Pit Stories: Mob Justice

After that crazy tale of a chainsaw clear out last week we're back again for more heavy metal pit mayhem!

A familiar theme arises this week in the form of a cautionary tale. We've heard plenty of times in the past about you should always respect the stage and do your best not to piss off the band, but it's not a lesson that always seems to sink in for all metal fans.

This week vocalist / keyboardist Joseph Michael of Witherfall shares a tale of a New York state show where a crowd had to go all mob justice on one unruly asshole who wanted to ruin it for everybody.

Joseph recalls the events like this:

I was at a show in upstate NY a while back at a place called Albies. The place was known for being a cool place to catch local and touring metal bands. A band called the Blob Mob was on stage tearing up some classic metal and the pit was happening on the floor. All of a sudden a drunk psycho steps up on stage and smacks the “Blob” in the head with a beer bottle, sending shards of broken glass, blood and shitty beer all over the stage...

The “Blob” was a well known and loved local singer who also happened to be at least 350 pounds and was not happy. Members of the audience grabbed the unlucky assailant and carried him outside and beat the living shit out of him until the police arrived. I made my way out the back door and hid until the cops left, as I was not of legal age. After all the chaos died down and the blood and beer was mopped up the band went back on stage and killed it. Great night.

California group Witherfall is set to release new album "Nocturnes And Requiems" on February 10th, which is dedicated to the life of Adam Sagan who passed on December 7th, 2016 during the final stages of production. Check out a track below, and you can follow the latest on Witherfall via Facebook here. More...

True Strength Signs To Roxx Records

Roxx Records is very excited to welcome U.S. metal band True Strength to the roster for a proper re-issue of latest album “Steel Evangelist."

True Strength's sophomore album "Steel Evangelist" was independently released digitally back in May. Upon that original release, "Steel Evangelist" suffered from production quality issues due to budgetary restrictions.

However, all of this changed when the band was signed by Roxx Records as Bill Roxx put the band in touch with engineer Cliffy Walker (guitarist of Christian punk band The Huntingtons) to remaster the album, and this new version is like night and day in comparison to the original.

Roxx Records will be releasing the “Steel Evangelist” album in CD format for the first time ever with completely new cover artwork designed by Scott Waters. The updated and remastered version will also be re-released digitally with the new cover artwork and will be called "Steel Evangelist - Roxx Records Edition." This new edition will be released everywhere on February 17th, 2017. More...

70K TOM May Be Christofer Johnsson's Final Show

Christofer Johnsson of Therion will be performing at the impending 70K Tons Of Metal cruise, but the musician will then be taking time off performing and recording due to a serious health issue. He comments:

"Possibly my final live performance ever on 70,000 Tons Of Metal. Over 2 weeks ago I started to get HUGE pains in my arm, shoulder and back. It hurt worse if I lay down and got worse by each day. In the end I could not even sleep in bed anymore and had to sit up sleeping in the sofa every night.

"Medicare in Sweden don't work anymore. Equipment is great and the doctors are competent and do their best, but due to the massive population increase, the capacity and medical infrastructure has lacked behind each year and just seem to get worse and worse. After I got in contact with the emergency, it took me eight (8) days before I got to see a physiotherapist and he could not make a proper diagnosis without a MRI scan of the neck. It would have taken up to a month before I would get a MRI done and then it can take another month before I get the results.

"At this point I slept worse and less each night and when I tried to play guitar, I would only play half a song before the pain made me stop + my motorics got so bad that I was even physically unable to play most songs.

"In order to not have to cancel 70.000 Tons of Metal and in order to faster get a diagnosis and get it cured, I (upon recommendation) decided to fly to Moscow and have it done there. They are at the same technical and competence level like in Sweden, but have capacity to treat patients immediately. So I got an appointment straight away, flew there and got a fantastic care with not only MRI, but also got to see a neurologist, physiotherapists and specialists.

"So I got a diagnosis the same day and it seems I have two spinal disc herniations in my neck, one really bad and one small that could get worse. In plain English this means that two of my discs in the neck are worn out (from headbanging and sitting too much in front of computer in the office and the studio) and have cracked so that fluid runs out from it. The fluid put pressure on the nerves in the spinal chord and create pain in shoulder/arm/back and distort mobility in the right arm. More...

Lung Flower Posts New Video

Vancouver's sludgy stoner doom / grunge hybrid Lung Flower just posted a new psychedelic music video for "Beyond Burnt Out" in support of latest album "Effigy" released during in 2016. The album is the follow-up to 2014 EP "Death On The Crowsnest" and 2012 debut album "Under A Dying Sun."

Lung Flower comments on the video: "The video was mostly shot in an abandoned house on the outskirts of Abbotsford BC. We chose this location because it was a perfect symbol for the meaning of the song, the purposely literal lyrics conveying the everyday struggle of the modern day city dwelling man.

"Burning the candle at both ends eventually leaves you hollow and empty, like most of this house was. We felt that this house, with its disrepair, a sad shadow of what it probably once was, served as our metaphor for a person trying to walk the edge of the abyss, the edge of alleviation and addiction. Someone who is quite literally Beyond Burnt Out." More...

Harken Calling It Quits

Wesley Wyatt and Conner Dugan from Texas prog metal outfit Harken just issued this announcement about deciding to call it a day:

"Sometime last year, after the release of 'Shira,' we got together to discuss the future of Harken. We did some writing to see if we still had any chemistry in the band and, while we did enjoy what we wrote, we decided that continuing in the same fashion as we've always done wouldn't lead to anything productive any time soon.

"Instead of just building up more and more expectation and failure to deliver, we've decided to hang it up with Harken. We had a lot of fun with this project and made quite a few new friends of fans and musicians alike. It was a great learning experience and we're thankful for it. We also can't forget to thank Chris Todd for his amazing contributions vocally.

"We'd like to leave you with the final instrumental we wrote. You haven't heard the last of us as individuals but thank you for all your support." More...

Nova Collective Releasing Album Via Metal Blade

On March 10th, Nova Collective (featuring members of Between the Buried and Me, Haken, Trioscapes, and Cynic) will release debut album, "The Further Side," via Metal Blade Records.

Nova Collective's music can be described as fusion, weaving progressive rock influences with world music, jazz and classical, to create something entirely new that is pure aural candy for prog/jazz fans. For a preview of "The Further Side," the first single "Dancing Machines" can be heard below.

Nova Collective began in 2014 when bassist Dan Briggs (Between the Buried and Me, Trioscapes) and guitarist Richard Henshall (Haken) began exchanging emails about music; before long, a few demos were fleshed out into full arrangements. Drummer Matt Lynch (Trioscapes, Cynic) and keyboardist Pete Jones (ex-Haken) came on board shortly after to finish writing the album.

"The Further Side" was written on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, with Briggs and Lynch in America and Henshall and Jones in England, sharing session files until the group could get together at the beginning of 2015 to record with engineer Jamie King (Between the Buried and Me, The Contortionist). Mixed by Rich Mouser (Neal Morse, Transatlantic). More...

Anthrax Releasing "For All Kings" Box Set

Available exclusively in North America and released in conjunction with the band's upcoming spring co-headline tour with Killswitch Engage, the limited edition Anthrax "For All Kings" 7-inch box set is coming via Megaforce Records on March 24th.

The set includes a removable lenticular cover and contains 10 7-inch vinyl discs featuring 20 songs - the 11 finished album tracks, two brand new covers (The White Stripes' "Black Math" and the classic Kansas song "Carry On"), six demos from the FAK track listing, and "Vice of the People," a bonus track previously released only in Japan and now making its North American vinyl debut.

The original album cover art sketch by Alex Ross is also part of this package, as well as a download card enabling the holder to access the box set's tracklisting for free.

"Doing a box set edition of 'For All Kings' was something that we've always wanted to do," said Charlie Benante, who worked closely with Heusser and Thompson on the box set's artwork. "We wanted to do something special, something that was so much more than the original release, and have it be fun for our audience when they open it up, just be floored by the different colored vinyl, the artwork, everything that's inside. And we think we've done that." More...

Riotous Indignation Premieres "The End" Video

Everybody remember Riotous Indignation? A few months back we had the pleasure of bringing you some thrashing hardcore from the Chicago outfit with the "This World" single, and today we've got a killer new video as well.

Check out our exclusive premiere of "The End" below, taken off the band's latest EP release "Violentus Musicae."

Considering current events, the clip couldn't arrive at a more topical moment as it tackles the endless cycle of gun violence in the band's home town. The video was directed by vocalist/guitarist Mike Repel, who had this to say:

"This song and video were inspired by the ongoing and pervasive gun violence that has been a growing problem for decades in Chicago. This song is actually written from the victims perspective in a drive-by shooting. As he faces his demise, he reflects on the misdeeds he has done, and contemplates the disposition of his eternal soul."

This Chicago-based crossover institution was formed in 2015 by Repel (author of The Music Industry Self Help Guide) and Bob Clayton, who were previous band mates in a metal project called Instant Decay circa 2006-2008.

Riotous Indignation spent a majority of its first year writing and refining several songs, four of which have been made available on the "Violentus Musicae" EP, which was mixed by Nick Bellmore and Mastered by Zeuss.
