Pit Stories: Crowd Turns On The Hardcore Kid

Ready for a new bout of pit mayhem today, metal heads? This week pit story comes courtesy of Ontario-based outfit Black Absinthe.

We've all seen the hardcore kids throwing the windmills and fighting invisible ninja, which the more casual show-goers generally don't care for. They might be obnoxious, but you can't fault their enthusiasm at a live show.

Black Absinthe shares this tale of one such individual who unfortunately reaps what he sows... but soldiers on anyway:

The first few formative years of the band, we played a lot at a place called 751. Located on 751 Queen St. in Toronto this was our preferred and beloved dive bar for many years. Cheap beer 'n shot combos combined with dirty metal shows in the basement made it an ideal spot to start playing.

Our bass player Kyle Scarlett was working there as a bartender and privy to a front row seat of the bloodbath that occurred before we had a chance to grace the stage. It was the second band of a four four bill, good and crowded in the basement. Given that the capacity down there was something like 50 people max we had a good crowd of about 70 throughout the night.

The earlier bands were more on the hardcore end. And with hardcore you're gonna have some motherfucker throwing down. I'm all for getting worked up to the music and givin' 'er (windmilling at shows with dreads has led to some altercations) but the dude was just pushing everyone out the way that wasn't about to do Super Saiyan back at him. You could feel the crowd feeling the same thing like, "fuck can someone just give the dude a decent elbow and we can all get back to watching the show without guarding from a random clock in the face?”

So the vibe against the kid is turning, sitting behind the bar I can just feel it. Then eventually BAM! He finally gets a hit that launches him over to the wall (which I should mention was fairly stuccoed. If I had to give it a description I’d say...coarse?). Seeing the kid after I immediately take back whatever past feeling I felt about hoping he 'gets it' because this kid got it hard.

As I get a look at his face I see this front pepperoni slice sliver of his nose is hanging straight off the bottom of where it should be. Straight up figure 8 of fucked up face. Dangling, asking to be ripped off like a ticket from a skeeball machine. The open bit is gushing plenty of blood to clear out the room until the next band sound checked but I will credit the kid with being hard. He wanted to stay for the whole show. Pained me to tell him go to the hospital, stitch the front of your fucking nose back on, and that we'd be back another time.

Black Absinthe's upcoming album "Early Signs Of Denial" was produced by Dave Baksh (Cross Dog, The Mahones) and mixed and mastered by Frank Gryner (Rob Zombie- Hillbilly Deluxe). Set for release on May 13th, 2016, the album is the band's first professional recording and follows three self recorded EPs. More...

Guitarist DJ Temple comments: "On the surface, 'Burn' shows a decent into hell. The imagery and content seems to follow the rhetoric of a burning and painful afterlife. In reality, 'Burn' is actually about the decent into madness.

"Your own personal hell while you battle your inner demons and face your own addictions. Listeners of this song can hear references to famous depictions of damnation from other literary worlds and even a very famous video game.” More...

The Morningside Streams "Out Of Nest"

BadMoodMan Music, a sub-label of Solitude Productions, just released The Morningside's "Yellow" this month, and now a new track from that release has come online. Check out third track "Out Of Nest" below. The label also comments:

"Since the very first album, it became apparent that Russian band The Morningside are on to something special. By blending genres like death, doom, and black metal, similar to Katatonia but more atmospheric, they've come up with a sound that's absolutely beautiful and enthralling. It's heavy but not crushing, the melodies remain ever so fragrant and the music sinuous in a graceful way.

"This album sees the band incorporate more progressive and even folkish and post-metal elements to make sure it's fulfilling its ambition and at the same time not straying away from the established sound. Every song is like a different chapter - connected but different in a special way. Influenced by a Kurt Vonnegut book, the yellow tram on the cover is symbolic of the travails of the central character and also life - it's up to us to keep it interesting and memorable. The album serves as a wonderful soundtrack to life and its infinite vagaries."

1. To The Last Point...
2. As A Pilgrim
3. Out Of Nest
4. Missing Day
5. Depot Only
6. Clocks
7. ...Then He Walked More...

Imperium Dekadenz Announces New Album

Imperium Dekadenz just revealed that the band's forthcoming album has been given the title "Dis Manibvs," which is translated from Latin to "To the Spirits of the Dead" and basically meaning "In Remembrance."

The German black metal veterans will release this fifth full-length on August 26th. Imperium Dekadenz comments: "As for our previous record, 'Meadows of Nostalgia', we entered the Iguana Studio close to Freiburg, Germany to record the drum-tracks with engineer Christoph Brandes at the end of October 2015. This provided the foundation for our fifth studio album, before we took a break to tour with our label mates Shining and Der Weg Einer Freiheit in November.

"After this successful ride, we immediately began to record guitars, bass, and vocals in our own studios during the following months. At the beginning of February this year, we were ready to return to Iguana Studios to create a mix together with Christoph Brandes, who refined the outcome with an amazingly dynamic mastering. We are incredibly proud of the result and can sincerely promise you that 'Dis Manibvs' will strike you as our strongest and most diverse release yet." More...

Short Film Set To Mortiis Track

"Vardøger," the first of three short films by Norwegian shock filmmaker Reinert Kiil and set to Mortiis' "Geisteskrank," has come online and can be seen below. This Mortiis' track was recorded during the same sessions that yielded latest album "The Great Deceiver."

"The video unpleasantness continues," said Mortiis, who has already unveiled three graphically-intense videos from the album. "A while back Norwegian horror director Reinert Kiil started his short film trilogy based on his own ugly descent into depravity and violence. Never ones to turn our backs to a good cause, we leaped at the opportunity to provide the soundtrack to what is essentially a good old bashing. 'Vardøger' is the first part. I've seen the next one, and it just keeps getting worse." More...

Vidian Announces EP Details

“I have revealed a piece of the end I've seen it, I’ve touched it. I've backed away in fear. But my curiosity tells me to keep going back To scrape off further layers.”

Sometimes the bleakest outlooks produce the most heartfelt sounds. Melancholy infuses the works of Vidian, works its way into the skeletons of technical grooves that form the backbone of the songs.

The four new ones presented on "A Piece of the End" are some of the ban d's most engaging yet, from the hard-hitting “Constellations,” through the eerie instrumental “Distorted” and twisted bass-driven “Pole Shift.” and out the other side in the introspective-yet-powerful title track.

Guitarist Adam Borys comments: "A Piece of the End closes one chapter in the history of Vidian and opens the next one. This is music played straight from the heart and we are excited to see where this journey takes us.”

New EP "A Piece of the End" is due for release on May 25th via Arachnophobia Records. Pre-order here. The track listing is:

1. Constellations
2. Distorted

Demonic Obedience Premieres New Single

We're going back to some old school blasting death metal today with an exclusive premiere from U.K. one-man wrecking ball Demonic Obedience!

Forged primarily by vocalist, guitarist, and bassist George Ntavelas, the project's second album "Nocturnal Hymns To The Fallen" is coming on May 18th via Satanath Records.

With the album now due out in just a little over two weeks, we've got the exclusive premiere of advance track "Portal Of The Sacred Kan" - check it out below and let us know what you think!

If you like what you hear, the full previous album "Morbid Supremacy of Evil" is also up for streaming and digital purchase at Bandcamp here.

Band mastermind George also comments:

"Demonic Obedience is a one man band which started four years ago when I was still in Greece. So far I managed to release two full-length albums ('Morbid Supremacy of Evil' and 'Nocturnal Hymns to the Fallen') with the help of support of Achilleas who is the man behind the production and Alex who is responsible for the lyrics.

"'Nocturnal Hymns' was recorded at Deception studio, my personal studio and mixed and mastered on Achillman studios in Greece. The lyrics were written by Alex for once more and the layout was created by Incense Art. The album was meant to be released last year but due to some problems with the label, it will be released by Satanath and Sevared Records on the 18th of May. The idea behind the album is a trip in the darkest places of the human mind and soul and musically I’m mainly influenced by old school death metal bands such as Incantation and Immolation.

"The new album is more brutal than 'Morbid Supremacy.' In my opinion is more straight to the point with less atmospheric parts and more aggressive guitars. Achilleas worked a lot on the sound and he impressed me once again. In general I think that I couldn't be happier with the final product and I can't wait to hear some feedback from the fans. I am already working on the third album and I believe that it will be one more step forward for Demonic Obedience. I cannot promise anything for live shows once I am the only member of the project but you never know. Time will tell." More...

Monolith Wielder Signs With Argonauta Records

Argonauta Records is thrilled to welcome a new great act from the States onto its roster: Pittsburgh's Monolith Wielder.

Drawing as much influence from the early 90's Pacific Northwest, as the Maryland doom of that same era, Monolith Wielder is a quartet made up of several veterans of the Pittsburgh music scene.

Formed in 2014 by Molasses Barge guitarist Justin Gizzi, longtime friend and percussionist Ben Zerbe (Halo's Grace/Mandrake Project), and singer/guitarist Gero von Dehn (Von Dane/Zom), the three began working up the material that would comprise their first studio effort. Later rounded out by bassist Ray Ward, the group started performing live that fall, and headed into Plus Minus Recording studio on Pittsburgh's South Side in January 2015.

With engineer Jason Jouver at the helm, ten songs were completed in the studio, and later sent off to Jack Endino at Soundhouse in Seattle for Mastering. Monolith Wielder's debut album is scheduled to be released by Autumn 2016.

More information is expected soon. More...

Elaborates mainman Matt Fox, "Hello friends. Here are a couple of Summer dates in the US and Canada, followed by four dates in Japan with our dear friends in Endzweck. See yous there? Excellent. We're looking forward to it. Very Mean Pete of Remembering Never/xBishopx will be fronting us because Henry Rollins has called in sick. It happens. If there are any more shows this year, they will be sporadic and most likely in unlikely places so come rage while you can. The rest of the year we will be writing new music so we can attempt to cut our usual time in-between full-length albums by one full year. Exciting, ain't it? We think so, too. Love. Respect. Hate. Piss. Moan. Sincerely Hated, Your friendly neighborhood Shai Hulud."
