Get a bunch of amped up metal heads into an enclosed space and shenanigans are bound to happen, but add alcohol to the mix and you've got a recipe for pit craziness.
For this week's look at Pit Stories from metal bands across the globe, Crimson Shadows bassist Morgan Rider shares this tale of a festival getting shut down when the crowd turns on an unruly fan:
I have been playing shows the entirety of my adult and teenage life. I have seen just about as much crazy shit at concerts I have attended as the next guy has too. But actually PLAYING the show gives you that vantage point on the crowd and the pit that being a part of the crowd does not provide. Above all, some of the most insane crowds I have ever seen have been in our home country of Canada. I don't know if it's in the water or the poutine, but I personally think it may be the fact that Canada is one of the less-hit markets in the world for metal. The crowds here NEED their fix of metal!
One instance I can recall comes from another band I play in. We were playing an outdoor festival in Ontario right next to the lake and we were one of maybe 10-12 bands. I remember vaguely as we were gearing up to step up on stage, a roamer happened into our backstage area and started to harass our guitar player at the time that we had better play Lynyrd Skynyrd or Pink Floyd or he'd stab us in the throat or something to that degree. We told him to fuck off so we could get ready to play. And yes, this is the part where he losses his shit and attacks our guitarist who he was previously harassing. The quick tussle ended up in them both being bloody-nosed, bruised and covered in dirt, but otherwise OK! We kicked the random guy out of the backstage area and we moved onto the stage to perform. We didn't really hear him shouting at us about how he was going to round up his boys and come back for us though. Onward the show!
And this is where it gets interesting. We were maybe 3-4 songs into our set; we were enjoying the awesomely large-ish and crazy crowd, the cold Canadian beer and the feel of the breeze coming off the lake when Cpl. McTrailerpark and Company come drunkenly stumbling up into the festival grounds. I guess the guy originally did not realize we were the next performing band, so he went straight for the first long-haired and bearded fellow he happened across and a fight broke out immediately. Of course, we saw everything that was going on, so we shouted at someone to break the fight up before it got even further out of control. Now I have never seen this happen, except if a soccer team loses in Brazil or a bunch of fans streak across a football stadium, but the ENTIRE crowd B-lined and went straight for the guy and his buddies!
The whole crowd swarmed these guys and totally gang-beat them. Of course we did not stop playing. Within 5 minutes, ambulances, police cars and a paddy wagon all arrived with an even larger crowd of on-lookers. Eventually, the police came on stage and stopped us from playing and stopped the entire festival.More...
Graf Orlock has returned with a new seven-inch, "Trailer," which is the band's first new music since 2012's "Los Angeles" EP.
Noisey is now streaming "A Decent Proposal in a Shitty Alley," a track off "Trailer," which can be heard in the player provided below.
Graf Orlock's Hollywood obsession runs deep – all lyrics, song titles, and artwork are derived from big screen hits and misses of the '80s and '90s, which the band feels doubles as social commentary. "Looking at issues through the lens of film... shows how fucked up things are," guitarist Jason Schmidt has stated.
The songs on "Trailer" will also appear on Graf Orlock's next LP, "Crime Traveler," in the works now for a Fall release. You can also catch the band live:

UK drone/doom duo Ommadon today drops the sonically devastating new full-length, "V," stateside via Domestic Genocide Records.
"V" was executed and recorded live by Ommadon on The Hill Of Maud in the Scottish Highlands over the Winter of 2012/2013. Split across four sides of vinyl, the 180 gram double LP was mastered by Billy Anderson (Sleep, Eyehategod, High On Fire).
Bass player Carl from U.K. metal band Schemata Theory has issued the following announcement about leaving the group:
"Sad to announce that I have decided to part ways with the band. This band, in one form or another has been a massive part of my life for the last 10 years, however it is now time for me to move on.
"There is no one reason I can give for this decision, other than to cite changes in personal circumstances and differing opinions in the direction of the band. I can't say what this means for the future for Schemata Theory but I wish them the best of luck.
"Thank you to everyone who has supported us over the last 10 years from our beginnings as Down Within to our most recent release. Thanks to anyone who came to any of shows over that time, bought any of our CDs or shirts, or took the time to listen to us, share our music with friends, leave us a comment on here, or twitter, on one of videos on YouTube, or even MySpace back in the day!
"The positive responses we've received over this time has been overwhelming and I'm incredibly grateful that I can leave now with my head held high, proud of everything we've achieved through the years." More...

Cerebellion has checked in with the following announcement about reuniting with Joe Arnold and recording new material:
"Greetings from Eck’s Studio in sunny Corona, CA. We wanted to give all of you a brief update on where we are at with recording 'Regeneration' thus far.
"As of right now drums and bass have both been completed. Jimmy came in and in usual fashion destroyed each song with pinpoint accuracy. We are all convinced he is not human and is some sort of master drum being from another planet.
"Bass went smoothly as well with Marc laying down some heavy grooves and some bowel shaking lows. We may need to place one of those Olestra warnings on the album 'May cause loose stools.'
"The guitars are about 90% complete. John has been busy putting down more delicious layers than the finest of cakes and he just has to add the icing (leads).
"As for vocals, Joe Arnold, who recently rejoined Cerebellion, is scheduled to start recording early next week which keeps us on time for delivering the final product in Fall." More...
U.K. outfit Absolva has issued the following statement about lineup changes and upcoming live shows:
"With sincere regret we have to announce that Dan Bate has left Absolva with immediate effect. This situation had not been anticipated but has been discussed in detail & sadly we've accepted Dan's explanation that he feels unable to commit himself 100% to the band going forward & therefore has no choice but to reluctantly give up his position as bassist.
"Although we're more than a little shocked at this turn of events, the situation has been entirely amicable & we have nothing but good to say about Dan & his period with the band. The past 2 years have seen him working hard, playing some incredible shows & we've had many laughs together where his wit & humour have been especially welcome during long hours on the road. In this period he's grown significantly as a musician.
"We're very sad to see him depart & we thank him wholeheartedly for all his contribution to the music & work of Absolva. We wish Dan every success & good fortune with all that he does in future.
"Regarding the future for Absolva, it'll come as no surprise to many of you that Luke Appleton will be stepping in as bassist on the forthcoming tour dates both in Scotland & in Europe. Anyone interested in an audition for the full-time position as bassist should email email@example.com. Thanks for your continued incredible support. See you out there! More...

By the end of 2012, despite the official announcement of a new album, the fate of Megaton Leviathan was positioned beneath a very precariously dangled sword.
Circumstance and internal conflict nearly saw the band's next major release a specter with no corporeal form. However, after a redoubling of effort, a reshuffling of the deck and some inevitable missteps along the way, Megaton Leviathan's second full length album, "Past 21: Beyond The Arctic Cell," has emerged from the chaos of its birth pains.
The album was mixed by Mort Subite (V.I.I.R.L., Alfheimr, Benighted in Sodom live) and will be released via Seventh Rule Recordings on September 9th, 2014. The track listing is as follows:
1. Past 21
2. The Foolish Man

With Get This Right Records about to release the final tracks recorded by defunct band Crucified via the posthumous "Dead Of Sleep" 7", one of the four anthems the EP bears has been set loose upon the public.
Check out the track "Conduit" at Stereokiller.com here. "Dead Of Sleep" will see vinyl and digital release on September 9th, 2014 via Get This Right Records. The following press release w as also issued about the band:
"Crucified's volatile delivery of thrash and hardcore with infectious pick-up parts and monstrous breakdowns draws elements of Ringworm, All Out War, Catharsis, Gehenna and Merauder together, and saw the band make an instant impact on the hardcore scene.
"Their 2008 debut was later released as a split with California's No Truce on Escapist Records, followed by a split with Steel Nation in 2009 on Double Or Nothing Records who also released their Coldest Winter LP in 2010. In May of 2011, Crucified entered the studio for one last session, yet decided to call it a day before the material saw release.
"Now, three years after their demise, these seemingly lost tracks will be available for the first time as the Dead Of Sleep EP. Recorded, engineered, mixed and mastered by Jack Shirley at The Atomic Garden Studios in Palo Alto, California, this concise and ferocious EP perfectly displays Crucified's slick and lethal style to both previous fans and new, and is a testament of their brief but relevant lifespan as a band." This October, Crucial Blast Records will officially re-release "Spectre Music Of An Antiquary," the out-of-print 2012 album from U.K. ambient/black/noise metal entity Emit. The label comments:
"A full-length collection of murky ambiance, deranged '80s-style synthesizer-driven, ritualistic black drift, and stranger sound forays into black noise, 'Spectre Music Of An Antiquary' was first released as an extremely limited cassette on Glorious North, marking the first new material from Emit in over five years.
"This British outfit has been creating their unique brand of experimental blackened delirium since the late 1990s, branching out of a low-fi UK black metal band called Ante Cryst. With Emit, the members began to explore a creepy, synth-heavy sound that was unmistakably descended from black metal but supremely more deformed, combining harsh electronic noise, horror-movie soundtrack atmospherics, droning keyboards, wrecked and fractured black metal guitars, and bizarre vocals that would often push the collective's music into a strange realm of hallucinatory, ghastly psychedelia.
"Though on 'Spectre Music Of An Antiquary,' Emit's sound has morphed into something that more resembles some mutated, primitive '80s darkwave being completely taken over by malevolent spirits, with eerie electronic drones and distant moaning vocals often taking over; very different from past recordings, though no less weird or phantasmagoric. And as with other offerings, Spectre is concerned more with the occult lore and hidden history of the British Isles than Satanism or goat worship or any of the other over-used black metal tropes, which all serves to enhance the wraithlike vibe of these songs. Protest The Hero has released a video for "Mist," which can be seen below, and the band comments:
"After much ado, we are proud to finally premier our official video for 'Mist.' We made two trips back and forth to Newfoundland to make this one happen and we are really happy with how it turned out. As usual, we had too much footage to cram into just 4 minutes, so we made it longer!
"We hope you can take a minute to watch and learn about one of our favourite places on earth.
What better place to house the video than our brand new website is going to be a place where we can post whatever we want free of the worry that tons of you wont get it in your fb feeds...
"We have lots of stuff still to add, but it's a good start eh? Enjoy!" More...

The Haunted's Ola Englund (guitars) comments: "'Time (Will Not Heal)' is one of those songs that came together naturally and wrote itself. Hang The Bastard and Century Media have teamed up with Noisey to reveal the first new video from forthcoming album "Sex In The Seventh Circle," featuring psychedelic visuals, porn, Satanic imagery and decidedly old school editing techniques (also filmed entirely on VHS). Check out the clip below.
The album will be released on September 22nd in Europe and on October 14th in North America via Century Media Records. "Sex In The Seventh Circle" is the first single to be lifted from its namesake album and a testament to the gigantic sound forged on this record by the 'Bastard.
The band comments: "Sex In The Seventh Circle is the first new song that people will hear from the new album. We gave everyone a taste at the start of the year with Sweet Mother but we feel that we have gone even further into the direction we genuinely wanted this band to go. The video alongside the music is something we are equally proud of and thanks to the vision of Chris Hugall, we have achieved what we wanted from the footage. A band should be allowed to take chances and risks in the music they write. To be able to have selfish freedom in how they create. We hope everyone enjoys what we have spent a long time creating. It means a lot to us." More...

Modern death metal band Abysmal Dawn returns with a massive display of refined brutality on fourth full-length "Obsolescence."
"Obsolescence" will be released October 28th in North America (UK/World October 27th and Germany/Benelux/Finland on October 24th) via Relapse Records. Pre-orders for Obsolescence will be available shortly, with the album out in CD, LP and digital formats.
The album was produced by Mike Bear at Artisan Road and mixed and mastered by John Haddad at Trench Studios. Today the artwork by Par Oloffson (The Faceless, Spawn of Possession) and the track listing for "Obsolescence" have been revealed and can be seen below. Front man Charles Elliott comments:
"Three years have passed since the release of 'Leveling the Plane of Existence', and it's high-time we released another slab of epic, bludgeoning death metal. This album took over a year and a half to come to fruition between writing and recording, and I think the blood sweat and tears definitely show in the final work of art.
"The title of the record is inspired by the term 'planned obsolescence,' and is applied to all of mankind. In business terms, it means to manufacture a product that's made to breakdown after a certain amount of time, so that it can be replaced. People. Societies, governments and religions all have an expiration date for their usefulness in this world; they break down and are replaced just like any other commodity. If you follow the band, you know that dehumanization is a running theme with us, and you'll be relieved to know we aren't singing about rainbows, puppies and the girl next-door on this one.
"I also have to say, it was a great pleasure of mine to have our friend and amazing guitarist, Christian Muenzer, lay down a guest solo on a track. My teenage guitar hero Bobby Koelble shreds on a song as well, making it the only metal album I can think of that he played on since 'Symbolic'! That in itself is a huge honor for me.
"We even did a cover song of Dissection's 'Night's Blood' that I think everyone will enjoy. We tried hard to obtain the integrity and vibe of the original and I think we achieved that. It's the first cover we ever recorded. So we made sure we did it right! More...

Atlanta progressive metal act Halcyon Way premiered the new track "World Comes Undone" over at Guitar World.com at this location (also in the player below). The song appears on the upcoming new album "Conquer," which is out on August 19th in North America via Nightmare Records, and September 19th in Europe via Massacre Records. A review for the album can be found over at this location.
Guitarist Jon Bodan commented on the track: "'World Comes Undone' is one of my favorite tracks on 'Conquer.' To me, it’s one of the riffier tracks, and it hits all of the high points we’re known for — the thrashy riffs, lots of nice groove changes, a big chorus and lots of sexy vocal harmonies, plus a tasty guitar solo.
"The intro riff has a nice thrashy feel, with some diminished intervals and harmonies. When the verse kicks in, it goes into a Pantera sort of groove, and the guitar riff is deep in the pocket but has a cool, technical streak.
"The chorus has a nice groove as well; it’s good and catchy, and it has some interesting layers to it. Once you get to the bridge, we modified the intro riff a bit to give it more of a groove, and the solo is very vocal and slinky. I like to make sure my solos take you somewhere and give you some melody you can latch onto but have them move and build up."
The track listing for "Conquer" is:
2. Web Of Lies (see music video)
3. Conceived In Torment
4. Home (see lyric video)

The songs on "Sonic Child" are describes as "traditional and versatile, have strong riffs and driving drums, are affected by a well-tempered influence of the blues, with a carefully selected degree of hardness at any time." Frontman Nick van Delft tells tales of little adventures and grand gestures, some of which seems to be located in the desert of Arizona ("Penny And The Dead Horse"), whereas others seem to be in the cotton fields on the banks of the Mississippi River ("Rock Bottom Blues"). Zodiac showcases the best statement on their artistic visions at the very end: "just music."

Swedish death metal trio Stench will release the sophomore album entitled "Venture" on the September 26th in Europe and October 7th in North America via Agonia Records. The follow-up to the band's debut opus "In Putrescence" has been in the making since 2010 and along with the artwork, "has accumulated enough power to swing ones senses to the sky," says the band. The artwork - which is an important factor to the trio's music - was crafted by Necromantic Art (Tribulation, Necrovation, Venenum, Decomposed) and can be seen below.
"Venture" features seven brand new songs reminiscent of horror infected old-school death metal, but with a otherworldly vibe which prudently creeps into the music and makes it even more adventurous. At times harmonious and melodic, at times dreadful and rowdy - the Swedes play their own game, picturing fear, anxiety and risk with their instruments.
Jonathan Hultén (guitars) commented: "'Venture' is a journey from the rawest, most monotonous cellar-darkness up to a desolate mountain top, from which you are thrown into the abyss below in a castanedian manner. If only but for a moment or even throughout the whole 38 minutes, be prepared to enter the other world.
"For four years we have been boiling down our material to the bone in pursuit of the essence of this type of music. Our conclusion is that the simple and repetitive riffing is holding the key, and is enhanced by more or less subtle choirs and sound textures. Primitive, yet atmospheric."
The album was recorded in Necromorbus Studio (Watain, Portrait) in Stockholm, Sweden. It will be available in a digipack CD, digitally and in a 12" vinyl (black, limited picture disc and a special colour version).
The track list is:
2. The Vast
