Communic Talks About New Album

KvltSite spoke to Communic frontman Oddleif Stensland about their new album "Payment of Existence" and more. Here are some excerpts:

KvltSite: I don't know if it's early enough for you to look back at the latest album Payment of Existence, and comment on it subjectively. How satisfied are you with how it turned out?

Oddleif (Communic): I am really happy with it. It was a tough album to complete, but almost everything turned out the way that I wanted. There are a few things that I would have changed regarding the mixing, but that is probably stuff that only I think of. All in all it has turned out to become a natural progression of what we started with on the demo, and that it shows that we have a unique sound of our own."

KvltSite: It must be tricky, writing lyrics in a language that's not entirely native to you. Do you form the lyrics in Norwegian first and then pen it down as a translation, or do you think in English from the start?

Oddleif (Communic): When I just begin working on a new song, I mostly think of melody and no actual words. And then later, I try to make sense of the complete story or what I want to tell. The lyrics are not that important to me in the beginning of the songwriting process. It's the melody that counts, but in the end it needs to have some kind of meaning to it. Writing in Norwegian is not ideal for the way I like to work, though.

KvltSite: So you think of phonetics while writing lyrics.

Oddleif (Communic): Yes, the melody and phonetics are the most important, then the music and composition – the meaning comes in last, I’m afraid…

White Zombie Drummer Talks About New Box Set

White Zombie drummer Ivan de Prume has posted the following message online regarding the bands forthcoming box set:

“Finally, man!! There is so much material before we were signed to Geffen and put out La Sexorcisto and it shows an evolution of the band. When I joined the band at the age of 17, they had recorded one EP. Sean and I had played together previously and when they needed a drummer, she called me. I was listening to bands like METALLICA, SLAYER, and of course the BEASTIE BOYS, who were busting out in New York at the time. We all brought different influences to the table. I was still in high school and just wanted to play drums and had definitely not refined my writing technique or my playing yet. We worked hard, played a lot, and tried to put songs together but we were all really young at making music. I’m sure you’ll be able to hear an evolution and growth as the band became more cohesive in what we wanted to do and learned to actually put it all together. This is the process that any young band goes through and I have really fond memories of those innocent times.

"We were a band who just wanted to make music and have it heard and we were lucky enough to be doing it at a time when the industry still responded to that. I know a lot of great musician’s out there right now making exceptional music but that’s not what motivates the industry anymore and I think that’s a shame. I wish we could go back to the days where you could have a great sound and people would buy your records but instead we have a nation of people looking to American Idol to tell them what’s good. For now, I’ll keep doing what I’ve been doing with my band Healer and know that we’re being true to ourselves as musicians and hope that bands that are practising the same philosophy continue to eek their way onto the airwaves and into people’s lives. Enjoy the early stuff for now and keep rockin’!!”

Hod Checks In From The Studio

San Antonio, Texas-based extreme metal band HOD has posted a studio update on their upcoming album, "Serpent," and various live dates.

In a statement from the band, guitarist Lord Necron states:

"The recording process with Stuart 'BatLord' Laurence (Thornspawn, Averse Sefira) is going very well with the new album. We have completed all major tracking. This recording so far is really heavy. You really feel the crunch in the guitars and pounding of the kick drums. All we have left is the vocals and then the final mix down. Prepare to have you neck ripped from your body trying to headbang to those blast beats!"

The band has also added a few shows in their hometown and surrounding area. The upcoming HOD shows are:

Sep 12, 2008 White Rabbit - San Antonio, Texas (w/ Sigh, Unexpect)
Oct 11, 2008 Room 710 - Austin, Texas (w/ Averse Sefira, Mortality)
Oct 17, 2008 Warhol - San Antonio, Texas (w/ Exmortus, A Devoured Deception, Hexlust, Criminals of Assault)
Oct 23, 2008 White Rabbit - San Antonio, Texas (w/ Master)

The band is set to release their debut album on Ibex Moon Records sometime in early 2009.

Lifelover Completes Recording New Album, "Konkurs"

LIFELOVER has completed the recordings of their brand new opus, "Konkurs."

The band's record label, Avantgarde Music, commented:

"We had huge expectations, artistically wise, from this recording... and we have not been disappointed at all by our favorite clochard of depressive dark music. 'Konkurs' is a fascinating album that mixes in a perfect solution both the traditional 'depressive black metal' roots of the band and their well know more 'avantgarde' (somebody says 'bizarre') elements. Be prepared for a masterpiece. An album that will not be embraced by indifference at all. as it is simply not possible to remain indifferent to this music.

"We are also very happy to say that the band worked out a marvellous layout artwork too."

The new album is slated for an October release a special limited edition is being considered as well. You can preview some tracks on the band's MySpace page.
