Baroness Announces Art Exhibit
Baroness’ John Dyer Baizley and graphic artist Marald Van Haasteren, who partnered on the artwork for new album "Purple," will feature original artwork from the release as well as other individual and collaborative works in a February art exhibit dubbed “Desperation Burns: The Artwork of Purple.”
The exhibit is set to take place at Co Exhibitions in Minneapolis (1101 Stinson Blvd #2). The opening reception, which both Baizley and Haasteren will attend, is slated for February 6th at 7 PM central.
“Marald and I have a long history as friends and artists, and we’re excited to show our work together, most of which was made for the recently released Baroness album, 'Purple,'” explains Baizley. “Marald and I have worked in parallel over the past decade or more, creating covers and images within and around the punk/HC community, and we’re thrilled to finally hang some of our work together. We worked relentlessly on the images and layout for 'Purple,' and would love to share some of this process, in the form of an exhibition of our work in various formats.”
Baizley painted the cover art for "Purple," which will be featured at the exhibit, while Van Haasteren created the multiple interior illustrations as well as the visuals that accompany the various song premieres from the new album. Borknagar Comments On Missing Member
Borknagar has checked in with this statement about Andreas Hedlund (Vintersrog) being absent from the band's recent promo photos and music video:
"As you all saw already we made a video for 'Winter Thrice' and we made sure to grab some photos at the same time. I’ve uploaded them all to the Borknagar Flickr account, and will show some here for you also.
"We started planning the video shoot at Midgard Historical Centre at Borre sometime in September and soon agreed that we had to take the opportunity to get some band pictures in between the video takes. Twitchy Films was our first choice for the video, they also made 'The Earthling' from 'Urd.' We also approached Martine Petra about the pictures and being an old friend she agreed to help us out.
"The original plans also included Andreas and we were all very eager to meet again for laughs and drinks. It was in early October that the message came from Andreas that he was suffering from complications after his ear surgery and the doctor had given him a no-travel order. At this point we were very determined to make a video and decided to go ahead and make the best out of it. To our fortune Kris was able to join the set and with that enabled us to make a proper 'Winter Thrice' video. More...
Myrkur Comments On Death Threats
The one-woman metal project Myrkur was nominated as one of the best new metal bands of 2015 in our year-end staff awards. While she's been receiving lots of attention, not all of it has been of a positive nature. Myrkur has issued this statement about turning off the ability to get in touch via Facebook:
"I know that some of you have noticed you can no longer send me private messages. The reason for this is I am getting tired of the death threats and hate emails. Believe it or not but that shit looses it's charm after a while.
"I am of course sad that I then no longer can receive personal letters from supporters + fan-art in private messages, but please continue to post your beautiful pieces on this page or to my instagram @myrkurmyrkur." More...

Sunday Old School: Evildead
Thrash metal must have given the world more bands in its heyday than any other field. So many of the groups in the genre have released classic albums, or at least good ones from "Reign in Blood" by Slayer to "Angel Rat" from Voivod. Much like the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that inspired it, the thrash scene also gave us plenty of great bands that didn’t receive much attention or have been shuffled away but can now be uncovered and cherished. Today we’ll look at one of these bands, namely the Los Angeles based socio-political thrashers, Evildead.
Evildead was formed in 1988 when guitarist Juan Garcia decided to leave the speed metal band Agent Steel as well as Abattoir, taking bass player Mel Sanchez with him from the latter group, as well as recruiting vocalist, Phil Flores, guitar player, Albert Gonzales and drummer, Rob Alaniz. Garcia was looking for something where he could express his interest in hardcore music and thrash metal, which was present but not at the forefront of Agent Steel material and so decided to forge a new outfit, taking their name from the cult Sam Raimi film, The Evil Dead. Holy Grail Premieres New Song "No More Heroes"
Los Angeles-based heavy metal warriors Holy Grail premieres a new song entitled "No More Heroes", taken from the upcoming new album "Times of Pride and Peril", which will be out in stores via Prosthetic Records on February 12th, 2016.
Says vocalist James Paul Luna of the song: "Conspiracy or not, heavy shit is going down in the world, and we can’t survive battling it alone. ‘No More Heroes‘ is about the evils of tyranny and self-will, where only strength in numbers can persevere. We’re all in this together, for the win. With that being said, we’re very pumped to be hitting the road with the mighty Black Tusk this spring. Together, we will wave the flag of heavy metal across North America, and together we will shred in the name of heavy metal. Stay hard and see you soon."
Check out now "No More Heroes" below.
