Pit Stories: A Wild One To Remember

Tuesday has arrived, so its time for another pit story culled from the wild world of heavy metal shows! Today we've got a tale from Texas shoegaze black metal outfit Krigsgrav about a truly crazy night to remember. Drummer David Sikora tells the story like this:

Myself and Corey, our lead guitarist, were both at a show in a pretty large venue back in maybe 2000 or 2001 which featured Morbid Angel, Soulfly, and Nothingface in Dallas. I didn't even know Corey back then, but we discovered years later that we were at the same place! It was my first concert, and is still the craziest one I've ever seen.

Everywhere you looked, there were people smoking out, ripping their clothes off, lighting them on fire, and throwing them into the pit area. I saw a bodybuilder go into the pit and then walk out seconds later holding his own bloodied face after being nailed by an elbow. And at one point while Max Cavalera was on his knees rocking out on stage, someone took their boot off of their own foot and heaved it at him, striking him right square in the face and leaving him stunned for a good 10-15 seconds before he shook it off and continued playing. Haha!

The venue was at capacity, and there were barriers keeping out other people who were hoping to get in, and then towards the end of the show, people essentially overpowered the security team and pushed through the barriers and I'd say an extra 200 people came flooding into the venue and security guards were going crazy. Truly a wild one to remember!

You can hear the band's previous album "The Carrion Fields" below, or follow the latest on Krigsgrav by heading over to Facebook here. More...

Lord Mantis Releasing New EP

Chicago extreme metal band Lord Mantis will release a new EP titled "NTW" on April 29th via New Density.

Recorded at Bricktop Recording with engineer Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Like Rats) and mastered by Collin Jordan at The Boiler Room (Windhand, YOB, Voivod), the release features searing new songs that build off 2014 LP, "Death Mask" (Profound Lore).

"NTW" marks the recording debut of the new Lord Mantis line-up, which now features vocalist Dylan O'Toole and bassist Will Lindsay -- each formerly of Indian -- and guitarist Scott Shellhamer (also of American Heritage) joining the core of guitarist Andrew Markuszewski and drummer Bill Bumgardner.

"The music delves to and draws from the same place Lord Mantis has always drawn from; taking the most vicious aspects of the beast and shoving that in everyone's face," comments Markuszewski. "The songs can move anywhere. You have moments on this recording that go from fervent aggression to areas more nauseous and grimey. Every time we write new music we're more confident than before with what we're doing. The sound and technique of Lord Mantis is second nature to us, but we're also never afraid to explore new territory with it."

Gloria Morti Posts New Song Online

As "Kuebiko," the forthcoming new full-length from Finnish death metal legion Gloria Morti, draws ever closer to release, today the song "The Foul Stench Of Vomiting Blood" comes online.

"'The Foul Stench of Vomiting Blood' is a song about a murderer who acknowledges the fact that the human mind festers with impure and evil thoughts," offers guitarist Juho Räihä. "The only sane thing to do in an insane world is to kill everyone who is responsible for more bad things than good things. That's everyone, by the way. Whilst taking on the role of purifier of the world, the hero of the story plummets into his own desires by the sheer fact of surrounding himself with these thoughts, the moral of the story being that man is an animal and to be truly enlightened and 'pure' you'd have to be dead."

New album "Kuebiko" will be released on March 18th via Willowtip Records, and the previously released track "Josef Fritzl" can be heard right here. More...

Red Skies Posts New Video

From humble beginnings in 2012, Montreal, QC's Red Skies has come together to create a musical style of its own. After unleashing 2015 album "Iron Sun," the band is kicking off 2016 with the premiere of a music video for "New Voice." Vocalist Cody Dodds comments:

"The title for our song New Voice has several meanings. Not only is it our first non-animated visual representation of the music featured on our latest record, Iron Sun, it is also a metaphor for our band’s attempt to be heard in the seemingly saturated music industry of today. The video itself reflects upon a duality in the mind of an individual struggling with his desire to live in an unjust society.

"It can be interpreted in many ways, but this was the idea we were working with. The viewer will see two completely different situations playing out the main theme with an accompanying narrative. After a thorough, yet enjoyable process with our producer, Antoine Lussier (guitarist of Ion Dissonance) and the talented crew at Revox Media, we are pleased to be launching the music video for 'New Voice' via SkullsNBones.com.” More...

Gorguts Discusses Writing New EP

Gorguts just released a new video interview revealing details behind the collaborative songwriting process on upcoming EP, "Pleiades' Dust." The first of a 2 part video featuring Gorguts founder Luc Lemay, and bandmates Kevin Hufnagel and Colin Marston can be seen below.

"Pleiades' Dust" runs as a single, continuous track that spans over 30 minutes of total run time and will be released by Season of Mist worldwide on May 13th. Regarding the album, Luc Lemay comments:

"As our EP 'Pleiades’ Dust' consists out of a single long narrative composition, it was not written with the intention of being edited in segments. As the storyline proceeds in chapters though, I was able to isolate this part called 'Wandering Times' which will give the listener a good idea of the composition aesthetics which are present throughout the whole piece.

"The lyrics tell the story of the 'House of Wisdom', which is referring to a library that was based in Baghdad sometime between the 8th and the 13th century. There much of the intellectual activity of the Middle Age took place while Europe was stuck in the Dark ages after the fall of Rome.

"Many scientific discoveries were made at the time such as algebra, optics, astronomy, and many more... Without the translation movement that brought this library to life, we would have never had the Renaissance that we know. It is a story about curiosity, beautiful minds and sadly, about how man destroys great discoveries and achievements." More...

Devil You Know Announces New Tour

Devil You Know will kick off the band's first-ever North American headlining tour on April 15th in Fresno, CA.

The tour, dubbed the “Make America Metal Again” trek, is announced just as Super Tuesday kicks off and will also feature the band Oni as direct support. Full date and venue info is available below.

Francesco Artusato (guitars) states: "We are very excited to get on the road with the band Oni for our headliner tour. I got to meet the guys in this band a few months ago when I was asked to do a guest solo for their record. That's when I realized the incredible talent each one of them has. Extremely skilled musicians and the songs are sick. It’s a very cool team of people, including Josh Wilbur who produced their album (and our last record as well. He's the best!). Their record sounds really cool and I can't wait to see them perform it live. It's going to be a very fun tour for all of us!

“This is also our very first official headlining North American tour of our band’s career and we are looking forward to performing a lot of new material from They Bleed Red, which has yet to be ever played live. We are also offering VIP ticketing packages at each show, where for only $50 you get a guaranteed group photo with the band, as many autographed items as you like and a free t-shirt of your choice from our merch booth. The Unguided Commences "Operation: E.A.E."

Swedish modern metal act The Unguided just issued the new release "Lust and Loathing" this past Friday (Feb. 26th) via Napalm Records. Today the band has teamed up with Metal Underground.com to present the second music video for the release - "Operation: E.A.E."

"Lust and Loathing," the third full length release, boasts melodic and goosebump-inducing powerplay. Once you get past the harsh melodic death metal exterior, epic clean vocals and catchy keyboard tones await! Dynamic and strong songwriting with that special Scandinavian „je ne sais quoi“, massive production, and delicate guitar solos turn "Lust And Loathing" into the best gem The Unguided`s discography has yet to offer!

Vocalist Richard Sjunnesson had this to say about the song and video: "'Operation: E.A.E.' was the natural choice when we decided to record a music video in a live environment. Blatantly one of the most energy surging songs on 'Lust and Loathing'! It's all about keeping your hope close at heart and just give everything you got in hours of great distress. The music video is brought to you by the very talented team; 11 Frames Productions (Betrayer of The Code, Inception & Eye of The Thylacine) and once again they shine and really flex their muscles! Everything is filmed during a Swedish hometown gig of the band, during December (2015), in the small west coast city of Falkenberg. Interview

A Conversation With Septicflesh Guitarist Christos

Septicflesh must be one of the more unique bands in the history of death metal. Their catalogue is an ever changing one in which no two albums sound alike, with new territories often explored as they've gone on.

After disbanding in 2003, the band returned in 2007 and have since released three more albums, "Communion," "The Great Mass" and most recently, "Titan," which have all displayed a symphonic element.

At a recent show with Kataklysm and Aborted in London (read the review here), I was able to sit down and discuss the band's music, plans and the state of their home country of Greece with guitarist and co-founder, Christos Antoniou. You can watch the interview below. More...
