Orange Goblin Signs To Candlelight Records
Orange Goblin member Ben Ward has posted the following message online:
"Orange Goblin are very proud to announce a new era for the band with the signing to world renowned metal label, Candlelight Records. The number of vastly successful bands on the Candlelight roster is testament to the quality and the hard work that everyone involved in the label has shown us and we are very excited about settling down in a new home after the label problems we have encountered in the past few years. It's an honour to be on such an esteemed label alongside bands that have inspired us since the band's inception. I believe that with the Candlelight team behind Orange Goblin we can concentrate on writing the best material of our career and continue to tour as much as possible, hopefully reaching parts of the world that Orange Goblin is yet to plunder! We have already started writing new material for a release in 2009 and OG fans, in fact metal fans in general, are gonna love how the new stuff is sounding. It's gonna be a hugh combination of Sabbath-inspired doom, filthy biker blues and more of the familiar booze-ridden Goblin groove. Hold tight!"

A message from the bands webmaster reads as follows:
"The record was recorded at Walton Castle in Clevedon, near Bristol, in the sunny South West of England, at various times during the spring of this year. The place is not a studio as such, but the band thought the 2 foot thick stone walls and large selection of rooms and turrets would work brilliantly, so they moved all their recording kit, all the equipment, tons of cables and pipes, and their swimming trunks down to the place, and guess what? They were right! As he who controls all things, I have heard it, and it sounds fab! All songs were written by Luke, except 'Watching Over You' (which he wrote with Andy Taylor Jr and Mike Keen). As is tradition, I'll be uploading a short audio clip each week, between now and the release date. Click here for the first one. Spread the word babies, the campaign begins NOW! You know what you have to do, and please don't let me down."
Record Labels Take On Video Games
The following report is courtesy of Antony Bruno from Billboard/Reuters:
When you contrast the financial struggles of the music industry with the skyrocketing success of the videogame market, it's no surprise record labels are ready to play hardball on future music licensing.
The latest data from NPD Group find that U.S. videogame sales totaled more than $9.5 billion through the first seven months of 2008, a 35% jump from the same period last year. And in a recent report, UBS analyst Ben Schachter credits music games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero III as a critical factor in that success -- responsible for 15% of game sales so far this year and 32% of the industry's year-over-year growth. As you may have see here earlier, we shot it outside of Los Angeles a month ago and we hope that you are as blown away by Thomas' vision as we are." More...
Spylacopa Announces Release Date For Debut
While no well-versed metalhead would ever consider the ambient sounds of SPYLACOPA to be "metal" by any stretch of the imagination, there are good reasons why news of a debut release from a band that unites members from so many noteworthy metal bands to be of importance. Although this slowly developing project has been Brooklyn-based former CANDIRIA guitarist John LaMaccia's baby since the band disbanded few years ago, the project has accumulated a cast of cohorts over the course of its life that have turned it into a kind of supergroup of sorts. As of now, SPYLACOPA consists of LaMaccia, Greg Puciato of DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN, Julie Christmas of MADE OUT OF BABIES and BATTLE FOR MICE, Jeff Caxide of ISIS, (and formerly Chris Hornbrook of POISON THE WELL). Their debut EP will be independently released on November 4 in an extremely limited pressing.
In SPYLACOPA, LaMaccia and friends are delving even further into the atmospheric and decidedly "non-metal" aspects that makes their respective bands so unique within their sphere of music. SPYLACOPA approaches electronic music from a much different point-of-view than is typical for the genre, and as such they layer their songs with a brooding intensity that is not very different structurally from the heavier sounds of their other bands. Although SPYLACOPA has much more in common with artists such as MASSIVE ATTACK or LUSTMORD than the likes of DEP, ISIS, MADE OUT OF BABIES, or CANDIRIA, there is a different kind of rage and a chaos subliminally present within the music that makes it a great listen for even a casual fan of these musicians. Either way, it's an interesting experiment that might give you a better perspective of what is inspiring the artists in all these bands right now. If you're interested in hearing more, check out the band at their MySpace page.
