Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 25
Last week, we were forced to cancel the Metalunderground.com Official Podcast due to scheduling conflicts and a relative dearth of fascinating, frightening, or fabulous news. This week, we are back with a vengeance.
In an extended episode, co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) hold a series of intense discussions regarding three different, but equally captivating, current metal topics.
Up first: the seemingly endless recording/production/mixing woes of epic Finnish act Wintersun, which released “Time I” in 2012 after an eight year wait since the now-classic self-titled debut. Fans are poised with bated breath in anticipation of the upcoming sequel, but master songwriter (and admitted perfectionist) Jari Mäenpää just keeps running into delay after delay.
In a fit of frustration, Mäenpää recently took to social media to explain his technological and financial catch-22 vis-à-vis Nuclear Blast Records. Mike and Kevin share some mixed opinions of all this. What do you think?
Next, it’s onto more of the outrageously popular Slipknot, whose only necessary introduction is this: some love to love them, others love to hate them, but no one can fully categorize them (please don’t argue that last point - you’re wrong).
It’s been six years since the best-selling but not-entirely-fan-pleasing “All Hope Is Gone,” and after several dramatic episodes and periods of doubt over the band’s survival, Slipknot has finally unveiled new music from the upcoming fifth studio album: video single “The Negative One.”
We, like most people, think this new stuff carries strong echoes of “Iowa” (2001) and even “Slipknot” (1999). We don’t entirely agree on just how good that is, however. Listen in to find out who you think is right!
Finally, we launch into a detailed reaction to “The Flesh Prevails,” the new full-length from atmospheric, progressive, insert-your-sub-sub-genre death metallers Fallujah. The album is packed with idiosyncrasies both excellent and dubious. Listen in here to check out the full range of opinions, and don’t forget to subscribe via iTunes or RSS. Enjoy!

Bein Weinman Launches Party Smasher Inc.
Party Smasher Inc. has finally unveiled it's online destination here as a one-stop portal for musicians, photographers, illustrators, fashion designers, and industry mavericks of all stripes.
The shared principle that unites this otherwise diverse collection of contributors and curators is simple: self-determination. Party Smasher Inc. exists to enable likeminded cultural saboteurs to empower themselves with the DIY spirit.
“I was well into my twenties, with a college degree and a corporate job, playing music with no intention of generating money or some massive fanbase,” explains Party Smasher Inc. founder Ben Weinman, best known as the guitarist of The Dillinger Escape Plan. “Before I had even realized it, I was making 100% of my living creating art. How did this happen? Because we ignored the ‘rules.’ It wasn’t until I started living my artistic life with that mindset that I became a responsible creator – one who could move people through honest expression. And that is what Party Smasher Inc. is all about. We are here to celebrate the artists that are following their own path, undeterred by the trends.”
The following press release was also issued about the new site: "The battle-hardened creative industry collective behind Party Smasher is made up of visionaries from the full spectrum of artistic disciplines. All of them built their reputations with a combination of talent, presentation and workaholic fervor. More...

Scale The Summit To Miss Show Due To Injury
Scale The Summit has issued the following announcement about guitarist Chris Letchford injuring his finger:
"It's every guitar player's worst nightmare...but last night Chris had a pocket knife close on his fingertip cutting it all the way down to the bone while fixing a part of our merch booth sign.
"An ER visit and some stitches later, he'll be just fine, but unfortunately we're unable play the show in Denver, CO today and possibly a few more, time will tell.
"We need time for Chris' finger to heal and time to create backing tracks for several songs Chris can't play in the event that he still isn't healed enough when we resume the tour. This way, we can still present as much of a Scale the Summit show as we possibly can on the remaining dates, given the circumstances.
"We apologize profusely in advance to our fans and we hope to be back soon to make it up to you. Please go support our brothers in Monuments, Reflections, Erra and Glass Cloud! Please stay tuned here on our page for updates on the next few shows." More...
Unisonic Posts Making-Of Video
"Exceptional," the latest video from heavy metal supergroup Unisonic, made its official U.S. premiere last month. The song appears on the band's sophomore full-length, "Light Of Dawn", set to drop in North America next Tuesday, August 12th.
In celebration of its release, the band is pleased to unleash a special "Exceptional" making-of video which takes fans behind-the-scenes of the shoot. Check it out below.
Spring of 2014 saw Unisonic produce the twelve new tunes that make up "Light Of Dawn." Vocalist Michael Kiske comments:
"Our first world tour has really welded us together. The touring made us realize the importance of a congenial atmosphere for our creativity and how much I missed this team spirit over the past twenty years. Only musicians who feel really comfortable with each other can deliver their optimum performance."
Dennis Ward, a driving force within the unit, one of its main composers and, as on 2012's self-titled debut, its producer, agrees: "At the end of the day, you have to tour to get immediate fan reactions to your material. In this respect, the shows were very interesting and extremely encouraging. There's no doubt that they gave Unisonic nough energy to make working on Light Of Dawn child's play for everybody involved."
"Light Of Dawn" follows the band's "For The Kingdom" EP released digitally in North America in May. More...

The Body Politic Posts "Armature" Clip
Vancouver, BC six-piece powerhouse The Body Politic has teamed up with Blank TV for the premiere of a new lyric video for "Armature," taken from the "Egressor" EP due out on September 16th, 2014.
Drummer Spencer Bowman comments: "Armature’s lyrics illustrate the unravelling of the character’s mind, as a result of the extreme insecurities related to their physical appearance. It’s a song that hits close to home for us. Visually, the lyric video for Armature represents the anxiety and anger that the character feels. From a musical perspective, Armature is a good account of what people can expect from Egressor."
Taking it's name from a Clive Barker short story and shifting gears from jazz (which most of the members studied at Vancouver Island University) to progressive metal, the band combine poly-metric grooves, aggressive screams and soaring vocal melodies to push the boundaries of modern metal music. Nangilima Signs With Xtreem Music
The doomsters in Nangilima have inked a deal with Xtreem Music for the release of their debut album, which is due to come out during the next few months. Xtreem Music comments:
"Formed in 2013, this is more like an international band with members coming out from Sweden, Spain & Bulgaria.
"The band has released a couple of digital singles so far, showing a doom metal with some black elements, but after undergoing through some line-up changes, the band has definitely established their style into an atmospheric, dark and heavy Doom/Death in the vein of bands like Swallow The Sun, Novembers Doom, Saturnus, Inborn Suffering, Doom:VS, and the likes.
"Nangilima's debut album will be entitled 'The Dark Matter' and as soon as the cover artwork is finished, we'll reveal it along with track list and advance song as well as settling a definite release date for it."

Midnight Posts New Song
Midnight has premiered another track from upcoming album "No Mercy For Mayhem." Hear new track "Prowling Leather" on Metal Hammer Norway's website here.
"No Mercy for Mayhem" is set for international release on August 19th through Hells Headbangers. The label comments:
"Hotter than Hell in the metal/punk underworld, Midnight's debut album, Satanic Royalty, became an instant classic upon its release in 2011. Now, with anticipation at a fever pitch, the hooded demons return with the even better No Mercy for Mayhem.
"Whereas Satanic Royalty was the culmination of nearly a decade's worth of hard slogging in the underground, No Mercy for Mayhem is an intensification of everything its predecessor seemingly perfected: the hooks even more anthemic, the power more piledriving, the dirt dirtier, the sum effect being absolute BLACKOUT.
"Really, there's no current band who are able to mainline classic heavy metal, hard-charging punk rock, and grimy rock 'n' roll quite like Midnight can, and No Mercy for Mayhem is studded-leather, 10-track proof that mainman Athenar and crew are at the top of their game and bow to no one."
The new album's track listing is as follows:
1. Penetratal Curse
2. Evil Like A Knife

Indestructible Noise Command Post Studio Update
Connecticut metal act Indestructible Noise Command (I.N.C.) recently announced signing to Ferocious Records (an affiliate of CDS Records, LLC), along with the release announcement for the new album "Black Hearse Serenade." I.N.C. has followed this up with an in-studio video update, which can be viewed below. The album is set for release this October.
"Black Hearse Serenade" was recorded during the summer of 2013 and marks a substantial step forward for I.N.C., while also representing a bit of a departure from the sound they’ve been recognized for in the past. Fans should expect the unexpected with "Black Hearse Serenade," as each song has its own, unique DNA. I.N.C. has broken out of the thrash box with this album, and hopes to bring their existing fans along for the ride.
"Musically, we opened up to trying new things, and found that we actually enjoy branching out,” states lead guitarist Erik Barath. “These new experiences made this album more exciting than any other.”
The bulk of "Black Hearse Serenade" was recorded at Dexters Lab Recording, the studio owned and operated by Nick Bellmore (otherwise known as Nicholas T. Rage from Toxic Holocaust, who personally engineered and mixed the album). All of Erik Barath’s lead guitars and piano/keyboard parts were recorded in Cyprus with Philip Zilfo. "Black Hearse Serenade" was then mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering.
Announcements regarding track listing, album art and more on the concept is expected soon. Check out the studio update here: More...

A Sound Of Thunder Releases Details On New Album
D.C. area metal act A Sound of Thunder will release its fourth full-length album "The Lesser Key of Solomon" on September 9th worldwide via the band's own Mad Neptune Records. The album was produced by RIAA multi-platinum-awarded producer Kevin '131' Gutierrez (While Heaven Wept, Raven, Shinedown). The heavy riff-laden songs are complex yet instantly catchy, featuring razor-sharp musicianship and the lung-busting performances of powerhouse classically-trained vocalist Nina Osegueda.
"If your erection lasts longer than four hours, you probably listened to our new album. Also, you're welcome" jokes Osegueda. "On a serious note, this album is our best work to date. The songwriting and performances from the band are on another level. The album was a joy to make and that comes through in the final recording."
Hot off the 2013 release of "Time's Arrow" (see review here), the band's best-selling and best reviewed release to date, A Sound of Thunder was brimming with confidence and eager to get back into the recording studio. With too many musical ideas for just one album, the band selected only its darkest and most atmospheric material for "The Lesser Key of Solomon." The result is an ominous collection of songs united by supernatural themes. The album represents the fulfillment of a promise to A Sound of Thunder's fans, known as the "Legion of Thunder", who funded the album via the Kickstarter crowd-funding platform in the autumn of 2013, raising over $23,000.
"The Lesser Key of Solomon" running time of 61 minutes, features 10 of A Sound of Thunder's most intense yet nuanced songs, exploring territory which is simultaneously heavier and more atmospheric than ever before. The steel-armored wail of prodigal vocalist Nina Osegueda (called by some "the lovechild of Rob Halford and Bruce Dickinson") tops off deft performances by a band that knows how to deliver the goods. From the demonic fire of "Udoroth", to the crushing Dio-esque "Master of Pain", to the sweeping scope and dark theatricality of "Elijah", A Sound of Thunder delivers a timeless album full of metal classics.
“The Lesser Key Of Solomon” available as a digital download, compact disc, and limited deluxe vinyl-book format. The cover art, shown below, as well as all the pieces contained in the deluxe edition and CD booklets were created by Dusan Markovic.
The track listing for the album is:
1. Nexus Of Realities
2. Udoroth
3. Fortune Teller
4. The Boy Who Could Fly
5. Elijah
6. Master Of Pain
7. Blood From The Mummy’s Tomb

Orphaned Land Posts "Let The Truce Be Known" Video
Israeli symphonic metal act Orphaned Land released a new music video for the track "Let the Truce Be Known." The song appears on the 2013 release "All Is One" (see review here).
The video was directed and edited by Vadim Mechona and produced by Yan Lubin. "Let The Truce Be Known" is one Orphaned Lands favorite songs ever. The lyrics and the story are based on the World War I's "Christmas Truce". However, the story seems to resonate these days more than ever.
Singer Kobi Farhi has shared these thoughts:
"The tragedies we see in the Middle East are down to the fact that no negotiations, nor peace conventions, will ever help us achieve peace as long as hate, revenge, and self-victimization are used as excuses for war.
"The majority of the Middle East's population suffers from a terrible education system; it's actually a worldwide phenomenon. Our first childhood toys are always toy guns. These childhood moments are the most important, when our personality is shaped, and we are subconsciously preparing ourselves for the use of weapons, for wars, for enemies. Add politics and media systems to the equation and you'll get a chaotic loop that never ends. Is it in our nature to fight? Yeah it is, but we can educate ourselves to hold different values.
"- Imagine a world where we have more education and less economical conventions.
"- Imagine a world where all the religious leaders, the ones who claim they are Ambassadors of God, will gather as one and not leave the room, until as one unified voice they declare that war is the most hated act in the eyes of God. Why aren't they doing this already?
"- Imagine a new education system, a one that way before teaching us about the bloody history of humanity, we will learn about the value of life, we will learn that life is sacred and that killing is a worldwide taboo. We will also learn about how to have a dialogue, how to talk, how to listen to each other. It seems to be more important than Mathematics for the moment.
"-Imagine if we were brought up believing that going to war and killing someone is forbidden, the same way that it's wrong to have sex with someone in our family. That's a deliberately extreme example, but just imagine the same first reaction every human will have to the idea of sex with a sibling, and imagine them reacting the same way for killing someone or going to war.
"-Children of the Middle East should play football, play in bands, grow up in a safe city. They shouldn't run away from rockets, bombs and all the irresponsible wars that we, the adult ones, bring to them from their birth up until the moment they become warriors themselves. More...
