Pit Stories: The Healing Power Of Beer

We've all got that one venue or record shop we fondly recall from back in a time when people bought music and mallcore wasn't a thing.

For this week's Pit Story, vocalist Dan Cleary of Striker not only reminisces fondly about one such mythical place, but also shares a tale of the amazing healing power of beer below. Photo courtesy of Dana Zuk.

A long time ago here in Edmonton we had this awesome venue/record store/screen printing place. We played some of our first shows ever there in the back of the Quonset Hut that was “Octopus Ink.” We used to go there and buy bullet belts (before they were being sold at the mall for posers) and rare vinyl like the $140 “Projects In The Jungle” by Pantera hanging up on the wall that none of us ever wanted to cough up the money for.

One night in particular things were getting a little rowdier than normal. We were about half way through our set and the pit in this tiny back room was getting intense. As usual everyone was good and drunk, there was always a lot of tailgating outside the place because it wasn't exactly... lets say... a "secure" venue. So the song kicks in, a fast one (can't remember which) and I watch in amazement as this short haired borderline black out drunk kid gets literally knocked the fuck out by some big league moshing.

Looking back at it maybe we should have stopped the song and made sure he was OK, but luckily for us there was a doctor in the room. A doctor who proceeded to lift this poor kid up, his eyes half shut clearly concussed, and pour beer down his throat. We thought for sure we were witnessing the final moments of a thrash youth, but to our surprise he sprung back to life and continued to mosh, albeit a little slower than before.

That's the first and only time I've seen someone get straight up knocked unconscious in a pit, and it turns out like everything else, beer is the answer.

The Edmonton heavy metal act will release new album "Stand in the Fire" on February 5th, 2016. Follow the latest info on Striker over at Facebook here. More...

That Metal Show Cancelled

Eddie Trunk from That Metal Show has released the following statement about the show being cancelled, but potentially still appearing in the future on a different network:

"A message to the loyal fans of That Metal Show from Eddie, Jim & Don: we are sorry to report that VH1 Classic will not continue to make any new episodes of That Metal Show.

"It has been an incredible run of eight years, roughly 125 episodes and some really cool specials. The global response to TMS has been simply amazing, and we will be eternally grateful for the support from the rock and metal fans that have showed us so much love. We truly would have never made it as long as we did without you!

"A huge thanks also to the great crews we had over the years both in NYC and Los Angeles, to our producer Jeff Baumgardner, and to all the executives at VH1. And finally, thanks to the hundreds of artists that joined us on our set, had fun with us, shared their stories and many, many laughs. From the biggest names in rock history, to the up-and-comers: we thank you all for being a part of it.

"Of course we very much want to keep That Metal Show alive, and with the blessing of VH1 Classic, we’ve got the keys to the show and are currently searching for a new home. We’re not sure where we’ll land, but we hope to be back in our studio and your living rooms as soon as possible. In the meantime, keep an eye out for us on the road and come say, 'Hello.'

The Erkonauts Releasing "I Did Something Bad"

The Swiss groove metal deviants from The Erkonauts signed with Kaotoxin Records in August 2015 for the worldwide release of "I Did Something Bad," which was originally debuted as a DIY effort a year ago.

The album was mixed and mastered by Samael's Drop, who lent his little-known ukulele skills to the recording. The band, which features two ex-members of Sybreed, has toured across Europe, the U.S. and Asia. The Kaotoxin Records reissue of "I Did Something Bad" features two brand new tracks not included on the original release and drops February 12th.

Sumerian Records Announces 10 Year Tour

Sumerian Records marks its 10 year anniversary with a four week tour featuring five of the Los Angeles labels’ bands: Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya, After The Burial, Erra and Bad Omens.

“Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya and After The Burial have all played a crucial role in the new wave of progressive, heavy music and in the pedigree of Sumerian,” said label founder, Ash Avildsen.

Ash goes on to say, “They are some of the most genuine, hard-working and talented musicians I have had the privilege to work with. I vividly remember first seeing all three of them play together at a tiny legion hall in a small Illinois town when Sumerian was less than a year old and they were all unsigned. I can proudly say that without Born of Osiris, Veil of Maya and After The Burial together on the label, Sumerian would not have become the entity it is today. I am honored to have this Midwest menagerie carrying the 10 Year Tour and excited for our newcomers Erra and Bad Omens. Thank you to all of the fans who support the bands and the music. Without you, none of this would be possible. See you in the pit.” More...

Oceans Of Slumber Releases New Music Video

Oceans Of Slumber, the genre defying Texan quintet, just delivered yet another dose of dark, boundless progressive metal with a brand new video for the track "Suffer The Last Bridge."

This new song is taken off the band's forthcoming Century Media debut, "Winter," due out March 4th, 2016 and up for digital pre-order here. Drummer Dobber Beverly also comments:

"Living is an imperfect consequence of being born. We are fallible creatures and we must adapt and learn to overcome our fear of living. 'Suffer the Last Bridge' is the call to embrace your imperfections and walk away from the things you can't change. The video follows Cammie on a contemplative journey through the beautiful Texas landscapes we call home.

"It's her journey to a place of realization and the acceptance of change and loss. And eventually finds her walking away from the unavoidable consequence of being alive. Musically we wanted to write a huge arena style melodic metal song. Combining all the elements of what we do into this brief glimpse of a larger story. An Etude. A picture. We have many directions to take and many more surprises for you." More...

Knifeworld Releasing New Album

London-based psychedelic octet Knifeworld is extremely pleased to announce third studio album "Bottled Out Of Eden" is due for release via InsideOut Music on April 22nd, 2016.

The follow-up to 2014's "The Unravelling," new album "Bottled Out Of Eden" is a subtler but more immediate record than any other Knifeworld release. At times beautiful and uplifting & at others melancholic, haunting and otherworldly, the album remains surprisingly accessible. Frontman Kavus Torabi had this to say:

"After 'The Unravelling,' which took over a year to complete, we deliberately wanted to change the variables. To alter the approach in order to make something different. I love The Unravelling but it was a very difficult record to make. Rather than spending so long in the studio, constructing, arranging, recording, re-recording and adding layers of additional instruments and noises, this time round we wanted something rawer, more live sounding."

Torabi continues: "Once we had the title, 'Bottled Out Of Eden', the songs came very quickly. For me, the title has three possible interpretations and all the songs fall under at least one of them. I always like to have a definite theme, it allows you to map out the territory making it far easier to identify which songs that will or won't fit with the overarching idea giving the record a far greater cohesion. Anthrax Discusses Recording "For All Kings"

When it came time for thrash outfit Anthrax to start the writing and recording process for the follow up to 2011's Grammy-nominated "Worship Music," there was no doubt that the entire band wanted producer Jay Ruston there from the start.

Ruston first worked with Anthrax during the final stages of "Worship Music," but for this new album, he's been in the room every step of the way.

"He's become an intregal part of our process, that's for sure," said Anthrax's Scott Ian. "It's cliche, but he really has become a sixth member."

In this video clip below, Ian, Frank Bello, Charlie Benante, Joey Belladonna and Jonathan Donais talk about Ruston's invaluable contribution to the making of "For All Kings," due out February 26th (Megaforce/North America, Nuclear Blast/International). More...

InnerWish Streaming "Rain Of A Thousand Years"

Greek melodic metallers InnerWish will release the new self-titled album on March 18th in Europe and North America via Ulterium Records. The album will be available on CD, LP, Tape and digital. Bickee Music will issue the album in Japan on March 30th.

Today, the band is streaming the new track The song "Rain Of A Thousand Years," which can be heard in the player below.

"InnerWish" was mixed by Fredrik Nordström and Henrik Udd at Studio Fredman (In Flames, Dimmu Borgir, Hammerfall) and mastered by Peter In De Betou (Arch Enemy, Opeth, Amon Amarth). The artwork of the album was created by Felipe Machado Franco (Blind Guardian, Rhapsody Of Fire, Xandria) and the design was done by Jan Yrlund (Korpiklaani, Apocalyptica, Manowar).

The band commented on the new album: "This is the first album with our new lineup, and we hope this lineup will be unchanged for many years since we now feel stronger, more confident and sure about ourselves than ever before. For those reasons we chosed 'InnerWish' as the title of our new album, because it represents us in the most exact way. We are very proud of this album. It might sound very common, but it's the truth for us: this is the best InnerWish album so far! Heavy, aggressive, modern, melodic and diverse at the same time, with all the classical InnerWish elements, combined with some new ones. It might have been 6 years since the release of 'No turning back' but all the difficult times we've been through made us stronger and the result is this new, fifth album of InnerWish. We are back for good!"

The track list for "InnerWish" is:

Villainy Streaming New Album In Full

From time to time, the metal scene gives birth to challenging bands, and the Netherlands' Villainy is one of those artists who have been willing to explore new extreme metal shores with great balance, and without compromising the mood and utter darkness they initially offered. Now, Villainy present the second full-length album, "Villainy II: Dim," set for North American release on February 12th, 2016 via Listenable Records. The album can be streamed in full via InvisibleOranges.com at this location or in the player below.

Villainy's new album features three chapters. Each chapter has a different conceptual twist to the same philosophical questions - essentially, life in all its forms. The variety in musical styles and lyrics are part of this concept. The songs are permeated with even more musical variety than ever, which takes an important role in Villainy's form of eclectic heavy music. This is the most extreme songwriting the band has ever churned out in all ways: heavier, darker, faster, but also somewhat mellower, more ecstatic, and slower. Influences have widened as minds have opened.

The track list for the release is as follows:

1. A Familiar Wind
2. Nebulous Chasm
3. Dwaalspoor
4. Jewel
5. Only I Have the Light of Lights
6. Valley
7. The Soul Is Untouched
8. Inside Her Hide and Fire
9. And the Gold of Rebirth
10. Herschapen
