Every Tuesday we check in with musicians from across the metalverse to find their best Pit Stories from live shows.
While moshing is meant to be a chance to let out aggression while throwing down to your favorite band's music, some metalheads aren't exactly courteous in the pit and tempers are known to flare. Throw in someone who doesn't care about basic hygiene or personal boundaries and you've got a recipe for thrown fists and ejection from the venue.
One such unfortunate incident is chronicled today by drummer Avery Desmarais from Edmonton, Alberta-based metal band Display Of Decay. He had this story to share:
So Disciples of Power is playing their first ever reunion show at the pawnshop in Edmonton, I'm in the audience watching, enjoying the show and some giant asshole keeps elbowing and just laying out the people around him. People who aren't involved in the rowdy violent part of the crowd, people who don't look like they enjoy moshing. And he just keeps laying these people out, boom!
I'm unfortunately now beside him at this point, still watching when he turns, and shoves me pretty good. Managed to stand still, goes for it again and hits me. At this point a guy taps me on the shoulder to get my attention (I do not know this cat), he kinda nudges my hand insisting I smash this guys head in with this empty beer bottle that he is handing me. I think back on it now, I should have. but I'm like nahhh, don't need that kind of drama happening at a venue that I really like going to.
So this asshole, turns to me, and rubs the sweat from his forehead on my shoulder like a cat. Disgusted, I look at him and tell him to "Fuck off." Maybe 15 seconds passed, and I see him going for it again. At this point I'm thinking, okay I really want this guys to be bleeding from his ear right now, so I grabbed this fellow (who keep in mind, definitely has some weight on me, and a few inches, plus he was taller than me) by the shoulders of his jacket and I start whipping him around like hockey players on the ice grabbing the other by the jersey and just giving him all the weight I had.
This guy gets to his feet, swings at me, misses, I throw a punch and I'm pretty sure I hit him in the eyebrow. He swings again and clocks me, but being the spaz that I am along with the help of the pounding doom screaming from the amps of DOP during crisis, it barely phased me. Now we both were grabbed by people and I was taken outside and I went home.
I never saw that guy again. I wonder if he still thinks of me, I wonder if he remembers how we met. Only time will tell.
What's your best pit story of when an inconsiderate mosher practically begged for a beat down? Let us know in the comments below!
"Whenever we play with any Bay Area band, we always put a little bit extra,” admits guitarist Lee Altus of Bay Area thrash outfit Exodus. “If you wanna really see Exodus at their best, it's always with another Bay Area band - like Death Angel. We have this friendly competition, too. They know - anytime you play with us, we're going after you! After that, we'll have drinks together... we'll laugh about it... but right now, we're going after you! Oh, now we're playing with Testament? I'm gonna DIE on that stage!!!"
In the second of five trailers hosted by Guitar World showcasing material from the bonus DVD entitled “Blood Upon The Goat,” Altus discusses writing the tracks “Honor Killings” and “Body Harvest” appearing on the band’s tenth studio album, "Blood In, Blood Out."
Check out this new trailer below. The album is due out in North America on October 14th and the bonus DVD is included in the album’s digi-pak and import box set versions. More...

With Orange Goblin's "Back From The Abyss" full-length now three weeks away from release, the band has confirmed the first North American tour in support of the record.
Set to begin December 1st and run through December 21st, Orange Goblin will return to the stage touring alongside Down, Bl'ast!, and labelmates King Parrot!
Vocalist Ben Ward comments, "I remember being a spotty 19 year old rushing out to the record store to buy the first Down album NOLA the very day it came out in 1994. Now, twenty years on, I have to pinch myself to make sure I'm not dreaming that Orange Goblin are heading back to North America as main support to the mighty Down.
"It really is fairytale stuff for us. Down are one of the bands that are the reason Orange Goblin exists. To be given this opportunity to go out to promote our brand new album, Back From The Abyss, to the Down fans is just a dream come true the rest of the band and I can't wait to get started. The fact that we also get to see Bl'ast and King Parrot every night just makes it all so hard to believe! Hail the Leaf! Hail the RIFF! Hail DOWN!"
Recorded earlier this year, "Back From The Abyss" reunites Orange Goblin with producer Jamie Dodd; who served as producer on the band's best selling album in North America to date - 2012's "A Eulogy For The Damned." More...

In anticipation for an upcoming 2015 EP release, the melodic metal quintet known as Within Our Gates has released a brand new song.
The first taste of new music since 2012's "Kingdom Of Mind" is entitled "Sleepers Wake" and is a small preview of what to expect from the band in 2015. Check out the track below.
"Sleepers Wake" was written to picture a devastating moment in the life of guitarist Hunter Carter. The song depicts the story of Hunter's closest friend being involved in a horrible car accident that rendered him in a long lasting coma.
The lyrics to the song come from the perspective of Hunter and what he wanted to say to his old friend as he lie comatose. After writing the lyrics for what would be the newest Within Our Gates single, Hunter's friend has since waken up and now is in recovery. More...
Los Angeles hardcore band The Ghost Inside will release fourth album "Dear Youth" on November 17th on Epitaph Records.
The album was co-produced by Jeremy McKinnon and Andrew Wade. Today you can also watch the band's new video for the track "Dear Youth (Day 52)," featuring fan-submitted footage. Front man Jonathan Vigil explains the album concept in a letter written to his younger self:
"I'm writing to you now because it seems I’ve lost my way. I can't pinpoint exactly when it started, but I know that it’s not like it was before. I’ve realized the more time that passes, the more we lose touch. It’s starting to feel like all I ever do now is lose touch with things. But not you, I never wanted to lose you.
"I wish I had something to blame it all on, but I don’t. One day I was there and the next I was here. As if I was dreaming and suddenly woken up. These days I'm always wondering if what I've done is enough. It’s getting harder and harder for me to shake this feeling of stagnance.
"So old friend I’m writing to ask you what it feels like to have the whole world in your hand? Where we could set out and do anything that we imagined. Endless possibilities way before complacence set in. To be honest with you, I’ve forgotten what that all feels like. There was a wonder about us that has long since faded. That sense of excitement, I miss it.
"Dear youth, will you show me again? I need to be reminded of those times, back before this began..."
After playing the main stage at the Vans Warped Tour all summer, The Ghost Inside will tour the U.S. in November and December for a co-headlining run with label mates Every Time I Die. Architects (UK), Hundredth, and Backtrack join as support.

Nanaimo, BC six-piece powerhouse The Body Politic is proud to unleash new EP "Egressor" - out officially today, Tuesday, September 16th.
The entire EP is now available for free download at Bandcamp here and can also be streamed below. The following press release was issued about The Body Politic:
"Taking the name from a Clive Barker short story and shifting gears from jazz (which most of the members studied at Vancouver Island University) to progressive metal, the bands combine poly-metric grooves, aggressive screams and soaring vocal melodies to push the boundaries of modern metal music with technically impressive musicianship.
"Their emotionally charged songs incorporate an element of playfulness that has lead The Body Politic to stand out in a vast metal crowd and to perform opening slots for Tesseract, Protest The Hero and Scale The Summit plus multiple Western Canadian tours with their evolution."
Drummer Spencer Bowman adds: "This is it. This is the culmination of two years worth of hard work and passion. Today is the day we unveil Egressor to the world, and we’ve never been more proud of anything. We couldn’t be more excited." More...
Today, Bleeding Light Records releases the debut album from Italy's Postvorta. You can stream the full release below, and the label also comments:
"While there are many bands that traverse and explore the same terrain as heavy titans Neurosis and Isis, very few of those bands embrace these influences and yet do not feel like imitators.
"Postvorta, the pulverizing sextet from Ravenna, Italy are ones who incorporate a similar style as their influences, but move themselves and the listener through stunning corridors of sound that feel fresh. Bringing elements of post-metal, hardcore and doom into a swirling vortex of monolithic and earth shaking heaviness.
"The band creates beauty, destroys and rebuilds it in stunning and imaginative ways time and time again throughout their 70 minute debut offering. As beautiful as it is ferocious, 'Beckoning Light We Will Set Ourselves on Fire' commands the listener with authority."
Initially self-released in May digitally, the band recently joined up with Bleeding Light Records for today's official CD issuing. More...
Now just two weeks from release is the second 7" from Philadelphia-based hyperthrash/grindcore trio Die Choking, simply entitled "II."
As the September 29th release date approaches, today Cvlt Nation has leaked a new track from the decimating EP. Check out "Tonsil" below.
With the vinyl version of the EP, the band is including a printed document which will serve as a legal, personal Living Will, to memorialize one's final wishes upon their time of death. Founding bassist/vocalist Paul J. Herzog coments:
"This song is a dedication to the memory of Jahi McMath who died on December 12th 2013. Despite the absolute, irreversible nature of brain death she (as far as I know) remains on 'life' support. The controversy of this is obvious but my interest is geared more towards the broader subject of CHOICE in regards to medical treatment during end of life scenarios. It is unfortunate, but families often contradict explicit wishes of dying loved ones. The severe and painful nature of pursuing a 'do everything you can' mentality is dire to say the least. This, to me, is pure tragedy. My goal is to open the dialogue a bit and introduce a tool to communicate the questions one needs to ask should they or a loved one be in a life threatening or life ending circumstance. Most people WILL end up THERE and not simply die in their sleep nor arrive to a facility DOA."

Massacre Records today announce the signing of Norway's extreme metal outfit Viper Solfa. Vocalist Ronny Thorsen comments about the signing:
"After spending over a year crafting this beast of an album, Viper Solfa is very pleased to announce our signing to Germany’s Massacre Records! Having worked intensely in both Sound Suite Studios in France and Strand Studio in Oslo, Norway, to obtain the results needed to present the material, it feels very comfortable to hand over the finished product to one of the longest-running metal labels around. We look forward to a fruitful collaboration with the enthusiastic people at Massacre!"
Massacre Records adds: "Viper Solfa is still a young band, formed in 2013, but consists of experienced musicians. The band emerged as an idea of ex-Trail Of Tears front man and Viper Solfa vocalist Ronny Thorsen, who was quickly joined by fellow TOT band members Endre Moe (bass) as well as Bjørn Dugstad Rønnow (drums) and guitarist/keyboardist Morfeus (Mayhem, Limbonic Art).
"With the material at hand, it soon became obvious that the band's sound needed a diverse and intense female voice. After numerous auditions with vocalists from all around the globe, Miriam 'Sphinx' Renvåg (Ram-Zet) completed the band's line-up.
"The vast musical backgrounds of everyone involved results in a merciless musical extreme metal beast, which the band fittingly labels as 'Poison Music.'"
Viper Solfa's debut album is entitled "Carving An Icon" and is expected to be released in the first half of 2015 via Massacre Records. More...

Stick To Your Guns has today revealed the title and release date for a fifth studio album: The band will release "Disobedient," produced by John Feldmann, on February 10th, 2015 via Sumerian Records.
"Growing up in a world where we are taught to submit, blindly follow and unquestioningly comply, this album is a critique and unlearning of these Stepford mindsets.” said frontman Jesse Barnett. "Where we should be glorifying doing what is right instead of what we're told, we are only failing each other. Not anymore. Forever Disobedient."
"Disobdient" is the follow up to the band’s 2012 release, "Diamond." Further details will be announced through Sumerian shortly. More...
Trollhättan, Sweden-based Gust this week releases a self-titled, sophomore LP via Southern Lord. You can stream the full album below. Southern Lord also comments:
"Self-recorded at Fvck Life Studios, and mastered by Brad Boatright (Warcry, From Ashes Rise, Deathreat) at Audiosiege, who also supplies guest vocals to the album, Gust is a crushing and incredibly dynamic album, displaying a unique style of crust-infused hardcore and talented songwriting from the young act.
"With ten tracks in just under a half-hour, the members of Gust unleash a maelstrom of cutting edge demolition, with cerebral elements continually emerging from the shadows with an almost ethereal effect. Fans of Cursed, Oathbreaker, Rise And Fall, and now-labelmates The Secret, Baptists and Dead In The Dirt will no doubt find something addictive in the band's harsh output.
"As the band continues to tour in support of the new album, Gust has another run of European gigs being solidified for early October, with more on the way. Stand by for further announcements in the coming weeks."

"With the recruitment of Ilmar as Necrowretch's new drummer, the band has managed to push their limits further than ever before, delivering their filthiest, most ruthless and most diverse material to date. Necrowretch has retained their bestial intensity while adding a touch of melody as well. Finnish band Callisto, perhaps best known for post-metal classic "Noir" (2006), has announced the band's fourth album shall be titled "Secret Youth."
The band is putting finishing touches to the mix with producer Jonas Olsson, who also worked on the group's previous albums. Due to delays with the process, the album will be released on January 30th, 2015 instead of November 2014, as originally planned.
Callisto's "Secret Youth" will be the band's first release with new label home, Svart Records. Guitarist Markus Myllykangas describes the forthcoming album as "a tighter and less progressive affair" than its predecessor, "Providence" (2009).
For the album covers, the band is working with renowned Finnish photographer Juha Metso, whose somber black-and-white photography the band feels suits the music perfectly. Svart Records will announce the album cover and tracklisting for "Secret Youth" shortly.

Swedish supergroup Bloodbath is set to release its fourth album of supreme death metal, "Grand Morbid Funeral," on November 18th through Peaceville Records.
Following the departure of Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt and months of speculation and rumor, Metal Hammer U.K. has broken the news that the new vocalist will be Paradise Lost's Nick Holmes.
Blakkheim (guitar) commented, "Little did I expect to be working with the voice behind the death metal classic Lost Paradise, or the genre defining Gothic, and yet here we are decades later fulfilling another death metal dream. With his sinister and ominous vocal delivery, it's an absolute pleasure to make Old Nick the bell-ringer in Bloodbath's Grand Morbid Funeral!"
Jonas Renkse (bass) commented, "Ever since I got into Lost Paradise back in '90, Nick Holmes has been one of my favorite growling vocalists out there. He was always audible and articulate but still deep and definitely morbid. It is a great pleasure to work with him some 25 years later after I was introduced to his thunderous roar!"
"Grand Morbid Funeral" was recorded at Ghost Ward Studios and the City of Glass Studios in Stockholm, and mixed by David Castillo. More...
