The pit is where the action is at, but it can also be a dangerous place with all the banging heads and flailing body parts.
Every week we check in with musicians from around the globe to get their most memorable Pit Stories. Today Martin Van Drunen (Hail of Bullets, Grand Supreme Blood Court) shares this story of a short stage resulting in fan and band coming just a bit too close together at an Asphyx show:
In April 2009, I played with Asphyx in Barcelona in a place called Espasi Jove, together with Graveyard and Looking For An Answer. Two great but unfortunately not very well known bands from Spain. It was one of these shows organized by fans, not professional promoters, so it was a bit pleasantly chaotic, as these shows usually are. The place itself looked like a school building, and the stage was about one-foot high, so it wasn’t really something you could call a stage. But we don't care about minor things like that-- the place was packed and the atmosphere was just great. Both Graveyard and Looking For An Answer did fat performances, which we watched from the crowd, having a good time and drinking, as always. A lot of beers with the metalheads.
So then it was our turn. Normally when we headline smaller shows, we can play up to two hours sometimes, depends if there's a curfew. So this would be a long one as well. I think it was somewhere halfway into the set (we still had to do songs like “The Rack” and “Last One” along with some other Asphyx-oldies) when there was a big guy standing at the front of the stage banging his head off. But he was really tall, perhaps like me, maybe even bigger. So at one point, he was banging his head, but he was standing slightly bent over. And we always bang our heads off too during our set, so when I put my head down, all of a sudden he threw his head back, but also stood up straight. So he hit my forehead fuckin’ hard with the back of his thick Spanish skull. And for an instant, I was blind, couldn't see shit. Then I felt the spot where he hit me, and there was this egg growing rapidly.
The band guys asked if I was ok of course. I asked Xavi from Graveyard (whom I saw standing in the crowd) to please get me some ice, and he started running to the bar and came back with a plastic cup with a big piece of ice in it. Ah, I remember that relief when I put that against my aching and palpitating forehead. But, as we say in the band, we always man ourselves (it's a Dutch expression, not sure how to translate that), and it was our first show in Spain ever. We didn't wanna disappoint the Spanish fans. So I continued the show, with the ice against my head, taking it slightly more easy than normal haha. And the crowd really appreciated it and were grateful that we kept playing on.
Later on, I met the guy and he apologized. I told him, “Hey, not your fault, you had a good time banging to us and you didn't do it on purpose, those things can always happen during a death metal show.”
I think I had a brain concussion, as I still had a satanic headache for days after that performance. But I recovered soon after that, and now it's just a nice anecdote or memory. And let's be honest, boys and girls: death metal just ain't for sissies…

BrooklynVegan today premieres "Perfection," a track off Nervous' self-titled debut album, due out September 24th on Twelve Gauge Records. Give the song a listen below.
From Oakland, California, the band features frontman Jake Spek, also of Lewd Acts, and pounds out infectious anthems of anxiety and depression, described by BrooklynVegan as "brash, sarcastic, angry noise punk that should appeal to fans of late-period Black Flag, Flipper, The Jesus Lizard, or a newer band like Pissed Jeans."
Nervous' debut was recorded by Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Loma Prieta) and mastered by Alan Douches (Converge, Japandroids). The previously posted "Cog In The Machine" and "Good Morning" tracks can also be heard at this location. More...
August Burn Red's Brent Rambler has issued the following announcement about sitting out the band's upcoming tour dates:
"As some of you may know, my wife and I are expecting our first baby VERY soon. Because of this I have decided to sit out this European tour, so I can be home to help my wife during the last few weeks of her pregnancy and ensure that I'm present when my son is born.
"HOWEVER, do not worry, as my guitar playing duties have been left in the very capable and very shreddy hands of Mr. Justin Huffman (ex-I, The Breather). Justin has been friends with the band for a very long time, and he's been practicing these songs since April, so everything will sound awesome for our amazing fans overseas. Heck, he even kind of looks like me.
"I will make my triumphant return to the band for our North American Headlining tour, which starts November 1st at the Union Transfer in Philadelphia, but in the mean time please show Justin an awesome time!
"My wife and I can't wait to welcome our baby into this world, and I hope that all of our European fans have a blast over the next 3 weeks! I wish I could be there, and I'll see you next time!" More...

Produced by Eyal Levi at Audiohammer Studios, this is the band's follow-up to last year's "The Fantasy Effect." Foster continues, "we aren't writing music as a gimmick. Ohio's Wolves At The Gate is pleased to announce "Back To School," a digital EP of covers set to drop September 30th.
The EP sees WATG paying homage and "schooling" a new generation on bands such as Thrice, Thursday, Blindside, and The Received End Of Sirens.
"We're really excited about this EP because we hope to give fans an inside look at the types of music and bands that inspired our own creativity with Wolves At The Gate," explains guitarist/vocalist Steve Cobucci. "The lyrical content of each song has real depth and meaning to us as well. Recording these songs was so much fun because I've been playing and singing these songs for about a decade."
The track listing is:
1. Deadbolt (originally by Thrice)
2. Understanding In A Car Crash (originally by Thursday)
3. Sleepwalking (originally by Blindside)
4. Planning a Prison Break (originally by The Receiving End of Sirens)
East Bay act SpiralArms is set to release second album "Freedom" on October 8th in North America via Steamhammer / SPV.
Today MetalSucks is hosting astream of the song "Drugs & Alcohol." Check it out below.
SpiralArms rose from the ashes of millennial bands Systematic, Forbidden, and Man Made God. "We always work at the studio as a full band," says guitarist Craig Locicero. "The basic tracks of the new album were recorded in just about 16 hours, the rest was recorded by and by, but always in the same spirit. From the beginning, we never lost sight of our vision and that special flair which our new songs have."
The band also comments: "We hope to be able to come to Europe next spring at the latest. We haven't forgotten the positive reactions to our show at the 2007 Graspop, where we were the only band without a record deal. That's why we can hardly wait to play in Europe again." More...
Flotsam and Jetsam has posted the following message online about canceling upcoming European tour dates:
"Jeff Keller Management LLC, the management company for Flotsam & Jetsam and Hirax, has announced that due to circumstances beyond the bands and management’s control, the 'Metal Apocalypse' European tour that was scheduled to feature both artists will now be cancelled."
Jeff Keller states: "Unfortunately, it was in both bands best interest to not continue with the tour at this time. We apologize to the fans for this unfortunate circumstance, and I can assure the fans that both bands will be in Europe in 2014 for other touring and festival appearances."
The second album from Finland's Purtenance is finished and will be released through Xtreem Music on October 1st, with a vinyl version to follow later this year.
After 2012's comeback EP "Sacrifice the King," the band added second guitarist Ville Nokelainen and entered the studio in spring 2013 to record this new album entitled "Awaken From Slumber." Xtreem Music comments:
"For those who expect a 'Member…II,' they won't find it here. That album was done over 20 years ago with a different line up. The 'Awaken From Slumber' album shows the heaviest and darkest side of the band. This is how Purtenance sounds 2013! A fucking crushing, heavy and gloomy Death Metal with inhuman brutal vocals. Those who weren't satisfied with their previous EP should give it a listen to this new album cos they'll be gladly surprised!"
The track listing is as follows:
3. What Was Hidden
4. Toxic Death
5. Field of Terror
6. Vaikka Paahtuisin Tulessa
7. End for the Parasites (Called Humankind)
8. Hour of the Cannibal
9. Temptation of Suicide

Eclipse Records is thrilled to announce the signing of Our Last Enemy from Sydney, Australia, which features former Genitorturers and The Undead member Bryce “Bizz” Bernius on guitar.
Our Last Enemy caught the eye of Eclipse when releasing an EP last year, and it climbed to the number two position on the Australian iTunes metal chart, second only to Meshuggah, released on the same day.
“When I first heard Our Last Enemy, they immediately commanded my attention,” states label president Chris Poland. “Their sound is just so damn heavy - like a ton of lead being balanced on your head!”
“Of all the labels we had been speaking with, Chris and the team at Eclipse seemed to really understand what the band is trying to do and how to take us there,” says vocalist Oliver Fogwell. Bassist Matt Heywood continues, “signing with Eclipse makes us extremely happy because they’ve been responsible for launching some of our favorite bands. It’s a very exciting time for us." More...

Doomseekers everywhere, listen up, for a stream is now available of "The Ravens" from Obelyskkh. Check out the track at Pitchfork.com here. The following press release was also issued:
"The band's organic, sonic tsunami continually morphs into something new and more memorable with each release, and building on what they've cultivated on their heralded Mount Nysa debut and last year's follow-up White Lightnin', Obelyskkh have truly shown what they are fully capable of on their pending third LP, Hymn To Pan.
"A perfect example of Obelyskkh's seamless marriage of peaceful transcendentalism with brilliantly crushing audibility is possibly best captured in the epic eight and-a-half minute anthem, Hymn To Pan's lumbering second cut, 'The Ravens,' playing now at Pitchfork. More...
Finnish atmospheric death/doom band Fractured Spine has released a new lyric video for "In The Shade," which can be viewed below. Inverse Records also comments:
"Although the band has composed since the 90's, the oldest song on the debut album 'Songs of Slumber' dates back to 2004. The band consists of two core-members Antti & Timo and to many people's surprise, draws its main influences from outside the metal genre, based on the British atmospheric/progressive rock and shoegazing.
"Starting with instrumentals, ballads and gothic metal songs, the earlier material utilized no unclean vocals. However, almost no songs were ever released to the public until 2011 (except for the very limited edition demo 'Frost' in 2008). These days the style has slowly taken a heavier tone with baritone guitars and growling vocals.
"Fractured Spine has a very 'indie style' approach to making music. All of the songs are recorded and mixed at the band's own Studio Fracture, with only mastering, publishing and distribution given to professionals outside the band. Thus, making sure the music sounds exactly like the band intended it to."
"Songs Of Slumber" was released June 14th, 2013 by Inverse Records. More...

On the thirteen-year anniversary of Impaled's "The Dead Shall Dead Remain" debut, the group will be releasing a re-recording entitled "The Dead Still Dead Remain."
Long tangled in legal limbo, the music from "The Dead Shall Dead Remain" has been unavailable on CD for over a decade. The re-recording dodges those legal hurdles and puts the music back in print.
"The Dead Still Dead Remain" features recording and mixing by Vinnie Wojno, famous for his work with Testament. Impaled and Wojno worked for three years to get the recording they wanted. "It simply sounds better, no matter how you slice it. And we surely do slice it!" says guitarist Jason Kocol.
Impaled assures fans that the music is faithful to the original. It features the return of vocalist Leon del Muerte, who says, "it was like the last thirteen years of backstabbing and spitefulness never happened!"
AC Angry has checked in with the following announcement about releasing a new album:
"On October 25th, we will release our debut album 'Black Denim' worldwide through the German record label Dust on the Tracks Records. The album was produced by Phil Hillen (Powerwolf, Parachutes, The Vision Bleak, Vendetta) at SU2 - Studio. Iconic illustrator Jan Meininghaus (U.D.O., Bolt Thrower, Brainstorm) is responsible for the perfectly fitting artwork. For more artworks from Jan Meininghaus visit this location.
"AC Angry is demonstrating with a total of ten songs how a dirty Rock ’n’ Roll album is supposed to sound! Catchy tunes like the pounding opener 'Booze Horse,' the intriguing half-ballad 'It‘s Good To Be Bad' or the fat speed metal riffs-driven 'Rock ’n’ Roller Roller Rolla!' are evidence that singer and guitarist Alan Costa, his congenial lead guitarist Stefan Kuhn, as well as the tight rhythm section, consisting of bassist Dennis Kirsch and drummer Sascha Waack will truly stir up the international scene! Moreover we pay tribute to the Backyard Babies with the track 'Rocker.'" More...
