Saphath Unveils New Music Video

Russian death metal band Saphath has revealed their second single, "Outcast of Eden," from their upcoming debut, full-length album, "Ascension of the Dark Prophet" that's due out on April 8th. The single is available now on Apple Music, Spotify and all streaming services, and is accompanied by a cinematic music video available for viewing in 4K at Youtube, or below.

Commenting on the single, vocalist Alexey Duraev states:

"This is the song that questions the notion of original sin and manifests knowledge above belief. Will you be the one who seeks the truth or the one accepting a comfortable explanation?"

Hailing from the city of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk on the Sakhalin Island in far east Russia, Saphath's interpretation of death metal is influenced by metallic predecessors Moonspell, Dark Tranquility, ScepticfFesh, Behemoth and Cradle of Filth and melds elements of death, black and gothic metal with dark symphonic ensembles. Death defies boundaries, and so do Saphath. More...

Hypermass Releases New Music Video

Rising Norwegian metal band Hypermass is staking their claim as Europe's next breakout band with the release of their devastating new single "The Degenerate Strain." Revealed first at MetalSucks, the crushing track is a taste of the mayhem yet to come from the band's new album due out later this year. You can watch the video below.

The band comments on "The Degenerate Strain":

"This song came as a wildcard at the end of the writing process. The album had been done for months, and we were confident that it was a wrap. Then one night, where everyone was present, we were messing around with this sliding rock n roll style riff, reminiscent of driving down the highway in a convertible with the roof off. This turned out to be the main riff. The rest of the song fell into place in a span of about three hours - it pretty much wrote itself. I think most musicians can relate to those special moments when a song just gets shat out of nowhere. Those are usually the most promising cuts." - Thomas Pedersen (guitarist)

"The process of writing The Degenerate Strain went very smoothly. For me personally, the mission behind the process was to get the perfect chorus for the song. The goal was to make the band sound as grandiose as possible - something I think we did well. The song works as a good single for the album, although the album offers a lot of variety. But this is definitely a good song to start the release with." - Markus Sundet (vocalist)

"We had already wrapped up the writing process when this riff popped up in our heads, so you could call it somewhat of an “encore” to the whole process. Once we got going with the main riff, the rest of the song came naturally. Still different from the other tracks, we wanted something that defined our sound, while giving a satisfying finale to the writing process. Heavy, melodic, catchy and intense are all key words to define this mammoth of a song. We’re all thrilled to show you what we’ve been working on these past years, and this is definitely a great place to start so crank it up and enjoy!" - Sindre Dagestad (guitarist)

Dirty Shirt Posts New Music Video Online

Started as a wedding band, Romania's Dirty Shirt knows how to get the party started and keep it going. Playing a signature mix of nu-metal, metalcore, alternative rock, and hardcore, the gang of musicians takes a wide array of influences and creates something distinctly their own. The second single off their upcoming album "Get Your Dose Now!" is the chipper and upbeat "Dope-A-Min." The band explains it in their own words:

"It is probably one of the most energetic songs from the album. It starts quite 'standard' with a nu-metal/hardcore intro, then the verses and choruses combine metal with traditional style melodies, giving almost a 'pirate metal' ambiance. The intermezzo completely changes the ambiance, with some complex rhythm break, then a melodic part, with vocals and violin theme composed in gypsy Romanian style. The song ends in symmetry, with the same part as the intro. Lyrically, the song is about all the illusions created by social media. We must be happy at all costs, and have become dependent on these shots of dopamine that we pop like vitamins tablets every morning."

Early on in their existence, Dirty Shirt played progressive alternative metal and now base their sound off nu-metal with prominent influences from hardcore, industrial, funk, and electro. They add on to it further by adding eclectic inspiration, especially from East European traditional music. Album after album they develop and tweak their sound which is played by eight core members and a large parade of guests present on recordings and at larger live events.

The album "Get Your Dose Now!" is out on April 1, 2022. More...

Crown Of Madness Streaming Debut EP

Husband and wife duo Crown of Madness started during the pandemic, with the intention of creating a melancholy atmosphere by using dissonant guitar chords, with riffs that interweave or “talk to each other”. The drumming is consistently heavy, but tasteful, adding a unique element to the technicality. Their debut EP "The Void" is streaming now via its premiere on EverythingIsNoise here.

“The Void” is themed around the tragic human condition and experiencing trauma that often leads to growth. Drawing inspiration from the lore of Dark Souls, there are many themes of comparing the light to the darkness and how there is a balance within us all. “The Void” is something we all face as human beings; it is the evil in the world that can us take over, such as temptation, violence, and suicide. The band details more about the EP:

"We put a ton of energy and passion into producing this EP by ourselves, making this release an incredible feat for us as producer/musicians and as a couple. It’s amazing to look back on ourselves as teenagers who shared a love for metal, and now being extremely proud of the music we created together. As cliché as this may sound, we want people to love our music as much as we do. Taking on the process to self produce this EP was not an easy decision to make. Due to the overwhelming amount of knowledge a producer/engineer/mixer should know, we often doubted that we could ever achieve great production quality without going into a real studio. But we continued to work consistently, learning something about production day by day that eventually led to our decision to fully produce this EP. We want to continue to learn from this release and hone our skills as musicians and producers so our music can have better and better quality as time goes on."

"The Void" is available to buy now.

Interview

Sum Of R Talks New Album And Recruiting A Vocalist

Switzerland has a long history of experimenting when it comes to metal music. Be it the original avant-garde metal pioneers Celtic Frost, the mainland Celt inspired tunes of Eluveitie or more recent progressive bands such as Dreamshade, there's always been interesting music coming out of central European nation. Another example of Swiss musical ingenuity comes in the form of Sum Of R, a project originally conceived by Reto Mäder who released their self-titled debut album in 2009.

Only yesterday, Sum Of R released their fourth full lenfth opus, "Lahbryce," which brought in even more elements to the band's sound. Perhaps the most notable was the addition of vocalist Marko Neuman, in what had previously been a mostly instrumental affair. To find out more about the record, Metal Underground was fortunate enough to put some questions to Reto Mäder and Marko Neuman, who told us all about the album's meaning, soundscapes, visuals and more.

Diamond Oz: Congratulations on your new album, "Lahbryce." What can you tell us about the meaning behind the album's title?

Marko Neuman: Thank you. The title means ”breach of the law”. To find solutions we have to make mistakes. Sometimes ”a mistake” is committing a crime. For example, with murder, an individual can find a “better” self, meaning of life. Of course by bearing the consequences.

Oz: Why did you decide that now was the time to introduce vocals into what was previously an instrumental band?

Reto Mäder: Various factors played a role. After 10 years of working with Sum Of R as a solo project with different guest musicians it was time to transform the project into a band. This started in summer 2019 after a session in Switzerland with Jukka as drummer. In the same year, Marko, the singer of Dark Buddha Rising and me, revived Ural Umbo and recorded "Roomer" – dedicated to our common love for horror movie soundtracks. When Sum Of R was then booked for the Roadburn Festival 2020 as a two-piece instrumental band, Jukka and me thought about having a guest singer for that particular performance, Marko.

When Roadburn was cancelled due to the pandemic, I did not want to give up on the project and booked the first possible flight after the first shutdown in Switzerland to travel to Finland for three weeks of studio recording with the trio line-up that never was. During the recordings it quickly became clear that Marko is more than just a guest singer. So it was not a decision against an instrumental band, but a natural development around different factors that guided us towards each other.
