Unearthing the Metal Underground: Mosaic

Germany’s Mosaic has been making noise since 2005, and their earliest releases, including the stunning debut full-length “Old Man’s Wyntar,” represented a black metal band that wasn’t afraid to be bold and step outside of the lines of convention. Yes, it was primitive and bleak—adequately captured by a cold production aesthetic. And yet there were beautiful melodies and epic elements that were film score-like in nature. They’ve continued upon their own path through several releases including their significantly more experimental sophomore album, “Secret Ambrosian Fire,” that was released in 2019. More...

Origin Announces North American Tour Dates

This spring, genre-defining technical death metal giants, Origin, are gearing up for not one but two North American tours to celebrate their 25 year anniversary as a band. They will start their journey on May 5 with The Space Control Tour 2022, with co-headliners Misery Index.

Today, the band announces The Chaosmos Tour 2022 will kick off on May 23, this time with American death metal masters Abysmal Dawn as direct support. The 21-day trek will make stops in Los Angeles, Vancouver, and Minneapolis prior to its conclusion in Lawrence, Kansas on June 15. The opening bands include Brooklyn-based experimental metal outfit Tombs and Canadian technical death metal band Killitorous.

Drummer John Longstreth comments, "Here we are again! Announcing yet another tour! I am happy to report to you that Origin will be hitting the road with Abysmal Dawn, Tombs, and Killitorous! After a two year break, I think it's easy to understand that everyone may be a little apprehensive, nervous, or maybe just flat out rusty from a 2-year break of not doing what we love, and LUCKILY we get to share this new beginning with some familiar touring friends in Abysmal Dawn! No one is going to feel all that embarrassed about if I can't remember how to set up a drum kit, or if Charles Elliott has taken on clean singing, or someone forgets where their dirty, sweaty, stinky, salty stage laundry goes in the van! (it goes in the trailer, dear reader, NOT the van. in a blue Ikea bag, if ya must know). Along with us comes Ottawa's Killitorous, and Tombs from Brooklyn, NY to shake things up with everything black, death, tech, doom, and straight out METAL! So come out and get up close and see what all 4 of these bands have been ruminating in for the past 2 years! See you on tour!"

The tour dates are as follows: More...

Månegarm Unveils New Music Video

Swedish folk metal mainstays Månegarm have made a name for themselves in the international scene by releasing nine full-length records since their debut, "Nordstjärnans Tidsålder," back in 1998. Now, the Scandinavian crew takes another stroll through ancient sagas and myths of long forgotten times on the successor to 2019’s chart-topping "Fornaldarsagor" with their upcoming 10th studio album, "Ynglingaättens Öde" (EN: the fate of the Ynglinga kin), out April 15, 2022 via Napalm Records.

At the head of the scene for more than 25 years and after smashing the staggering first single off the new full-length, entitled "Ulvhjärtat" (EN: the Wolfheart), the Swedish wolf pack unveils the second single, "En Snara Av Guld" (EN: a golden noose), a flattering, ballad-like yet powerful mid-tempo song. It starts off with a capturing, dusky intro that leads into a catchy, heavy tune with growls that alternate with clean singing and gentle vocal harmonies presented by Lea Grawsiö Lindström - the daughter of Månegarm vocalist Erik Grawsiö. The track is accompanied by a captivating cinematic official music video that leads into the band’s Nordic world of myths, telling the dark and vicious story of the golden noose.

Månegarm on "En Snara Av Guld":
"'En Snara Av Guld' is our newest single from the upcoming album and is one of the songs that we are most satisfied with. It's a grand, epic song that revolves around one simple but powerful melody; a melody that tells this gruesome story in a captivating way: the story about the Finnish daughter Skjalv who gets abducted and is forced to marry King Agne – the same man that killed her father. She finally gets her revenge on Agne and when the new day dawns, the King gets his final rest high up in the trees." More...

Aeternitas Splits Up After 23 Years

Lübeck, Germany based symphonic metal veterans Aeternitas has announced that after twenty three years, the band has decided to break up. Their final release was the single, "Shadows," last year, with their final album being 2020's "Haunted Minds." A statement from the band reads as follows:

"As you may have noticed, there has been a period of silence and we now unfortunately share some sad news. It is with regret that we announce our decision to bring an end to the Aeternitas story.

"As you can imagine, this decision was truly the hardest in the history of the band, especially considering we have recently announced a new female singer and bass player.

“The reasons for our decision are hard to explain in detail and also complex. However, after the cancellation of our planned European tour in January we had a lot of time to reflect, consider the future, our collective and individual musical goals, wishes and expectations, which ultimately brought us to this outcome.

“On reflection, we are very thankful for more than 20 unbelievable years, including six album releases and many incredible live shows we experienced together with you all. However, now it is time for a new chapter.

“And so, we part as friends, proud of what we have achieved over all the years, which was only possible with your help and your support.

“For sure, we shall all continue our own metal or other musical endeavours and we are looking forward to seeing you in one of our future projects. You can already follow Miss ScarRed with her solo project https://instagram.com/miss_scarred_official. She is currently in the process of preparing an EP release this year, starting the production in April.

“Thank you all very much for your support and loyalty!

Def Leppard Reveals New Album Details

Ready to ignite 2022, Def Leppard return with their twelfth full-length album, "Diamond Star Halos," on May 27 via UMe. It marks the band’s first new work since 2015’s chart-topping self-titled, Def Leppard. It is available for pre-order now in multiple configurations, including a Deluxe Edition, 2LP Vinyl, Digital formats and more. Exclusive bundles including newly designed album merch have also launched. Pre-order on the band’s official store, here.

To herald the arrival of Diamond Star Halos, the UK quintet - Joe Elliott [vocals], Rick Savage [bass], Rick Allen [drums], Phil Collen [guitar], and Vivian Campbell [guitar] - have just shared a powerful and rip-roaring new rock single entitled “Kick”. The song thrusts into an anthemic stadium-ready frenzy kickstarted with driving guitars and bombastic drums woven into its musical fabric. Meanwhile, the chorus has all the makings of another iconic Leppard hit with its skyscraping vocals and melodies the band has become synonymous for. Listen to the single below.

The artwork for Diamond Star Halos is art in itself. The design follows pedigree with their instantly recognizable album covers from their celebrated past. With images by world renowned photographer and director Anton Corbijn, styling concepts by Maryam Malakpour and graphics by the UK based Munden Brothers, the design truly follows the band’s influence through their eyes today.

Written by the band over the past two years it features 15 tracks including the anthemic, stadium-ready singles "Kick" and "Fire It Up," with guest vocals from Alison Krauss on "This Guitar" and "Lifeless." The album title references T. Rex’s "Bang A Gong (Get It On)" with nods to T.Rex, David Bowie and Mott The Hoople across the album, which mixes the sound of their classic spirit with modern fire.

Tracklisting:

1. Take What You Want
2. Kick
3. Fire It Up

Interview

The Defaced Are Back And Facing "Charlatans"

Since the 1990s when death metal exploded in popularity, Sweden has been revered for producing so many bands and has become known as one of the homes of metal music. Not only did the likes of At The Gates and Dark Tranquillity help put the country on the map musically, but so did preceding legends like Candlemass and Bathory. To this day, Sweden is still giving the world amazing heavy music and with such a long history of music, it's only natural that some of the superb groups of the past return, as is the case of The Defaced.

The Defaced began life in 1995, initially going by the name Rehab until changing it to their more familiar moniker in 1999. Their debut album, "Domination Commence" followed two years later, with a sophomore full length, "Karma In Black" arriving two years after that. After some lineup changes, the band released their third album, "Anomaly" in 2008, but also split up that same year. Fourteen years later, the quartet are back with "Charlatans," a vicious ten song release which is sure to evoke fond memories from fans, as well as bring in new ones.

To find out more about the record, Metal Underground spoke with vocalist Jens Broman and guitarist Mattias Svensson, who revealed all about how the band came back to life three years ago, the music and meanings behind the new album and much more. You can watch the interview in full below.

Diamond Oz: Well, first of all, welcome back! It's been a long time since there's been a new Defaced album. When you reunited three years ago, did you always intend to release a new album?

Mattias Svensson: That was the intention, to record a new album and pick things up from there. I'd written some songs that I felt I needed to do and I felt that the songs were in the line of where we left off in 2008. Me and Jens, we hadn't talked for a while. We kept a sort of slow contact on and off and I got in touch with Jens and you kind of agreed.

Jens Broman: Yeah, I did! I hadn't done music for quite a long time. I was actually at home with my newborn kid and I was like, "How about doing some more creative stuff?" I was missing doing music and if you have kids/will have kids, I'm sure that you feel that something is missing in your life. You need something more creative. Mattias had contacted me before but we were in different stages in our lives, people in bands are always going through different stages, so it's really hard to re-align and feel that and this was perfect timing.

Mattias: I kind of felt that you were a bit surprised that I made that call and that I was thinking along those lines, but it was sort of a short discussion really. "Send me the songs," you said and I did and we just picked things up from there.

Jens: Yeah, exactly. I was really surprised that you called me. I mean, we talked maybe once a year and met at music festivals or whatever. But it was perfect timing and life is about perfect timing. I think that was the story, actually.

Cage Fight Shares "Respect Ends" Video

Hardcore / thrash / crossover band, Cage Fight, have released their enraging new single, "Respect Ends." The track is the second to be taken from their upcoming debut album, "Cage Fight," due for release 13th May on the Candlelight label. You can check it out below.

The new track presents itself as an aggressive warning to those that attempt to prey on others. Vocalist Rachel Aspe explains:

"This song is dedicated to men (and anyone in general) who thinks it’s okay to harass, abuse, make inappropriate comments or not take no for an answer, both in the real world but also online. It’s also a message of solidarity to those who have been victims of such behaviour. The video is symbolic of the frustration and damage this can cause, and it’s something we as a society should not and will not accept. The final message is clear. If this is how you behave, stay the f**k away, otherwise you will regret it." More...
