated in their time, they have since been regarded as one of the most important bands in the history of extreme metal. Many bands have covered Hellhammer in the past, including such big names as Sepultura and Napalm Death, as well as Tom Fischer himself during his time with Apollyon Sun, the band he formed after the first Celtic Frost breakup and in 2008, a compilation album was released entitled, "Demon Entrails" which featured all three demos. Dark Funeral Parts With Singer
Swedish black metal outfit Dark Funeral has announced that they have parted ways with singer Emperor Magus Caligula (real name: Masse Broberg.) A message from Broberg reads as follows:
"I would like to inform all of our fans that on Saturday, August 21, at the Summer Breeze festival in Germany, I will be doing my last show with Dark Funeral.
"Naturally I have mixed feelings about this decision, but it is final!
