Roundtrip To Hel, Part III
[Continued from Part II]
SUNDAY, 6/29 - 13:00
“We have less than thirty minutes to catch the bus.”
THAT gets me moving. Did I mention I’ve developed Midnight Sun Syndrome since arriving in Finland? According to the current DSM edition, its chief symptom is “a complete ignorance and lack of regard for the time of day and nonchalant indifference toward tardiness; see also ‘The Casual Southerner.’”
I enter the bathroom. Nera, a shy, tiny black cat, scampers between my legs and out the door. I almost trip and plant a bare foot smack in the litter box. I’m still waking up.
As the mornings have ticked by - it’s still “morning” to us this weekend - it’s gotten more and more difficult to grease the joints, clear the skull, and get going. Tuska is not a camping festival, so I’ll be damned if I’m going to forsake the comforts of home at my disposal. A shit, shower, and shave is as good as a full-immersion baptism after a night of drinking.
My ill-advised windmilling at Omnium Gatherum last night really did a twisting number on my hair, which is in danger of Chris Barnesing. Lacking a brush, I clumsily yank apart the knotted strands and clumps cemented together with dried sweat.
And then, Rachel’s muffled yell over the running shower, through the closed door: “You ready?” Not even close. More...
Megadeth Drops Off Motorboat Cruise
Motörhead’s Motörboat regrets to announce that Megadeth has been forced to withdraw from the September 22nd - 26th cruise due to medical reasons. Heavy metal all-star band Metal Allegiance – including Megadeth’s David Ellefson and Chris Broderick – has now been added to the Motörhead’s Motörboat music lineup.
Metal Allegiance promises Motörboaters the rare opportunity to see a diverse group of metal legends interacting and performing together on the same stage. Singers Philip Anselmo (Down, ex-Pantera), Joey Belladonna (Anthrax), and Chuck Billy (Testament), guitarists Chris Broderick (Megadeth), Jon Donais (Anthrax, Shadows Fall), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Mark Zavon (Kill Devil Hill), bassists Frank Bello (Anthrax), Rex Brown (Kill Devil Hill, ex-Pantera) and David Ellefson (Megadeth), and drummers Charlie Benante (Anthrax) and Mike Portnoy (The Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater) will put their spin on a scorching set of heavy metal’s most influential and recognizable songs.
Megadeth issued the following statement about the unfortunate cancellation: “Due to complications arising from a previous cervical spine surgery, and upon his doctor’s strict recommendations, Dave Mustaine has cancelled all performances for the next 8 weeks. With rest and treatment, he is expected to recover and resume performing soon. The band was looking forward to the concerts and cruise, and is disappointed that they will not be able to see their fans. Megadeth expects to return to the road and will see their fans soon!”
“You can’t replace a band like Megadeth, who have done so much to change the landscape of heavy music over the past 30 years. We wish Dave Mustaine all the best in his recovery,” says event producer Alan Koenig of ASK4 Entertainment. “But we’re excited that Megadeth’s David Ellefson and Chris Broderick will still be joining us. The whole reason to do these music cruises is to give fans an experience that they can’t get anywhere else – and bringing Metal Allegiance onboard with metal’s most loyal fans fits that bill.” More...

Monster Magnet Announces "Milking The Stars"
2013 saw the release of Monster Magnet's latest album "Last Patrol," and now comes "Milking the Stars," a re-imagining of "Last Patrol" due out November 18th via Napalm Records.
Today the artwork, track listing, and first song from "Milking the Stars" have been released. Vocalist Dave Wyndorf's pick for the first song he wanted fans to be exposed to is "No Paradise For Me." The song according to Wyndorf is "interesting, fucked up and old school sounding." Check it out below.
Wyndorf also comments on this new version of the album: "Milking the Stars is a 're-imagined' version of Last Patrol featuring four new songs and live tracks. This was a happy experiment for me. It's not a re-mix record by the current definition. It's more like Last Patrol in a "what if?" style alternate reality.
"What if these songs were recorded in 1968? What would happen if I turned a pretty song into an angry one? How would adding creepy organs and Mellotrons affect the emotional vibe of a song? These are just a few of the questions that roll around in my head when I write and record any album but this time I decided to actually answer them with fully fleshed out, recorded and mixed examples.
"The process actually created new songs. That's the icing on the cake for me. New sounds, new vocals, different instruments and arrangements make for a weird 1960's vibe totally apart from Last Patrol which was fun for Phil, Bob, Garrett, mixer Joe Barresi and myself to explore. More...
Encoffination To Release New Album
With three solid years of putrid silence having passed since American death/doom metal duo Encoffination did its best to suffocate the masses with a full-length album, the even deadlier follow-up album is being prepared for exhibit.
This Autumn, Selfmadegod Records will present the horrid "III - Hear Me, O' Death (Sing Thou Wretched Choirs)," an album that takes Encoffination's star-encrusted tones, slow-motion seismic rhythms and soulless, guttural conjuring to more claustrophobic levels.
Constructed over a full year, the album was recorded in various sessions throughout 2013, the drums recorded at Universal Sound in San Diego, California, and the rest at Graf Yairden in Atlanta. Funeral vocal choirs, organs, and other elements influence the flow of the album.
"III - Hear Me, O' Death (Sing Thou Wretched Choirs)" will be relased on CD and via digital delivery in North America on October 21st, and a month later on 2xLP. The track listing is as follows:
1. Processional - Opvs Thanatologia

SpiralArms Posts "Exit 63" Video
Bay Area outfit SpiralArms recently completed work on the third video from 2013 album "Freedom." The new clip for the song "Exit 63" can be seen below. Guitarist Tim Narducci comments on the new video and the band's future plans:
"Here is our third video from the Freedom album, 'Exit 63.' It takes a step back in time and taps into moments of history that ended the free love movement. It's a heavy visual reminder that history usually repeats its self and parades the dark side of humanity. A very heavy ride!
"We've been gearing up for the studio over the summer writing what will be the next SpiralArms release. We have 7 songs so far and tons of riffs/ideas that will wrap up the song writing this month. These songs are a nice growth from Freedom...a little heavier even...and we're really excited about them! Our plan is to be in the studio tracking in October with a release for early 2015. Stay tuned and we'll keep the updates coming!" More...
Old Lines Streaming "The Hunt(ed)"
Baltimore based hardcore band Old Lines has debuted a new track called “The Hunt(ed)” today via BrooklynVegan.com (also available below).
The track is featured on the band’s upcoming record, "No Child Left Behind," which is due out on October 14th via No Sleep Records. Fans can pre-order the record now at this location.
“The Hunt(ed) is a gut reaction to the sadness and rage of wolf hunting,” says vocalist Matt Taylor. “Not only have we demonized these animals, creating fear and promoting misinformation, but we have also transformed their systematic slaughter into a tragic display of human imperialism. Our collective desire to 'conquer' nature, and infantile need to prove our superiority has only served to separate us from the natural world, and will become one more nail in our coffins when the tables turn. All living things in our world deserve a chance to live freely, and we will never find peace of any sort until we realize that." More...

Rabbits Posts "So Fake It's Real" Video
Following the recent Lamb Unlimited release of the third Rabbits LP "Untoward," the horde now infects the media with an official video for the track "So Fake It's Real."
Following in the same "digital can suck it" ethos of the LP -- recorded live to tape, only overdubbing vocals and solos -- the "So Fake It's Real" video was constructed by Whitey McConnaughy (Red Fang, OFF!, ZZ Top), who took DIY to new levels of dementia to create one of the most caustic handmade videos to be found.
"I've wanted to do a video like this for some time and was looking for the right band/song and Rabbits fit the bill all the way around. I had gotten bored with the clean perfect look of all the HD videos out there and wanted to shoot something that had a lot of texture, grit and personality to it and HD has none of that," McConnaughy states in a sequential breakdown of the "So Fake It's Real" creation process.
The video utilizies fully analog equipment and unorthodox manufacturing methods, infusing chemicals, lasers, skateboards, stomping techniques, pillow cases, coffee filters, a Fisher Price Pixel Vision camera and more to visually capture Rabbits in the filthiest possible state. He continues, "There is absolutely no digital effects used in the making of the video. Everything is analog, with equipment made well before 1985. The only thing modern was the editing system that I used but it was just simple cuts, I didn't do any real color correction because it is what it is. It's not perfect, it's jagged, it's rough, it's messy; it's how life really is and that's why I like it."

Father/Son Grindcore Squad Posts Track Online
Think back - what did you do with your father when you were a teenager? Perhaps you went on fishing trips, learned how to change the oil in your first car, or even enjoyed a ballgame together from time to time?
Such is not the case for impressive 17-year-old drummer Leo “Lurkrot” Didkovsky, who proposed the idea of forming a blackened-grindcore band with his guitarist/composer father, Nick “Vürdoth” Didkovsky in 2013. With the later addition of fellow 18-year-old family friend and vocalist Malcolm “Skrag the Screecher” Hoyt, this connection birthed the ultra-high energy project Vomit Fist, hailing from the depths of New York City.
The trio’s recently released debut digital EP, "Forgive But Avenge," will be made available in hard copy CD format via independent release on October 28th, 2014. Take a listen to the track "Under The Rind" below, courtesy of Revolvermag.com. The EP was recorded and engineered by Nik Chinboukas at Spin Studios (studio credits include Lamb of God, Testament and Gojira).
Vomit Fist father figure Nick “Vürdoth” Didkovsky recalls his heavy metal connections harking back to Leo’s childhood: “My son Leo and I have shared a love for metal from the time he was very young. I recall him taking Judas Priest 'Painkiller' to school for show-and-tell when he was in kindergarten. Deep roots! We played a bunch of one-offs together while he was in grade school, cover tunes mostly, like ‘School’s Out’ for the fifth grade graduation ceremony, and later some Lamb of God, Black Sabbath, Kiss, etc. His drumming developed into something pretty sick through his experience at Tomato’s House of Rock. So one day, when the idea came about that he and I put a band together, I was really into it, not just because he’s my son, but because he’s such a killer musician."
The EP's track listing is as follows:
1. Forgive but Avenge
2. Under the Rind
3. Eat The Hand That Feeds You
4. Enter My Guts
5. Frogmen
6. Ass Hammer
7. Story
8. A Public Execution
9. In Your Skin / Born

In collaboration with Metal Hammer Germany, AntropomorphiA is now streaming another track from the album. Listen to "Carved to Pieces" below.

AntropomorphiA also comments on the album: "With 'Rites ov Perversion' we created a more organic layered and violent album, we explored within the realm of our musical origin and its atmospheric grimness, but at the same time not limiting ourselves to the sinister beauty of other dimensions. There are songs that have a bleak mid-paced drive and songs that just have primitive skull penetrating riffs…its the definition of this band, where we stand and what we are in this point of time…behold the sway of death!"

Scott Ian Talks Live DVDs
Get ready to mosh in the privacy of your own home, because Anthrax will release the live concert DVD "Chile On Hell" on October 17th (Europe). "Chile On Hell" was filmed at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on May 10th, 2013 and features Anthraxperforming an extended set that featured songs from the band's entire catalog.
Nuclear Blast decided to quiz Scott Ian about the release at this year's Sonisphere Festival, as well as aski him what some of his favoritelive DVDs are. Check out that interview below.
"Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this," says Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. "When we'd played there in the past, we'd finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room. But every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn't stop. One time Scott [Ian, guitar] and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn't we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?"
"Plus," Benante continued, "the time was right to do this DVD… We wanted to finish on a high note. We didn't want to look back and regret that we didn't record the live show." More...

Amorphis Announces 20th Anniversary Shows
Finnish metal institution Amorphis will hit the road in late December in celebration of the 20th anniversary of 1994 release "Tales From The Thousand Lakes." Guitarist Esa Holopainen comments:
"This month (July 12) marked the 20th anniversary of the release of the by far most significant album of our career: 'Tales From The Thousand Lakes.'
"The years have flown by, and it feels great to notice that the tooth of time has not diminished the value of the album, nor the popularity of its songs when performed live. ‘Black Winter Day,’ ‘The Castaway,’ ‘Into Hiding,’ and ‘In The Beginning’ are still part of almost every Amorphis gig.
"Although we have played these songs hundreds of times, it is still as exciting as ever to see the joy in people’s faces and the sheer emotion evoked by, for example, the piano intro of Black Winter Day. When Tomi Joutsen joined the band, we reviewed the setlist in a new (old) light. It was perfectly clear that we would include more tracks from 'Tales From The Thousand Lakes' – without forgetting our debut 'The Karelian Isthmus,' of course.
"At that point we understood how much 'Tales From The Thousand Lakes' meant to people. Most of us have feelings about the 1990s that are brought back to mind by the songs from 'Tales From The Thousand Lakes,' so we are certainly talking about nostalgia here. To honor the two-decade history of the album, we will embark on the Tales From The Thousand Lakes 20th Anniversary Tour. More...

Kaine Signs Deal With Static Tension
After posting a lengthy discussion on why the band had previously turned down label offers, British heavy metal group Kaine just signed a special record agreement with newly founded Static Tension Recordings.
The record deal gives Static Tension exclusive rights to market and sell Kaine’s album "The Waystone" in the United States over the next two years. Kaine is excited to be working with Static Tension on the upcoming U.S. release, which is scheduled for October 14th, 2014.
The band’s guitarist/vocalist, Rage Sadler, comments: “I am very pleased we have come to an agreement with Static Tension. This is the perfect deal for us as this gives them exclusive rights to sell and market the band in America while we receive a fair share of the income from record sales. The deal also enables us to continue selling our own CDs and allows us to retain all of our own digital and merch income. The majority of European labels are only interested in ripping bands off and we really couldn’t do this sort of deal with the labels that approached us. This definitely isn’t the case with Static Tension who are firmly in the 21st Century and moving with the times as we are.”
Kyle Stevens of Static Tension stated: “I am extremely pleased to have Kaine as my first signing to Static Tension Recordings. They’re continued hard work, business savvy, and most importantly, their song writing skills are a breath of fresh air in today’s stagnant talent pool. Proving that traditional heavy metal is alive and well will make the forefathers from the New Wave of Heavy Metal proud.”
