Sheer Terror Releasing Box Set

Graffiti-covered subway trains, the crack epidemic, squeegee men... New York City was a very different place in the 1980's. But all that urban decay made the perfect breeding ground for a pack of groundbreaking musical movements that would take the industry by force.

Lurking in its darkest back alleyways was the New York Hardcore scene with Sheer Terror at the genre's cutting edge. Founded in 1984, Sheer Terror melded the ultra-aggressive hardcore punk of Discharge and The Nihilistics with the low-end of proto-metal behemoths Black Sabbath and Motörhead.

Starting with 1989's debut album "Just Can't Hate Enough," and going deep into the next decade, Sheer Terror released a slew of classic recordings that influenced a generation of musicians, from Pantera to Hatebreed.

Now, after years of being out-of-print, pioneering NYHC label Blackout! Records will be making all Sheer Terror's original releases available again in a one-time only box set pressing of high quality colored vinyl and featuring tons of bonus material.

This release will only be available by pre-order online and will not be in stores. Sign up through PledgeMusic.com here. A lyric video for the classic song "Cup O' Joe" has also been created and is being is available for streaming below. More...

Madball Kicking Off European Rebellion Tour

New York Hardcore heavyweights Madball will kick off the 7th installment of the band's successful "Rebellion" tour today in Bremen, Germany.

In light of the 20th anniversary of the band's iconic album, "Demonstrating My Style," Madball will (among other hits, of course) perform the entire album on the shows scheduled for March - see below.

Commented singer Freddy Cricien: "I'm excited on many levels for Rebellion 7 - we have a cool line up of bands that have really been in the trenches for years and have really influenced many in the genre, from NYC to Germany to London... and beyond! The theme of this particular Rebellion is sort of a 'throw back' one - Even though, a lot of these guys have recently dropped new material and we're currently writing for our next release - old and new... it's all relevant, I feel.

"We/MB are celebrating the 20 year anniversary of 'Demonstrating My Style' - an important release for us and 96 was a significant year for the building stages of MB. We didn't get over here for the »Set It Off« celebratory run. So, we're giving Europe first dibs on this 'special tour' which will feature Matt Henderson our original guitarist as a guest on this. Also, our friends Crown Of Thornz are celebrating 20 years of their classic 'Mentally Vexed' record, along with supporting a new EP - These guys influenced bands like Trapped Under Ice etc.. If you haven't seen them do yourself a favor.

"Rykers is back with a strong release and although Kid D is not fronting them, they are as powerful as ever live. Knuckledust are supporting a new release and those guys are always consistently a solid act..on point and have been in the game a long time! We have some other great European bands in the line up, from east to west - Last Hope and Tausend Lowen Unter Feinen. Don't miss this one!! The 'Demonstrating My Style' Edition." More...

Operus Posts New Lyric Video

Toronto, ON based Operus creates compositions of heavy, classical-influenced metal and released debut EP "Opus I" during November 2015.

Today the band posted a new lyric video for the track "Maya And The Wolf," which can be viewed at the following link below. Band founder Oscar Rangel comments:

"I believe 'Maya & the Wolf ' is the most interesting song in the album, its sound is very classical, yet the story telling in the lyrics and the instrumentation gives it folkish undertones as well. This is the song we chose to produce a lyric video for because we believe this is the most 'relatable' song in the EP and yet it still sounds heavy and it is clear that its part of a metal album.

"The instrumental part in the middle is one of the many “band solo” sections I have worked over the years using mainly the counterpoint composition technique, where all the instruments play different melodies at once to build up a very interesting sounding passage." More...

Arcana 13 Covers "Suspiria"

With the release of "Danza Macabra" - the impending debut from Italy-based occult rock/doom collective Arcana 13 - now less than two weeks away, today the band releases a cover of Goblin's "Suspiria," set to the visuals of Dario Argento's ironic film of the same name.

"Italian horror equals Dario Argento equals Suspiria," elaborates the band, "That's it, the rest is history; nothing more to add. When we started our journey into Italian horror, the very first melody we jammed on was the immortal theme of this unparalleled movie.

The group goes on to say, "In front of this colorful, psychedelic masterpiece we couldn't just cover the quintessential Goblin's piece of art, we needed to tribute and transform it into our sound. To top it off, we laid down the wall of synths with the invaluable help of Arcana 13's fifth hidden member, our brother Steve. When he's not busy with his fierce deathpunk gang Hierophant, he becomes the wizard of our eerie and purely analogue synths and keyboards! Questo respiro, non puoi più dimenticarlo...!" More...

Allfather Streaming "Raskolnikov"

U.K. sludge/hardcore band Allfather is streaming new track "Raskolnikov" online, taken from forthcoming album "Bless the Earth with Fire," which will be released via Static Tension Recordings. The band comments:

"'Raskolnikov' is the opening track of the new album, 'Bless the Earth With Fire'. We wanted to open it with a track that hits hard but hopefully shows some progression from the last record. Lyrically it takes some of the themes from 'Crime and Punishment' and the graphic novel 'From Hell,' mainly confusing freedom and enlightenment with giving into your worst instincts. Or how acting only for yourself always ends up hurting somebody. It was also a really good excuse to shout 'I THE MURDERER' because it sounds cool as fuck." More...

Metal Blade Releasing "Metal Massacre 14"

In 1982, Metal Blade Records put out its first release: "Metal Massacre," a compilation album that included Metallica, Ratt, and many other influential artists. Now, Metal Blade will be releasing "Metal Massacre 14" on April 8th - and continuing the legacy of the first album - the CD/LP/digital formats will once again contain a sampling of contemporary heavy metal.

To pre-order your copy - and to hear clips of each track - head over to this location. Primordial's Alan Averill, who compiled the track listing, had this to say:

"'Metal Massacre' is an institution that has been dormant for far too long. It served as a vital first step for many bands who are far too numerous to mention back in the early 80s. For fans, it was often the first time engaging with many of these acts, some of whom went on to become household names-- some of course didn't, but the rough and ready underground character of 'Metal Massacre' is what set it apart from other compilations back in the day. Withered Reveals New Album Details

Atlanta death metal band Withered today details forthcoming new album "Grief Relic," which will be released by Season of Mist worldwide on May 27th and pre-orders are available here.

Withered has also released the first new track from "Grief Relic" - listen in to "Husk" via the player below. Regarding the track, Withered guitarist/vocalist Mike Thompson tells Decibel Magazine:

"Having been 5 years since our last release, we felt the need to do something very intentional with 'Grief Relic.' You know that sense of timelessness you get when you go back and listen to some 20 year old metal record and it’s just as relevant now as it ever was? It’s not really about nostalgia and definitely not about rehashing anything. Just the need to continue carving out a sonic identity like the great bands of the late 80’s and early 90’s.

"We focused on song arrangements and an album structure that would offer a real emotional experience and, of course, we loaded every song with a lot of typical Withered twists and turns. It’s progress for the sake of progress without abandoning our identity. ‘Husk’ was the first song we wrote for this album and it does a pretty good job of highlighting the kind of style traversing that can be expected from 'Grief Relic.'" Black Space Riders Announces New EP

Nine months after the release of "Refugeeum," the internationally acclaimed fourth album by Black Space Riders, comes a reprise: the "Beyond Refugeeum" EP! The EP will be released May 13th via BSR/Cargo.

Vocalist/guitarist/keyboardist JE discussed the idea behind the EP: "We had deliberately kept back four songs, all original recordings, from the Refugeeum sessions in order to release them separately from the album because - as the cover artwork already may suggest - the material is different to the songs on Refugeeum. It's unlike what you might expect from this band. But you can still tell that it comes logically and quite unmistakably from the Black Space Riders. The songs are exalted, sometimes overwrought, vivid, and yet accessible. Much has happened in Europe and in the world since these songs were written at the end of 2014 and recorded in early 2015, but they seem to be even more contemporary and necessary than ever."

A track-by-track description follows:

"Welcome" is the band's first instrumental piece, a melodic, psychedelic jam that builds in intensity from quiet to very, very loud.

"Freedom at First Sight" is a crisp, catchy alternative hit that flirts with New Wave melodies and classic metal riffing.

"Droneland" evolves from a 70s Sequencer Ambient to a furious rhythm monster.
"Starglue Sniffer" is funky and dares to have beats and a "Prince-falsetto", before driving you on to the dance floor.

The EP is rounded off with two bonus tracks: "VRTX RMX" (a remix of "Vortex Sun") is atmospheric electric drone, and "Gravity" is the electro club remix of the band's 2014 hit "Give Gravitation to the People" that may and certainly will destroy or inspire one or another traditional rocker. More...
