Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 29

Break out your tissue box and keep those cyanide tablets handy (just in case): you’re in for a bummed-out train wreck of an episode this week on the MetalUnderground.com Official Podcast. Stay tuned to the end, however, to see if your opinions match up with those of your silver-tongued co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure).

Before we begin, yet another reminder of our upcoming ticket giveaways at Revolution Live in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. First comes The Black Dahlia Murder (supported by Suicide Silence) on Monday, October 13th, followed by Attila (supported by Crown The Empire and Like Moths To Flames) on Friday, November 14th.

If interested, please fire an email to podcast@metalunderground.com with one (or both) of the headlining bands in the subject heading and your full name (matching your ID) in the message body.

Additionally, if you’re an unsigned metal band with a kickass song you’d like to hear featured as our weekly intro music, we’d like to hear it! Please contact us via the email address above.

Now, time to get depressed. Mike bids solemn farewell to an underrated talent in the global metal underground: Tobias Graf, founding drummer of German melodic/symphonic death metal group Deadlock, who this week passed away for undisclosed reasons at the young age of 35. Graf left the band in April of this year, but played on all releases since the band’s 1997 formation.

Next… here come the Thought Police! We wish it were a joke, but a Kentucky youth has indeed been arrested and charged with domestic terrorism threats… for posting Exodus lyrics on Facebook. The Bay Area thrashers’ 2010 album “Exhibit B: The Human Condition” featured a song titled “Class Dismissed: A Hate Primer,” which told of the 2007 Virginia Tech shooting spree through the eyes of the deranged killer. The absurdity of this incident speaks for itself, but that doesn't stop us from commenting on it.

We all saw this coming over the course of the week, but still, it seemed to happen so damn fast. In the ultimate case of déjà vu, frontman Mark Hunter of Chimaira has been completely deserted by his bandmates en masse for the second time in three years. This time, he’s decided to throw in the towel, effectively putting an end to fifteen years and seven albums of cutting-edge American metal. Stay tuned for our thoughts on the matter.

Finally, we react to Swedish metal veterans In Flames’ new studio album “Siren Charms,” due for a September 9th release and currently streaming. Considering our devotion to this band through thick and thin over the years, our frustration in discussing this lackluster and disappointing new release is palpable, and it ain’t pretty.

If you make it through this episode without losing the will to live, then by all means, subscribe via iTunes and RSS feed. We hope to bring you some happier thoughts soon!

Mastodon Releasing "Black Blood" Coffee

In honor of new album "Once More 'Round The Sun," Mastodon will be releasing "Black Blood" coffee. The following press release was also issued:

"The year is 2420, techno-organic life forms rule the earth, the cyborg Mastodon seeks vengeance against the Clovis people for the genocide of his kind. The terrestrial leviathan fuels himself with Black Blood, as he prepares to enter the time portal known as the Dark Matter Machine.

"Through the power vested in Black Blood, the Mastodon shall reclaim its throne of world domination. Dark Matter Coffee and Mastodon are ecstatic to present this colossal coffee, Black Blood. It is composed of our infamous Unicorn Blood aged in Basil Hayden's Bourbon Whiskey barrels and is limited to 2000 world wide.

"Clovis Blood is the product of revenge. After traveling back in time to the age of the Clovis people, the cyborg-mastodons would bottle their vengeance with the very same tusks their ancestors were annihilated for. These bottles, until now, were exclusively used to re-fuel their hatred for the Clovis people. The Blood of Clovis will be available in hand-made, wax dipped iced coffee bomber, limited to 500 bottles.

"Both will be unleashed September 8th, via Dark Matter Coffee's website and retail locations." More...

XDB Changes Name

Guitar virtuoso Xander Demos (Sabbath Judas Sabbath, James Rivera, Solo) and his band XDB have announced a new band name, Raxus Prime.

The new name comes from a heavily metal-covered planet in the "Star Wars" expanded universe. This name change comes on the heels of Xander's announcement of two new album projects due later this year: one album featuring members of Xander's solo band and guest musicians; and one album by the newly monikered, Raxus Prime.

"For some time, there have been some misconceptions about the name, XDB," said Xander Demos. "While it started out as my band, it was clear that the members were more than just members of the 'Xander Demos Band.' So, we changed to XDB, but everyone still assumed it was Xander Demos' Band, no matter how we tried to say it didn't stand for that. So, we wanted a new name, that would convey that this is, in fact, a band situation, with all equal parts, equal members. We're all a bunch of 'Star Wars' geeks, so being that Raxus Prime is a metal-covered planet, it seemed the perfect name to go with."

Raxus Prime is: Xander Demos (guitars, vocals), Mario Brescia (lead vocals), Jeff Morris (keys, vocals), Jeff Anzelone (drums), and Dan Bozym (bass).

The band has performed (as XDB) at festival events Skull Fest, Rock Harvest II, Wolf Fest and have opened for Stryper, Metal Church, Adrenaline Mob, Symphony X, Dio Disciples, and many others.

Raxus Prime can be heard on the latest single release, "Dancing Through Daggers," (Shark Nest/MTS) which will appear on volume 2 of Versailles Records' Guitar Wizards compilation, due out next month, and on the raw preview of new track, "The Phoenix." More...

Lo-Pan Streaming "Vox"

While Lo-Pan traverses the U.S. alongside amplification duo Black Cobra, today The Obelisk hosts a stream of "Vox" from the forthcoming "Colossus" full-length. Check it out below. The following press release was also issued about the album:

"Named for the Colossus of Rhodes - a ninety-six-foot statue of the Greek titan-god of the sun, Helios, constructed in 280 BC to mark a failed siege and the indomitable nature of the Greek city of Rhodes itself - Lo-Pan's fourth full-length was produced and engineered by Andrew Schneider (Unsane, Rosetta, East Of The Wall et al) at his own Translator Audio Studio in Brooklyn and boasts ten crushingly soulful psalms that reveal just how much they've moved beyond their influences to arrive at their own sound - a style built on aggression without caricature, fuzz without cliché, melody without redundancy and their meanest groove to date."

"Colossus" will see official release via Small Stone on October 7th, 2014. The previously posted song "Regulus" can also be heard at this location. More...

Century Media Gives Blake Judd The Boot

The recurring issue of fans not receiving albums or merchandise ordered directly through Nachtmystium's Blake Judd apparently continues on with "The World We Left Behind" - which was to be the band's "final" album before a no-duh reversal occurred just before the album's release.

However, it appears Century Media has tired of the antics, and is stepping in to resolve the issue for fans who have been bilked out of their money. The label apparently will also no longer be working with Nachtmystium, commenting:

"Century Media Records understands that many people have not received their copies of 'The World We Left Behind' even though they pre-ordered the album directly from front-man, Blake Judd. We know that this is not only frustrating but also a let down to the fans of the band. So, we'd like to help out in this situation and deliver the fans their pre-ordered copies on the format that they ordered.

"Please e-mail us at: nachtmystiumorders@centurymedia.com with proof of your order and we will get you your copy of the album on the format(s) that you ordered them on. We just ask that this e-mail address be used for issues with 'The World We Left Behind' band direct pre-order issues only. Blake will not be reading any of the e-mails and we will not be forwarding any e-mails about other items that Blake sold through his personal pages or the Nachtmystium Facebook page.

"'The World We Left Behind' also marks the last album Nachtmystium has with Century Media Records. We wish Blake Judd the best of luck with all future endeavors, both musically and personally."

And for those who don't care about the drama and just want the music, check out our review of "The World We Left Behind" here and stream a track off the album below. More...

Rise Of The Northstar Signs With Nuclear Blast

The Manga metal mosh monsters Rise Of The Northstar have signed a worldwide licence deal with Nuclear Blast Records after owner/CEO, Markus Staiger, had watched and met the band at this year's Summer Breeze Open Air.

Commented Markus Staiger: "I was instantly blown away by the sheer power of their live performance! This is the brutality I was looking for! I immediately knew we had to have ROTNS on our roster! It is nothing but impressive what they have achieved in so little time – all on their own. Also this is another proof for the diversity of metal, the scene and our label! Samurai Spirit!"

Commented the band: "We are proud of this new venture between our label Repression Records and the biggest independent metal record company Nuclear Blast.

"ROTNS has spent years fighting like hell in the underground, and the opportunity of partnering with people who understand our artistic vision, respect our indépendant culture, not to mention defend the interests of acts that have influenced our sound, is the right move to take our band to the next level.

"We are proud of our debut record, and Nuclear Blast's firepower will give this album the global reach that we always aimed for."

ROTNS has finished work on the debut album, "Welcame," which was mixed and mastered by renowned producer Zeuss and is set to be released November 21st, 2014 via Nuclear Blast.

Latitude Egress Announces "To Take Up The Cross"

Art of Propaganda is proud to present the debut album of Latitude Egress, "To Take Up the Cross," set for international release on October 27th. The label had this to say:

"A towering work of staggering magnitude, Latitude Egress' To Take Up the Cross breathes new life into the often-stagnant body of doom metal. Clean-vocalled doom commingles with funeral doom, shape-shifting along the way while never settling too safely within one or the other, and wholly avoiding any retrograde stoner/sludge elements.

"Befitting of its title, To Take Up the Cross is imbued with massive amounts of melody, but a rainy 'n' grainy sort that suitably lends a sinister air to proceedings; its march is almost monastic, solemn and sworn to solitude. Although the band's debut, Latitude Egress is no newcomer. The album was originally meant to be released by Licht Erlischt, the band of mainman Niklas (AKA Nerrath) who released two albums under that banner before changing monikers to Latitude Egress; the project, however, had been renamed, partially in order to dissociate itself from contemporary DSBM trends.

"What results is a full-length sensory experience that illuminates the darkest corners of the mind and flushes out the rare and radiant spirit of mental unsteadiness being rooted in loss, love, longing, and fear, yet is NOT suited for those looking for self-pitying musicianship or suicide as a romantic concept. Finished off by front-cover artwork bespeaking its contained themes, To Take Up the Cross will soon be spoken of as a Year Zero event in doom, and a total paradigm-shifter." More...

The House Of Capricorn Releasing New Album

Svart Records has set November 9th as the international release date for The House of Capricorn's "Morning Star Rise."

Set to be release on CD, LP, and digital formats, "Morning Star Rise" is the third full-length from The House of Capricorn, an apocalyptic devil rock troupe from New Zealand, and it follows previous release "In The Devil's Days" (reviewed here). Svart also comments:

"Within its nine tracks of doomed rock 'n' roll, the album encapsulates the last three years of The House of Capricorn’s infernal service. Manifested at the bottom of the world, Morning Star Rise is an unholy, antipodean hymn to a looming end, all in the blinding light of the Devil. Drawing from the rowdy darkness of Babylon Whores, the gloom of Type O Negative, and all kinds of scathing black metal, the record is a culmination of rich influences and pitch-black aesthetics, all presented in lurching rock 'n' roll form with honest, Hellish intent."

The album's track listing is a sofllows:

Rebellious Spirit Releases "Lost" Music Video

German hard rock act Rebellious Spirit issued a new music video for the track "Lost." The song appears on the upcoming sophomore release "Obsession," which drops on September 19th (Germany), September 22nd (EU) and October 14th (USA) via SPV/Steamhammer Records.

Bass player Jens Fischer commented: "The video's and the song's message: Every low-pressure zone is soon followed by a high-pressure zone. Every new day may change your life positively!"

"The events of recent years, the production of our debut album Gamble Shot, the shows, the first tour with Axel Rudi Pell, all those things have helped us a great deal," explains vocalist Jannik Fischer.

"You've got to bear in mind that Jannik was just 15 and I was 18 when we recorded the first demos for Gamble Shot," Jens Fischer recalls. "Now, three years later, we're all even better and more accomplished on our instruments, and Jannik's voice in particular has audibly matured, which of course benefits the new material enormously."
