Interview

Abbath Comments on Debut, Solo Recording

Immortal will always be a classic Norwegian black metal band. From the icy riffs and artic-wind-swept lyrics to Abbath’s yeti calls to the band’s warrior imagery, few black metal artists emulate the mighty Immortal. Their reach goes beyond merely the realms of black metal. There is a beer company called Jester King that produces a Black Metal Stout. The artwork depicts a black metaller who curiously looks like Abbath, as well as the title of the beer, “Suds of Northern Darkness,” which is a parody of the Immortal album “Sons of Northern Darkness.” Also, there are a million memes on the Internet including the one showing Immortal with Grumpy the Cat, who also resembles Abbath’s face paint in it’s facial fur.

Immortal remains near the top of the black metal hordes, but no one knows where the group goes from here. Abbath is no longer with them, so his trademark looks, voice and guitar are no longer present. Abbath has moved on to what he feels is a step up in his career. At the beginning of the year, he released his debut solo album. The self-titled effort is by no means a step away from Immortal. Abbath has a song writing style that is legendary, one that he continues with this recording. Blasting drums via Creature and creative bass lines support Olve Eikemo’s (Abbath) subterranean shrieks and icy guitar tones. Those who mourn the loss of Abbath in Immortal, mourn no longer.

Abbath is currently touring around the U.S. as part of the Decibel Magazine tour with High on Fire, Skeletonwitch and Tribulation. Metalunderground.com caught up with Abbath before he took the stage in Austin, Texas to talk about leaving Immortal, recording the self-titled record and his thoughts on the future of his solo project. Ensiferum Parts With Keyboardist Emmi

Ensiferum has issued the following announcement about parting ways with keyboardist Emmi Silvennoinen:

"Many fans have asked in recent times where Emmi is at our shows. We can now confirm that due to family reasons, she will be stepping aside from keyboard duties, with Netta Skog continuing as a permanent member of Ensiferum, bringing her electric accordion to the stage. We hope that you will join us in thanking Emmi for her many years of hard work and also in celebrating Netta's induction to the Ensiferum family! We look forward to seeing you all on the road!"

Emmi had this to say: “Many of you have probably noticed that during the last year I have missed lots of gigs and now it's time to put an end to all rumours. For family reasons, I have to step aside from Ensiferum. It's been an amazing 9 years, I have learned and seen so much all over the world. This decision was not made lightly! But every cloud has its silver lining and I couldn't be any happier that my dear friend Netta will take my place in the band. I want to thank our fans around the world, everyone I met on the road and of course the guys in the band. There is no bad blood between us and I will always remain a part of the Ensiferum family. Life goes on! Tättädädää!”

Netta also comments: “With joy and respect, I hop in my lovely friend Emmi's shoes. I've had time of my life during the last year with the Ensiferum guys and I'm thrilled about the upcoming tours, composing new material and all awesomeness that future will bring! Love you all!” More...

Novembre Streaming Full New Album

Novembre, Italy's atmospheric death/doom metal purveyor, is now streaming upcoming seventh studio album "URSA" in full before it releases tomorrow on Peaceville. Listen in below, and for more details, be sure to catch our interview with the band here.

"URSA" is still available to pre-order on CD and LP from the Peaceville webstore. Band member Carmelo Orlando commented:

"This album is a very important step in my life. It got me closer to what some may call 'maturity.' I've been able to delve even deeper into the chasm of the subconscious and unearth gems I didn't think existed. Lyrically and conceptually I explored new shores. I moved my ever-inwards headlights, and for the first time I dared to point them outwards, against the squalor of this Orwellian apocalypse we're committing towards the Earth and its sons, on a daily basis, in quasi-total indifference." Byzantine Signs With Metal Blade

West Virginian groove metal outfit Byzantine has signed a worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records. After releasing music independently over the last three years, the quartet is ready to unleash a sixth, currently-untitled album in early 2017 via this new label home.

Front-man, Chris "OJ" Ojeda had this to say about the band's recent signing: "For the last few albums, we have operated outside the fringes of the music community by necessity. I had almost lost hope that we would ever have the chance to showcase our music to the world on a bigger stage. With the help of Brian Slagel and Metal Blade Records, we feel like Byzantine has been given a 2nd chance to make our 1st impression. We are absolutely thrilled at the opportunity to share our brand of heavy music with the world on the world's best metal label!"

Byzantine was formed in 2000 by vocalist/guitarist Chris Ojeda and former guitarist Tony Rohrbough. After releasing three albums via Prosthetic Records, touring with Lamb of God, playing the main stage of New England Metal and Hardcore Festival, and receiving much praise from fans and media alike, the band abruptly called it quits in early 2008 - but it wasn't long before the metal community demanded a return.

In 2012, a reinvigorated Byzantine reunited with the band's seminal line-up, and consequently delivered two highly praised albums, which were crowd-funded through Kickstarter and Pledge Music. Now, after having been an independent artist since 2013, Ojeda and his crew are back with a new record deal, poised to dominate the scene once again. More...

The Bendal Interlude Premieres Full New Album

We're only one single day away now from the official release of The Bendal Interlude's "Reign of the Unblinking Eye," due to drop Friday, April 1st via Blow Bow Records.

Some of you simply can't wait that long to hear this psychedelic thrash/sludge mixup though, and we don't blame you! Today we're giving you the chance to hear all of "Reign of the Unblinking Eye" a full 24 hours in advance of the release - listen in below.

After spinning these nine sick new tracks from the U.K. band, there's still time to pre-order the album through Black Bow here. Guitarist Stu Taylor also comments:

"After releasing four EPs through Crack Zombie Records, we decided it was high time to write a full LP containing full-bodied tracks the listener could sink their teeth into. We took a shift in direction when writing for the album 'Reign of The Unblinking Eye.' The songs are much more elaborate and have a lot more going on sound-wise than previous releases. We played with time signatures, guitar harmonies, key changes, even laying down a 10-part resonator guitar part. It is by far the heaviest but also most dynamic thing we’ve written to date.

"Previously, lyrical content has been more of an abstract collection of ideas and imagery based around loose themes. With this offering, a more autobiographical approach has been taken with some songs, with themes including time spent with partial face paralysis, a tendency to lose things, favourite tapestry, bare-hand toilet unblocking, plus the usual collection of vaguely connected lists of obscenities. We wanted to write a dynamic LP that had melody and atmosphere through use of guitar solos and cinematic samples, whilst maintaining solid, heavy groove." More...
