Pit Stories: The Unwanted Flautist

Joining the band on stage is a dream for many metal lovers, but sometimes that doesn't always go down the way you might of hoped.

For this week's Pit Story, Martin Drozd from beer-guzzling folk metal outfit Protokult shares a story of inviting a young fan to play on stage without first checking with the rest of the group:

So there we were, doing what we do best and indulging during our pre-show ritual. This venue/backstage was conveniently located right next to a parking lot which was nice and easy access for us to get obliterated before our set.

The sun went down and the Kult was in town and all of a sudden a group of random teenage school kids approached us in the parking lot. They looked a little under age, plus I don't like sharing with strangers so we didn't offer them any swigs but I noticed one nerdy looking kid was carrying some sort of small instrument case. "Hey man, what instrument you got there?" I asked. "I'm a flautist," he chirped back; "just finished a busking gig." I thought to myself, "interesting." Turns out he had the same name as our guitarist (Jeremy) and I decided to test his musical abilities. "If you claim to have studied music all these years, fuck it, join us on stage for a few numbers," I suggested. I am easy going like that and figured it would be worth a laugh; hell, maybe the kid would be amazing!

The young Jeremy was delighted at the thought and I quickly mentioned a few chord progressions for him to keep in mind and practice to. Fast-forward inside the venue. As we're setting up, the nerdy, homeless looking minstrel wanders up on stage and starts blowing his heart out on the flute. Coincidentally, this was the same weekend as the Toronto Jazz festival so I decided to troll the audience a bit. "Good evening folks, this is Jeremy on the flute and welcome to the Toronto Jazz fest." Confusion and apprehension lingered amok but the joke seemed well-received by a majority of the audience. As Jeremy kept fluting relentlessly for what seemed a lifetime, we launched into our first song.

Ekaterina climbed up on stage and gave this kid a swift kick off-stage and in less than a heartbeat, he was gone! He tried weaseling his way back on for a few numbers but she wasn't having it. Being very drunk and focused on my own performance, I took no notice to the occasional plea for mercy and desperate cries of "Please give me a chance, I'm a human being!" Moral of the story? Make sure the full band is aware of any guest appearances prior to performance.

Protokult's new album "No Beer In Heaven" just came out last month and can be heard in full via the Bandcamp player provided below. More...

Puig Destroyer Streaming New Track

American baseball-inspired grindcore band Puig Destroyer has finally said what everyone is already thinking… "No One Cares About Your Fantasy Team!"

The band is currently training for a post-season, self-titled record release on September 30th and has debuted a new song today. Check out the track below, courtesy of DeadSpin.com. The album is currently available for pre-order via No Sleep Records at this location.

of anything I want to hear about less than someone else's fantasy team. Maybe the dream you had last night, or what you had for breakfast. Literally no one but you cares. This song is a reminder to shut the hell up about it."

A band literally put together because of a love for hardcore and baseball, Puig Destroyer’s unrelenting passion for the game is overwhelmingly obvious on the band’s new self-titled record. From the new track “No One Cares About Your Fantasy Team” to the recently released song “Mike Trout,” the album pays homage to America’s favorite pastime with 20 tunes that clock in at just under a blistering 25 minutes. Seizures Re-Issuing "The Sanity Universal"

Los Angeles label Melotov Records announces October 7th as the release of Seizures' "The Sanity Universal" – now fully remixed, remastered, and available on vinyl for the first time as a double LP.

Listen to "Product of a Time Loss Scenario," off the newly remixed and remastered album in the SoundCloud player below. Melotov Records also comments:

"From the beach town of Dana Point, California, south of LA, Seizures own their own brand of next-generation mathcore – dark, complex, adventurous. Born in the shadow of the elder Orange County scene (Adamantium, Throwdown, Eighteen Visions, that whole circle), Seizures are closer in spirit to bands like Rorschach and Coalesce – bands that pushed hardcore into other dimensions, that embraced complexity not as an exercise but as an exorcism. Standing on the shoulders of those giants, Seizures catapult the genre into outerspace, displaying an absolute freedom of musical ideas. Double album The Sanity Universal is a massive sonic experience, as vast as the starscape on its cover.

"As American Aftermath's perfect 10/10 review described The Sanity Universal upon its original 2013 release, the sound encompasses 'the grimy dissonance of Gaza, the frenetic riffing of Botch, and the uncontrollable structures of The Dillinger Escape Plan.'

"The Sanity Universal was engineered and mixed by Rollie Ulug (Graf Orlock, Dangers) at Bright Lights Studios in Santa Ana, California. Originally released in 2013 as a limited CD on the band's own Sun Terrace Records, the album has been since remixed by Ulug and remastered by mastering ace Chris Common (The Mars Volta, Chelsea Wolfe). The new master sounds absolutely massive and crystalline. It attacks, it shines, it haunts." More...

Guitarist Ryan Jardine comments on the album: "Previously our lyrics had been firmly based on reality but now, with our new vocalist [Dan Lofthouse], we have taken inspiration from works of fiction and combined this with real life experiences.

"Musically, we really wanted to expand on everything we've done before, to push ourselves further and add more technicality, yet making sure we didn't lose the all-important groove people know us for. Everyone in the band has been fully involved with the new material. We all have a vast range of influences and it's just been about bringing this all together."

Amaranthe Releases Song From New Album

Amaranthe has debuted the song "Drop Dead Cynical" online from new album "Massive Addictive," due out October 21st on Spinefarm Records. The track premiered online via Loudwire today (also available below).

Commented guitarist Olof Mörck, "The first piece of music to be released from Massive Addictive is a very representative track. 'Drop Dead Cynical' is as massive as it is addictive. This ultra groovy song is a markedly different first single compared to classical Amaranthe single choices, and it takes our trademark sound in fresh and exciting new directions! Top that off with an anthemic chorus, and the result is what I consider one of the absolutely strongest Amaranthe songs ever!" More...

Exodus Streaming New Track Featuring Kirk Hammett

The wait is over! Today, the Bay Area thrash metal pioneers in Exodus unleash their blistering new track "Salt The Wound," which features an intense guitar solo from none other than original Exodus/Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett.

Check out the track below, thanks to Rollingstone.com. "Salt The Wound" is cut from the new Exodus album "Blood In, Blood Out," hitting stores on October 14th, 2014 in North America via Nuclear Blast.

Guitarist Gary Holt explains that Hammett was more than ready to play on the album: “Having Kirk play on the new Exodus record kind of came about after I played so many shows with Metallica while touring with Slayer over the past four year. It started the same way most of these things do, as a lot of chatter while having a good time, but Kirk was more stoked to play on the new record than anyone.

"He never got to play on anything with Exodus since the first demo despite being a founding member, so I think it really meant a lot to him. Coming full circle so to speak. So I chose the song 'Salt the Wound' since I thought the rhythm section for the first lead was right in his wheelhouse, and he killed it! He came in and busted out several takes and his solo compliments mine perfectly. Then we drank beer and ate barbecue! Epic time!” More...
