Pit Stories: Respect The Stage

Following on from last week's tale of a fan being chastised by the performing band, today's entry in the ever-growing Pit Story catalog also features a band laying down the law on an unruly participant.

Today's story comes courtesy of Empyrean Throne vocalist Andrew Knudsen, and concerns respecting the band's space. Stage crawling/diving is all well and good - so long as the band is on board!

Andrew recalls the story of opening for Nile:

Our shows tend to get crazy and violent. People get wrecked in the pit area, glass gets broken if you’re not looking after your drink. Our fans are a wild bunch. We encourage rabid crowd participation. However, we take our performance very seriously. It is a ritual. There is a spiritual intent with our shows, and when we are on stage, it is treated as sacred ground.

We bring a lot of stage paraphernalia to each show. We have an altar with actual animal bones, war banners, tons of candles, a ritual dagger, blood, and tons of other trinkets aside from our gear. Because of this allotment we don’t invite fans on stage. Outside of performing, we spend a lot of our personal free time and money on constructing—as well as maintaining—these items. So when we perform we also demand that the audience respect the stage, its contents, and performers.

Last February, when we opened for Nile at the Grove of Anaheim, some young and quite hammered kid kept trying to force his way on stage and pull at various members’ boots and legs during our set. This guy was raging, he was the finest specimen of filth that evening. Totally cool until he climbed up on stage. I’m not sure what he was trying to accomplish, he wasn’t there to stage dive or crowd surf, he was just there flailing around like a lunatic.

From what I recall, he tried to grab my incense censor and part of our altar before, literally grinding up on the leg of one of our members. At that point I grabbed him by the neck and threw him into the audience, who did not make an effort to catch him. They cheered instead. After the show the young lad came up to our merch booth and apologized for his tomfoolery, and proceeded to buy one of every item from our store. We thanked him for coming out and supporting us. It’s something we still laugh about today. I guess the moral here is this, support the band and get into the music, but also respect the stage and the performers on it because we will protect ourselves and our property at all costs.

Empyrean Throne's new album "Chaosborne" will be self-released this coming January 24th, 2017. Telling the story of a hapless Templar knight in medieval Europe and his subsequent decent into the realm of Chaos, the album offers eleven solemn hymns to unbecoming. More...

Emptiness Streams Full New Album

Belgian experimental death and black metal band Emptiness is now streaming new album, "Not For Music," online in full via the playlist below.

Regarding this new album, the band comments: "With Emptiness, the debate revolves around the way to categorize it. Yet, not being like others is our essence. In such a vast universe, and confronted to endless sources of inspiration, we should all be our own selves. This title is a kind of provocation, but also a way for us to say that 'nothingness' is our music."

"Not For Music" was recorded at Blackout Studio, produced by Jeordie White (Marilyn Manson), and mixed by Sean Beavan (Nine Inch Nails). The album will be released by Season of Mist worldwide on January 20th and features the following track listing:

1. Meat Heart
2. It Might Be
3. Circle Girl
4. Your Skin Won't Hide You
5. Digging The Sky

Miozän Releasing First Album in 16 Years

The German hardcore veterans from Miozän are back after nearly sixteen years away from the recording studio. Founded in 1991, Miozän soon took the underground hardcore scene by storm with first demo tape “Offer Resistance,” which has since then gained a cult status among hardcore enthusiasts.

In 2001, after releasing "Thorn in Your Side," the group disbanded and went out to start new musical projects like Souls On Fire, I Defy ,and Cracks & Scars. Eight years later the group reunited just to play a special show in Leipzig to celebrate the 40th anniversary of an old companion and roadie. The spark was there, yet it wasn’t enough to ignite the fire to write new songs and tour again.

It was only in 2014, when Miozän played a special show to celebrate the reopening of Juze-Walsrode club, that founding members Frank and Kuddel decided to bring back the band and put together a new record.

For various reasons, the duo couldn’t count with the help of their original line-up so they recruited Kniffel and Tomek for guitars and drums, respectively. Recorded and mixed by Eike Freese and Alex Dietz, new effort “Surrender Denied” successfully manages to recapture the spirit and sound present in those early days and sees Miozän pouring a strong and critical message over some pummeling rhythms and furiously heavy riffs. Argonauta Records is thrilled announce that the label just inked a deal with Italian post sludge group Nudist for new album “Bury the Innocence” to be released on March 20th, 2017.

Crest Of Darkness Posts New Video

Crest Of Darkness today presents the video for "My Black Bride," a special song that Ingar Amlien wanted to dedicate to his wife Laila, who wore a black wedding dress when the couple married over ten years ago.

It is a particularly unusual choice for the band, not only because it is an instrumental, something the band has only recorded on two occasions over the years, but it is also a melodic, deeply atmospheric piece, totally different from the band's usual black / death metal sound.

Ingar Amlien comments: “I wanted to write a special song for Laila for a long time. She has supported me and my work for so many years, and without her I really don’t know where I would be today, and I knew right from the start that if I was to create this piece it would have to be totally honest. Something personal, and not the kind of rose-tinted love song that people tend to expect when you write a song dedicated to the love of your life.

"I tried to capture the feeling of romance and happiness, but at the same time I wanted to touch on something more 'forbidden' – the dark side if you like to think of it like that. Like most couples we have been through many experiences in the time we’ve shared together, both good and bad. But, unlike most couples, my work has always involved being 'in touch' with both life and death, something Laila has always been very aware of, so the difficult times take on a darker significance. White Willow Announces New Album "Future Hopes"

Laser's Edge has confirmed the release date for "Future Hopes," the seventh full-length from eclectic Norwegian prog quintet, White Willow, unveiling the album's artwork, track listing, and other details on the record. "Future Hopes" will be issued on CD, vinyl LP and digital formats on March 31st, 2017. Audio samples, preorder info, and more will be issued in the coming days.

"Future Hopes" is the band's first album since 2011's well-received "Terminal Twilight" and it sees the outfit exploring some of the most "progressive" territory ventured into to date, with several lengthy tracks and more instrumental passages than the band is usually known for. Musically, the album builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, with a modern approach to production. "Future Hopes" also features a heavy use of synthesizers, including the unique textures of the famed Blade Runner synth, the Yamaha CS80.

The "Future Hopes" lineup, which as always is a loose constellation of musicians with multi-instrumentalists Jacob Holm-Lupo and Mattias Olsson at the core, sees the return of several White Willow stalwarts, including flautist Ketil Einarsen (Jaga Jazzist, Motorpsycho), keyboardist Lars Fredrik Frøislie (Wobbler, Tusmørke), and bassist Ellen Andrea Wang (Pixel, Manu Katché Quartet). The singer is however a new arrival. Venke Knutson is best known in her native Norway More...

Hadal Signs With Sliptrick Records

Sliptrick Records added Italian death/doom metal act Hadal for a debut full length album.

At the end of 2009, the Hadal project emerged from the ashes of the band So Cold in an Italian town named Trieste. While the earlier band was inspired by the Finnish Gothic Metal movement, the new ensemble tried to find a more personal view in an extreme musical landscape. Hadal’s core members wanted to merge atmospheric verses and dark metal riffs to create a slow groove with melodic yet powerful guitars. The group sound was completed with a special vocal style, using both a clean and sometimes raw voice to convey different emotions.

Live performances have been enthusiastically greeted and so following the recording of the promo, "The Obscure I," Hadal are now working hard finishing the debut full-length album to be released soon on Sliptrick Records. More...
