Migration Fest 2016 Announced
20 Buck Spin and Gilead Media will join forces in Summer 2016 to present the inaugural Migration Festival in Olympia, Washington. Jointly conceived by the two labels, Migration Fest will primarily showcase bands from each label's roster, as well as select other affiliated and respected artists.
The festival is set to take place at the historic Capitol Theater in downtown Olympia on August 12th, 13th, and 14th. Confirmed bands include Auroch, The Body & Krieg collaborative performance, Christian Mistress, Dead To A Dying World, False, Fórn, Full Of Hell, Khemmis, Kowloon Walled City, Krallice, Mutilation Rites, Nightfell, Obsequiae, Pale Chalice, Thou, Vastum, Vhol, And Yellow Eyes.
Approximately six additional bands, including some headliners, will be announced later. There will also be separate after-shows to occur at a smaller local venue. Ticket information, including price and on-sale date, will be announced in the near future.
20 Buck Spin founder David Adelson comments: "I'd heard Adam (Bartlett, Gilead Media boss) was thinking of coming West to do the next iteration of Gilead Fest. I'd been thinking of doing something similar myself for years but never had, and so suggested we join up and do something together. Adam was immediately receptive and the idea for Migration Festival was born right then. Olympia felt right since I'm already based here, and because of its small size and walkability this is a great place to have it, both for locals, and for out-of-towers.
Says Adam Bartlett, "After two successful installments of my own Gilead Fest in this small Wisconsin town it seemed like the time was right to branch out and try something different. The idea to work with Dave and his label on a collaborative event makes perfect sense given our similar music backgrounds and diverse, but complimentary label families. And Olympia serves as the perfect central location for this type of festival." More...
Negative_Crush Releasing "Invisible Weapons"
Sann Francisco, CA post metal outfit Negative_Crush will release a debut album titled "Invisible Weapons" through Sold.Grey.Sky.Recordings in February.
The record is a monolithic slab of guitar driven machine noise, powered by the angst generated when human connections become meaningless, and nearly every song is heavy enough to break your heart to pieces.
Despite the blackened layers of distortion, the songs still retain a structural core that nearly conforms to pop music. The first single "Starling" can be heard below. Tyler Newman of Negative_Crush comments:
“My ultimate goal with the record is to make people want to jump off their roof. In my mind, it’s as close to emotional quicksand as any record I’ve ever heard. There’s a universal need to see one’s pain inflicted on others, and this album is the only one I’ve ever made that expresses it so completely.”
1. Your Punishment Begins At Home
2. The Capitol Of Pain
3. Starling
4. Twilight Hospitals
5. Monokrom
6. The Ghost Of Myself
7. Your Secret Is Safe With Me
8. Splendid Chemicals
9. Disappear Here
10. Invisible Weapons

Sunday Old School: Tool
Metal music is full of weird and wonderful bands. Though many outsiders may see the genre as simple or worse, “just noise,” there have been many groups to utilise the sound with musical intellect such as Sigh and Dream Theater to name but two. Today’s featured band is another to create a sound all of their own and gain a rabid following in the metal community, one of the biggest, though maybe shortest names in the alternative metal area, Tool.
Tool began life in 1990, after all their founding members had moved to Los Angeles the previous decade. Whilst two founding members, Adam Jones and Paul D’Amour had originally come to the city to find work in the film industry, the other two, Danny Carey and Maynard James Keenan (the latter an art graduate who had been making a living remodelling pet stores,) had previously tasted what it was like being part of a cult musical act in their time with Green Jelly. Keenan and Jones would meet in 1989 through a mutual friend and decided to put together their own band, jamming together while actively seeking a rhythm section. Carey would be the next member to join, convenient since he lived above Keenan and had previously met Jones through his old friend, Tom Morello. Introductions were to play a key role again, as the lineup was completed when D’Amour, who he met via a friend, joined the ranks. More...
