1985-1995: The Golden Age of Death Metal

Death should be credited with creating death metal, at least the old school style we recognize now, as they birthed the infamous Tampa, Florida sound. Bands such as Autopsy and Obituary—two of the forerunners—would not exist without Death. Death is not the true father of death metal, though. That distinction goes to Possessed. The California Bay Area group not only played a style of brutal, vicious metal, with loads of Satanic imagery, they also coined the term “death metal” on the “Seven Churches” album.

Around 1985, albums similar to “Slowly We Rot” (Obituary) and “Mental Funeral” (Autopsy) simply did not exist. Thrash was the fasted, craziest music around. Of course Possessed has already been mentioned, but the influence of Slayer, who obviously influenced Possessed, can not be under recognized. Where Possessed was different was they used a rougher production. Dark Angel, whose drummer, Gene Hoglan, would go on to be one of the most heralded drummers in the metal biz, certainly showed a good dose of Slayer in their sound. In the beginning, Slayer was nothing more than a faster, nefarious, more solo-oriented Venom protégé. More...

After The Burial Posts "Collapse" Video

After The Burial, celebrating chart debuts for new album, "Dig Deep," today releases a video for “Collapse." The nine-song album landed at #1 on the Billboard Top Hard Music and Independent Album charts as well as #18 on the Top Current Album chart and #50 on the Top 200.

The album title is a nod to the circumstances surrounding this album, one that found the five-piece moving on without founding member Justin Lowe after his suicide in July.

“We coped as well as we could have—we still are,” admits singer Anthony Notarmaso. “Losing someone isn’t easy, and we all dealt with it in our own way. I was angry and sad at the same time. I didn’t know how to feel, and it took time to accept that he really was gone. After the dust settled, we got on the phone to see where we stood. To be honest, we thought about giving up. We asked ourselves if it was right to go on without him, or maybe if it was time to start a new band together. In the end, we felt like we couldn’t let what beat him beat us. That would’ve been even more tragic, and we felt like he wouldn’t have wanted us to stop. I know I wouldn’t have.”

“When you think you don’t have anything left in you, you have to rely on that inner strength,” adds guitar player Trent Hafdahl. “That’s where we are as a band. So many things beyond our control went wrong, but we started to dig deep as brothers.”

New album "Dig Deep" was recorded at Graphic Nature Audio in New Jersey with producer Will Putney (The Amity Affliction, Upon A Burning Body). The album is the first where the band partnered with a producer. “We had not tried it before,” explains Hafdahl. “It felt like a fresh idea to do something new. We were still running the show obviously, but he brought a good ear for tone and melody. He encouraged us to explore more. To have that perspective was helpful.” More...

Rotten Sound Needs More "Cannon Fodder"

Finnish grindcore powerhouse Rotten Sound has unleashed another new track from upcoming full-length "Abuse to Suffer." Check out "Cannon Fodder" below. Regarding the new track, Rotten Sound vocalist Keijo Niinima comments:

"The song starts with Napalm Death-style mid-tempo groovy riff, which made me think that the vocals must begin immediately with low Barney style of grunting. The rest of the song is probably more Rotten Sound with dissonant riffs by Sami, up tempo blasting and heavy mid part. Somehow this song stood out to me with the extreme tempo-changes and stop'n'go-style when it really gets going. Lyrics are pretty straight-forward text about soldiers, who are forced to do whatever is being ordered from above."

The band's first new record in five years, "Abuse to Suffer" will be released by Season of Mist in North America on March 25th. The full track listing consists of:

1. Lazy Asses
2. Intellect
3. Fear of Shadows

Wisconsin Bands Unite Against Scott Walker

A group of local punk, hardcore, metal and indie musicians have teamed up in protest against governor Scott Walker.

Led by DJ Hostettler (of IfIHadAHiFi) and Anthony Webber (of Heavy Hand), the bands have gathered together to release "Unintimindated: Wisconsin Musicians against Scott Walker," a compilation CD/DVD that will raise funds for issues that Governor Walker reportedly detests. The compilation will also include an old-school cut-and-paste zine, and all proceeds will go to soup kitchens and Planned Parenthood.

DJ said about the compilation: "We've worked on this project for about a year now, hatching our scheme in February 2015 and moving from gauging interest in the bands, to securing a studio, to convincing an absolute murderer's row of musicians, engineers, cameramen, editors, and gruntworkers to donate their time to a project that, in today's political environment in Wisconsin, runs the rest of being little more than a cathartic scream into the wilderness. But hopefully it'll be more than that.

"If this collection of songs can raise money for some solid causes that help those whom Scott Walker refuses to help, then this is a success. If this collection of songs provides a soundtrack for a political revolution in Wisconsin that leads to motivated progressives taking back our state from the tyranny of the rich and power-mad, then holy shit, that's amazing. But at the very least, we will have provided a document of artistic work that will hopefully stand for generations and show Wisconsin, the country, and the world, that no, not everyone in Wisconsin was satisfied to sit and let Scott Walker and his corporate overlords ruin our state. Criminal Releases New Lyric Video

Set to release new album, "Fear Itself," next week (March 11th) via Metal Blade Records worldwide, Anglo-Chilean thrashers Criminal have now launched a lyric video for the track "Animals To Gods" online.

Criminal's Anton Reisenegger (vocals/guitar) comments: "This song has been one of our favourites since we wrote it. It's got many different sections, yet it flows like a stream of lava. The lyrics are about the human species reaching the pinnacle of evolution and what a one-way street that means in terms of the environment and other species.

"It's based on the book 'Sapiens: A Brief History of Mankind' by Yuval Noah Harari, and I do realize it is unusual to base a song on a scientific book, but it was a real eye-opener for me when I read it, and I can only recommend it to anyone remotely concerned about the future of life on our planet.

"Despite the heavy subject matter, I don't think the lyrics are too heady or pretentious, but rather menacing and apocalyptic. Costin [Chioreanu, the artist also responsible for the album cover] did an absolutely fantastic job in translating the words and vibe of the song into images. He did it in record time as well, and we didn't ask him to change anything when we first saw it, as we thought it was absolutely perfect." More...

Acheron To Stop Releasing Albums

Vincent Crowley from Acheron just issued this announcement online about switching gears to only releasing EPs and being a live band:

"After 28 years of releasing Acheron music, I have decided that Acheron will no longer be releasing anymore full length albums. Our musical catalog is very big and I feel I have put out enough quality work under the Acheron name that will keep the fires of Hell burning. The reality is when you have been around for so long you can release a fucking masterpiece and people will almost always think your older stuff is still better. I don’t agree, but I understand their nostalgic reasons.

"So from now on, Acheron will be more or less a live band. I have a great line-up and the energy they project is amazing. We plan to be changing up the setlist more often and adding more old songs to it. There will not be any full blown tours. Instead, Acheron will now only play shows that are worth while and festivals. Officium Triste Signs With Transcending Obscurity

Dutch doom metal legends, Officium Triste, featuring The 11th Hour vocalist Pim Blankenstein, have officially signed to Transcending Obscurity Records.

The band commented: "We have been working on a follow-up to ‘Mors Viri’ for a while now. Even when we are still in the process of writing new material we are more than pleased Kunal and Transcending Obscurity offered to work with us on the release of our next album. It’s exciting to work with a label based in India. This only shows that boundaries mean nothing in the world of heavy metal. Kunal already proved to us he is a hard-working, dedicated guy. Add persistent to that as well. Kunal really did his best to reel us in and that determination is exactly what we need from a label. We are looking forward working with Kunal and will deliver the best possible album we can do. We only ask for a little patience before it actually will be out!"

Transcending Obscurity owner Kunal Choksi stated, "I’m a huge fan of Officium Triste and I know Pim from experience to be a very level-headed and passionate guy. Not only has he been a writer himself for Lords of Metal, but his band Officium Triste have also been interviewed on Transcending Obscurity before. The music has always remained world class and I believe the band have the potential to go a lot further. The emotive doom/death metal music is pure, soothing and incredibly heavy at the same time. It’s an honour and dream come true to work with Officium Triste for their upcoming full length release on the main label."

More information on the upcoming new release is expected soon. More...

In Mourning Introduces "Afterglow"

Sweden's lauded melodic death/doom metallers and Agonia Records recent signess, In Mounring, has revealed details surrounding the anticipated new album to be entitled "Afterglow.", The opus will be released on May 20th, 2016. The cover artwork (shown below) has been prepared by Kristian Wåhlin (Bathory, Tiamat, Amorphis, Dark Tranquillity).

The band commented: "The new album is called 'Afterglow' and its story takes off from where 'The Weight Of Oceans' ends. It’s a bit more complex than our previous albums and it has got a bit of a different sound than the older ones, a bit more alive like a band and maybe not always as studio corrected as our earlier material. However, the foundation of the music is still what we’ve always done and the key elements are pretty much the same but with some new additions and a few new twists and turns of course."

This will be the first album featuring new drummer, Daniel Liljekvist (ex-Katatonia).

Hailed by many as the heir to Opeth's melodeath throne, In Mounring was formed in the Swedish woods in the year 2000. Since then the band has evolved over the years striving to refine its sound to what it is today. April 2012 marked the release of the bands third and latest album "The Weight Of Oceans", a mythology inspired conceptual story that journeys to the sea. Musically, the group blends a broad spectrum of influences into a foundation of melodic death metal. Thrusting from doomy metal-riffs, blasting drumbeats and deep growling vocals to calm breezes of clean flowing melodies and harmonies.

"Afterglow" was recorded between November 2015 and March 2016 in Nordin Music Studios (drums) and Libra Studios (guitar, bass and vocals). Mixing and mastering duties have been handeled by Jonas Martinsson in Necrosavant Studio.

The track list is as follows:

1. Fire And Ocean
2. The Grinning Mist
3. Ashen Crown
4. Below Rise To The Above
5. The Lighthouse Keeper
6. The Call To Orion
7. Afterglow More...

From The Ashes Of Hollow Haze Comes Eternal Idol

Frontiers Music Srl is excited to announce the signing of Eternal Idol to the label, the new act that has evolved from the ashes of Hollow Haze (six albums released independently and through Bakerteam and Scarlet Records from 2006 to 2015).

Eternal Idol features Angra/Rhapsody Of Fire frontman Fabio Lione together with vocalist Giorgia Colleluori, Nick Savio on guitars, Camillo Colleluori on drums, and Andrea Buratto (Secret Sphere, Hell in The Club) on bass.

“We are very proud to be part of the Frontiers family and get the chance to release the first Eternal Idol album,” says the band. “We are going to put all our energy, emotion and passion in the record.
