Best New Metal Bands Of 2015 Explored

Every year our annual staff awards include a vote for the best new metal band to arrive with a debut full-length. To make the cut, these fresh young outfits have to blow us away and remind us why we love this genre to begin with.

There were a horde of bands nominated for the “best newcomer” category in 2015, and ultimately the title went to U.S. outfit Gruesome, who happened to be in my list of contender.

Since our focus is on helping metal fans find new bands, we're going to take a closer look at all the bands who were in contention for the award, starting with my personal top bands. Here's the 5 groups who just got started in 2015 that you should be getting into as the new year begins:

Alkaloid

Fans of Obscura and Blotted Science got an unexpected treat this year when several members of prominent European metal bands came together to release a new album under the banner of Alkaloid. Totally forgoing the label route altogether, Alkaloid's debut self release features the talents of names such as Linus Klausenitzer, Hannes Grossmann, and Christian Münzner.

As might be expected by a band with that sort of pedigree, “The Malkuth Grimoire” is an absolute monster of a release (check out our review here). It's technical, it's progressive, it's melodic, and it's even a little gothic. The end result is some very top notch death metal with a sound you aren't going to hear elsewhere, and it absolutely demands a follow-up release!

You can follow Alkaloid at Facebook here and stream all of the stellar debut full-length album “The Malkuth Grimoire” below.

Xantam Re-Issuing Debut Demo

Blood Harvest Records is proud to present a reissue of Xantam's debut demo, "LifeDeathBeyond," on cassette tape. The label comments:

"Originally self-released last year and now set for international release on January 25th, Xantam's 'LifeDeathBeyond' is a true gem of the black/death underground, both birthed from ancient times and exuding a freshness quite unlike anything else around.

"The work of one Xantam the Beholder, 'LifeDeathBeyond' creates a swirling, spiraling vortex of scabrous-yet-shimmering decibels, rabidly raw yet lucidly played. Its unique locus is that nethervoid of when death metal was beginning to expand its creative boundaries and black metal's second wave had yet to bloom, where both subgenres were feeding off each other's respective growing pains and birth pangs.

"And yet, Xantam even more uniquely locates corridors rarely explored by those same pioneers 20-plus years ago, piling high emotive lead-work and hypnotic synth motifs, all the while guiding the listener along down an otherworldly path that's epic in scope and engaging in execution. Sure, it may be 'rough around the edges,' as the euphemism goes, but the sheer boldness of vision displayed by Xantam on its very first demo suggests boundless brilliance for the future.

"Blood Harvest has indeed paid witness to that brilliance, and will release the band's imminent debut album, Astral Dominion, on vinyl, CD, and digital formats during the summer of 2016." More...

Warbringer Kicking Off North American Tour

Warbringer will launch a new North American tour in New York City on January 5th, 2016 at The Gramercy Theatre. This co-headliner trek with Sweden's Enforcer will be almost two months and cover the U.S. and Canada, along with opening acts Exmortus and Cauldron.

This is the first domestic tour Warbringer has done since the fall of 2013 when the group opened for Overkill and Kreator in support of last album, "Warbringer IV: Empires Collapse." This is the band's only tour planned for 2016 as Warbringer will continue to write and plan to record a fifth album later in the year.

"The band sounds fucking killer right now and I can't wait to get out there and assault the stage," comments singer John Kevill. "It is worth mentioning that I've seen a number of 'people leaving bands' news pieces recently. Most often they cite the complete impossibly of making a living playing music, and the difficulty of the touring lifestyle. Well, I can say from experience that all of that is true.

"It's tough, there's no denying that. But that isn't what I want to talk about here. What I want to talk about is what has kept me going for the 10+ years and 1000+ concerts I have done with this band I started right after finishing high school. I've seen more of the world than I ever thought was possible, met thousands of people from all walks of life, and from them learned much of the world. Among other things, I learned to remain humble and to always remember what an honor and privilege it is to perform songs I made with my friends, to complete strangers who live thousands of miles away who will come out on a work night to see me and my fellow band dudes banging our heads. Too many people lose sight of this. So that is why I am still here, and why I will see you guys on each of the 47 dates of this tour. Be ready. I am." More...

Surya Signs With Argonauta Records

Argonauta Records just checked in with this announcement about inking a record deal with post-metal band Surya:

"Stoked to start the new year with a new very promising name being part of our family. London, U.K. based Surya are authors of a huge instrumental post metal tinged doom, where music is a mix of heaviness and subtle sonic landscapes, ugliness and beauty. Earth, Water, Air and Fire - all in its eternal dance of creation and destruction, bringing light through understanding the darkness.

"After releasing one-track demo in 2015 (self recorded at Overdrive Studios in Deptford) and playing few shows around London, Surya went to Bear Bites Horse studio in may 2015 to record their first full-length album.

"The band was formed with the idea of exploring the depths of music rather than staying on the surface, connecting with themselves and everything around them. For Surya, music and art in general are powerful tools for conveying ideas, like human/animal liberation and going back to nature, and a whole spectrum of emotions."

About the collaboration with Argonauta Records, Surya had this to say: “We are really excited to join Argonauta Records, looking forward to releasing our first full-length, 'Apocalypse A.D.' It is an honour to share the label with such great bands from all over the world!” More...
