Pit Stories: Flaming Speakers

After some forays away from moshing to look at what happens before and after a show, this week's Pit Story dives straight back into the action!

Drummer Rodolfo Rogers from Mexican blackened death metal band Evilheart shared these tales of the odd things one will encounter at a metal show:

Many years ago we were playing at a local rock festival, and the crowd were pretty apathetic. As we kept playing a burnt smell stated to come out from one of the speakers. We told that to one of the crew people from the Festival, but they told us to keep playing, and a few minutes later, one of the speakers was on fire. The good thing was that the apathetic crowd went apeshit when they saw the fire coming out from the speaker, and after that it was a fucking killer concert.

In our shows most of the time there is the regular mosh pit, and I say most of the time, because there are a couple of exceptions. The first one happened in Victoria City in Tampico, Mexico. In that show people were doing the usual headbanging & mosh pit, but suddenly some guys threw themselves to the floor and they started to roll until they would crash into each other. We all jaw dropped since it was the first time we saw something like that, and it’s been the only place we have seen something like that. A killer show and killer crowd for sure. The second was in Navojoa in Sonora, Mexico. Another killer show and people started with the usual headbanging and mosh pit, and then some guys started to smash their heads against a pole. I wouldn’t do that, but they seemed to enjoy it.

Evilheart just re-released the "Quinquaginta" album via Test Your Metal Records, which is available digitally here or in physical formats here. You can also stream the release below. More...

Abhorrent Decimation Streaming Full Album

Just days ahead of the official release of "Miasmic Mutation," U.K. death metal outfit Abhorrent Decimation has unleashed an aural assault of the album in its entirety.

Recorded in England with David Archer before mixing and mastering with Ronnie Björnström (Aeon, Apostasy, Bodyfarm, Krow) in Sweden, "Miasmic Mutation" is the band’s debut full-length and will be unleashed in various formats worldwide on September 25, 2015. Vocalist Ashley Scott discusses the lyrical inspiration behind the album:

“When we started the writing process I was gently brewing a concept but had no real lyrical theme. I knew visually what I wanted to achieve and I knew that I wanted to call the album Miasmic Mutation. I actually contacted Par Olofsson a long time ago (August 2014) to get things started on the artwork. I thought the visual would really help get things rolling for everyone. I wanted to run with this idea I had of some sort of gas like mutation taking a physical form above an icy landscape.

"It didn't take Par long to complete the art and when we got the final back, things really began to take off. Around that time, I had just finished reading Dante’s The Divine Comedy again and was really into the notion of personal exile and the journey of life in general. Inspired, I came up with the starting block for the record’s concept, which was to create three passages, akin to The Divine Comedy except I would choose Life, Death and Afterlife.

"I was particularly adamant we would have nine songs on the final cut so that would allow me three songs per passage to explore the ideas and stories I wanted to tell. Some of the songs are total fantasy but most of them are literal and metaphorical reflections on situations I was experiencing or had experienced around the time of writing, adapted to fit the concept. The mutation itself is a personification of my thoughts, encompassing all these notions of life, death and the afterlife.” More...

70,000 Tons of Metal 2016 will set sail on February 4th-8th from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and return to Jamaica with a stop at Falmouth.

The festival will board a new vessel, the second in as many years: The Independence of the Seas (via Royal Caribbean). The ship will accommodate four stages: The Alhambra Theater is a five-story concert hall in which they spare no expense to remove part of the (very comfortable) seating so you have a real Mosh Pit on the High Seas; The more intimate Egyptian themed Pyramid Lounge offers the local club atmosphere; The third indoor stage is in Studio B, the ice skating rink featuring a maritime version of the Arena experience and last but not least their jewel: The Pool Deck stage - The World’s Biggest Open Air Stage Structure to ever sail the Open Seas, surrounded by multiple bars and pools, plenty of room to sunbathe on several decks and even hot tubs incorporated into the Pool Deck stage to soak in while you watch the shows!

The All-Star Jam band, which returned this past January will also be back, led by Annihilator's Jeff Waters and members from the various acts aboard performing cover tunes live.

Ticket prices include all on board entertainment, most non-alcoholic and non-carbonated beverages, all meals in the dining rooms, most on board restaurants and even 24 hour room service. For more information or to book your high seas metal adventure, head on over to 70000tons.com.
