Podcast
Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 30
Before we summarize this week’s MetalUnderground.com Official Podcast, your fabulous co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure), who rather enjoys referring to himself in the third person, is about to lazily copy and paste an important notice from last week… and the week before.
“We,” meaning Token Hispanic co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead), are hosting two upcoming ticket giveaways through Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. First comes The Black Dahlia Murder (supported by Suicide Silence) on Monday, October 13th, followed by Attila (supported by Crown The Empire and Like Moths To Flames) on Friday, November 14th.
If interested, please fire an email to podcast@metalunderground.com with one (or both) of the headlining bands in the subject heading and your full name (matching your ID) in the message body.
Additionally, if you’re an unsigned metal band with a kickass song you’d like to hear featured as our weekly intro music, we’d like to hear it! Please contact us via the email address above.
Kicking off this week’s topics, Mike relays the recent announcement by Swedish death metallers Bloodbath regarding the upcoming fourth studio album “Grand Morbid Funeral,” due out November 17th on Peaceville Records. He also shares some thoughts concerning the group’s as-yet-unidentified new vocalist, so pay attention.
Next, it’s - put a sock in it - more Slipknot. Hey, activity in the Iowan legends’ camp is newsworthy, so we’re going to discuss it. This sour little tidbit revolves around the band’s revelation that percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan is designing two identical masks for the new rhythm section, deliberately distinct from the rest. Whether this bit of ritualistic “othering” is the start of a Newstedian hazing campaign is yet to be determined.
Bummed about the disappointing new In Flames album? So were we. Which is why this week we’re overjoyed to gush about “Exit Wounds,” the ripping, thrashing, and successful return to form by The Haunted, a Swedish band that’s done what most of us wish In Flames had. Stay tuned to hear our full thoughts; we hope you agree!

Bloodtruth Is "Surrounded By Blind Bigots"
Italian death metal miscreants Bloodtruth will levy the auditory punishment of debut album, "Obedience," upon the ears of the living this coming Tuesday.
"Obedience" was engineered by Francesco Paoli and Cristiano Trionfera (both of Fleshgod Apocalypse) at Sonic Hammer Studios, mixed and mastered by Italian death metal producer Stefano Morabito of 16th Cellars Studios (Hour of Penance, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Eyeconoclast, Inherit Disease), and is enshrouded with artwork by Colin Marks of Rain Song Design (Exodus, Fleshgod Apocalypse, Kataklysm).
In advance of its impending release, today Gear Gods brings fans and soon-to-be Bloodtruth converts a "Surrounded By Blind Bigots" playthrough video that'll probably make you wish you practiced more. Check it out below.

Old Man Gloom Announces New Album
Profound Lore Records has issued the following announcement about releasing a new album from Old Man Gloom:
"Everyone’s favorite band in the entire universe, namely Old Man Gloom, have completed work on their new album 'The Ape Of God.'
"In what will present itself as some of the most engaging and triumphant work that the simian worshiping collective of Aaron Turner (Isis, Mamiffer, SUMAC), Nate Newton (Converge/Doomriders), Caleb Scofield (Cave In), and Santos Montano have conjured to date, 'The Ape Of God' comprises itself of songs that range within the realm of the eclectic, noisy, ambient and experimental with of course the gargantuan steamroller heaviness that plows and forges its way through this work of monolithic sonic art.
"Basically what one can only expect from the legendary and influential Old Man Gloom, who made their glorious return several years ago to an unsuspecting public with their 'NO' album after an eight year hibernation period.
"To be officially released on Nov 11th on CD/digital via Profound Lore Records and on 2xLP via SIGE, and once again recorded, engineered and mixed by longtime conspirator Kurt Ballou of Converge with mastering done by Brad Boatright of Audiosiege, some tracks set to appear on 'The Ape Of God' include ‘Fist Of Fury,’ ‘The Lash,’ ‘Shoulder Meat,' and ‘Arrows To Our Hearts.’" More...
Robb Reiner Announces Art Exhibition
BBAM! Gallery is proud to present the first ever major gallery exhibition by Robb Reiner, best known as the drummer for iconic metal band, Anvil (re-discovered by millions thanks to the movie "Anvil - The Story of Anvil").
The opening will take place on September 25th, 2014. BBAM! Gallery's Ralph Alfonso also comments:
"Painting had always been a private refuge for Robb, something shared only with an inner circle, until he was encouraged to show his work during the filming for the movie.
"As the head of promotion at Attic Records, I had known Robb since the beginning (I was their publicist) and was stunned by what I saw on screen. How could he have hidden this other talent for so long?
"Years later, I opened a rock’n’roll art gallery and reached out. Robb does not sell his work - was this going to be a problem? No.
"This is a rare opportunity for fans and art lovers to see the paintings up close and off the screen. It is a sampling of a greater body of work; images that we feel cover the broad range of Robb Reiner’s artistry. It is also an opportunity to test the waters in terms of response, logistics, and feedback; in anticipation of more exhibits around the world. It’s just a matter of time.
"But for now, during this exclusive limited engagement; the doors to Robb’s world are open and Robb Reiner himself will be here at the opening vernissage to meet folks, answer questions; but most of all to present his visual world of calmness, solitude and introspection."
More info on the Montreal-based gallery can be found over at Facebook here.

Sleepwave Posts Full Album Online
Sleepwave - the new band from former Underoath singer Spencer Chamberlain and Stephen Bowman - releases debut album "Broken Compass" on September 16th via Epitaph Records. The album is available in full below, courtesy of Altpress.com.
Chamberlain and Bowman gravitated toward one another several years ago, based on their mutual appreciation of bands like Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Filter. "Broken Compass" was produced by David Bendeth (Bring Me The Horizon, Of Mice & Men, All Time Low) and it combines their mutual interests as they deliver the grungy side of rock music through the lens of classic song structure and melody.
Chamberlain states, “Sleepwave is heavy and aggressive, but there’s a lot more to explore….There’s a somber overtone to the album, there’s a lot of sadness, but there is also some hope. Not everyone will love Sleepwave…but if you are upsetting people, they're still responding emotionally all the same.” More...

Foreseen HKI To Release Some "Helsinki Savagery"
20 Buck Spin today confirms the release of a debut album from punishing Finnish crossover quintet, Foreseen HKI. The label comments:
"Following several successful EPs, including 2013's well received Structural Oppression, Finland's Foreseen HKI now break into the international metal scene with their debut LP, Helsinki Savagery.
"An explosive burst of raw crossover, the band effortlessly fuse the 1980s iterations of U.S. thrash and hardcore to create a merciless album of absolute jawbreakers. A distinctly Finnish rawness and hostility, that's been a hallmark of the countries incredible hardcore punk bands since the early '80s, pervades the LP.
"Bringing back a concrete toughness to thrash that's largely been missing for years, on Helsinki Savagery, Foreseen HKI takes their place among the elite of modern crossover bands. Tracks like 'Death Injection,' 'Bonded By United Blood' and 'Both Sides Lose' are infused with a lethal urgency and unrestrained devotion to crafting ideal songs for wild, anarchic live shows.
"Helsinki Savagery documents a band in its hungry, formative prime where the extreme aggression heard on many classic debut albums is captured with terrible certainty. With high speeds and fierce leads that shred, United Forces are back from the dead. Diehard circle pit-dwellers who live by the lessons taught by S.O.D, Nuclear Assault, Integrity, Vio-lence, Cro-Mags, Leeway and Carnivore, your favorite new band is here." More...
Devilment Shoots New Music Video
Witch County England's Devilment - featuring Dani Filth - recently shot a video for the upcoming second single, "Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me," which will be featured on the band's upcoming debut album, "The Great And Secret Show."
Commented director Sam Scott-Hunter: "With this video I really wanted to capture the intensity of the song, and then shove it in your face to get the heart pounding - the visual equivalent of listening to it loud on your headphones in a dark room. So to do that we locked ourselves in a studio in deepest, darkest Suffolk, turned most of the lights out and the volume up, and we didn't come out again until we had that intense groove etched indelibly into the back of the camera.
"It's a dark song, and I wanted that heaviness to come across visually, but there's also an air of mystery and mysticism in what the band are doing, and to capture that we enlisted an incredible dancer, NagaSita, who has a wonderfully different and exotic take on the track. I hope when people watch this, they can turn the lights off, turn it up loud, and enjoy a really intense experience."
Added Dani Filth: "When we approached undertaking a video for the track 'Even Your Blood Group Rejects Me,' the intention was to create something very visually disturbing, yet stunning to look at, in a minimalistic monochrome context. The idea was to really bring out the performance of the track and marry it to phantasmagorical images, all cut to the massive pounding beat. More...
While Heaven Wept Posts New Lyric Video
While Heaven Wept is commemorating it's 25th year with the release of sixth full-length album "Suspended At Aphelion" via Nuclear Blast this October.
Today the band releases the lyric video for the album track "Icarus And I." Check it out in the player below. Commented guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist Tom Philips:
"‘Icarus And I’ is Part 2 out of 11 and establishes the foundation of »Suspended At Aphelion’s« plot: the pursuit of the sun with passion and vigor, only to succumb to the reality that it is beyond reach.
"That is really what 'Suspended At Aphelion' is all about: being instead condemned to the furthest point from the sun...the failure to achieve the dream - despite all the faith, hope, spirit, strength, and heart any one of us could muster.
"And musically, there are so many more twists, turns, modulations, so much more madness that follows this, it's impossible to represent the totality of this song with any individual part, however ‘Icarus And I’was the inception of what we feel is the most gratifying journey in the history of While Heaven Wept."
The album includes several esteemed guests, including Fates Warning alumni drummer Mark Zonder and co-founding guitarist Victor Arduini. The track listing is as follows: More...

Engraved Disillusion Reveals Album Release Date
South West U.K. metal juggernaut Engraved Disillusion today reveals the band's second album "Eternal Rest" (and follow-up to 2011's "Embers of Existence") will be released on October 31st, 2014.
The album was recorded at Thin Ice Studios with Karl Groom (Dragonforce, Threshold) during the Summer of 2014 and features 10 tracks of epic, diverse, and unrelenting metal. The addition of new vocalist Matthew William Mead and bassist Aaron Preston has allowed the band to diversify and bring new elements to the sound, namely the inclusion of clean vocals.
Guitarist Toby Stewart comments, “When we started writing the album we made sure to write exactly what we wanted to do even if it took us in some different directions to our other releases. We felt a bit tired of bands having to make the music people expect them to when they’re capable of a lot more. The initial word that we had in our heads when writing album was 'epic.' We wanted a huge melodic sound. We feel the songwriting has gone up another level and we've achieved exactly what we wanted to on this album.”
The artwork was created by Colin Marks at Rain Song Design (Strapping Young Lad, Saille, Exodus, Scar Symmetry…) and can be seen below. The track listing is as follows:
1. Life is...
2. Embrace The Flames

Obscure Burial Streaming "Night Queen"
The filthy Finns in Obscure Burial today premiere the new track "Night Queen" online, which hails from the band's second demo, "Epiphany." The demo is set for international release on September 15th via Invictus Productions on cassette tape, and the label comments:
"Hailing from the fertile Finnish black metal scene and featuring a couple native veterans, Obscure Burial are fittingly named: the quartet unloads an arsenal of ancient black/death magick, drawing influence from the fuck-off-forever sounds of Necrovore, Profanatica, Sadistic Intent, and early Possessed, piling on miles of filth and obscurity atop.
"As such, the title Epiphany is also fitting, as this four-song demo reveals a young band hungry for the olden ways and rabidly committed to putting their own personal spin on it. And song titles like 'Night Queen' and "Demonic Incantation" should say more than enough - revel in Obscure Burial's Epiphany!"
Experience that revelry for yourself below, thanks to No Clean Singing. The track listing is as follows:
1. Night Queen
2. Dweller In The Abyss

Bloodbath Comments On New Album
As was announced yesterday, Sweden's Bloodbath is set to release its fourth album of supreme death metal, "Grand Morbid Funeral," on November 18th through Peaceville Records.
Guitarist, Blakkheim, commented, "We're proud of all these different styled releases and we loved doing each and every one of them, but the objective was never to settle with a certain style, so our time has come to shift once more.
"It was already decided right after the last album that the next record would not become a 'Fathomless part 2,' but in certain aspects it would actually to become its antithesis! So prepare yourselves for an ultimate blueprint of destructive, raw, heavy, organic and sludgy death metal!
"The time has come to stomp those HM-2 pedals once more and close the circle of the death metal archives with our Grand Morbid Funeral!"
The first album since the departure of Opeth vocalist Mikael Åkerfeldt, this new Bloodbath album will feature an as-yet-unnamed new frontman. Metal Hammer magazine (U.K.) is set to reveal the replacement on Tuesday, September 16th.
"Grand Morbid Funeral" was recorded once again at Ghost Ward Studios and the City of Glass Studios in Stockholm, and mixed by David Castillo. The album features a number of guest appearances including Chris Reifert and Eric Cutler from Autopsy.
Bloodbath is set to appear on a string of festivals throughout 2015, including Inferno Festival (Norway), Neurotic Deathfest (The Netherlands) and Maryland Deathfest (U.S.) with more TBA. More...
