First Episode Of NOLA Metal Documentary Posted

Today Noisey, the music arm of Vice, is proud to present episode 1 of "NOLA: Life, Death And Heavy Blues From The Bayou."

A seven-part series examining the people and the culture that helped foster bands like Down, Eyehategod, Crowbar, and so many others, episode 1 features New Orleans native Phil Anselmo who exports his style to Dallas band Pantera, thereby changing the landscape for metal in the '90s.

Meanwhile, a visit from the Melvins to the New Orleans area would alter music as we know it, while Kirk Windstein of the band Shell Shock was discovering that slower was, for him, indeed heavier. More...

Wormwood Announces Self-Titled Debut

Magic Bullet Records will deliver a corrosive sludge/doom release this year with the somewhat unexpected self-titled debut and incurably bleak and sinister awakening of Boston's newest outfit, Wormwood. The label comments:

"In 2005, band members Chris Pupecki and Chris Bevilacqua represented one half of the progenitors of Black Thunder, the debut album from Northeast perennials, Doomriders. Pupecki played guitars and Bevilacqua handled drums.

"Nine years later, the duo have come back together to unleash a sound and a vision much, much farther out on the plains of annihilation than either had gone prior. Recorded 100% analog by Alex Garcia, you will simply not be hearing the sounds of Wormwood on Apple commercials, in romantic comedies, or overhead while walking through the mall. Song titles and lyrics like 'Hollow Black Eyes' and 'I'd Rather Die' obviously convey a very specific worldview and outlook.

"The sonic attack is harsh, the vocals are unapologetically negative, and it's all destructively perfect as the needle digs in across the vinyl expanse of this stunning debut. If albums from Winter, Warhorse, -16-, Old Man Gloom and Graves At Sea frequent your habitual deafening, Wormwood should be next in line. More...

Interview

Interview with Digestor Of Ghoul

When not defiling graves and taking the lives of their native Creepsylvania inhabitants as they sleep, Ghoul creates thrashing grindcore songs about the mayhem that occurs in their pathetic, pit-of-Eastern-Europe town. Whether it's battling marauding bikers, opposing Commandant Dobrunkum's dictoral decree against rock ‘n roll or just songs about grave robbing and consuming the succulent flesh of humans, Ghoul writes hilarious songs with catchy rifsf that skaters dig. These above-the-catacombs dramas play out on stage, too, in a Gwar-like-blood-spewing fashion.

The hooded miscreants once again arose from their tombs and took a barge to North America, Count Dracula-style, to join up with blackened thrash titans Skeletonwitch and NYBM force Black Anvil. In order to bring you the following interview, I had to lead the guitarist/vocalist Digestor into the closest thing to his catacombs, a rat-and-roach-infested alleyway. He felt more at home in that environment.

Giant Squid Releasing New Album

San Francisco progressive doom-rock scientists Giant Squid will release fifth LP "Minoans" on October 28th via Translation Loss Records.

The record was recorded and mixed with engineer Tim Green (Earthless, Melvins) at Louder Studios in Grass Valley, CA and lyrically excavates one of the earliest civilizations known to history; examining how the aquatic demise of the ancient proto-Greek people may foretell our own end.

"Minoans" is the follow-up to Giant Squid's 2011 release "Cenotes' and features conceptual artwork created by guitarist / vocalist Aaron John Gregory.

"'Minoans' is the record I've always known Giant Squid could make; ancient, exotic and other-worldly, while showing a new level of refined focus," comments Gregory. "Lyrically, the album is a giant love letter to the Mediterranean and specifically Bronze-age Greece - a region, people, and time period that deeply fascinates me - and which I feel mirrors these heartbreakingly brutal, turbulent times we live in today." Anthrax Posts New "Chile On Hell" Trailer

Grammy-nominated thrash act Anthrax is releasing "Chile On Hell," a live-in-concert DVD, this month via Nuclear Blast.

Filmed at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile in 2013, the DVD features Anthrax performing an extended set that featured songs from the band's entire catalog. A short video clip of drummer Charlie Benante talking about the release can be seen below.

"Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this," said Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. “When we'd played there in the past, we'd finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room. But every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn't stop. One time Scott [Ian, guitar] and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn't we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?”

"Plus," Benante continued, "the time was right to do this DVD… We wanted to finish on a high note. We didn't want to look back and regret that we didn't record the live show."

Dystopia Proclaims "Human=Garbage"

With the re-issue of "Human=Garbage" from sludge metal/crust punk missionaries Dystopia just a few weeks away, today Cvlt Nation offers up the record in its filth-ridden entirety (check it out below).

Initially released in 1994 as a five-track LP on the band's own Life Is Abuse and Misanthropic Records, then followed in CD format as a twelve-track brutalizer with help from Common Cause in Germany, Dystopia existed as a four piece with Mindrot's Dan Kaufman on lead vocals.

This is a new chance for the current generation to catch the band's doom-laden, metal-tinged, down-tuned punk and "love earth-hate people" credo.

Included on the Tankcrimes edition are tracks from the band's 1993 splits with Grief and Embittered as well as one additional tune only previously released on the CD collection. Set for official unveiling on October 14th, 2014, the Tankcrimes reissue comes packaged as a double LP on clear vinyl with a 7" x 7" sized booklet as well as a download card for the digitally astute. The release will come available on CD as well. More...

Ragnarok Announces New Vocalist

It has been several months since Norwegian black metal band Ragnarok announced the departure of vocalist Hans Fyrste, and since then there has been much speculation as to who will replace him.

Until now the band has kept quiet about the replacement choice, whilst at the same time rehearsing the new lineup behind closed doors. The new vocalist will be drummer and Ragnarok founder Jontho himself, and his place behind the drum kit on stage will be taken by Dauden drummer Malignant.

Jontho comments: "When Hans Fyrste left I sat down together with bass player DezeptiCunt and guitarist Bolverk, and we knew that finding the right person who would fit Ragnarok's ethos both in terms of performance and live appearances was not going to be easy.

"On top of which we had to begin work on our eighth full-length album, and we didn't want to have to rush into anything we might later come to regret, so we took the decision that I would continue to handle the drums in the studio, as well as taking on the vocals both in the studio and on stage, and that Malignant would drum for us live on stage. Haken Releases "Darkest Light" Music Video

U.K. progressive metal act Haken released a music video for the re-worked track "Darkest Light." The song appears on the upcoming new EP release "Restoration," which will be released in the U.S. on November 11th via Inside Out Music as a digital release only.

The band had this to say: "'Darkest Light' was our first chance to work creatively with our new bass player Conner Green. It was a natural fit right from the start as not only did he bring with him some insanely cool bass playing, but also a great positive energy that made the whole Restoration EP incredibly fun to make."

Ray adds: ''Darkest Light' is based on 'Blind', one of our favourite tracks from the original 07/08 demo. We've managed to chop the old song in half, cut away all the excess fat and produce a 6 minute rowdy riff roller-coaster that will surely find a home in the heavier side of our live show."

"Restoration" is comprised of three reworked and updated songs which originally appeared on their 2007/08 self-produced demo, and the release has been mixed & mastered by Jens Bogren at Fascination Street Studios. It will be released as a digital download, and a vinyl LP including CD.

The track listing for the EP is:

1. Darkest Light (6:44)
2. Earthlings (7:52)
3. Crystallised (19:23)

Roberto Tiranti Splits With Labÿrinth

Italian progressive/power metal act Labÿrinth announced that vocalist Roberto Tiranti has split with the band, following another split with his other band A Perfect Day a couple of months ago, in an effort to pursue a solo career. The band has not made an official statement about the split, nor has a replacement been announced.

The statement from Tiranti reads:

"It is never easy to write this kind of public statements, but I think it's fair to be clear and sincere towards those that for many years have granted us esteem and love.

"From now on I am no longer the singer of Labyrinth, after almost 18 years I leave the band that more than any other has given me in terms of satisfaction, blazon and experience in Italy but even more abroad.

"6 albums, an EP and a 'Best Of,' a lot of music written all together with a common goal, so much life shared that cannot be wiped out and the awareness of having friends I can count on and hopefully meet again in the future to write other music together.

"Everyone is useful, no one is indispensable and I think that also this time the band will be able to face this with the usual strength and ability to reinvent itself. I've had the best band I could have had to express myself in that field and I'm sure I won't ever be part of any other band of similar type, it would be stupid, incoherent and unfair to Labyrinth. At the moment I'm working on my first solo album on which I am spending a lot of energies, moreover the collaborations with Ken Hensley, Wonderworld and Mangala Vallis keep going on. My priorities obviously go to my solo project, in order to create a firm-based foundation for the future.

"THANKS TO LABYRINTH, THANKS TO YOU ALL." More...

Interview

ProgPower USA XV Interviews: EVERGREY

Not altogether unexpected, given Evergrey’s close relationship with ProgPower USA promoter Glenn Harveston, it was still a nice surprise to most to see drummer Jonas Ekdahl and mainman Tom Englund announce a listening party for the new album, “Hymns For The Broken,” at ProgPower USA this year. Their video for “King of Errors” got the world chattering when it revealed that Ekdahl and previous guitarist Henrik Danhage were officially back in the band after a few years’ time. The listening party at the festival revealed that the support for Evergrey never waned among their core USA fans, with the crowd giving applause after every single song that played.

During their time at the festival, the Evergrey men made time to have a nice long chat in person with MetalUnderground.com’s Frank Serafine, during which it was revealed that much of the new album was inspired by mainman Tom Englund’s descent into depression and self-doubt, as well as overcoming it to get to where he is today. In good spirits, the guys joked throughout the interview. Englund even almost got teary-eyed when describing several touching emails he received from Evergrey fans. Moreover, it was revealed that Evergrey would like to eventually release an acoustic album, which would be an excellent choice given their flirtation with acoustic songs on past records. More...
