Pit Stories: A Show To Remember In Ontario
Time for the next in our ongoing series of heavy metal Pit Stories! This week Canadian black metal group Vow Of Thorns shares a tale of an infamous night with a very drunk crowd where nothing went quite as planned. Vow Of Thorns tells the story like this:
Last June we were playing a show in Sarnia, Ontario, with Wounds and Panzerfaust, and the whole night was just ridiculous. It was a big party in town that weekend and we had one drunk and drug fueled crowd.
During our set some coked out old guy gets going wild at the front of the stage. At one point I look at him and he’s got his hands on his belt undoing his pants. I’m thinking this guy is about to whip his dick out at us, so I turn my back to the crowd and jab our bassist with my guitar to get his attention. He looks up just in time to see this agile old fella with his pants around his ankles bent over damn near touching his toes. Now he’s disgusted and I’m laughing my ass off.
After he got his pants back he decides he’d like to join us on stage. There was no way I was about to let this guy on the stage. He’s right in front of me trying to climb up. He would’ve ended up right on my pedal-board and fucked something up. So I thought, do I kick him in the head? Or do I kick him in the chest? I figured a boot to the face might be a bit much, so I gently nudged him off the stage… well I don’t think I kicked him that hard, but he took quite a tumble.
We had overheard that guy bragging about being a KKK member and spouting some white power bullshit, so I didn’t feel too bad about it. The night just got worse from there. Mainly just a few idiots causing problems. One fight that started inside and ended in a street fight. I only caught part of that. But the night was capped off with one strange little sadist offering himself to Panzerfaust. That part of the story, however, is probably better told by Panzerfaust's vocalist...
The Ontario-dwelling black metal doom fusionists making up Vow Of Thorns will release "Farewell To The Sun" on July 15th, which will be preceded by Canadian tour dates. Check out a track off the album below. More...

Eerie Announces Self-Titled Album
Bi-coastal black metal / hard rock band Eerie will release a self-titled debut album on July 29th via Tee Pee Records. Featuring a monster mash of musicians including guitarist Tim Lehi (Draugar, Twilight), bassist Dave Sweetapple (Witch), drummer Moses Saarni (Futur Skullz) and vocalist Shane Baker (Pins of Light, Alaric), Eerie plays haunting, biting metal.
Recorded in Oakland, California's Earhammer Audio by producer Greg Wilkinson (Graves at Sea, Vastum), the record delivers a lycanthropic lashing.
"I've known Tim for a long time through the art / tattoo world and he's done graphics for Witch," comments Sweetapple. "Then a few years ago we worked together on a music project called Vardlokk, along with Grutle from Enslaved. Ever since that happened we had been talking about doing another band without knowing a specific direction to go. One day he sent me a bunch of phone recorded demo ideas that he and Moe (drummer) were playing around with. The structure was fairly black metal in parts, as well as the style of the guitar and drums. While being a fan of much early black metal, that style is not something that comes naturally to me when playing. Similar to the Witch songs, I figured out a bunch of 'Scooby Doo-style' bass lines and flew to Oakland to start recording the full length with Greg Wilkinson. The basics were recorded for almost a year before Shane came along and added the vocals. Once that happened it moved well away from the black metal realm with vocals that were quite clear and in my opinion, some sort of channeling of early Killing Joke style mixed with his other band Pins of Light. We are all pretty pleased with how it turned out."
The "Eerie" album features inhuman album art by tattoo artist (and guitarist) Tim Lehi, who has previously commissioned works for High On Fire, Leviathan, Saviours, and more. The track listing is as follows:
1.) Hideous Serpent
2.) Yeti
3.) Master of Creation
4.) Immortal Rot
5.) Blood Drinkers More...
Useless Streaming "Anaesthesia Dolorosa"
Today a new track comes online from the unholy black metal trinity known as Useless. "Anaesthesia Dolorosa" is taken from forthcoming debut album "Absence of Grace," due to be released on September 2nd, 2016.
"Absence of Grace" consists of five tracks of absolute black metal madness with only one message: You are of no meaning. You are useless. All you can do is tighten the noose.
Useless bridges the gap between Norwegian black metal and the U.S. black metal scene. It is slow and hypnotic, yet cold and depressive at the same time. The sound is best described as old Burzum meets Xasthur and "Demise" era Nachtmystium. Towards the gallows, into the ultimate nightmare. More...

Necroptic Engorgement Releasing New Album
Necroptic Engorgement's "Realms of Incessant Bloodshed" is coming via Manifest Records on June 24th, 2016.
Hailing from New York’s Hudson Valley, Necroptic Engorgement is a three piece brutal death metal outfit, drawing influence from various acts including Dying Fetus, Suffocation and a band favorite, Cannibal Corpse.
Originally started as a studio project in 2010, Necroptic Engorgement quickly recruited a full lineup, including Will Escolano, Reggie Torres, David Gapay and Shane Lake. Due to personal issues, Shane departed from the band after a 1st live performance, followed by Reggie’s resignation shortly after the release of the band’s debut EP “Transmogrified.”
Since 2012 Necroptic Engorgement has remained a 3 piece act. In 2013, the band parted ways with riginal drummer, David Gapay. Shortly thereafter, Ryan Hilerio was recruited to fill the position behind the kit. With this new and redefined lineup, the rest simply fell into place. More...
Adrian Erlandsson Parts With Paradise Lost
Last year it was announced that Adrian Erlandsson would be missing upcoming tour dates with Paradise Lost, and now that temporary situation has become a permanent split. Adrian comments:
"For the ones that don't already know, I am no longer playing with Paradise Lost. When 'The Plague Within' was released last year I was in the middle of gigs with At The Gates and The Haunted.
"Since I couldn't make all the gigs for the new album, it made sense for PL to have someone that can be there the whole time, which I couldn't. I want to thank everyone in the band and management.
"It has been an amazing ride playing with one of my favourite bands and I feel very proud of the work we did together. This is the last video I did with the band." More...

Black Crown Initiate Reveals Full Album Details
The inescapable knowledge of inevitable impending physical death is but one burden of human consciousness. Consider the notion that awareness itself is a curse, a tool for knowing that nothing is truly knowable? What if the awareness of existence leads to the discovery that there is no existence, or if there is, it is impossible to ever describe?
A contemplative study of the mind, the spirit, and the nature of reality itself may seem incongruent with the trappings of heavy metal to the uninitiated casual observer. But those who descend into the darkest subterranean abyss of the art form’s most aggressive nihilism, only to soar under protection of a meditative cloak of aural pleasure, are those who may share in the progressive death metal of Black Crown initaite.
"Selves We Can Not Forgive," the band’s sophomore album, is coming July 22nd, 2016 via eOne Music. More...
Der Rote Milan Releasing "Aus Der Asche"
German black metal has a history of being vicious, and Der Rote Milan is no exception. Dense, punishing and packed with vitriol, the band is charging out the gate with first album "Aus Der Asche."
After a hypnotic intro, the true nature of Aus Der Asche is revealed through “Nebel und Regen,” where dense melodies balance atop a grooving rhythm which can shift into blast beats at the drop of a hat, while extreme vocals of all timbres guide the listener. It’s intense, and to quote the band, showcases an "ability to uncompromisingly unite hatred and beauty."
"Aus Der Asche" ("Out Of The Ashes") will be self-released on July 1st, both digitally and with a limited CD run of 200.

2. Nebel Und Regen (Fog and Rain)

Komatsu Signs Record Deal
Argonauta Records just issued this announcement about inking a record deal with Dutch outfit Komatsu:
"Beyond excited to welcome a new great band in the Argonauta Records family: the super massive rock band from Eindhoven (NL), Komatsu, with a stunning mix of sludge, stoner rock and metal!
"Formed in early 2010, the band released a self-titled EP in 2011. After that, they focused on live shows and writing material for their first full length album. 'Manu Armata' saw the daylights in February of 2013 and was instantly well received by the international press. It got raving reviews and Komatsu’s music style was compared to bands like Queens of the Stone Age, Torche, Mastodon, Monster Magnet and Karma to Burn.
"Over the past five years they have steadily grown and were asked to be the support act for internationally well-known bands like Truckfighters (SWE), Lonely Kamel (NO) and a range of bands from the USA such as Monster Magnet, Karma to Burn, The Sword, Red Fang, Clutch, Nashville Pussy, High on Fire, Corrosion of Conformity and Baroness. They also performed at the official Queens of the Stone Age after party in the Effenaar in Eindhoven. In 2014 they went on European tour with none other than John Garcia (Vista Chino, ex-Kyuss, Hermano, Unida and Slo Burn) and played 32 shows in 13 countries.
"In November 2015 Komatsu was on the verge of crossing and conquering Europe again with another Palm Desert Scene stoner hero: a tour with Nick Oliveri’s Mondo Generator!
"The new album 'Recipe Fot Murder One' will be released September 23rd 2016 in CD/DD formats. And the vinyl edition via Lighttown Fidelity. The first single and official video clip is available below." More...

Soilwork Unveils "Death Resonance" Details
Soilwork has a special collection of rarities by the name "Death Resonance" coming out on August 19th, 2016 via Nuclear Blast.
Today the band reveals the cover art, created by Mnemic guitarist Mircea Gabriel Eftemie (Volbeat, Carcass, Scar Symmetry, Strapping Young Lad), as well as the track listing for "Death Resonance."
Commented singer Björn 'Speed' Strid: "The cover for 'Death Resonance' is made by Mircea Eftemie and in many ways he has managed to capture what we went through while recording 'The Ride Majestic:' the sorrow, the close encounter with death, the aftermath and also the existential cogitation that came with it.
"It links those albums together, even though 'Death Resonance' contains unreleased material from 2005 onwards. The cover almost seems like a link between life and death and not only captures where the band is right now, but also where we've been and what lies ahead."

The Apocalypse Blues Revue Announces Debut Album
The Apocalypse Blues Review - a new band from Godsmack’s Shannon Larkin and Tony Rombola - will drop a self-titled album on August 26th, 2016 via Provogue / Mascot Label Group.
As the legend goes, Robert Johnson infamously started his career by meeting the Devil at the crossroads. By the same token, you could say The Apocalypse Blues Revue began playing at the end of the world. Co-founded by Godsmack drummer Shannon Larkin and guitarist Tony Rombola and featuring vocalist Ray “Rafer John” Cerbone and bassist Brian Carpenter, the quartet honors blues traditions, while etching their stamp on the genre in blood.
“As far as blues goes, The Apocalypse Blues Revue is a little heavier, a little darker, and has some punk rock attitude in the lyrics,” affirms Shannon. “We wanted to make something deep that will provoke thought. It had to be evil though. We’re not trying to make it happy. It’s called blues for a reason!”
“There’s always been some blues in my playing,” adds Tony. “It came from classic rock like Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, and AC/DC. Then, I got into guys like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Eric Gales. We decided to mix it up, merging traditional blues and heavier elements.” More...
"Realm Of The Damned" Coming To North America
Maniacal Publishing today proudly announces its first official release: after months of teasing, the "Realm Of The Damned" graphic novel is coming to North America on October 19th.
"Realm Of The Damned" is a unique graphic novel from the creative team of writer Alec Worley and illustrator Simon "Pye" Parr (2000 AD). The 144-page saga was created by Steve Beatty of England's Werewolf Publishing.
"Tenebris Deos" is the first of four planned installments of the exciting horror tale. Raw, fast-paced, and bristling with atmosphere, classic gothic monsters are unleashed for a modern rampage of redemption and damnation. It is a bloody and blasphemous epic that features appearances from heavy metal titans Behemoth, Emperor, and Mayhem.
Maniacal Publishing founder Greg Ross comments: "When my friend Steve (Beatty) told me about 'Realm of The Damned,' I literally begged him to let me release it in North America. It's one of the most exciting projects I have ever been involved with and I can't wait for people to see it."
"I'm super excited to see 'Realm Of the Damned' released in the US via Maniacal Publishing and to be working with Greg again," adds Beatty, owner of Werewolf Publishing and former co-owner of Candlelight Records. "'Realm Of The Damned' has been a huge success in Europe so far with our first pressing selling out. It's fantastic to see it coming stateside for the growing legion of undead fans. Enjoy the darkness America." More...

Paradise Lost Signs With Nuclear Blast Records
Iconic UK metal act Paradise Lost has signed a worldwide deal with German-based metal powerhouse Nuclear Blast Records.
Formed in Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1988 and still boasting 4 of its 5 original members, the band are widely-credited with co-founding the gothic metal genre with the sophomore album, 'Gothic' (1991). Through the years, Paradise Lost changed styles effectively and reinvented the the sound again and again. The band elbowed its way from the original melodic death metal sound on 'Lost Paradise' (1990) to the classic 'Icon' (1993) and even more on the experimental 'One Second' (1997). Finally, the band went back to the roots with the current release, 'The Plague Within' (2015) achieving some of the best album reviews of its career.
Vocalist Nick Holmes commented: "Paradise Lost's career has run alongside Nuclear Blast Records since the label began in the late 80's. And as huge fans of original death metal, we still have the majority of the label's first releases from those very early days. It's pretty incredible to see how the label has become a real force in metal music over the years, both in Europe and America and now, nearly 30 years later, in a new chapter for the band, it's exciting for Paradise Lost to be a part of Nuclear Blast!"
Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger added: "As a fan from day one I've been following Paradise Lost ever since their death metal era, but have also enjoyed watching them grow into something even bigger and so unique. They defined and later on re-defined the gothic genre and always delivered the most dark and memorable songs. It's a great pleasure to finally welcome the band to the ever-growing Nuclear Blast family! Needless to say that we're very much looking forward to this partnership!"

Gears Premieres "End This" Video
Today we've got a hard rocking new video premiere we're stoked to release to the masses, taken off the latest Gears EP "Pride Comes Before The Fall."
Check out the topical and very timely "End This" lyric / music video below. If you like what you hear, the EP is available via iTunes here.
Jimmy Wooten of Gears also had this to say about the tune:
"People have strong opinions and beliefs regarding violence in our streets, more specifically concentrated around police brutality. 'End This' lyrically, is a look into both sides of it, the police that we put our trust in to make difficult decisions in a split second and the victims of the brutality, who could be on either side. In the middle, we have the media. Depending on which media source you're getting your news from, will decide which political agenda you're being fed. We need to stop letting the media influence us to perpetuate the war of any racial or political agenda. Simply put, we need to END THIS."
The Miami heavy outfit was founded in early 2014 and following the release of "Set in Motion," Gears immediately launched into a first headline run with support from I-Exist. Just three days into the tour, the band's equipment trailer disconnected, resulting in a massive, horrific accident. In spite of this tremendous blow, the group endured and continued the tour without missing a beat.
In June 2015, Gears began work on new EP "Pride Comes Before the Fall" and hit the road for the Riser Tour, once again with I-Exist. You can follow the latest Gears news and live show info at Facebook here. More...
